You can escape a palace, but a curse may follow wherever you go…

The gods are not happy. The king they preserved upon the throne of Viridiana is dead, a pretender sitting in his place. Until they get what they desire, their wrath will know no bounds.

Leda escaped death at the hands of her sister and finally lives the independent life she always dreamed of. But no one can renounce the title of Counterpart and walk away unscathed.

Horrific tragedies are striking the Five Kingdoms, leaving mass death and destruction in their wake, and they are inextricably linked with Leda’s family. Haunted by her past, she must choose between her new life and putting her freedom aside to save those she wishes she didn’t love.

It will lead her back to the dark and glittering court that she hates and the man wearing the corrupt crown, whose temptation she must resist at all costs.

THESE FRIGGIN BOOKS ❤️ Book 1 took out my beating heart from my chest and threw it in boiling water. I was so thankful that the sequel was releasing only a few months later because I was seriously not breathing until I had my hands on it.

The wait was SO WORTH IT!!😭

This is a NA fantasy series with a slowburn romance to the levels of Pride & Prejudice (think of hand twitch scene!). This series is dark, full of court intrigue, rebellion, betrayal, and the author isn’t afraid to rip our hearts out 😭❤️ the story itself is so UNIQUE which is not easy to accomplish nowadays in NA fantasy.

Book 2 was exactly what I was hoping for and more! We get that slowburn angst, however my favorite part was the blooming relationship of the siblings. After so many years of hate and fear that created a wall between heirs and their counterparts, they finally had a second chance at actually being a family! And the fun part is that they have no idea how do that, which results in lots of fun bickering !😂 this series has everything, amazing characters, adorable romance, suspenseful plot, I’m addicted!

Ella Pyne is an author to look out for 👀🔥

My life will have no meaning until I have the third book in my hand. What a mind-blowing ending!

Conspirator is book 2 in The Gemdark Dynasty, which has officially claimed its spot as one of my favorite series of the year and ever! If you’re curious to see my review book 1, Conspirator, you can do so here.

In book 1, we were introduced to the brutal court of the King of Viridiana, who had his royal children sacrifice his bastard born children, known as Counterparts, so that the gods will allow him to remain on the throne and conquer the other kingdoms. This book instead focuses on the events after the ending of book 1 and a curse on the Locarno line that sees Leda and her siblings still in great peril and that is seemingly tied to natural disasters destroying the Five Kingdoms. Everything that made the first book so intriguing is still there—the court politics and intrigue, the complicated sibling dynamics, the twists and the romance, which technically isn’t as forbidden anymore but still pulls at my heartstrings and has an even bigger presence in this second installment. I’ve underlined the simplest of interactions to the angstiest scenes between Leda and Phyrrus. I love how they match wits, how he’s calm and collected with everyone else but he can’t always control himself with her because Leda is the only one who can possibly get under his skin. Phyrrus’s scholarly charm and gentlemanly manners make me swoon—especially because it’s so fun seeing how he comes undone with Leda.

I’m very excited for the next book, especially after that ending! I require Phyrrus, Leda and (most of) her siblings to be okay. PLEASE read this book so we can scream together!

Thank you to the author for gifting me an eARC. Opinions are my own.

THIS. FREAKING. BOOK.

I’m gonna need a minute 😭😭😭

OOOOK I’ve had a chance to collect myself. This series has quickly occupied a top spot in my all time fave fantasy reads. It’s just 100% unique…the closest comp is The Hunger Games but it also completely stands on its own and in no way feels like a replica.

Book two was fantastic. It in no way suffered from the common “second book syndrome” that tends to plague fantasy series. The court politics and intrigue are still prevalent in this book and you still find yourself completely caught up in the goings on of the court. The sibling relationships are still incredibly complicated and fascinating…how do you navigate the new family dynamics in a world in which your siblings are no longer doomed for sacrifice? And the slow burn tension heavy romance is still just as delightful. The TENSION. Gosh it’s so good.

