Sometimes life makes you play an unfair game.

As a pro hockey player, I’ve had desperate flirty women throw themselves at me, one after another for years. Today, it took only seconds for someone to walk into my home and have me completely forget about any other woman I’ve ever met.

A favor for an old teammate, I opened my penthouse to Charlee Mags, my new short-term roommate. When I said yes to this favor, I didn’t know how breathtakingly beautiful Charlee would be, or that I would come to enjoy hanging out with her, even crave being around her. It’s almost funny how much we have in common.

But Charlee has baggage.

I knew when she showed up at my door with a black eye, this could be a fragile situation, and I would do all I could to help her feel safe, but she doesn’t want to be the damsel in distress. Underneath her injury, she is an independent, strong-willed, funny woman who knows more about hockey than she originally lets on. And now I'm struggling to keep myself from falling for her.

Charlee Mags is the perfect woman for me.
One hundred percent my type.

I have no idea who hurt her or why, but when Charlee leans on me for support, one thing is certain.

I’ll be damned if anyone ever hurts her again.

*Author’s Note: This is a spicy adult romance novel and is not intended for children. Sensitive topics such as childhood cancer, infertility, and domestic abuse are discussed (but not seen) throughout this story.

Welp, I'm not sure if I'm the issue or what, but this book isn't clicking with me. There's something about the writing style and characters' lines that just feels a bit cringey. Also, I’ve noticed a few grammatical errors, and English isn’t even my first language!

So, Charlee, the FMC, just got out of a bad relationship. Well, actually, she called her best friend to help her escape since her ex (future?) was at an away game. After that, she's going to stay with Milo, the MMC, who just so happens to be a friend of her best friend's partner.

Anyway, this has insta-lust/insta-attraction from the get-go, and I just can't get on board with it.

In the two days she has been staying with him, they have already pretty much objectified each other mentally. Umm, I'm not sure how people normally deal with coming out of an abusive relationship, but I don't think this is the right way to go about it. For Pete’s sake they just met two days ago. 🫣

Also, she's way too comfortable moving around his apartment. I mean, he did say she could, but I feel like she should still be a bit hesitant at first, you know?

She was so at ease that on just the second day of her stay, when Milo came home, he found her wrapped in a little towel right after her shower. Tbf, she had no idea he was on his way. Still, I thought she might be a little shocked or something when she got caught like that. But no, she just didn't care. Instead of heading back to her room to change quickly, she did a few other things first and even had small talk with him while still in that tiny towel! 😬

I guess some people might not think there's anything off about this, and maybe it's just me overthinking it. But then again, she just got out of an abusive relationship and had "sworn off" men. But that all went right out the window the moment she laid eyes on him because, you know, he's just so "hot." 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, the MC's insta-something and writing style just aren't grabbing my attention, so I'm going to have to DNF this. It’s just not for me.

I’m only giving this four stars because I can’t give it halves or quarters.
There were so many your and you’re grammatical errors. That was literally the only problem.

This is a forced proximity, roommate, teddy bear MMC, confident and down-on-her-luck FMC running-away-from-domestic-violence situation. Our MMC, Milo, reads romance novels and is NOT shy about it, which we love to see. He’s one of the nice ones on the team, not much for hooking up, but also hasn’t necessarily had a long-standing relationship before either. But when Charlee, our FMC, walks into his apartment after his friend and former teammate calls to see if she can stay with him to get her away from an ex boyfriend, he can’t see any other woman the same way at all. Charlee is just his type, but he’s respectful enough to let her heal and take time for herself and even just hang out and get to know her. It seemed like these two had pretty natural chemistry right off the bat. They truly and genuinely enjoyed hanging out with each other when they had time. Charlee, who edits romance novels, works from home all day and it sounds like she gets a lot of work done and doesn’t mind being left alone while Milo goes to practice or has away games. I was actually super curious how they were even going to get together but the texting and the subtle and slow-play flirting felt natural and modern. Even Charlee getting kinda drunk one time and sending some selfies was natural and the progression, while a little faster than probably should have happened in real life for her getting over her ex and moving on by herself but is the way romance novels go, felt natural because she wasn’t necessarily looking for anything or trying to jump right into a relationship right after, but Milo truly fell into her lap. I just love how truly respectful as an MMC that Milo is. He truly wasn’t wanting to push her, and truly liked being her friend, but was slowly, or not so slowly, falling for her. Their spicy scenes were also quite cute, as Charlee was super grateful for how Milo was making her feel wanted and loved. She also fit right in with his friends, which we also love to see.

Emanuela - per RFS
.

