Rate this book
Lesbian fiction’s funniest odd couple is back, investigating tall tales, extinct creatures, and a crumbling house filled with secrets, in this offbeat Australian romantic mystery.

While holidaying in Tasmania, they receive a call for help that leads them to a creepy, old house in the wilderness. There, they meet a mysterious woman from Margaret’s past, who warns she’s being stalked and something terrible is coming.

What’s going on? What secrets lie within Crossroads House? And why on earth are there hidden cameras around the grounds, recording everything that happens?

Unexplained incidents turn sinister, endangering Bess and Margaret—and their trust in one another. But they don’t give up easily…

Partners in life, Bess Campbell and Margaret Gale are on a much needed vacation in Tasmania. Margaret has recently lost her sister to cancer and is under the stress of executing her estate. Along with this, Margaret has lost her job as an auction house appraiser. Bess is working in a museum clerical position where she is both under appreciated and unhappy. A surprise phone call from an old university acquaintance has Margaret agreeing to appraise her grandmother’s antiques. After the grandmother suffers a mysterious death Margaret and Bess are loath to leave until it is solved.

Bess Campbell is one of my favourite light hearted characters. Her inherent quirkiness added to Bess’ commitment of doing no harm is endlessly endearing. The love and understanding she has for Margaret’s ice queen personality is heartwarming.

Lea surrounds the main storyline with side stories which are amusing and eclectic. And at the end she brilliantly pulls all the threads together to satisfy even the pickiest of murder mystery fans.

If you love murder mysteries and odd ball characters then this mystery is for you.

This was a DNF for me. I read A Curious Woman right before starting this and it was too much quirkiness for me. I couldn’t relate to either character very well, especially Bess, her hippie vibe, was too much for me. I liked Margaret better, but her anger and aloofness also bothered me.

I know others liked this couple and their zany detective skills. Read other reviews and decide if this is your vibe.

We reconnect with loveable and prickly leads Bess and Margaret (from A Curious Woman) trying to enjoy a holiday in Tasmania.
Well, so much for a holiday - they are soon involved in trying to solve a mysterious death.
The author's lead characters pulled me along but I felt for Margaret. Not written as a warm person but you need steadfast and cool - she's your woman. Bess needed a shake or two - just too odd and laid back at times for me.
This unlikely duo and mysterious events coupled with kookiness, angst and questionable characters add up to a fun read from Jess Lea.

Quirky cozy mystery set in Tasmania
What a treat: A cozy mystery set in Tasmania (still on my bucket list, sigh), featuring the quirkiest of quirky characters with a side-dish of sapphic story-line.
A really, really loved how Jess Lea brings to us the parochial, rural side of Tasmania. I loved her descriptions of the bush, the near abandoned house, the large pinch of Australian history, the wildlife (I keep my fingers crossed for the Tasmanian tiger), the close knit community, the drafty cold - last stop before Antartica. I felt transported to the setting and immensely enjoyed it. Add to that the unabashed Australian-English (and some Latin fittingly used by one of those quirky characters) and I am a very happy camper indeed.
As a cozy mystery set in a rural area the story lives from the setting, the main and secondary characters as well as some secondary storylines. There is nothing fast paced, Jess Lea takes her time to unfold the story and lovingly polishes the nooks and crannies - at times quite literally. It is a story to savour which lingers in your mind once you put the book down.
Bess and Margaret, quirky heroines and amateur sleuths, are as unlikely a couple as ever. Bess, the easy-going hippie embracing the world, and Margeret, stark, socially unadapted and no-nonsense. It is interesting to see how the situations challenges them and their relationship. I love how they defy many a preset notion of a sapphic relationship. But what else have we come to expect from Jess Lea‘s brilliant writing?

And no worries: if you haven‘t read the A Curious Woman where Bess and Margaret met, A Curious Visit can be perfectly read as a stand-alone or you‘ll have the pleasure to read two cozy mysteries.

Thanks to Ylva for the ARC. The review is left voluntarily.

Oh, I really liked this book. In fact, I dare say perhaps even more than the first one! And this is coming from someone who generally doesn't seek out mysteries.

