Falling in love ruined Maxwell once. He refuses to let it ruin him again.
Maxwell Terry has spent his life as a doctor helping others, all while hiding his deepest secret from them. He knows firsthand the pain and terror that comes from falling in love, and he promised himself that he’d never make the same mistake again. But Garrett Twal, with his easy laugh and his charming smile, makes him want to break that promise.
Garrett Twal has always been the biggest and strongest man in the room, and for as long as he can remember, he’s used his size to protect and care for people. He’d care for the sweet doctor with the steady hands and the sad eyes too, if Maxwell Terry would just let him! Even if the man is clearly hiding something. And even if Garrett knows better than most the damage a traitor can do.
But Garrett and Maxwell don’t have time to take it slow with each other. Their planet is lying in ruins, with poisonous storms raging through the air and pirates picking over its carcass. As their relationship heats up and the danger around them grows more intense, will they be able to hold on to each other or will their fears and their pasts tear them apart and doom their home?
With generous servings of hurt/comfort, secrets, and trust issues (and snarky Sebastian), The Alien Medic is the fourth book in Interspecies Alliances—a series best read in order about a galaxy torn apart by conflict and the men fighting to keep it together. Everyone gets HEAs once the series ends, but first, each novel follows its own couple with their own HFN ending on this epic space adventure.
emotional abuse that turns violent (the violence is brief), science fiction violence, references to war, refugees, crime, invading armies, brief body dysmorphia.
This is def my favorite in the series so far. Maxwell’s and Garrett’s book was even more than I expected. I got the pining and the heartache that came with the secrets, I got a wonderfully tender love story and an exciting plot.
4.5 - Interesting, a different take on the mind controlling alien slug thing. I recommend reading the free story that is mentioned at the front of this, the Alien Refugee, as it gives some extra world building and we see the beginning of the Cartel leaders that we met at the end of the last book.
I like that the author has written about the same type of alien but one that lives a very different life to Sebastian in the previous story. Maxwell has been in his human body since he was a fetus, not sure how he got in there, but still it’s interesting how connected he is to his body and how that affects him and his abilities. The fact that his identity is a huge secret was a nice change to Sebastian and added some delicious tension and angst.
I also liked seeing some more Qesh, the aliens whose emotions show in colourful swirls across their skin, which was cool.
Maxwell experiences intimate partner violence from his ex-partner in the form of manipulation and gaslighting as well as some physical abuse which I thought was really well written and quite impactful and could be triggering to some readers so thought I’d mention it here.
Overall this had lots of good different ideas, i found it a bit slower to pick up momentum but the second half was much quicker. I actually enjoyed the slower first half more with the relationship building between the MC’s. These two are really lovely and emotional together. I found my brain disconnecting a bit in all the action of the second half but I think this was more a me thing. I’m definitely interested in reading Patrick’s story of this weirdly enjoyable little alien series.
The main reason this wasn’t a 5 for me was the ending again felt missing. I really wanted to see more of what happened with Maxwells situation and what happened in their community and how they ended up where they did. Otherwise this was really a very enjoyable read.
I'm giving this book a solid 4.5⭐, because the ending was abrupt and didn't give us more time with the MMCs, the book should've had about 30 pages more. Again, it would be also nice to have a small prologue to find out more about the MMCs and a bit of past that they've already shared.
I gotta say though, I was pleasantly surprised. This is the 3rd installment in this series and I'm really hopeful we'll be getting a lot more.
This is a new author for me, these are her only and first books, so for a debut series I'll say this is amazing. Really good writing, amazing ideas, a great setting and I mean, who doesn't love aliens, come on.
🟢 Alien/Human 🟡 Parasitic species (worms) 🔵 Size difference 🟣 Age gap (must be over 10 years) 🟠 Emotional 🔵 Very good and detailed plot 🔴 Angsty ❗ TW : a past very emotionally abusive relationship 🌶️ Spice is very good; t/b
This was Maxwell's story. He's a torvar, just like Sebastian and he's living in a human settlement in Tava that was run down with the yellow war gas, so in this edition, everyone from the Resistance is settled on Carta.
