Ruff McPaw Mysteries #2

Rapid Rodent Response

Rate this book
A squeaky-clean murder, a little furry witness…

For such a small town, Hummings Hollow is rife with danger and intrigue—especially for forty-year-old Angela Atkinson who despite her busy schedule can’t seem to keep her nose out of a good mystery; it doesn’t help that her faithful sidekick Ruff McPaw has an equally good nose for danger.

When a middle school janitor is found dead in a school supply closet, Angela must juggle her hobby farm, barista job, and well-meaning community of friends and family as she seeks out answers. When a classroom pet turns up with what might be the key to solving the whole case, Angela feels that the killer is close at hand—but there’s more to this clue than meets the eye.

From a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) that seems more like a high school clique than anything else to possible motives that feel shaky at best, Angela and Ruff have plenty to investigate before the middle school’s Valentine’s Day dance marks the murderer’s final escape from the swift paw of justice…

Rapid Rodent Response is the second book in the Ruff McPaw Mysteries series. If you adore intriguing cozy mysteries with beautiful small towns and a really adorable dog, then you won’t want to miss out on Angela and Ruff's fun and unforgettable cases.

At times Angela can be so frustrating to me, when she ignores signals from her dog Ruff. She knows he's the brains and nose of the duo, yet she bypasses his intuition and his greatest strength - his nose!!!! This was a close call because some clues pointed to several people, and Angela could have railroaded an innocent person . All's well that ends well, I guess. The right person landed in jail. I would hope those troubled students get some much needed help before they're in real trouble. I voluntarily read a free copy of this book provided by book sirens and am giving an honest opinion.

this book was not awful, but it had several elements that took me out of the story. the first one being that it was not perfectly edited and proofread; it had some strange sentences that didn't make complete sense, and at one point the main character was referred to as "Angel" despite her name being "Angela." Also, it's hard to believe that everyone in this town is completely ok with a random pet, not a service animal, being inside of almost every indoor location-- the middle school, the coffee shop (which is probably a health and safety hazard for this dog to be inside), even inside the police station for official interrogations. the police chief shows some annoyance at having the dog in the station, but he's the chief, can he not ask Angela to keep the dog outside?? I'm an animal lover myself and would love to be able to take my pets everywhere with me, but Angela bringing Ruff almost everywhere with her just does not seem at all realistic. Also, Angela would constantly get upset when the police chief would say something was "official police business" or some other saying implying the task at hand was only for police officers/staff, but Angela constantly says how the police academy isn't "for her" and has no intention of becoming an officer, so why are you getting upset that you aren't being treated like a police officer?? Also there is probably some legal issues of having a random civilian with so much insider access to an active murder case, although I'm no expert in police proceedings. Overall this book was not terrible, and I haven't read the first book in the series, which might give clarity to some of the things that took me out of the story. It was a cute little mystery story with lots of fun animals, however I would not recommend this book to anyone except maybe a middle schooler or someone younger who could look past the questionable realism.

When Ramon Ramirez, a middle school janitor, is found dead in a supply closet, Angela Atkinson can't help but try to solve the mystery. It seems that Ramon was a strictly-by-the-rules person, which created a lot of enemies. Another issue is that while the body was found in the supply room, it does not appear to be where he was killed. The investigation reveals he was probably killed in David Pemberley's classroom and then the body was moved to the supply closet. David's pet hamster, Rufio, may have swallowed a potential clue. The murder also happened a couple of days before the Valentine's Day Dance at the school and many are worried that the dance may be cancelled. Members of the PTA appear to be a good source of gossip. In an attempt to get some information, Angela volunteers to help with the Valentine's Dance decorations..

Who killed Ramon? Why was he killed? Was his death intentional or accidental? Can Angela and Ruff sort through the clues to unravel the mystery?

Max Parrott has a wonderful mystery with the second Ruff McPaw adventure. He has wonderful characters with everyday situations we can all relate to (other than the murder). The story has plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged clear to the end.