It has been a bit since I experienced the uniquely wonderful Margaret Gale character from A Curious Woman and now that the relationship has been established between her and Bess Campbell, they can get down to settling into their new routine as a couple. Off they go for a much-needed Tasmanian getaway to relax, unwind and ultimately find a place to scatter Margaret's sister's ashes when their vacation gets waylaid by an old friend who needs Margaret's help. While the assistance requested seems relatively straightforward at first, they soon realize all is not what it seems and they are both embroiled in related mysteries to solve!  As events unfold, the circumstances will intrigue and test them in equal measure.

If you're a fan of the first book, I predict you'll love this one as well. And while this can be read as a stand-alone, I do suggest you read it to learn about their history and better appreciate the references to past adventures. I am completely enamored with their love for one another. Though they're polar opposites and quirky in completely different ways, they're perfectly matched.

I certainly recommend this one!

I was so excited to receive a sequel to A Curious Woman and jumped right into the story. I was happy to be back with Bess Campbell and Margaret Gale. It is two years after their first mystery and they are taking a holiday in Tasmania. The dry wit writing and opposite personality types are delightfully still there. While on holiday ice queen Margaret stops in to visit Vivienne, a woman who helped her on the night of their college graduation. Vivienne is caring for her grandmother in an old mansion full of antiques and artifacts. She asks Margaret to help appraise the collection. Free spirit Bess on the other hand gets caught up with people hoping to spot the assumed extinct Tasmanian tiger. When the grandmother ends up dead under suspicious circumstances the duo turn on their sleuthing skills. I love Margaret and Bess and their personalities. I will absolutely look for future cozy mysteries with them. I also love the setting of Tasmania and the great descriptions. Thank you to NetGalley and Ylva Publishing for the sample ARC and I’m leaving a voluntary review. I previously (March 2023) left a review for the first few chapters as my ARC incomplete. I appreciate the publisher taking time to reach out and fix the issue so I could read the complete book.

4.75 stars - This is a sequel that is as quirky as the first one but features a plot that seems to have a much tighter grip on me than reasonable. Like I had to be up at 8 AM today but because of this book, I literally stayed up until 5:45 AM. So yeah, I feel more than woozy right now but damn is it worth it!

This book—in terms of quirkiness, humor, and mystery—is as well-written and as amazing as Book 1, A Curious Woman. But I think what makes this even more riveting and affecting is its focus on the relationship between Margaret and Bess, as well as their individuality and vulnerability in equal measure while other bizarre yet still fascinating chain of events are taking place; that's really what grabbed me from the very first page up to the last word of the story. I could not stop reading!

And I really can't recommend this enough. This better not be the last in this freaking awesome series, because I so look forward to reading more adventures and murders under the gum trees with Margaret Gale and Bess Campbell 😊

TLDR: A couple (F/F) investigates a mystery in a small town and their commitment to adventure makes this a must-read.

A Curious Visit is an atmospheric dual-point-of-view mystery with a light sprinkle of sapphic romance. The story begins with Margaret receiving a call from a former acquaintance asking for help. It seems Vivienne needs to have her grandmother's antiques appraised. So, Margaret and Bess take a detour from their vacation in Tasmania to the small town of Mount Bastion. Upon their arrival, a sense of foreboding overtakes them. The town is a handful of run-down businesses, suspicious residents, and murmurs of cryptid activity. Vivienne's home is the “haunted” Crossroads House, a dilapidated manor full of valuable antiques. Vivienne believes someone is stealing items from the house. It’s up to Bess and Margaret to figure out who is taking them and why.

To begin, the author provides adequate context for events that occurred in the first book. So, reading A Curious Woman isn’t necessary. I do *want* to read it because I enjoyed this experience. A Curious Visit will appeal to readers who enjoy gothic horror. It’s a slow-burn mystery that focuses on minute details to escalate tension. For example, every time Bess and Margaret visit Crossroads House a new detail emerges about its health. The paint is peeling. The ceiling is leaking. Cobwebs hang over most surfaces. Boards creak over breaks in the windows. Weeds are overgrown. I imagine a whisper would send the beast toppling to the ground.