Maxwell is a small guy, a doctor and noone knows he's a torvar in his community. He has a very good friend/crush Garrett, for whom we were almost certain is a complete asshole in the previous book, but in this installment Garrett has actually become one of my favourite characters in this series.
Garrett's tall, strong, comes from a mining working class family, has lost his family along the way and is working for the Resistance, being only in his 20s. There you go, feast your eyes, Garrett's a hottie.
The chemistry between Garrett and Maxwell was very palpable, but what makes their story very different from others is the strong emotional undertone. Both MMCs are very sensitive, gentle and have a sensible emotional connection. Maxwell is very submissive by nature and he's not only shy and uncertain, but also in need of reassurance, of a solid emotional support that he's never known, since he's been living in secret, almost a lie. He constantly has to hide, can't trust anyone, can't open up, so Garrett was providing that one friendship that really centered Maxwell, at least that's how I felt.
The problem here was Maxwell's past relationship with Kurt, the former abusive partner. Kurt was an older and past lover, presumed dead already, so when he comes back, Maxwell goes far back into that victim mindframe, the abuse he's had to go through with Kurt and I thought the author really presented that well here, I took two days to read this book, I had to put it down a lot, there was no specific TW for this anywhere. Maxwell was almost powerless in Kurt's grip, so if that's your trigger here, be ready. Kurt doesn't have much page time with Maxwell, but of what he does have is very angsty.
When Garrett finally realised Maxwell is in fact a torvar, he went through some internal turmoil, but it wasn't any kind of emotional betrayal or anything similar, Garrett did hate torvars all his life, but he made a big exception here, because he simply loved Maxwell.
I absolutely loved this book, because it was so heartwarming, emotional and connected. Garrett and Maxwell had an amazing love story and by now I don't think anything this author comes up with can go wrong. She painted a beautiful picture of two men being gentle and attentive with each other and I ate it up.
🌶️ The spice was absolutely fantastic. Sensual. I loved it. So, so good. They were so good together. Garrett cares a lot about consent. Yeah, that's fucking hot. He lets Maxwell lead the way, even though Maxwell is quite submissive. He calls the shots and Garrett is so damn confident, stable and strong that he has no problem leading Maxwell and taking care of him. It was a great combination of characteristics that worked perfectly together.
The dialogues during sex, the dirty talk, the connection, everything was well thought-out. I would so much like more of this. I was expecting a lot more of their time together by the end of the book or at least in the epilogue. They seemed so domestic and vulnerable with each other, so it was a shame their book didn't have more of them.
When Garrett and Maxwell finally find their happy ending, the immediate problem is resolved and in the next chapter they're already living back on Tava, having a house and... then what? What happened to everyone finding out Maxwell is a torvar? How does he live and work now in this community? Garrett and Maxwell moved in together, got a house, I mean - I want to hear all about it. I want to know how their lives are going, what do they do, I want to experience it.
Hopefully next time.
This was an absolutely satisfying reading these past two days and I'm off to Patrick's book.
*One thing I will say is : please, please include a little more prologue and a longer resolve at the end. Every couple has their own HFN, but they don't get anything else in the next book. It almost seems they're cheated out of a very good story. I understand the couples can't get their final HEA yet, but they could at least get a prolongued epilogue.
While I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the previous, I still enjoyed it more than 95% of what I’ve read this year. The scenes with the abusive ex were really stressful for me to read but the action and the MC’s were worth it.
Not as much action though still plenty to tide over this action enthusiast. This book was definitely cerebral and hit hard with potentially triggering themes. Great lead in for the ongoing alien wars.
KU, sci-fi, book in a series, action, adventure, interracial, themes of past abuse, PTSD, medic, soldier, military men.
Getting this ARC made me read the previous books in the series and I'm so glad I did. What a gem of a series and The Alien Medic is my favorite of them all.
We saw a little bit of Garrett and Maxwell in the previous book, but we get an entirely different side to both of them here. Garrett is so sweet and I adore pining by someone who is open with their feelings to the other but does not pressure them and is content with keeping their existing relationship because they value them in their life. Garrett is protective, especially with the return of Max's ex, but he also believes in Max's capabilities. Overall, I thought their relationship was healthy and balanced even with the secrets between them and how they eventually deal with that.
