Intruders on the home planet

The crew of the Sirocco has made it back to Concordia—only to find the Scythians got there before them.

Their planet has been invaded, the human population has been enslaved, and the fight for freedom seems hopeless.

But that doesn’t stop the Concordians from trying.

They must engineer an uprising, a rebellion so vicious it forces the aliens to reconsider their plans. Yet even if the rebels succeed, both sides may be condemned to an endless cycle of reprisals.

Reprisal is the ninth and final book in the epic space colonization adventure, Space Colony One. Complete series.

J.J. Green is a British-Australian science fiction author with a lifelong love of distant landscapes, intriguing cultures and fascinating places. She was born within the sound of the bells of Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside, London, making her a bona fide Cockney, and she lived in Australia, Laos and Taiwan before returning to the UK to settle down in Cambridge.

Green’s novels weave science-based speculation with richly personal stories. Her works explore themes of environmental degradation, political conflict, mythical resonance, human resilience, and the ethics of technology and expansion. Her characters—often strong women—navigate future worlds grounded in both scientific plausibility and mythic imagination.

Colonists return to planet to try to keep aliens from eradicating humans - 4.5 stars

Colonizing a newly discovered planet is hard. It is worse when aliens return claiming it was their planet all along and then enslave the humans. Travels through space have their own tribulations which become species-threatening when the aliens (Scythians in this case) bring their desire to conquer everything start to play out.

We are presented with FTL (faster than light) travel, trips between Earth and Concordia, power struggles, and ego clashes. This time a teenaged girl (Miki) makes a difference while a struggle just to stay alive makes the story shine.

Negotiation skills, while not initially successful, help to focus humanity's considerations. Given the differences in physical size, locomotion (flying v walking), and atmosphere necessary for life (CO2 v O2), it is unlikely that the primary parties would ever meet face to face.

Trekking across unforgiving landscape combined with bickering by the small group of humans gives a glimpse of what humans after crash landing on the planet surface can endure. Considerations for landing in a desolate area, warfare and living together in trying circumstances is what makes this story exciting and worthwhile.

It is perhaps not all that strange to regard Concordia as your home planet having been bred and born there. Earth might be beautiful, but even there the Scythians had invaded.
For Wilder but one place is home. And arriving there with the Sirocco after Sixty plus odd years later to find the Scythians in control and the remaining humans enslaved, was a huge disappointment.
But Wilder also is a genius in her own right. Joining the rebellion should be where she can assist the humans to drive the Scythians off.
That is...if there is an underground resistance.
This last book in the Space Colony One series, is filled with drama, disappointments, hope and all kinds of setbacks. And for the reader a heck of a lot of anxiety. I am so glad I do not have a habit of chewing my nails...especially whilst reading Reprisal.

I received a copy of this book from the author.

I have loved this series of books right from the start. It has just got better and better as it went along.

The Sirocco has almost arrived back at Concordia when it runs into Scythian ships that fire on it. Sirocco beats a hasty retreat to consider their options. Going back to Earth is not an option as they’d used up most of their power and resources getting to Concordia.

Vessey and her team have a lot of thinking and planning to do if they are to survive.

This is an exciting, fast paced story that you will have to make time for as it is difficult to put down.

I’m sad to say that this is the last book in the series but that’s always the way with truly good stories.

Oh my! This last book of the long and fascinating series starts with a bang and the suspense almost doesn't let up. A great finale, with all our wonderful friends - Wilder above all - and some recap to previous books. My goodness, what a journey - from settling the planet Concordia, to disagreements, to finding new life forms, then the Scythians - this series is just amazing. The ship Sirocco, returning with a big load of biological forms from Earth, must fight off the Scythians, who have massively colonized Concordia in their absence. How will they do this, and what will be the repercussions? - I received a review copy and freely leave this honest review.

What a truly glorious, beautiful ending to the most amazing story Reprisal is! I’m in awe of the author’s ability to storytell. There is such beauty, cruelty, and love of so many kinds. The battle for Concordia is hard fought and the ending is even more perfection. Perhaps it’s time to go back to the start.

They aren't a lot of authors I follow religiously but JJ is one. The final take hold many surprises with the conflict. Sometimes you have to know your enemy in order to understand.
The ending was totally unexpected for me but it is perfect for the series. Many of the characters are so 'real', you feel like you know them.

It's the last book in the series and so you hope that everything will be resolved. The Scythians are back on Concordia and the humans are being treated as slaves, as they were on Earth.

Wilder and the crew are fighting for humanity with the help of the Resistance.

Exciting parts, interesting characters and development, but best for me was learning more about the “aliens” and their priorities. Twists and turns in the story with a good ending and great writing.

After a journey to earth, Wilder makes it back to Concordia. With the time fold of FTL travel, once again everyone she knows has died. The descendants don’t believe her team are who they say they are.
Amazingly it all works out in the end, but with a big hole of how the Scythan’s will survive.