While I love the imagery of the text, I’m also a converted fan of the characters. I’ll admit my hesitancy. Bess is so unlike me! She is warm, eccentric, and propelled by her sense of adventure. My sense of adventure is reading a new book in the same genre with a different subgenre. So, I’ll admit relief when Margaret entered the scene. She is cold, terse, and frets over organization and germs. Their relationship is like the one I have been in for a decade, and I relate to the difficulty of two stubborn people butting heads. I'm sure my partner agrees. With regard to themes, Bess and Margaret are exploring what it means to adapt as life changes. They’re testing the limits of their commitment.

As for tone, sarcasm is employed throughout. It is my favorite love language. It keeps things spicy and funny. “Margaret opened her laptop, took out her disinfectant wipes, and began cleaning the keyboard. ‘Anyone who thinks that animal is still around must be –’ ‘– a very special type of person,’ Bess finished, although she doubted those would have been Margaret’s words.” The tone of Lea’s work is humorous and eerie. It’s a dichotomy I adore. Nothing is ever hopeless, but obstacles interfere to permit growth. The ending was as Scooby Doo as I hoped it would be. The reveal was not especially surprising, but I am naturally suspicious of everyone. I am sure mystery readers will also spot the clue.

In the way of constructive criticism, I would prefer to see Latin used less. Using it more than three times for character affectation is excessive. I located one typo – hardly reason to call in the National Guard. While my criticisms of this book are few, I caution those who need books to maintain a frenetic pace. I *love* a slow, thoughtful examination of characters and facts. There are five suspects and each has a motive and opportunity for the events which unfold. Exploring those threads is delicate and slow work. I appreciate a good red herring, and this book has a veritable buffet of them.

So, do I recommend A Curious Visit? Yes. In fact, I am excited for my partner to read it because she obsesses over the cozy mystery genre. I’ve no doubt she will identify with Bess and that certain quotes will ricochet to me as ammunition. Ha. I look forward to it. This is a satisfying read with excellent motif work that creates a spooky atmosphere. I wish more books in the sapphic romance genre used scenes to the same effect.

I loved A Curious Woman, Lea’s first book about Margaret and Bess in the Murder Under the Gum Trees series. I enjoyed the gentle, quirky humour; the unlikely romance; the murder mystery; and the recognisable Australian landscape painted so eloquently in Lea’s delicious prose. So, I was looking forward to reading this next instalment, A Curious Visit, but I was also slightly worried that Lea wouldn’t be able to pull off the magic twice. Would I be less interested in Bess and Margaret now that they are a couple? Would the mystery be as good?

I should have had more faith. A Curious Visit is, if anything, even better than the first book. It’s set in Tasmania which is a very different landscape to Victoria and lends itself to the lovely subplot of the search for the (probably) extinct thylacine – the Tasmanian tiger.

The mystery is well plotted and left me guessing until the reveal. This is, sadly, a pretty rare event in literary mysteries, so I was thrilled to be taken along on this ride. The mystery is linked to a woman that Margaret met only once for a night after her University final exams, but who had a disproportional influence on her life. We got to know Bess very well in A Curious Woman, which wasn’t difficult because she’s such an open book. Margaret is an ice queen, however. Aloof and intimidating, caring little for social niceties – harder to get to know. In A Curious Visit we get to see behind Margaret’s façade and learn to understand her. Some powerfully subtle writing from Lea to achieve this makes for a lovely read and moved me through irritation, sympathy, respect, awe and fondness for Margaret’s character.

As I expected, the book contains a wonderful cast of secondary characters presented in Lea’s trademark quirkily humorous way. I enjoyed every page and every aspect of this book and I was disappointed when the story concluded. I really hope that Lea writes more books in this series (maybe a book set in each Australian State and Territory?) because I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

Note: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher, but I’m voluntarily leaving my honest review.

Book 2 of my favourite Australia age gap, I’ve queen, whodunnit novel. At this stage the story fast forwards to 2 years after their initial meeting and explores their life as the couple navigates their relationship.