Absolutely cannot wait for book three. Pleaseeee read this series y’all, and then DM me so we can freak out together!

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

That better be a cliffhanger. We better be getting a book 3 cause I’m crying over here.
Besides me still sitting here in shock, this book was amazing. It took me a while in the first book to get into it, but once I did, I couldn’t put it down. That feeling started right from the beginning with book two. I literally could not put it down. The twists and turns and surprises left me gasping many times. Also, Leda has more willpower than me cause I would’ve folded like a piece of paper at least a dozen times within the first 15% of the book for Pyrrhus. Also, once again Azaria really messing with my feelings. She scares me, but I weirdly loved her, but at the same time, that ending!
Yeah, if you haven’t already read book one, what are you doing. This series is amazing! Buckle in, you won’t be able to put it down.
Thank you to BookSiren & the author for providing an advance reader copy for my honest review.

What I liked

This book's dive into the aftermath of the events in Book 1 was an interesting one. There were a lot more action scenes which, in turn, made this book extremely readable. IIRC, I went thru 75% of it in one sitting cuz I just needed to know how certain things were going to get resolved.

What I didn't like

1. Based on the worldbuilding (electricity didn't exist (neither did guns), ppl traveled by foot, horseriding or carriages, etc), the books were set in an ambiguous pre-1700s time period. I also understand that this is a fantasy, etc. HOWEVER, there are several instances of characters using contemporary words and phrases (such as ) that almost took me out of the story. Although there were instances of that modernity popping up in the first book, I felt they occurred more often here.

2. Despite a huge part of the story being abt finding out the Big Bad, I did a quadruple take when [Character] was revealed to be evil. It felt v. sudden? Looking back, I could fit the clues to explain that Character turning out to be the Big Bad, but IDK. I can't say I was fully convinced...and I can't go into it without spoilers.

Trigger/Content Warnings:

TL;DR: OTOH, I was fascinated by the fast moving plot in Book 2. My emotional engagement was pretty high throughout most of the story too. OTOH, however, I'm still v. ???? abt the Big Bag's identity (though I get their motives) and the weird modern verbiage that appeared here and there.

While I wouldn't say this book was full downgrade from Book 1, but it didn't keep the yays from the first novel. All in all, I do plan to finish the series (have already begun reading Book 3) with hopes that it sticks the landing.

I borrowed this book via KU.

"The pain never goes away, Eber. You can mask it, until the mask becomes more toxic for you that what you're covering it with."

The second installment of the Gemdark Dynasty was just as riveting as the first. With treachery around every corner and the Gods wrath being laid upon the land, Leda must find a solution to save herself, her family and the one she loves. But is her decision selfish if thousands of people suffer?

I did enjoy the first book more than the second. Only because it was more fast-paced than this one. I could not put it down and literally read it in one sitting. This book was still interesting but didn't hold my attention the same. It was slower it took longer to get into the action. Luckily once I got into the story and the stakes really started to get high I was completely immersed in the book.

The plot twists were everywhere in this book! Things happened and my emotions were all over the place!! The characters were just as amazing as I remembered and each of them have their own distinct personality and affect the plot in their own way. The side characters actually made this book what it was! As always Leda was constantly in trouble and I live for it! She is literally so strong and resilient like literal goddess! Pyrrhus, omg this man! I loved him!! And the tension and banter between them like they were literally made for eachother! And the author seriously tortured us with that ending like seriously!!!

Anyway highly recommend you go check out book one because it was soooooo good!!! Cannot wait for the next book! Thank you to the author and BookSirens for the arc, this in no way influenced my review.

Leda deserved better from everyone, including Pyne.

Before I get into my rant, I want to say that I was devastated to learn this is an incomplete trilogy (I will be reading book 3 as soon as it comes out, which thankfully is soon) because I NEED to know what happens. I love Leda and Pyrrhus (I nearly threw my book across the room at "did you just relocate me to your favorite desk?"), I love their banter and shared passion for learning. I love Eber, who needs to be protected at all costs. And I love Pyne's style of writing. I DEVOURED this book in one sitting.