Once I started this second book in the series, like the first, I couldn't put it down! One of the school's janitors, Roman, was so by the book that he became very disliked by teachers, administrators and parents alike. Was it a surprise he was found murdered and stuffed in a closet? Angela, who just happened to be at the school when he was discovered is now engrossed in finding out what happened much to the chagrin of the local police chief. And although she has so much on her plate, what with being a barista at the local coffee shop and having a small farm with lots of animals to care for doesn't matter when there is a murder. And of course with her incredibly smart super sleuth pup, Ruff. I loved hearing his frustration in his thoughts that although he finds clues and is a huge help, he can't talk to Angela! He also acts as her support dog, calming her down and showing his love for her. I loved this story and how Angela can weave her way into the Chief's investigation. Who killed Roman and why? I can't wait to read the next book in this series! I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Angela and Ruff are at it again! That poor janitor! Angie's got her work cut out for her on her second case. She's got a new ally in her corner at the station and a budding additions to her personal life to keep up with. Once again, everything is handled well by the author and delivered beautifully. I received an ARC copy that had one word for word duplicate paragraph, but everything else was great!

Despite this being a cozy, straightforward read, I almost got tripped up in solving this one. Almost! I feel that the culprit in this one was less obvious, but I was still able to figure things out relatively quickly after starting. Keeps things interesting, I think. I recommend this one as much as I do the first installment of the series. Ruff, a new furry friend, David, Michelle, Megan....just everyone lol. All characters are great and the humor peppered throughout the book made this another fun read for me. Keep it going!!

Another winner from the author of this cozy series. Big changes (no spoilers) are the the cards for Angela and Ruff. I raced right into the next two books of the series, so I already know how things turn out. I encourage everyone to keep reading :)

Rapid Rodent Response is a cute title for the second book in the Ruff McPaw Mysteries series. It was nice to return to their small town and reconnect with Angela, Ruff and the others. Of course, there's another mystery to solve and Angela is not only in the thick of things once again but often times feeding the chief clues and new directions to look into.

The story was often playful and filled with family and friends. Set at a middle school there were teens causing problems along with some issues between staff members as well. The story has a good flow and was quick paced. There were a lot of animals as well as coffee drinks. There is closure with the solving of the crime and a few surprises too. I look forward to returning to this series to see what Angela, Ruff and the others are up to next.

A cozy mystery filled with lots of clues to figure out whodunnit and wonderful main characters had me turning the pages to see what would happen next!

Great Home-Town 'Who-Dun-It'
Hummings Hollow is a Great small town... it has its ups and downs. It also has a really interesting barista at the local coffee shop, Angela Atkinson, who also loves to 'help out' the local police from time to time, along with her best bud Ruff McPaw! She also has a small farm of animals that she kind of collects , and loves to take care of.
A local janitor is found dead in a closet in the school... hmmm... why a janitor?
So, it really get interesting as Angela gets involved, ends up volunteering with the PTA for the Middle School Dance. Oh, and she gets paired up with a teacher there (before the murder), David, who is really nice, and always wears these sweater vests... ughh
So, if you mix ALL that wonderful stuff together, you have a really GREAT STORY!
Thank You, Max Parrott for yet Another Great Story!
I received an advance copy of the book and this is my honest review.

This is the second book in the Ruff McPaw series I’ve read and really enjoyed them both. Angela and her trusty sidekick Ruff are a mystery and murder solving duo. Angela has a farm with a variety of animals, and also works as a barista at a coffee shop, when she and Ruff aren’t sleuthing! I love reading Ruff’s thoughts, they’re funny as well as insightful, if only he could figure how to better communicate them to Angela! This time Roman, a longtime janitor at the middle school is found dead in the janitor’s closet. He was a black and white guy allowing no room for exceptions and so not reall popular, but who would want to kill him? It’s fun to watch Angela and Ruff investigate and bump heads with the local police chief! I received a free ARC of this book and write this review voluntarily.

