“God Talks” is anything but.

I’m frustrated by reading these books that would be almost comedically bad if it weren’t for the deception people are falling for. So why do I read stuff like this? Because people I love fall for it.

Another book for our “For Research Purposes Only” shelf. This should no way enter the realm of Christian books and is saturated in New Thought, Word of Faith, Prosperity Gospel nonsense (perhaps with a sprinkle of Bethel, Redding influence). I’ll return later for a more in-depth review.

The complete lack of scriptural citations alone should be cause for immediate concern and any Christian should immediately put it down (or, if you’re like me, finish with frustrated annotations in the margins).

Maybe I’ll come out with a book called “God Talks” and inside it says: “Go read your Bible.”

Excuse me while I go rinse my mind out with some actual scripture and maybe a dose of CS Lewis.

Okay, Ed is so like-able and I did enjoy this easy read. I do have a problem with the fact that he doesn’t talk about the need for repentance at all and leans heavily into how perfect everyone already is just as they are—but that isn’t what the Bible says. We are to put off our old selves and be conformed to the image of Christ. There is such a heavy emphasis on self discovery, we should fix our eyes on Jesus instead. I also found this to fall into prosperity gospel territory, which is not necessarily promised to every last one of us just because we are believers. The positive side is that he is inviting people of all walks to enter into communication with God in an approachable way, and that is wonderful.

I did not finish this book. These are not bad stories and I was moved by a few of them, but if you are a Christian, this is not the God of the Bible. No focus on Jesus, only self. God is not a genie. I do not recommend.

A Million Mistakes, But Still Loved

This exceptional work transcends the boundaries of conventional religious teachings and invites readers to explore a profound connection with the God.

Rush's book is an exhilarating mix of personal anecdotes, deep insights, and practical wisdom. His background in the marine corps adds a unique flavor to the narrative, allowing readers to glimpse the fascinating experiences that have shaped his perspective on life.
Furthermore, his unwavering commitment to improving politics and challenging the status quo is both inspiring and refreshing, making his voice a powerful catalyst for positive change.

One of the standout qualities of this book is Rush's ability to present a myriad of thought-provoking ideas to enhance our daily lives. From practical advice on personal growth to bold concepts that challenge conventional thinking, he offers a wealth of wisdom that encourages readers to break free from limitations and embrace a more fulfilling existence.
Through his words, he ignites a spark of inspiration within us, urging us to actively pursue a life of purpose and meaning.

The section on "God talks" is truly transformative.
The ideas presented in this section are so impactful that they have the potential to revolutionize one's approach to prayer and open up a world of profound connection with God.

Rush seems like an excellent dude too - with really fascinating stories about his work in the marine core.
He is also really focused on improving politics. He has a real drive to improve the political and governmental systems - he almost sounds like an anarchist at certain parts - and I thought it was really refreshing. I wish him best of luck in his new political party!

In conclusion, God Talks: How to Have a Friendship with God (Even if You’ve Made a Million Mistakes) is an exceptional book that pushes the boundaries of spirituality and personal growth.

Ed Rush's captivating storytelling, coupled with his deep insights and practical wisdom, make this book a true gem.

Don't miss the opportunity to delve into this transformative work and discover a profound friendship with God.

Oh my! It’s THAT good!

I started out really wanting to like this book. Then, at first, I’ll admit I began to think maybe it was not so great, too simplistic maybe, just too easy. And then it really grew on me as I kept reading. And I began to realize that its beauty is in its simplicity…God doesn’t make talking to Him complicated, we do that. I started trying God Talks (there are also companion audio guides included for free, but I haven’t accessed those yet, but I can’t wait to do so). Not to give away a spoiler, but near the end, when the author tells about visiting the “jail” where Jesus spent His last night before the crucifixion, and he asks Him, “What were You thinking about sitting here that night?” And here was the answer he received, “I was thinking about you.” (The collective you, all of us.) What a thought!

So, yeah, I wish I could give a 100-star review. But since I can’t, the 5-star and my comments will have to do.

Really enjoyed this book! I only heard Ed speak one time on YouTube, but it was so good that it caused me to take a chance on this book. I’m glad I did! It was actually great! Lots of super helpful, extremely practical suggestions and exercises to help strengthen your relationship with God. And after all, what’s better than that?! Great audiobook!

I got about 30% read and Jesus was never mentioned. This author thinks he’s a comedian and focuses on self discovery, not on what the Bible tells us who we are in Christ when we have trusted Him for our salvation. Feels like this ‘coach’ which he mentions a lot, is using God like a fairy godmother for profit.