But this book, while it entertained me, also had some of my biggest pet-peeves.

I originally gave this 4 stars, but after thinking about it for a day, I'm dropping my rating to 3 stars. Why? Because Leda was robbed of her agency in every moment. She lived in everyone else's world except her own, and even when she thought she was on her own (spoiler), she wasn't. Everyone else got to be successful with their plans except for her, and as I write this, that infuriates me.

In book 1, I rooted for Leda at every moment, but from the start of book 2, I just wanted her to tell everyone off and go live by herself. After living her entire life as a Counterpart, she deserved to be selfish. And I would've been fine with others guilting her into thinking that was wrong except that it felt like Pyne also wanted us, the readers, to believe that. Her character growth was to give more of herself for her siblings and her kingdom.

The twists and turns were entertaining, but none of them came from Leda. Everyone else figured stuff out, found the person they needed to talk to, etc and Leda kind of prattled along beside them. Why couldn't she have figured out how to bypass the curse? Or who was killing Counterparts? Or anything? It had to be Ambrose or Pyrrhus or Azaria.

Please Pyne, let Leda shine in book 3. Let her be the mastermind that truly does stop her father's legacy.

I’m sorry, but no.
I really liked the first book. It was something different and was well paced. What I liked the most were the sibling dynamics. I found it very interesting how they all interacted with each other. Especially the relationship between Leda and Azaria.
This is also pretty much the only thing I liked about the second book UNTIL those last few chapters. Like, what the hell happened????
It just didn’t make sense to me. Maybe it’s just me, but I really didn’t like how Elina and Azaria just stabbed each other and the counterparts in the back. The whole book was about them getting to know each other better and figure out their new dynamics now the counterparts no longer needed to die. And then it ends like this?! Why, whats the purpose?
Yes, Elina was annoying and cared a lot about the gods. But it seemed like she did actually care about her siblings too, her being the killer just wasn’t quite it. I can kind off understand, but I definitely do not like it. What shocked me most was actually Azaria’s role in this. Yes, we knew she was psycho. But atleast I thought she was an honest one. That she meant it when she said she didn’t want to be queen, it felt genuine. And then in the very end she still decides to kill the counterparts?! It doesn’t make sense!

But that actually brings me to the next part that really annoyed me about these books. The Gods. It annoys me so much how little they are explained. Like, what are their names? How many are there? We know nothing about them. And even though Leda can’t hear them personally, they are probably being spoken of in church right? They are just such a mystery and not in a good way. It just makes the book confusing. Maybe if the gods are explained more, the actions of the characters will make more sense to. Cause I feel like Azaria was heavily influenced by them in the end. But it is just too vague, too little is known about them.

I feel like the only way there can be redemption for book 3 is when those gods get explained more. Because they are such an important part of the plot. The whole reason the story exists. Yet you know nothing about them. Maybe that was the way the author wanted it, but for me it didn’t work.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

"They were both self-sacrificing idiots who should have done this a year ago and she was not waiting one second longer. If she couldn't be with him now then she never would, and the very thought was unthinkable."

Conspirator is the sequel to Counterpart and continues the story of Leda, the Counterpart to Azaria, a royal-blooded child and one of the heirs to the throne. Leda has now left the palace and is living in Saint-Trevale where two of her siblings find her after a series of natural disasters and murders throughout the Five Kingdoms and beg her to come back to the palace to help solve the mystery of why these things are happening.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sequel, especially the growth of the siblings' relationships with each other. They go from hating each other and wanting to kill one other to being willing to do anything to protect each other. Leda also goes through huge character growth throughout the novel, especially her relationship with Pyrrhus. Eber and Azaria continued to be two of my favorite cast members. Eber was super relatable while also developing the fantasy side of his character.