In Rapid Rodent Response, the second in the Ruff McPaw Mystery series, a middle school janitor, is found dead in a supply closet and of course Ruff and Angela can’t stay away. Ruff, a collie, takes an active part in solving crimes and it is fun to watch him try and communicate. Angela, has a lot going on – she is a barista by day, an owner of a mini farm, a responsible child of aging parents, and has to get involved in any mystery that comes to their tiny town. Members of the PTA appear to be a good source of gossip and so she tries to infiltrate their group to find clues. I love the characters both human and animal. Lots of right and wrong turns that will keep you engaged right up until the surprise ending – perfect for a mystery cozy. Thanks to BookSiren for the ARC of this book. Can’t wait until the next book in this series.

This is the second book of Ruff McPaw Mysteries Series, and like the first one it was a delight to read. A nice short book with lovely characters, set in a small town where some odd murders keep happening.

Angela Atkinson, half farmer, half barista and her loyal border collie Ruff help the police finding the murderer of Roman, one of the janitors of the local High School. There are a lot of suspects in the universe of the school, but once more Ruff gives the precious help finding the most important clues. David, the sweet teacher who loves wool vests is becoming a serious contender of Angela's heart.

In my opinion, this book is a cozy mystery, nice and clean, perfect for relaxing.

Rapid Rodent Response is book #2 in the Ruff McPaw Mysteries series by Max Parrott.

Angie is worn out with her barista job, hobby farm, and worrying about her mom. Getting involved in another murder investigation takes what little free time she has. Ruff and everyone else are worried about her.

I really enjoyed this book. If only Ruff could easily communicate with Angie, she’d have an easier time. I like the characters in this book and how everyone is concerned about Angie and how they try to help her. The mystery was challenging when the victim is such a private person. I like the decision Angie made at the end and look forward to her next adventure.

In book 2, Ruff, the wonder dog detective and his sidekick Angela are at it again. Lol. Angela might disagree but ask Ruff; he’s in charge.
This time the murder has taken place at the school and Angela has to cozy up to the PTA in her search for clues. Her friends and family are concerned that Angela is doing too much and should back off and let the police handle the investigation. Right, like that’ll happen!
As you can tell, I’m a huge fan of Ruff. Angela’s pretty cool too. I love all the characters and the story moves right along. I finished this in one day and I’ve already started book 3.

A fun cozy mystery. Oh, if only dogs could talk; crimes would get solved so much faster!
Angela and her furry sidekick assist the police in solving a murder that involved a little hamster.
Between her small farm, her aging parents, her part-time job, and her crime solving passion, Angela is wearing herself out. She comes to a big decision when solving the crime.
I really enjoyed the story and how influential the dog was. Smart dog!
Can't wait for the next story in the series.
I was provided an ARC of the book by BookSirens. This is my honest review.

I really enjoyed this story.

The characters are fun and very realistic. The mystery was very well done and altho I was sure I knew who did the crime, I was wrong. So the mystery really stayed that way until the reveal.
Angela is on the case of a murdered janitor and she and her dog are desperate for clues. Any clues! Her dog finds the clue that leads to finding the true killer.....but was it an accident, after all?

I definitely recommend this book!

Angela and her dog Ruff are assisting the police on another murder case, this time a janitor from the middle school. As Angela investigates, she, along with Ruff, her parents and friends, notice she is looking and feeling very tired. Book 2 of this series can be read as a stand alone. It is developing Angela's character more deeply. I enjoy all the main characters in this book. New people are introduced to keep the action moving and widen the suspect pool. This is a quick fun cozy read.

I’m liking this series a lot better now that I’ve read the second book and gotten more of a feel for the different characters. I just love Ruff and wish Angela knew what he was thinking, but Ruff does a darn good job communicating when he needs to. And he does always find something super useful for the case. The showdown was good and the non-dangerous type I enjoy a lot. The gathering at the end of the book was fun since Angela had a special announcement for everyone. Can’t wait to borrow and read the next book in KU!