I won this book through GoodReads First Read program.

I have never read a book like this. Rush has a very unique writing style. He writes like he is talking to you in a private conversation. I have always struggled with hearing God speak to me. I have at times struggled with payer. This book sets out a procedure for the reader to take to talk with God as a friend. This isn't a theory; this is a specific instruction that shows you how to converse with your creator, who loves you.

Keep at it and follow the instructions. It is easy to let your mind wander away from the goal of speaking to God. Rush sets out specific instructions for 7 days to follow. Rush even gives the reader a bonus section for more topics to talk with God about. I enjoyed the Q & A section.

I liked the message of this book. I personally have only tried once and got some very cryptic responses. This lead me to finish the book before deciding to attempt it again. I think the portion about having people to discuss this with is important and should have been mentioned earlier in the book. I plan to try this again and discuss what I hear or see. I know that we are not always answered when or how we expect. I have been communicating in different ways and hope to find this method useful once giving it another go. I was lucky enough to receive this book in a giveaway and took that as a message from God himself. So thankful for this as one of my resolutions this year has been to work on my relationship with God and what better tool?

Publication and Context

Title: God Talks: How to Have a Friendship with God
Author: Ed Rush
Publication Date: March 12, 2023
Publisher: God Talks, Inc. (Independently Published)
Page Count: 309 pages
Format: Kindle Edition (ASIN: B0BXFYHS6X)
Genres: Christian / Nonfiction / Spirituality / Religion / Self-Help
Target Audience: Christians seeking a more intimate prayer life, spiritual seekers, and faith-driven entrepreneurs or professionals looking to align their personal success with divine guidance.

Contextual Backdrop:
Published in the spring of 2023, God Talks occupies a highly popular and lucrative intersection in publishing: the space where Christian spirituality meets secular personal development. The endorsement from Brian Tracy—a globally recognized titan of the secular business and productivity world—alongside Rich Marshall, a Christian TV host, perfectly encapsulates the book’s dual identity. It is designed to be both a guide for spiritual intimacy and a manual for tangible life success.
Purpose and Thesis of the Work

The thesis of God Talks is that communication with the divine does not need to be a one-way, formal, or mystical endeavor; rather, God is accessible as a “guiding Friend.” Furthermore, the book posits that establishing this two-way communication is the ultimate key to not just spiritual peace, but also worldly success, abundance, and mental clarity.

The purpose of Ed Rush’s work is to demystify the concept of “hearing God.” By offering a simple, actionable process, he aims to help readers “re-code their minds”—a phrase that borrows heavily from neuro-linguistic programming and modern self-help—using divine input to break through personal and professional obstacles.
Summary of the Work

Over the course of 309 pages, God Talks serves as a practical manual for revamping one’s prayer life. It moves away from traditional, rote prayer and encourages a relational dialogue. Rush outlines a step-by-step methodology for asking God meaningful questions and, crucially, recognizing and receiving the answers.

The text promises comprehensive life improvements resulting from this practice. It covers how this divine dialogue can impart renewed energy, remove fears, cultivate stronger human relationships, and unlock the “secrets to abundance and success.” Whether the reader is a seasoned believer looking to deepen their faith, or a beginner who has never prayed before, the book claims to offer a starting point that can be implemented in “as little as a day.”
Analysis and Evaluation
Subjects and Voices: The Spiritual Coach

Ed Rush’s voice, as suggested by the blurb, is highly motivational, enthusiastic, and accessible. He bridges the gap between a pastor and an executive life coach. By framing God as a “Friend” rather than a distant deity, the tone removes the intimidation factor often associated with traditional religious texts.
Representation and Innovation

The innovation here lies in the vocabulary used to describe spiritual disciplines. Using phrases like “re-code your mind for success,” “launch your destiny,” and “unlock the secrets to abundance,” Rush translates ancient spiritual practices into the modern language of high-achievers and entrepreneurs.
Strengths and Limitations

Strengths: The book’s major strength is its practicality. Many believers struggle with the abstract nature of prayer; offering a “simple yet profound process” gives readers a tangible framework. The endorsements suggest it successfully bridges faith and actionable life strategy.
Limitations: The heavy emphasis on “success,” “abundance,” and “re-coding the mind” leans into prosperity-adjacent and self-help territories. Readers looking for strict, orthodox theology or a more traditional, contemplative approach to Christian mysticism might find the focus on personal success and “mind-hacking” slightly incongruous with historical teachings on suffering and surrender.
Contextual Analysis and Comparisons
Literary and Cultural Context