This book was thrilling, heartbreaking, and exciting however one aspect of this book that I did not enjoy was that sometimes Leda's internal monologue got a little bit repetitive to the point where the scenes with her got a little bit boring. Once you get halfway through the book, you know as the reader what her motivations are and don't need to continue to be reminded of it. I also got slightly annoyed with Pyrrhus, despite him being one of my favorite characters. I felt like he constantly made some stupid decisions and it took him the entire book for his eyes to open fully. I feel like this transition could have been made a bit earlier in the book.

Overall, I would give this book a strong 4 stars and I cannot wait to see how everything ends.

It's safe to say I still love this series and am so excited to see where the next installment goes. I love the MMC but I wish we would have seen more stolen moments for them. I understand why we didn't and the plot didn't lack with the "in-between" so I'll forgive the continued slow burn.

One remarkable thing about this sequel, for me, is I don't feel like it suffers from the dreaded sophomore slump. We see a fair amount of development from the FMC. Each character seems to have a purpose and a responsibility to the plot. The story isn't thin and doesn't make jumps to get to where it needs to go. It seems like a really solid, unique, and well thought out story.

The book does end on a cliffhanger but just like the first book, the story is fairly concluded so you don't feel frustrated and like the author just cut the plot in half to secure another book. No spoilers: there is a significant event that happens in the last few pages but I feel like if we never see a third book, the heroine will be okay. If that makes any sense.

I absolutely ate this book up and hope you enjoy it as much as I do

Amazing story I devoured immediately.
While book 2 of the Gemdark Series left me a little wanting compared to book one, I still found myself unable to put the story down until very late at night. Our love interest was steamy and honest and everything I could ask for, but it lost the danger and forbidden-ness that captivated me in Counterparts.
And my final gripe was with the ending. Not to give any spoilers, but how the "Bad Guy" came to be felt... almost out of place. And it left me wanting.
But as for the pros of this story, the mystery behind the assassinations, the gods and the curse, and the development between siblings and how unique the whole novel is are the true winners here. I highly highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy, but needs a breath of fresh air.
I received this book as an ARC and I am leaving this story voluntarily.

I'll be completely honest, I was a bit disappointed in this book. I really enjoyed Counterpart and I think I said something to the effect that you can tell this is a green writer but there was something there that I hoped would get expanded on and honed in better in the sequel. It didn't happen. A lot of those really nuanced and different relationships the characters all had with one another were completely left out. On the flip side lot of the issues I had with the first were made more apparent in Conspirator. The world set up is really interesting but instead we spend more than we need to of just longing after Pyrrus. They barely have a chance to spend time together but all we talk about is how amazing he is and how mad she is. Or we're reading petty fights between siblings acting like tweens.

I'm not sure if I'll read the next in the series. I'm interested enough in the world but I'm not sure I want to read more will-they-wont-they without much to justify it.

Second book in the Gemdark Dynasty series following Leda’s new free life away from court. Until Pyrrhus asks her to come back to the palace to help her remaining siblings. A terrible curse is uncovered and secrets and conspiracies twist and unravel.
This book was a roller coaster of emotions - passion, frustrations, horror and humour. Azaria is still my favourite character even though she is surely insane. The book finishes on a cliff hanger with lots of unanswered questions. Desperately need book 3 to see if some theories are correct.
Recommended for those who enjoy fantasy romance. Not as much gore in this one as book 1.

Received a complimentary copy of the book from BookSirens and provided a review voluntarily. But mainly because I would like book 3 prerelease! 😏

OH MY GODDD I LOVE THIS SERIES SO FUCKING MUCH!!!! IT DESERVES TIKTOK LEVEL OF FAME!!!!

Okay so I think I would give Conspirator more like a 4.75 or 4.5, but I STILL LOVED IT! Just not as much as Counterpart, but it was a very solid sequel that served as a good set up for the final book, which I am so excited for.

I really respect Pyne for delving into the lingering effects of such familial trauma, and a huge portion of this book was devoted to watching not only Leda try to heal and move on, but also seeing how the other children and court members were affected. Leda’s relationship with Eber especially was so heartbreaking, and I won’t say why, but it made so much sense.