I find The Curious series really endearing because of the main character’s clashing personalities and outlook in life. The author laid the foundation for this couple to have very entertaining, witty and charming back and forth conversations.

Unlike book 1, book 2 delves deeper into how they handle being in a relationship. My favourite couple tackle doubts, insecurities and misgivings while trying to stay afloat in their relationship. Of course, it won’t be right without the ever present subplot of mystery and this time it involves a part of Margaret’s past that she thought she forgot but now has come out of hibernation after 25 years.

Brilliant!

Margaret and Bess are in Tasmania taking a well earned break, when Margaret receives a call from an old acquaintance requesting her help. While trying to help, they find themselves embroiled in quite the adventure and mystery surrounding a creepy old house.

It was so great to be back investigating and solving mysterious events with the curious duo that is Margaret and Bess! There was never a dull moment, tons of red herrings, and a lot of odd goings on to keep us all guessing what might happen, what secrets might be uncovered, and what was really going on. This adventure was so much more than just finding themselves in a situation. Bess and Margaret found this such a different experience and it really tested the strength of their relationships.

I already adored Margaret from A Curious Woman but in this story she really showed how being with Bess was making her grow as a person, without having to change who she was at all. Bess, as always, was totally infectious and off exploring and getting herself involved here, there and everywhere, sometimes leaving Margaret on edge but it all added to the building up of their amazing relationship. Throughout the story I was coming up with all sorts of weird and wonderful outcomes that'd explain everything but I was not prepared for what actually happened. It was so exciting to keep guessing and to have such surprises.

Couldn't put this down. Was totally addicted and can't recommend it enough. Hopefully there will be more Margaret and Bess stories because they're always so much fun and totally great.

A Curious Visit follows on from Book 1 in the Murder Under the Gum Trees series, and Jess Lea has delivered a delightfully funny, suspenseful romance with two characters who couldn’t be more different from each other but still fit perfectly together.

Margaret and Bess are taking a holiday in Tasmania, with Bess eager to experience everything and Margaret tagging along somewhat reluctantly. When Margaret is asked by an old acquaintance to look into some antiques, she jumps at the opportunity, much to the dismay of Bess.

Once they arrive at Crossroads House, a decrepit estate in a small town with locals who are very guarded, both women are drawn into their own mysteries. Bess is determined to infiltrate a group of women hunting down a thought to be an extinct animal, and Margaret is trying to uncover the truth behind the death of the lady of the house.
A Curious Visit is a page turner that is filled with humour, intrigue, jealousy, and romance. The entire story is fast-paced, as we jump from one little mystery to another, with it all coming together in the end.

Eccentric Bess and ice-queen Margaret are strong, memorable characters and may not appeal to all, but their uniqueness is exactly what makes them so compelling. I can’t wait to see what they do next.

I didn't read the previous book, but it isn't necessary to follow and understand the story. All relevant info are given.
Bess and Margaret are opposite characters. While Bess is outgoing and a wanting to create harmony, Margaret is introvert and rather abrasive. They love each other, but still have to work on their relationship, especially to trust.
On their trip through Tasmania they land in a little town that has seen better days. And while evaluating the possessions of an old lady they have to fight against mistrust and nefarious motives of the locals.

The cast is rather quirky and the story flows at a good pace. The plot is not too deeply hidden, and the mystery's solution is not that surprising. But the author concentrates more on the thoughts and feelings of Bess and Margaret. There is some angst, but not much.

It may not be for everyone, but I found the book entertaining.

I read the first book in the series but will confess to not remembering much of the plot. Some crumbs have been dropped at the start of this but not enough to really bring it back. However there are some cracking lines and the plot presumably will be the mystery leading rather than romance, although I am sure the two mains will have a bumpy ride…… no make up without breakup!
As the book goes on I'm feeling like I should know this couple but can't really remember and I think that is not helping me settle in to the story.
This is an odd book, as it is the second in a series, it doesn’t have the meeting ritual. I also don’t feel it established the established relationship that well so I struggled with the romance side. The problem is until well into the book, there isn’t really any other side. The last bit held my interest tho and there was a happy ending.