Susan Renee has done it again.

She has left me relishing in the feelings of love and complete romance...

Charlee was myself and many other battered women I know. And when she finally finds love again... there is magic, disbelief, and shock. Something anyone who has been in this position can understand. And yet, when you find that person who is willing to see past the bagage and love you for who you are, doesn't pity you but admires you... it's a feeling that I didn't think could be put into words.. until Ms. Susan Renee decided to write this story.

I'm not going to lie - as someone who came out of multiple domestically abusive situations, I was terrified to read this book. I was afraid of what might get triggered. But Ms Susan Renee--- the genius -- she knew how to handle this particular situation with style, grace, class, respect, and holy fucking wow...the perfect spice.

Solid story, solid characters, solid spice, solid...just...perfectly solid.

I legit got this advanced copy at 3pm. It's now 11:42pm and I finished it. I could not put it down. If you need hope, inspiration, faith, reminders of true love and beauty..please...read this book. Because it will make you believe in love again - no matter your baggage.

Excellent. Funny and sexy and kind of sweet.

The scene at Milo’s surprise party with the erm “special gift” Charles bought for him was hilarious. I appreciated the fact that there wasn’t a lot of miscommunication drama which stemmed from the fact that Milo read romance novels so it gave him some insight on how NOT to screw up and lose the girl. Great little story, I’d say I can’t wait to read about the rest of the Redtails team but seeing as how most of the other players mentioned were married or in committed relationships already, I’m not quite sure how that would play out. At any rate, I’ll definitely look for other books from this author.

I am going to be honest—I thought Colby and Carrisa’s story was going to be hard to beat—but man this one was amazing! I can’t wait to read more in the series!

First off— Milo Landric is my newest dream book boyfriend! He LOVES romance books AND is a hockey player. He even refers to himself as a Golden Retriever. 🥰🥰🥰

His friend needs a favor—his wife’s best friend just got out of a DV relationship and needs a place to crash. She moves in with him and they become room mates to lovers. Charlee has a hard past and has some pretty heavy walls.. Milo wants to be everything for her. I just love their love story. It’s SO sweet.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 5/5 stars for me!

This was a fun, romantic and sweet story! Milo was a great character! He was everything I thought he would be and at the same time absolutely nothing like I was expecting! Lol! You will have to read the book to understand it! Charlee is sweet and I couldn't help but feel for her and want nothing but the best for her. The relationship between them was sweet, cute and it felt natural and real. This was good fun and easy to read!

I LOVED THIS STORY!!

OMG!! I’ve been following this author on Tick Tock waiting for the third book to release! This story did NOT disappoint at all though! So good!

Milo is so absolutely amazing! He is absolutely cinnamon roll with a hint of Alpha when it comes to Charlee and it was so cute when he brought out his alpha male side as he did it so rarely. They had an instant connection to each other like they were made for one another.

This story had me addicted and i finished it so fast!

I see that Dex is next and he will be a fun one to see fall as he seems like a great guy with a great sense of humor! He also has a protective side as you see when he talks about his sister! (I hope she gets a book also and with one of the team guys lol)

This book felt super rushed and had no slow burn or realistic build up. It was very rushed and unrealistic, and I feel like the female main character (Charlee) did nothing but cry throughout this whole book. Don’t recommend. I was super disappointed by this book 👎🏼

UNFAIR GAME: 5⭐️ 4🌶️

Teddy Bear
Goldilocks and her bear
This, I can do.

This was my first book by Susan Renee, and I now can’t wait to read the rest of the Chicago Red Tails series. Charlee and Milo were so cute together! From the time she walks through his doors Milo is nothing but respectful and kind to Charlee after her abusive ex, who also happens to be the center on an opposing hockey team, causes her to move across the country to get away from him. The attraction between the two is mutual but Milo never comes off as creepy or forceful of his feelings. Once feelings are known though? WHEW the spice is instant and I loved it. I also loved the found family aspect in this book when it came to the Red Tails. They were all so supportive of each other and really welcomed Charlee into their group while not making her feel pitted for her circumstances. The hockey in this book was also not too bad. I hate when I read a sports romance and there is barely any of the actual sport the MC is suppose to play in the book.

I am a big fan of books who dont portray their MC to be overly dominant and domineering in spicy scenes, and Susan Renee did a great job of showing mutual respect in the bedroom without too much ick for my taste. Plus can we take a moment to appreciate Charlee’s ability to gift give 🌟!?