I mean how DO people deal with the after effects of such violence and trauma, and so much grief that continues even into this story? It was very gut wrenching and I loved it.

Moving on, the looming threat of natural catastrophes caused by Gods was a really good conflict for this story, since we already dealt with a rebellion in the first book. This one focuses heavily on court politics, but since our pov is through Leda, it’s not too much or overly so.

Pyrrhus and Leda have my whole heart istg 😭🫶 I NEED THEM TO BE HAPPY TOGETHER PLEASE

Ok now the things I didn’t really like in this book:

1. It had a bit of “middle book syndrome” in that it was a little slow for my liking but again it’s understandable since it’s a “showing affects of trauma” story and it’s setting up for the third, but the plot dulled a few times.

2. I feel like Leda was way too unfair towards Pyrrhus, and it was understandable in the beginning, but eventually I got annoyed too. Like girl,,, he’s trying to keep the country together…

3. Also it felt like every time they finally would have a moment together and start a much needed conversation, they got interrupted 💀 and that was also extremely annoying bc it happened so many times.

4. Elina’s character direction was a bit disappointing for me ngl. I know she always was the zealous religious one in the family, but given her actions in Counterpart, I really thought she’d develop differently and keep her complexity.

5. A HUGE lack of Azaria screen time. I’m not that mad about this because the moments she DID get were pretty great and I can tell Pyne loves her a lot, but she felt quite underdeveloped and I am really hoping we get into her head more in the next one, or at least see more of her that’s not violent and power hungry. She’s without a doubt the most interesting character in this series. Also disappointed that we didn’t get more insight in her relationship with what’s his face (Ambrose’s brother).

6. My physical copy of the book had so many grammar mistakes and errors. And there was an instance where it said “Agon” but it was an entirely different character speaking. I will still continue to buy a physical copy of Conqueror because I love this series so much, but I wish it was edited better.

Anyways lastly I love Pyne’s writing and I think she does so excellent in portraying the dark side of the series and Leda’s character especially. Like there’s a moment we get a revelation about what will stop the God’s curses and Leda’s reaction is literally heart stopping and so full of despair I could feel from the page. Gave me HUGE vibes of the first book again and I loved it.

3-3,5

Book 1 was better, but this is still ok. I got what I wanted, there are some parallels between the fictional world and real world, but the relationships that were so well done in book 1 aren't so well developed here. Leda avoids confrontations in the worst possible way, the reason for her to come back is not that strong, and I love a plot twist, however, the two plot twists here make sense in theory, the execution didn't convince me. I saw that book 3 has a low rating score, but the cliffhanger in the end of this is making me read it, otherwise I would say read only book 1 if you haven't started this series yet. The ending is open, but satisfactory. The author can write, her storytelling is good, I definitely will read other books by Pyne, but I wish she constructed the twists in a better way. I'll explain better, but with spoilers:

Ok, there are other things I liked, such as the religious aspect of the world, and seeing other nationalities. The writing, as in worldbuilding is very freshened out, and the author expands it from book 1 (there are some anachronisms, like adrenaline and IQ, but as this is a self published book, it can be fixed). Leda and Pyrrhus is still a good love story to follow, and because of all that I said I'll read book 3.

~ NEW REVIEW ~

A massive thank you goes to Book Sirens & Ella Pyne for letting me dive into Gemdark once again with Conspirator! Book two in a YA fantasy romance series, I’m going to be completely honest & say I wasn’t sure if the story could be improved upon after Counterpart. But now? Buckle up buttercups, because this second instalment is *even better* than what we read in book one!

A year has passed since the events in Counterpart, & Leda is loving her freedom, living in a small seaside town. Although the gods are wreaking havoc with terrible catastrophes across the Five Kingdoms, Leda is determined to never go back to the palace. But with the siblings she loves falling apart without her, is Leda truly free? Or will she have to go back to the place of her nightmares? A curse is hounding the footsteps of the Counterparts, & the king is a temptation Leda wishes she could forget… Will anyone be left standing by the end?