A sequel to A Curious Woman. Bess and Margaret are back! An unlikely couple that seems to work. They have been together for 2 years now. Margaret lost her job and is currently unemployed. She also lost her sister to cancer. Bess is stuck in an unfulfilling job. The two are taking a holiday in Tasmania and whilst they were there, Margaret’s old university acquaintance reached out for help and that was the beginning of the mystery.

Lighthearted and occasionally humorous. Bess and Margaret are really an oddball couple who are polar opposites. But there are sweet moments nonetheless. It was nice reading their story again, how they navigate now being in a relationship. Bess also had the opportunity to design a new exhibition and some of the story arc was about wanting to exhibit an extinct animal and she was seen chasing down the people who could help her. The main bulk of the story was the mystery about an old house and it’s occupants, and discovering the secrets within the little town and the people involved. The mystery does keep you guessing and it was the main thing that kept me engaged.

It was an ok, easy read overall. If you liked the first book, you may like the second as well.

"A Curious Visit" by Jess Lea is an enchanting and thought-provoking novel that takes readers on a mesmerizing journey of self-discovery, wonder, and unexpected connections. From the first page, Lea’s lyrical prose pulls you into a world that is both magical and grounded in human experience, offering a delightful blend of curiosity and insight.

The story follows a protagonist whose life is turned upside down by a mysterious visit that leads them down a path of profound transformation. The beauty of this novel lies in how Lea seamlessly blends the fantastical with the deeply personal. It’s not just about the adventure or the external events, but about the internal changes the protagonist undergoes as they confront the unknown and, ultimately, themselves.

Lea’s writing is exquisite—rich with vivid descriptions that create an atmosphere full of wonder, yet deeply grounded in the emotions and thoughts of the characters. Her ability to capture the subtle nuances of human nature makes the story resonate on a much deeper level. Each chapter builds with anticipation, keeping readers engaged and eager to uncover the next twist in the plot.

What really sets "A Curious Visit" apart is its underlying themes of curiosity, openness to new experiences, and the importance of embracing change. The protagonist’s journey is not only one of physical exploration, but also of personal growth and understanding. Along the way, they encounter intriguing characters who add both humor and wisdom, enriching the narrative and offering new perspectives on life.

At its heart, "A Curious Visit" is a celebration of life's mysteries and the serendipitous encounters that shape our paths. It’s a story that will make you reflect on your own experiences, while inspiring a sense of wonder about the world around you.

If you're looking for a beautifully crafted novel that offers both adventure and introspection, "A Curious Visit" is a must-read. Jess Lea has created a literary gem that will captivate readers and leave them with a renewed sense of curiosity and appreciation for the unexpected journeys life has to offer.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and writing my review voluntarily.

What an absolute gem—this cozy mystery set in the wild, rugged beauty of Tasmania is both a transportive journey and a deeply charming read. Jess Lea gives us not just a mystery, but a lovingly detailed slice of life from a place many of us still dream of visiting (myself included!). With “A Curious Visit,” she invites us into a small, windswept Tasmanian town full of eccentric locals, drafty heritage homes, elusive wildlife, and a rich thread of sapphic tenderness woven through it all.

The atmosphere is stunning. Lea’s descriptions of the bush, the crumbling house on the hill, the ghostly hints of Australian colonial history, and the tight-knit, occasionally claustrophobic community—it all comes alive on the page. You can feel the cold creeping in from the Antarctic winds, smell the eucalyptus, and almost hear the rustle of a creature that might just be a Tasmanian tiger.

The language sparkles with its unapologetically Australian-English flavor, punctuated by the occasional Latin phrase from one of the more eccentric characters, just one of many delightful details that make this book feel utterly grounded and alive.

This isn’t a high-octane thriller, nor does it try to be. Lea takes her time, lingering in the quiet corners and letting the story slowly, satisfyingly unfold. It’s the kind of book that lets you exhale—where mystery lives not just in plot twists, but in the slow uncovering of relationships, secrets, and small-town rhythms.