Overall this book was a great quick read without being too intense giving some of the plot points. I feel like the heavy topics were handled well by the author and they were able to fit into the storyline. Something I would have liked to see more of would have been some character development; I felt like many times the characters were just written but didn’t have much depth to them. I love a little backstory about who they are as people and how they got where they were. I also would have liked to see more physical descriptions of the characters. Other than Charlee having curly brown hair there wasn't much in the way of telling us what the MC looked like.

-----
Things I loved about Milo:
RESPECTFUL KING
✸ protective but not overly possessive
✸ great with kids
✸ big 🍆

Things I Love about Charlie:
✸ strong
✸ passionate about her job and a good friend
✸ stood up for herself

Things that gave me the ick:
✸ McClaken (fuck that guy)
✸ the way the guys talk to each other (has the author ever interacted with men?)
✸ adopting two puppies from the same litter. littermate syndrome is real and not cool.
✸ how much queso they ordered. As a chicagoan and quest lover - you just can’t get that in restaurants here. Not an ick just made me jealous 😅

-----

🇹🇷🇴🇵🇪🇸
✸ forced proximity
✸ roommates
✸ hockey romance
✸ mutual pining
✸ friends to lovers

🇹🇷🇮🇬🇬🇪🇷🇸
✸ physical abuse (described from past event)
✸ infertility
✸ health issues (spoken of in past tense)

✨ Romance Comfort-Read Alert ✨

This review comes from a reader who loves:
🛑 No cheating / no OW-OM drama
💞 Low angst (together > apart)
🚫💔 No third-act breakup — I’m tired, and I want them happy
👑 Strong FMC
💪 Take-charge MMC
🔥 Reformed playboy > current manwhore, but never manwhore is preferred
💬 Miscommunication allowed if resolved like adults
🏡 HEA ALWAYS
Basically, I’m a sucker for a safe, insta-love, non-manwhore, if he wanted to, he would, probably a little unhinged, take charge, alpha male. I like my FMCs to be strong, stand up for themselves, not be a pushover, but not annoyingly independent/rejecting of help. Nothing annoys me more than a FMC that inserts herself into something a literal “professional” does, thinking she can do better.
I read for joy, vibes, and emotional safety. If you’re here for chaos and pain… we might not be reading the same book 😌📚 I also tend not to rework the summary into reviews because chances are you’ve already read it to get to the book review part of the show.

Literally just finished and couldn't race here fast enough to leave this review. First of all, I LOVED THIS BOOK SO DAMN MUCH. I have to yell it, I cannot help it. Especially after I just finished Nine Month Contract and HATED the very page it was printed on.

Charlee is so cute, not annoying, and going thru it. TW: There is domestic abuse (not with MMC), and she shows up at the MMC's house, via a friend, with a black eye. I really felt for Charlee. She was so strong, and going through so much, and I feel like it was well written and done. It could be triggering, especially her remembering the things her d-bag ex used to say to her.

Milo, the green flag, golden retriever, soft dom, consent king, and all around precious man, you are. Very much written by a woman, and I'll be damned if I'm not so sad he's not real. He was kind, thoughtful, patient, and every other perfect thing you'd want someone to be. Yes, he was attracted to her quickly, and to be fair, so was she, BUT I personally did n ot feel it was rushed. But, I also like it when the characters get together sooner rather than later because I want chapters and chapters of the good stuff.

Charlee and Milo definitely get their HEA. I was kicking my feet and saying "awww..." quite a bit.

Things to know about triggers: infertility, mention of remission from cancer, domestic abuse, there is a hockey fight and it is described.

Recensione

Buonasera lettori,

A presto 🥰

REVIEW:
Unfair Game is about the Chicago Red Tails Center Milo finding the woman of his dreams in Charlee. In the beginning Charlee had just needed a safe place to stay after leaving an abusive relationship. This time that Milo and Charlee spend living together really had them bonding as they had many things in common. Their romance began when Charlee found out that Milo loves to read romance novels while Milo finds out that Charlee edits romance novels. The moment that Charlee realizes that Milo is the exact opposite of her ex in the best way was great to read because she finally found a man who just wanted her. She understood that she can be herself with him and not be criticized.

The moment that Milo realizes that Charlee is the woman he needs in his life no matter if she hadn't told him everything about herself because when she met him she didn't know if she could trust him completely. It was nice to read that even though Charlee had cancer that made her unable to get pregnant Milo didn't care because he just wants her in his life with them having kids any way she wants. Now onto the next book in the series!

Is it wrong/weird to read a spicy romance book and think to yourself "I actually would have enjoyed this waaaaay more without the spice?" lol Because that's where I'm at with this one.