Ella likes to give us eccentric, complicated characters. And honestly, I think Leda’s sister Elina gives Azaria a run for her money in Conspirator! But at the very heart of this story is the love Leda has for her siblings. Even the ones who would kill her without hesitation (yes I’m looking at you, Azaria). And I don’t know why, but it’s comforting to read about this truly dysfunctional family & how they try to fit together again. Is it a redemption story? Probably not. But it has a lot of emotion (& even humour) packed into it...

Trust me, you'll want to read the FULL review on my blog for this beauty. And you can find that here: https://www.immersedinbooks.com/consp... 😍🥳

I feel a bit mean saying this, but I think Conspirator suffers somewhat from middle child syndrome. There are several threads picked up during the story that remain unresolved. But not in a 'wow, I can't wait to see what happens next' way but more of an 'okay? Is this going somewhere? I guess not' sort of way. And also unfortunately some of the elements that were a weakness are really doubled-down on here. The religion for one doesn't make much sense, and so the plot beats related to it end up just as confused. The politics are also not great, sometimes it's in the details, but sometimes big things, and the author doesn't really explore the alternatives to tell us why what they wrote is the most reasonable choice.

That's not to say that there's nothing good. It's a good read with fun characters and interesting and tangled character dynamics. I think they really carry the book, because while I was reading I didn't really question these elements until I'd finished and didn't have the characters to focus on.

I read the first book in the Gemdark Dynasty as an arc, and loved it. I rated it 5 stars, but I did read it really early in my "getting back into reading" period, so I was curious how I was going to feel about this book.

It took me a little while to get back into the story since it's been a while, and I think this installment does have a bit of a slow start. The story starts off with Leda living her life away from the palace, and I thought the reasoning for making her come back was maybe not the most logical. But once I got deeper into the story, I was really enjoying myself. We get to see a lot more of Leda's siblings, the royal children and the counterparts, and they all have unique and entertaining personalities. This book is full of sibling banter, which I found both nostalgic and amusing. I spent half of my time rooting for Azaria, and the other half hating her, but she's still one of my favorites. I enjoyed the romance (fade to black) and the court politics and betrayals. This was a rare book where there are trials and the MC is not part of said trials/ has no potential or intention of gaining or having power. Leda actually detests power, she is a main character whose only aspiration is survival and has no "chosen one" trope things going on which is kinda refreshing.

Aside from a few plot related/ logic components that I think could have stronger, I think this series is seriously underhyped. I didn't want to put my kindle down and finished it in 2 sittings.

“The pain never goes away, Eber. You can mask it, until the mask becomes more toxic for you than what you're covering with it.”

When a second book elicits almost as much enjoyment as the first, I know I am in for a treat of a series. It took me longer to read this one but it’s hard for me to compare, as I devoured the first. The chemistry between the characters, especially romantically, is as strong as it was before and I never felt like it was a flame that died down or burned out. Which, to me, is a sign of characters written very well. Leda continues to be the badass I knew she would be and it was no different this time around. I also thought the world building and politics was strong. For some reason I didn’t love this cliffhanger as much as I loved what the first book ended on but that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it or that I’m not desperate to read the next one. Even though this took me longer and I would probably still choose the first book as my favorite this series is all around still just incredible. I have loved every minute spent with Leda and as a reader, I don’t feel like there’s lag between books or a significant decrease in quality, which makes me so happy and excited to read on. Too often I will read fantasy series where the second book feels less meaty than the first on a character dynamic or world building level, but this continued to feel fleshed out and equally cared for, so I have high hopes for the third book.

Oh my God, what the hell? Book three! Now! Need!

Leda is now independent and finding her happiness away from all she’d ever known. Unfortunately, the Five Kingdoms are being overwhelmed by destruction and disaster, and her only choice is to return to the life she thought she’d escaped. As soon as she steps over the threshold, Leda is surrounded by intrigue, politics and of course, there is Pyrrhus. Danger continues to follow her at every turn, and it is all she can do to stay alive as everything around threatens to collapse on top of her.