Bess and Margaret - quirky, complex, and mismatched in the most endearing way—anchor the story with heart and humor. Bess, all free-spirited warmth, and Margaret, all sharp edges and social awkwardness, challenge each other as much as they grow together. Their relationship is refreshingly real and defies the tidy boxes sapphic love stories are often put into. And if you haven’t yet read A Curious Woman, worry not, 'A Curious Visit' stands firmly on its own. But if you're like me, you’ll find yourself reaching back to read the first one too, just to spend more time in this strange, lovely world Jess Lea has so beautifully created.

The anticipation for this book was off the charts. I couldn’t help but wonder what happened to our beloved Bess Campbell and her ice queen Margaret Gale. And what kind of adventure would they encounter, because certainly, what could go wrong on vacation?

First, you really must read A Curious Woman to appreciate the complexities surrounding an established couple moving forward beyond the HEA. And so here we are, the happy couple are, vacationing in Tasmania? There is the updated news of where Bess and Margaret are as a couple, and what’s happening in their respective careers, etc. We find out that Margaret is dealing with drama following her sister’s death and Bess does not know quite what to do to help her. But the game is afoot when Margaret’s old friend from a graduation event rings her up and asks for her help. Given her current job situation, it’s right up her alley, though it does seem an odd situation and it doesn’t take long to see that nothing is really what it seems.

What really resonated was an even deeper dive into the thoughts and feelings of Bess and Margaret as they confront different issues including dealing with grief/loss, guilt, jealousy, and more. Neither of them are acting like their “normal” selves. The environment they find themselves in is a fantastic means for seeing them deal with adversity, wrestle with old feelings while encountering new ones, and basically testing their strength as individuals and as a couple. Per usual, secondary characters are well done, and have their own little quirks and whatnot to keep everyone on their toes. But what really brings it all home is Jess Lea’s razor sharp wit- as in cut you with a polished antique sword wit.

Highly recommend it and hope I don’t have to wait too long for the next Jess Lea book.

This was an entertaining sequel to A Curious Woman. It’s a cozy mystery that’s more quirky than cozy. It has also been referred to as a romance mystery, but if I may affectionately say so, it reminded me more of a combination of Lucy and Ethyl and Bride of Frankenstein. That’s because of all the bizarre things that continued to pop up involving new and intriguingly interesting characters, and the dilapidated old home known as Crosswords House, where strange happenings occurred.

For a glimpse of the main characters, Margaret Gale was tall and thin, with short dark hair slicked back. She dressed in all black, including black leather boots and matching gloves. In contrast, Bess was short, plump and wore cats-eye glasses, a jacket in psychedelic patterns, and a hand-knitted hat in the shape of an octopus with tentacles streaming down her back.

Margaret was summoned to Crosswords House by Vivienne Bolt, a friend she hadn’t seen in 25 years, to help determine the value her grandmother’s antiques.
Bess Campbell, Margaret’s partner, tagged along only to find herself involved in her own strange circumstances involving what could be a “crytozoologist” and others she referred to as the Tiger women searching for evidence of the Tasmanian Tiger, Australia’s version of Big Foot.

The book is filled with entertainment which also included an accidental death that may not have been an accident, stolen artifacts and unscrupulous local townspeople. You will have fun reading this charming story and trying to figure things out for yourself.

My thanks to Ylva Publishing for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

I loved the first book "A curious woman" and was very happy to see, there is a sequel to one of the best mystery books I've ever read. "A curious visit" takes Bess and Margaret to Tasmania. What was supposed to be a vacation turns into a mystery. An old acquaintance from Margaret's past calls her, asks her to help her with the antiques of her grandmother. Margaret agrees although she hadn't seen or heard from Vivianne for 25 years. But she owes her.
Bess is not too happy about Margaret helping Vivienne, mostly because she has the feeling, Vivienne is interested in more than Margaret's expertise in antiques. While leaving her girlfriend to look at old treasures, she wanders off into the Tasmanian wilderness and ends up meeting three women, who are looking for a Tasmanian tiger.
As if this wasn't weird enough, the house where Vivianne with her grandmother live, is supposed to be haunted and then the grandmother dies. Apparently she fell down the stairs. Did she? Or was she pushed? Things have vanished out of the house, people in the small village seemed unwilling to talk to Bess and Margaret and the few who do, seemed to have a strange interest in the house.
After they were kicked out of the motel, Bess and Margaret have no other choice than staying in the haunted house. And due to a fight, that makes both worry if their relationship is as strong as they thought it was, their ways separate.
While I was reading the book, I was trying to figure out, who (what) was after all these curious things, that happened. If you like to investigate while reading, you will love this book.

