August, 1941 America remains neutral in the war in Europe, but signs of the Axis army’s expanding power grab have many in America believing their involvement in the war is only a matter of time. In preparation for that event, they begin gathering information from all areas of conflict.
A Moroccan Mission A descendant of the Pirate Blackbeard, Warren Smith, aka Chief, has spent his life on the sea, and now he pilots the Folly for the undercover Neptune Five team. As war rages in Europe, danger lurks everywhere, even in remote parts of the world. The Neptune Five embark on a perilous mission to map safe passage up the Sebou river in Morocco to a crucial airstrip, without drawing the attention of the Vichy French navy or the Nazis soldiers stationed there.
Enter Elizabeth "Betty" Devereaux, a missionary nurse with a secret. She knows the Sebou river and needs to deliver life-saving medical supplies to the Bedouins living along the shores. She agrees to guide the Folly's crew up the river. As Betty and Chief navigate the treacherous waters of Morocco, they find themselves drawn to each other despite the dangers threatening to tear them apart.
November 1942 America has entered the war. On the eve of Operation Torch, the invasion of Morocco, Chief and the Neptune Five team has another mission—to find Betty who has gone missing. They fear she’s landed in the hands of the Nazi SS. With the help of the Bedouin resistance fighters the team races across the desert to a kasbah fortress prison to free her before she’s killed.
USA Today bestselling author, Suzanne Ferrell discovered romance novels in her aunt’s hidden stash one summer as a teenager. From that moment on she knew two things: she loved romance stories and someday she'd be writing her own. Her love for romances has only grown over the years. It took her a number of years and a secondary career as a nurse to finally start writing her own stories.
The author of 20 novels and an Amazon best-seller for both her series, the Edgars Family Novels and the Westen series, Suzanne's books have been finalists in the National Reader's Choice Awards--SEIZED (2013) and VANISHED (2014). Suzanne was also a double finalist in the Romance Writers of America's 2006 Golden Heart with her manuscripts, KIDNAPPED (Long Contemporary Category) and HUNTED (Romantic Suspense).
Currently working on more books for her Edgars Family series (KIDNAPPED, HUNTED, SEIZED, VANISHED, EXPOSED, UNMASKED and SHANGHAIED, part of a pre-WWII spy-chaser spin-off series) and the Westen Series (Close To Home, Close To The Edge, Close To The Fire, Close To Christmas, Close To The Mistletoe, Close To Santa’s Heart and Close To Danger), Suzanne hopes to bring readers more passionate and suspenseful books to fill your reading moments. Suzanne's sexy stories, whether they are her on the edge of your seat romantic suspense or the heartwarming small town stories or historical suspense novels, will keep you thinking about her characters long after their Happy Ever After is achieved.
I just love this series. The book is set in two parts, one before and and the second during the participation of America WW II, it gives a very realistic image of how things were back then.
Here we get the story of Warren, oldest member of the Folly and this time the team is sent to the French part of Morroco for some espionage. They need to go up a river which is very difficult to navigate even for a seasoned sailor as Warren. He's the most experienced sailor of the team and is a bit of a grumpy man. When the guy who was supposed to be their guide is replaced by Betty, a missionary nurse who's been helping the Bedouins along the river for a few years now, Warren is not impressed. He doesn't like having a female telling him how to do his job even if he feels an immediate attraction to Betty. Both the team and Betty are keeping secrets for their own protection.
When they arrive at their destination, Warren and Betty's feelings have grown but they have to separate. Warren goes back to America and Betty stays to help the Bedouins with medical care. They stay in contact through letters via the Embassy and during their absence their feelings change into love.
When America finally participates in WWII, Warren receives the terrible news that Betty has gone missing. The team sets of back to Morocco to try and save the woman who's come to mean the world to him.
I loved everything about this book. You can see how much research the author has done into the historical fact. I love the time setting, how different relationships were in those days. There's only one intimate scene in whole book but you can feel how much they feel for each other in so many other things.
I only hope Ms Ferrell won't take so long before the next book in this wonderful series releases.
Suzanne Ferrell knows how to write a story! Chief and Betty made a great couple. The couple only spent a few days together and the relationship deepened through letters but that was a common mode of courtship before WWII. The characters are smart and thoughtful. The story didn't get bogged down with over the top discussions and thoughts about sex. I appreciate all the research needed to produce a work of fiction that maintains the history of the time and region. Can't wait for the next Neptune's Five book. I wish these books were produced in audio.
CORNERED, book 3 in the Neptune's Five WW2 spy-chaser series is now up for pre-order at these retailers:#preorder #historicalromance #RomanticSuspense #ww2romance
CORNERED is the third book in the Neptune's Five WWII spy-chaser novels. In this book, our featured hero is Chief Petty Officer, Warren "Chief" Smith, the oldest and most seasoned sailor of the team.
The story is told in two parts because of some historical timeline issues. The first part is in August, 1941. Which makes it sandwiched between SHANGHAIED and TRACKED, the first two novels in the series.
Yeah, that's because my team are the spies in this book and are on a secret reconnaisance mission to French Morocco. America is still neutral and has a pact with the French Vichy government there to deliver supplies of food, goods and oil to them. If I had waited to start this story's timeline for after the end of TRACKED, the team would've been going into an enemy country as our neutrality with the Vichy government ended when we were at war with Germany.
The Neptune Five team is on a mission to learn what they can about the Axis forces in Morocco and how to navigate a particularly difficult river. To achieve this, they need a guide. Enter Elizabeth "Betty" Devereaux, an American missionary nurse who has traveled up the Sebou river many times. Warren isn't happy that he's required to use a woman to help him navigate this river, being attracted the dark-haired, blue-eyed beauty only adds to his irritation. As that irritation turns to admiration, he fears her safety when the team must return to the States, leaving her behind to continue her mission work.
Not a great move for a modern romance novel to seperate the hero and heroine. You're supposed to keep them together. Even strand them in isolation so they have to deal with their emotions and attraction for each other. Mine are now half-a-world apart. This was nearly a hundred years ago, so their communictions were limited. Long-distance calls were for emergencies due to their expense and cell phones were non-existant. The only option back then and for my characters was writing letters.
Then Pearl Harbor happened, trapping the heroine in enemy held territory. But she was still able to get her letters out through the Embassy in Spanish Morocco, which was still neutral. Through these letters Betty and Warren's attraction has turned to love.
Then the letters stop.
That takes us into November, 1942 and the eve of Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa. The team is on a seperate and very personal mission to find Betty.