I liked the love story (although I do think it was a bit rushed and it would have been stronger without the insta-lust Milo is the perfect book boyfriend, I adored him, the consistent way he asked for consent and checked in on how she was feeling? *swoon* And Charlee, though wounded and in the process of healing, was still very much a strong, no-nonsense woman determined to pick herself up and move on with life. I loved these two together, I just wish the story would have dug a little deeper and spent more time building up their friendship and connection, less time on the steamy bedroom scenes. That said - there were several scenes in this book that made me laugh SO much. I read the infamous "birthday gift scene" while sitting in the waiting room at my daughter's dance studio, and I was definitely getting side eye from the other moms because I kept snickering to myself. So, well done, Susan Renee! 3.5 stars

This is my second time reading a book from the Chicago Red Tails series, and I'm almost certainly going to read more. They're light, quick, inexpensive Kindle reads and even though the writing isn't my usual cup of tea (so. many. grammatical. errors!) they're a fun way to unwind at the end of a busy day.

I don't think I've laughed so much during a romance in a long time.

Milo takes in Charlee when she flees her abusive boyfriend so take that into account if that's something that might trigger you.

The banter between these two is off the charts hilarious right from the start. Reading about their relationship going from Milo being a safe haven, to friendship, to love was such a treat and Susan deserves way more attention than she's already getting for the way she brings in humor, spice, and serious topics together so well in all of her books.

Milo is such a Golden Retriever of a boyfriend, loving Charlee without hesitation and wanting nothing more than to protect her from her past. I love when a book boyfriend reads romance novels and reads them to the Female Main Character. It's so endearing to read about a man willing to share that side of themselves so freely with their partner.

Charlee really does recover from her trauma as well as can be expected. She's a romance book editor and Susan found a brand new way to drop easter eggs from her previous books by making Charlee her editor. I laughed so hard at these scenes and it was like a hug from some of my favorite characters from her previous books!

This hockey series is so much fun and I cannot wait for more!

I loved Charlee and Miles. The starfish scene had me rolling 😂

“Uh, it’s this new thing. Hard to pronounce. I think they call it yo-gah.” “Oh, so she’s flexible and she’s a smartass too?” I mumble to myself and then give Charlee a wink. “Noted.”

The message accompanying a picture and video says, “Yes, we’ve been drinking. Yes, she went through your closet because she misses you (shhhhh! Don’t tell her I told you) so I thought you might want to see this with your own eyes. Good luck tonight, Milo! She’s rooting for you.” *wink emoji* My jaw drops when I open a picture of Charlee. She’s wearing one of my jerseys and a pair of my socks that go up to her knees like leg warmers. Her dark brown waves are piled high on her head in a knot, and she does not appear to be wearing pants. She’s sitting in the corner of the couch with her legs propped up in front of her. My jersey is pulled up under her nose and her eyes are closed. She’s sniffing my jersey. She’s sniffing me. I’ve never seen a more gorgeous picture.

Unfair Game is an emotional, gripping, and utterly addictive romance that had me hooked from start to finish. Susan Renee weaves a story filled with tension, heartbreak, and a love that refuses to fade, no matter the obstacles.

Tropes to love:
- Sports Romance
- Second Chance Love
- Forced Proximity
- Angst & Heartbreak
- Protective but Emotionally Guarded Hero

The spice level? 🔥🔥🔥🔥 (4/5 – intense and passionate). The chemistry between the characters is undeniable, and every moment between them is filled with longing, tension, and that just one more chance kind of desperation that makes second-chance romances so addictive.

And then… that plot twist. Just when I thought I knew how things would unfold, Renee hit me with a curveball. The emotions, the choices, the regrets—I felt everything. The story isn’t just about love; it’s about fighting for it, even when the odds feel impossible.

If you love sports romance with high stakes, deep emotions, and a second-chance love that hurts before it heals, Unfair Game is a must-read. Prepare for all the feels.

Chicago Red Tails: Book Two

I was so excited to receive both books in the mail. When the first book was over I jumped right into this one. It kept all of the characters fresh in my head. I really enjoyed this hockey romance. The whole team of guys are great. The way they all joked around with each other is so funny. Milo was just so darn sweet through out this entire story. I felt so bad for how Charlee’s story began. She really deserved that epic ending! Charlee and Milo started to get to know each other so well. I was wondering who would take their relationship to the next level and whether Charlee was even ready for anything more. She fit in with the team and the girls so perfectly, it was so nice to see. Her connection with hockey was way deeper than what I expected. I’m so glad there wasn’t the typical fall out moment towards the end. I really enjoyed how the story flowed. I will definitely read book three whenever that is published.