Margaret Gale and Bess Campbell had the most emotional chaos ever. I loved that I could still recognise the behaviourism of both characters even after reading book 1 in 2019. The emotional development on Margaret's character is very intriguing because in book 1, she was intense. Bess seemed a little different too but that was stated in the book and given the circumstances, it was very understandable.

𝗦𝗟𝗘𝗨𝗧𝗛: I enjoyed the detective part in this book. It was a little straining to understand and get into but when the good parts started, well, that was just fun. Yes, the circumstances around the detecting part were rough but I was saddened when Bess didn't tag along with Margaret on the major parts. Mainly because, I didn't understand what she was doing with those forest-people. That near-ending was well-coordinated. I loved it.

𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗦𝗧: I love angst and angst that comes in form of tantrums is like my ultimate favourite and there was tons of it here. It was really adorable but when it got intense at the near-end, that wasn't so cute because the situation was getting dangerous.

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲: I enjoyed this one as well as the first one. I missed the chickens from book 1. 𝙋𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙧: Were Viviane and Antoinette identical twins? or just sisters? I missed that part.

More shenanigans with an unconventional couple
If you've read A Curious Woman and are already familiar with main characters Bess and Margaret, this is more shenanigans, adventure and mystery with the odd couple. This is a sequel but it could be read on its own as the mystery and other happenings are not carry overs from the previous book. I liked this book more than its predecessor and am not sure if it's due to familiarity with the characters or if my mindset and mood were more conducive to them this time around. Bess and Margaret are unconventional individuals and together make for an unusual mix but they provide lots of hilarity while getting involved in some very strange stuff. Set in Tasmania this time with its penal colony past it's a good reading option if you're wanting something different from typical lesfic. The mystery is only one plot thread in the book along with the romance and drama. I guessed a few of the reveals ahead of time but was surprised by the end of the book when all the mysteries were solved. I had fun reading this one and recommend it for those looking for some variety in their lesfic reading, outside of the norm when it comes to the characters, where they spent their time, and what they get up to.
I received an advance reading copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I don’t really like how Lea portrays the two main characters in the beginning of the story because Bess feels too stereotyped. It’s probably to show how she and Margaret are such complete opposites. After getting past the reintroduction to the characters – this is the second book about these women – the plot took over. There is a mystery to be solved. Margaret’s old acquaintance of one night at graduation decades ago called to ask for her help. She believes she owes Vivienne so she and Bess use their vacation to visit Vivienne and help her out. The first chapters serves to (re)introduce both Bess and Margaret and their relationship, and begin their adventure n a small town with a spotty history. A lot of odd things happen and many of the local people have checkered pasts, making credible suspects. Lea knows how to craft a mystery! I did not expect some of the twists. It kept me guessing all the way to the final clues.

I love this couple - Margaret and Bess.
The book starts with them in Tasmania on holiday touring a women's penitentiary. Margaret is very pale and always dresses in black. Bess had to explain to others on their tour that Margaret was not part of the tour, she wasn't an exhibit and she would not be having her photo taken with them.
While in Tasmania an old friend/acquaintance of Margaret's make contact asking for some help in valuing her grandmother's antiques. This kicks off their involvement in the death of the grandmother and all of the various shenanigans that surrounds it.
At times it tests their relationship but as always they not only solve the murder, but also bring to light several crimes that nobody had noticed.
It sees them battling through grief, jealousy, being taken prisoner, thrown out of a small town, and more!
There isn't an epilogue - they are not needed in series I think - the next book provides the updates.

I am looking forward to the next one!