This was such a great read! I’m not often a fan of ‘second books’ – they often feel just like filler material until the third – but Conspirator kept the momentum going from the first book. Action was consistent and when there wasn’t, readers got little tastes of the slow burn romance between Leda and Pyrrhus (love this man!). I particularly enjoyed how the characters continued to develop through this second book and we begin to see how Leda’s family could really be if they didn’t have the ‘curse of the Counterpart’ to deal with. All in all, a fantastic read and am very, very excited for the next book in the series!

Thank you BookSirens and Ella Pyne for my copy! I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts an opinions are my own.

This book wrecked me in the best way. I don't even know how to summarize all the feelings I am currently having, but I'll try.

First of all, that ending was criminal. I am pacing and furiously googling about a release date for the third installment and finding nothing finite. It's unfair and cruel and I loved it.

Seeing the change that comes over Leda through the progression of this series so far is perhaps my favorite part of The Gemdark Dynasty books. We learn so much about her through her relationship building, particularly throughout this book as she learns more about her siblings and Pyrrhus. She has easily become one of my favorite main characters in a novel. Leda reminds me a bit of Luisa from Encanto as she tries to carry the family forward. She does her best, but is not without her flaws and fumbles.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is:
"The pain never goes away, Eber. You can mask it, until the mask becomes more toxic for you than what you're covering with it."

This is what I will be doing until I get my hands on the finale: masking the pain of not knowing what comes next. I'm hopeful I won't get to the toxicity point before it releases...

As always, I am very thankful for the opportunity to read up-and-coming authors and their work. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I didn't enjoy this as much as the first book. Part of what I liked about the first book was the relationships between the characters/siblings. I was actually pulling for Azaria. She is unhinged, but you can tell that she cares for Leda in her own psychotic way. This is why I found the ending of this book a bit disappointing.

I also love a push and pull element when it comes to a romance, but for me, it was a bit too repetitive in this book and bordered on annoying.

There are lots of weird choices from the characters as well, and apparently, the worst guards known to man are employed there. Letting a 10-year-old just go missing when someone is trying to kill them. Also, someone is trying to kill us, let's go on an adventure by ourselves across the land and then the king will come... also without guards. Someone is trying to kill us, and we've taken a trip without guards, so now is the time to be all over each other in the woods while we are the ones who are supposed to be on watch while everyone sleeps.

It also seemed like everything was just happening to Leda rather than her choices affecting any of the outcomes.

Despite some of the elements described above, I still enjoyed the pacing of the book. I liked Leda's character development (in that she has started to find her voice). I will definitely read the next book to see how it all plays out.

To say that I loved this book would be an understatement. Ella Pyne has written yet another masterpiece in The Gemdark Dynasty series. I couldn't get enough of Counterpart, so when the opportunity to read Conspirator came up, I jumped at the chance. This book put me through an emotional rollercoaster: I was frustrated, angry, happy, sad (to the point where I cried a couple of times), and I would do it all again—will do it all again as soon as book 3 is written.

Leda is such an amazing character, and I really loved getting to know her siblings better. The dynamics between all the characters are well-constructed, and the characters are wonderfully developed. Since I got to know the characters on such a deep level, I was very invested in their development throughout the story. It was really neat to see how they changed, and it was even better when I felt like I was a part of their interactions, chuckling alongside them or wincing at their insults. I was so invested in the outcome of the book, and when the plot twists kept coming, I kept reading faster and faster. The cliffhanger at the end has left me desperate for more, and I can't wait to find out what happens next.

Note: I received Conspirator as an advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.

I have devoured this with the same voraciousness as the first installment. It has not disappointed!

At the end of the first book, I didn't begrudge Leda for running away. The palace and everything in it represented nothing but pain. Leaving was the only option for Leda to finally be free - to finally be her own person, in a place no one would look at her as simply a Counterpart that lived. The ending of the first novel left me saddened but hopeful for Leda.

