[ Final review to come ]:

He casually told Lexi that he’d already seen him before he was born, in the so-called “waiting room”. When pushed to explain at Lexi’s request he tried to make sense of it himself, stating that he didn’t know how it worked other than that the souls were repeatedly born into the same family and that sometimes the returning soul could be a brother, an auntie, a mother or a father. Lexi was more confused the more he tried to explain that souls didn’t have genders or appearances; they just were.

This book has such a cool concept! Once a month on the full moon, for ten minutes at 3.30am, certain individuals disappear and see their departed loved ones.

‘As I understand it, there must’ve been some seismic shift on the night of the storm, I guess. No-one knows. Everyone here watches their loved ones – sometimes we’re seen, most times not. But those born on 16th October 1987, or the “16/87s”, as they call you…no-one really knows.’

RTC.

Thoughts as I read:

- I wish Josh and Lexi's scenes were longer. There's so much happening between them, and a lot of it is really intense, and I wish there was more to show how they were dealing with everything more in detail.
- I'm not sure where the storyline of one character is going, so perhaps it'll be answered later on, but it really bothers me that one of the characters named her daughter after her rapist. Like, the character is deeply tragic and I felt so awful for her, but I absolutely cannot fathom her decision to name her daughter after him, especially since she says from the afterlife that she was going to turn him in eventually. Like, then why did you name your daughter after him?? I feel like we're going to get more of her later on, so her reasoning will probably be explained, but right now it's just making me so mad on the daughter's behalf. Poor thing.
- The 16/87 mystery is definitely intriguing. I honestly can't predict where the plot is going at all and the mystery of it all is really drawing me in!
- Kind of surprised one of the characters hasn't been seen disappearing from prison yet?? It mentions that she wanted to be in solitary and it was refused, so I'm sort of shocked that in all her time in gen pop, this hasn't been seen. But I think that's what the new cellmate is probably moving towards.
- I really like Josh as a character and I'm very curious about where his storyline's going! I want his scenes to be longer!! Lmao.

Thank you so much to the author for a paperback copy.

I read this book thanks to NetGalley. October 16th 1987 had two things happen. One: many fathers died. Two: many girls were born. Jess, one of the baby girls born, has always “slipped” for ten minutes every night since her birth. Now, approaching her thirtieth birthday, she’s ready for some answers. I found the premise of this book to be so unique and intriguing. We get so many back stories and points of view which I loved. I enjoyed the writing style and felt like the sub plots were interesting and not overwhelming. However, while getting so many backstories added a lot of interesting information it also added a lot of confusion trying to keep everyone straight. Truthfully I felt like I needed a flow chart to graph the families and other connections. My other main issue was the ending. I understand a sequel is planned so I get the set up but I think an event that happens in the finale changed the whole story for the worse and could have been left out while still allowing the sequel set up.

I was kindly sent a copy of #slipped by the author herself and I'm really glad she did.

#juliewalker has written a rather unique tale.

We follow Jess and her new boyfriend Josh as they begin to find the '16/87s'. A group of people who were all born on the 16th of October 1987, at the same moment that their father's passed away.

What makes them really special is that at 3.30am every full moon every 16/87 slips... meaning they disappear, only for 10 minutes, but that's long enough. And each time they vanish, these chosen few get to spend time with their deceased dads.

The story itself is set in 2017 and is cleverly set over 12 months, twelve full moons and with each one more 16/87s are discovered and the reason for their journeys becomes clearer with each slip.

I loved how distinctive this tale was. With a quirky concept, the author manages to showcase the complexities of life and death and how it can change so many lives in the process.

Captivating and imaginative. I found it all quote poignant, the connections formed throughout the book were cleverly weaved together and the twist at the end was a nice segway into what I assume will be a sequel.

I'm looking forward to reading what the author writes next.

Another fabulous novel from the author of The Gift Of Time. The plot is very clever and highly original. I found it fascinating and totally engaging from the very beginning.
The author has that rare skill of being able to create numerous vignettes in the same book, fill them with well drawn characters, and then mould them into an impressive ensemble.
There's plenty of fantasy here but the story is also grounded in the harsh realities of life and death, and all that comes between.
There are many thought-provoking and poignant moments and the ever present risk of disturbing the space-time continuum. I highly recommend this book.

In the great storm of 1987, around the world, multiple baby girls were born. Their common thread was that their fathers died on the day they were born. Julie Walker’s Slipped weaves an intricate web involving a group of women who “slip” from their universe at the full moon to an alternate one where they reunite with their deceased fathers for 10 minutes before returning to their own reality. I found the premise to be captivating and well written. The character development of each young girl, and how the death of their father affected them and their families over the span of 30 years was masterful. Imaginative and Engaging! I would recommend this book!

Thank you to Netgalley and Matador for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review

DNFed

The summary of this story really piqued my interest and I was excited enough to take a gamble and read it but it was not the book for me. I have trouble with books that are not well written and this was an example of poor writing. It was very hard to follow, everything felt clunky and disjointed. There were references to things and people that don't appear in the story. It was hard to follow and I was unable to finish the whole book.

An interesting premise…slipping through time every full moon because of the circumstances at your birth. I was intrigued by this thought. Curious what would be done with it. However, this is clearly a “book 1”. We met a large cast of “slippers” each with their own tragic past, but then barely got to the action when the book ended. Now I have more questions than answers!

Thank you NetGalley, Matador, and author Julie Walker for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. “Slipped” was published April 28, 2023!

First of all I want to say thank you to Netgalley and the publishers as I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the premise of this book but I wasn't drawn in to the style it was written. I found it quite hard getting drawn in especially at the beginning as it felt a bit chaotic with the dialogue and there are quite a few things that happen throughout the book that are not explained or seem irrelevant, and I felt as though the book just built up to what could have been a good ending but then ended which was quite disappointing.

There is a “plot twist” at the end that was massively unnecessary and attempted to make a story out of something that didn’t need adding to the book-no spoilers but seriously it shouldn’t be used as a plot point. The rest of the book was fine-the story was quite good except nonsensical. The dialogue between basically ALL of the characters was very poor-at the start of the book a drunk man says he’s falling for another character after having met her only a few hours earlier at his sisters wake that she’s staffing. Right ok sure. The general interactions between all the characters (and there are a LOT) just few very clunky and there are constant references to people being upset/annoyed at other people that are never discussed-the story just moved past them as if they never happened so why include them?

When I read the blurb of this book I loved the idea of it and the story didn't disappoint at all. I was totally engaged in the lives of the different characters. I loved the ending, thought it was sweet and rounded it off nicely. Absolutely recommend this book

From reading the blurb I immediately loved the premise of this book, and the story definitely did not disappoint. I was engrossed in the character’s lives, and Julie’s style of writing is beautiful. Such a page turner - 100% recommend for anyone who loves deep character descriptions and connections, is looking for a book with a new concept and one that you can’t put down. The ending was fantastic and I can’t wait for the next one!