In the 2020s, there has been a massive cultural appetite for mindfulness and mental rewiring. God Talks captures the Christian demographic that wants the benefits of mindset coaching (focus, fearlessness, goal achievement) but insists that these benefits be rooted in a biblical worldview and a relationship with the Creator, rather than secular universe-manifestation concepts.
Suitability and Audience Guidance

Content Considerations: Wholesome, faith-based content. It assumes the reader is open to a Judeo-Christian understanding of God, though it appears accessible enough for spiritual seekers outside the formal church.
Target Audience: Highly recommended for goal-oriented believers, Christian entrepreneurs, and anyone who feels their prayer life has become a sterile monologue rather than a vibrant conversation.

Conclusion and Verdict

God Talks: How to Have a Friendship with God by Ed Rush is an uplifting, practical manual that effectively marries Christian spirituality with the actionable frameworks of the personal development industry. With strong reviews and a compelling premise, it succeeds in making the concept of two-way communication with God accessible, exciting, and deeply relevant to daily life. It is an excellent resource for anyone looking to revitalize their faith and find divine direction for their personal and professional goals.
Supplementary Elements: Reading Companions
What to Read Next

For readers who enjoyed Ed Rush’s approach to conversational prayer and faith-based success:

Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God by Mark Batterson – A fantastic, modern exploration of the different ways God speaks to believers in everyday life, written by a pastor known for his motivational style.
Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship with God by Dallas Willard – A more profound, classic theological dive into the mechanics and theology of communicating with the divine.
The Circle Maker: Praying Circles Around Your Biggest Dreams and Greatest Fears by Mark Batterson – Perfect for the reader who resonated with the “success and abundance” aspect of God Talks and wants another highly practical, goal-oriented approach to prayer.

A Wow of a book!

Loved the stories and the simplicity that says 'this can be your journey too'. I believe this book represents the heart of Gold to draw us to Himself in an intimate friendship without the fluff of religion and do-it-yourself projects. Thanks Ed for walking this walk and sharing your story with other weary travelers who simply want the reality of the love of our Father God in our lives. This book has been a great inspiration for me. I look forward to seeing where this journey leads.

Ed Rush’s God Talks is a spiritually motivational book aimed at readers who want a more personal and direct relationship with God but may feel disqualified by guilt, inconsistency, or past failures. Its core promise is clear from the subtitle: friendship with God is not reserved for the polished or spiritually accomplished. Instead, Rush writes for ordinary people who want to pray more honestly, listen more attentively, and believe that divine guidance is available even in the middle of a messy life.

One of the book’s most appealing qualities is its accessibility. Rush appears less interested in formal theology than in helping readers build a habit of conversation with God. The tone is encouraging, practical, and often framed in the language of personal transformation. Rather than presenting spirituality as distant or intimidating, the book treats it as something immediate and relational. That approach makes it especially inviting for readers who have felt overwhelmed by more academic Christian writing or discouraged by the idea that closeness with God belongs only to the spiritually elite.

A major strength of the book is its emphasis on action. It does not seem content merely to inspire. It tries to give readers a method. Rush connects prayer, reflection, mindset, and personal purpose in a way that is designed to feel usable in everyday life. For many readers, this practical structure will likely be the reason the book resonates. It offers not just reassurance but a process, and that process seems intended to help people move from vague spiritual longing into regular spiritual practice.

The book also appears to blend devotional Christianity with the language of self-help. Themes such as overcoming limiting beliefs, reshaping inner dialogue, finding purpose, and creating abundance place it within a contemporary motivational tradition as much as a traditional religious one. For some readers, this will be a real advantage. It gives the book energy and momentum, and it may help spiritual ideas feel relevant to work, relationships, confidence, and decision making. Rush seems intent on showing that faith is not a compartment of life but something that can reshape a person’s whole direction.

At the same time, that same quality may divide readers. Those looking for deep doctrinal engagement, close biblical interpretation, or careful theological nuance may find God Talks more inspirational than rigorous. Its appeal seems to rest in clarity and encouragement rather than complexity. If a reader wants a book that carefully wrestles with difficult theological questions, this may not fully satisfy. The framework appears streamlined and persuasive, but possibly simplified in ways that could feel thin to readers from more doctrinal or liturgical traditions.

Even so, the book’s central pastoral instinct is compelling. The idea that a person can approach God after making a million mistakes gives the work much of its emotional force. That message of spiritual openness, second chances, and relational intimacy is likely what gives the book its strongest impact. It speaks to shame without getting trapped in it, and it seems to offer hope in a direct, uncomplicated form.