This is a fun story about a woman whose curiosity and puzzle solving skills keeps getting her getting mixed signals from the police department she is trying to help. The characters are vivid, the plot is easily followed, and the premise is finding out who killed the head janitor in the town's school and why. In this case being a completely black and white person, whose judgements and rule following got him killed. He forgot the most important rule, "Judge not, lest ye be judged and found lacking". The answers are found, and the right person caught. I definitely recommend this book.

Roman, a janitor at the middle school, was found dead in a supply closet. Angela saw the commotion and decided to see what was going on. The chief of police wasn't happy to see her.

Angela couldn't help but get involved trying to help the police find evidence pointing to who murdered Roman. You'll have to read the book to find out exactly what happened. It will surprise you.

I received a free ARC, and this is my honest opinion.

Rapid Rodent Response is Book 2 in the Ruff McPaw Mysteries by Max Parrott. I enjoy this series. Angela and her dog, Ruff McPaw, are wonderful characters. This clean, cozy mystery was so fun! Max has taken the talking dog sidekick and writes Ruff as a normal dog who loves his human and has to find ways to communicate with her because he CAN'T talk. It makes these characters so much more realistic, so the reader feels like they're a member of Hummings Hollow.
The mystery is well written with some twists that are pretty surprising. I definitely recommend this if you love cozies.

The school janitor wasn’t well liked, so it is no surprise that there are plenty of suspects when he is murdered. Angela’s plate is already pretty full, but she’ll have to push herself to solve this case. This was a fun mystery with interesting characters. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.

I love how Ruff tries to communicate with her and how he helps to work on the case. I hope that there are many more books in this series.

Angela Atkinson, 41, is one of the first people in Humming Hollows to learn about middle school janitor Roman Ramirez’s death. "He was located in the supply closet this morning.” Angela widened her eyes. “Dead?” Since diners often avoid servers, she gets the news first as a barista in the town’s lone coffee shop. Once breakfast was over, the informal detective left work. Ruff McPaw, her loyal border dog, entered her truck on the driver's side.

“You thought you would do the same with this one since you forced your way into the last case?” Chief Helbar crossed his arms. “We solved plenty of crimes around here before you, Ms. Atkinson.” The chief disliked an amateur sleuth interfering with his work. She felt sick and determined; Roman’s fate was tragic and unnecessary. Rufio is a lively orange and white fur-covered hamster who is the woman’s sidekick. He probably helped solve the murder mystery better than anyone else. How could a hamster solve a murder? Plot twists reveal clues in the complex story.
I connected with Ruff because his thoughts touched me. Ruff becomes Angela’s companion, giving emotional support and having semi-telepathic discussions. Read how this works, just for fun. Roman was found in the supply closet this morning.
Angela, Ruff, and David, a middle school English teacher, are in a tight situation as they find out who killed Roman, a school janitor. David and Angela are developing trust and working seamlessly. These independent people like the status quo. Angela is getting more stressed because of her work, passions, hobbies, and friendships. Thus, she cannot allow herself to fall in love.

With his remarkable imagination and great sense of humor, Max Parrott is a highly skilled author. Parrott’s charming tale meets our expectations of a cozy novel. It zips through at 155 pages. Angela's demeanor and the dog and hamster that became friends captivated me. The plot twists often surprised me in this sophisticated story.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.. If you like cozy books, read Rapid Rodent Response soon. This cozy mystery comprises mystery, action, suspense, humor, and romance. The book is vulgarity-free, with sex and violence occurring off-page.

Took a few books to like the series

The first book didn't make the characters real or interesting but I decided to try book 2. Now the characters are real. The best thing so far is Ruff McPaw. The dog can't "talk" to his owner like in paranormal books, but he captures clues and manages to communicate in 'doggy ways" ....that's impressive.

Ruff McPaw series

This second book is just as entertaining and smooth flowing as first. I enjoyed reading it with Ruff’s “italicized”comments to no one in particular!! His actions and Angela’s reactions to him. It’s a great little story to pass the while’s with!!