Pyne doesn't shy away from causing havoc, inflicting pain with every action from every character. Each have their own abuses and traumas to deal with. Each have their own motivation; this truly becomes apparent towards the last few chapters. And I just know the gods have plans for Leda; the subtle hints throughout are like an itch that I can't quite scratch.

I find it truly impressive how much I can love and hate the characters Pyne has brought to life. They are complex, and broken, with no easy way out of the situations they find themselves in. I truly hope this series gets as much attention as it deserves! I cannot wait for the third installment!

Oh boy, can I rate this 10⭐️?
This second book in the Gemdark Dynasty series was a real rollercoaster of emotions, even more than book 1! It had passion, some wicked humor, disgust and even a little horror!
I really love the MMC and FMC. Leda’s character has developed in a fair way. I love Pyrrhus and his way of handling things. The way he tries to protect Leda is so sweet, a real chef’s kiss!
Every other characters has its own purpose and influence on the plot. If I have to pick a fav character beside Leda and Pyrrhus, it’s Eber. I think we have not seen all of what he’s capable of doing and that he will play a big part in the upcoming book.
The plot had me shocked, because. I. Did. Not. See. That. Coming. Oh my god, it was so well-written and so well executed. The plot isn’t at random, but the story builds up nicely.
I have some theories on what direction Ella Pyne wants to go with the story. So I better get book 3 ASAP to see if I’m plunging in the right direction. Can’t wait to read how everything will turn out.
I will definitly recommend this series!

I’m an Azaria stan and this book did her dirty.

The second installment of this series didn’t have nearly as much muster as the first. The foundations of their quest and the circumstances of the trails felt like forced peril for the sake of distraction, and the plot teetered between too many ambitious goals.

My head hurts. Although I breezed through it, the writing wasn’t as witty as the first and felt rushed in places. Lots of repetitive phrases and I was surprised by the lack of tension— it was lost in tantrums and bland banter. Imm disappointed it fell short of the first.

That being said, that ending made me angry enough to want the next— best believe I’ll be on the look out for more. Although the foundation is there, the conclusion and, thusly, the development certainly isn’t what I /wanted/ from the remaining children. And the main issue is resolved, I’m not sure what else to expect anymore.

“Anyone else would have been mortally offended and demanding Leda apologise for the accusation that very moment. Not Azaria.”

This book picks off straight from book one and dives straight back into the frightful life of what it must be to be a counterpart.
The world-building isn't as great as the first book, but if you remember the first one, it doesn't need to be; you get glimpses of new places, but the focus is definitely on the castle and its inhabitants.
The character development, though, is great! I didn't think they could get better, but they do. You see sides of each of them that have you thinking WTH or OMG or even feeling sorry for them.
I do which that you got to see some things from different POVs as the world seems a bit slanted when your looking through the eyes of the MC where she thinks she is the only one dealing with something.

Not to be dramatic but— CONSPIRATOR HAS UTTERLY GUTTED ME. I am slain, entirely. HOW DARE THESE BOOKS BE SO GOOD?!

I need the third book yesterday—how am I meant to go on?! UGH. So, obviously, I highly recommend these books, and envy each and every one of y’all who gets to read this series for the first time because I wish I could erase my memory and do it all over again with fresh eyes.

The pain that this sequel’s ending brought me was exquisite—I live for a deliciously evil cliffhanger and you can catch me in a hungover heap for an indeterminate number of days as I wait for the next book…and yes I realize this review is incoherent and melodramatic but I am barely functioning in the aftermath of shock LEAVE ME ALONE.

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review! All thoughts and opinions expressed above are entirely my own.

I love this series!

Leda continues being a strong, smart and admirable force as the one member of her family who is actually sane. This book had me on the edge of my seat and as much as I thought she would finally get her HEA, the ending tore me apart.

Pyrhuss was especially swoonworthy in this story and there was undeniably strong chemistry between him and Leda. They feel like soulmates.

Leda's siblings seem to be following in the footsteps of her father and I'm excited to see where the next book takes me!