Overall, God Talks sounds like a warm, practical, and encouraging guide for readers who want to make prayer feel more personal and faith feel more active. It will likely be most effective for people who appreciate straightforward spiritual coaching and who want a book that invites them to begin, not just to admire the idea of beginning. Readers seeking theological depth may want something more substantial, but readers seeking motivation, reassurance, and a conversational path toward God will likely find this book meaningful and energizing.

God may be working in this man's life and of those he teaches but up to Chapter 6 or 7 I noted no mention of Jesus or the Bible. Also this sounds like the Prosperity Gospel, not the true word of God.
An excerpt form the book in one of the earlier chapters said- You don't need to have any particular religious belief system to make God Talks work.
!!!
God can use a myriad of ways to draw people to him...but ultimately it's all about Jesus's sacrifice to pay for our sins and overcome the penalty of death for all who repent and believe.
Jesus said," I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." John:10:27
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." Romans 12:2 ESV
So pray for discernment. If you seek God with all your heart, you will find him. Per Jeremiah 29:13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
Per Deuteronomy 4:29 But from there you will seek the Lord your God and you will find him, if you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.
I wrote this review not with any desire to condemn but with a heart which desires to draw people to Jesus, my Lord and Savior who loves us all with an infinite love and desires us to accept His gift of amazing mercy and grace for those who repent and believe.

I love it! I was on my journey of learning to hear from God and discerning His voice, and I love how the author, Ed Rush, made it so simple and easy to understand and even gives step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

It was a very enjoyable read, and I laughed a lot while reading this. For anyone who wants to begin hearing from God, I think this is a great beginner book to start with.

The only thing that wasn't covered in this book was how to discern His voice because sometimes the enemy speaks lies. But since this book was made for everyone, not just believers, I believe God, in His love, will protect His children nevertheless.

Love this book! In fact, I love it so much I actually bought a book for myself, the audiobook, and one for a friend.
● This book is a great guide through the process of learning how to hear from God (whether you believe in Him or not!)
● It’s perfect for anyone who is finding themselves struggling with lack of success, money troubles, relationship issues, and many other challenges that may stem from our own backstory.
● Overall, I found it very helpful and my key takeaway is that my life is better from working through the prompts for hearing God in regard to seven specific areas of my life.

I won this book through a good reads giveaway and I enjoyed and learned a few things about how to talk to God and hear his voice, but I would suggest making sure you have a notebook and a pen handy to take notes to this book. If I had to start over again that's what I would do is have that pen and paper handy. I feel like it's a book that should be run a couple times so you can get the deepest understanding. Needless to say I will be having to read this book over again so I can take my own advice and take lots and notes and lean into it deeper than I did the first time.

I won God Talks: How to Have a Friendship with God through Goodreads, and I really enjoyed it. The writing felt like the author was sitting right across from me, talking. Some of the ways he described things made me laugh out loud.

The book also reminded me how important it can be to slow down when talking to God. In such a rushed world, my prayers and conversations with Him are often on the go. I know He always listens, but sometimes I need to pause and make room to hear Him, too. That’s a reminder I’ll carry with me.

Don’t read this if you’re looking força quick fix

This is a motivational book director based on Christian principles. If you don’t know the bible you’ll miss the references. So, take a breath bible scholars and theologians.

I do endorse the notion that God wants to talk to YOU regardless of who you are. Understand too that this book is the beginning of a journey not the journey itself.

This book is not only a great guide to help you hear from God and strengthen your relationship with our Savior, its also told in a fashion that is fun to read and very engaging. the author doesn't act like he is a holy roller who has life all figured out, or like he is above you. he tells you his mistakes and admits that he will keep having them. I loved this book so much and even bought another copy for my daughter. a must read if you want a deeper relationship with God.

perhaps the best book I’ve ever read

So simple, so honest, so straight forward and so real. I love the way the book was written as an epistolary to me (and to you). I especially love how Mr Rush invites all of the members of the million mistake club to begin and to change the world with him. This book has given me so much hope. I’ve already purchased a copy for each of my 6 children. Thank you Mr Rush f thank you God my Father for always being here to talk

This book is great for people who have an open mind, and dare I say a relationship with God. It references many parts of the Bible, but I feel you also need a sense of who God is already to get the most out of the God Talks. I was moved several times, I cried about 5. The first half of the book brought so many revelations, but the last half with business talks was hard to follow. Overall, I think it is worth the read. You may learn something about yourself.