Incredibly heartfelt sci-fi world the author has built and I can't wait to read more!
Eryn Ivers is my last year’s big revelation, and I love seeing their progress as an author. Every book is unique, adds layers to the created world, and gives characters more and more depth. I can’t stop recommending their books, and oh boy, I already want the next one!
The good: x Garrett. I love how good of a person he is. He genuinely cares about everyone, even if he doesn’t trust easily. Is he paranoid? Yes, probably, definitely. But at the same time, he cares so much about people. I can see him as a leader, and he is the opposite of Leon. It’s a distinction that fascinated me while reading, and I’m a little bit sad that he didn’t get an opportunity to actually shape the future of his people. Maybe in the next book(s)? Because he deserves it so much. x The plot. I like how every book presents different situations and different challenges - thanks to that, we get to see how unique each MC is, and how the world changes because of them. In this book we mostly focus on semi-humanitarian missions, and while there are some bigger forces at play, saving people (and other species) is the most important part, nicely fitting Garrett’s missions and Maxwell’s profession. x The way both MCs fit together was golden. They helped each other, shared the same values and just worked together in a way that on the first glance wasn’t obvious. Their motivations and experiences were similar, their goals complementary. It’s just a gorgeous pair and #couple_goals. x I am no specialist in depictions of toxic relationships/partners, but the way it was described here seemed deep enough. I’m pretty sure it deserves a TW, and it checks a lot of boxes of how victims fall into the hands of an abuser. Even without reading explicit scenes “from the past” I could easily see how Maxwell changed from the time when he was with Kurt; but how hard it was for him to finally let go and live the best life. (But omg how much it hurt me how he implied that Garrett would do the same, my heart broke in so many pieces.) x I like the change that Maxwell went through by the end of the book. I would love to read more about it, see the whole process and how he coped with important things that made him “a new man”, but I expected a different solution and was surprised. A surprise like that is always a good thing and it makes a book really special.
The so-so: x It’s an angsty book. More than the previous one, which did surprise me. It’s not a bad thing, and it did make me cry a couple of times, while also didn’t allow me to just put the book aside and do anything else. In the end, I was a little bit disappointed that we didn’t get to see MCs being actually happy, honest and working together. There were moments that were full of love and devotion, but never lasted for long because something was unsaid or someone was hurt. I expected that the main conflict would finish earlier, and the new couple would get some spotlight without constant heartbreak. There was no big drama miscommunication though, which is always a big plus in angsty books! x The scenes of passion were heavy on emotions, every time in a different setting, always pushing the romance forward, but… Somehow, the writing seemed “typical” for that kind of description. It’s not something easy to describe, and probably most people won’t notice, but for me all depictions of carnal heights looked as done “by the book”. Deep (hehe) and thoughtful, but without uniqueness. And doesn’t that say how much Eryn grows as an author? Now I want more, and more, and better! x The new “unknown” (I really don’t want to give spoilers here) gave me conflicted feelings. It’s a popular trope in sci-fi books (usually not romances, mind you), and it’s tricky to do it well. My guess is that it will be a more prominent element in future books, and I hope, so so so much, that the author knows what they want to do, and how not to make it too shallow. That being said, it’s a nice promise and shows how much more this series can give to its readers. Can’t wait!
And the best quote ever: [Oliver] “Playing darts with Sebastian is good practice for negotiating with my father. He’ll try to wipe the floor with me while saying mean things too.”
I received an ARC of this book from the author, and I am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review
This series has a weird little place in my heart (robot tentacles in the first one, remember?) and I’m happy to keep reading as long as Eryn Ivers wants to keep writing in its world.
This fourth installment had built-in, delicious tension: medic Maxwell is secretly a torvar, an insect-like alien species that can body hop. He’s secretive and has isolated himself to protect this secret from everyone, but especially his friend Garrett, a fellow Resistance member who has poor opinions and deep mistrust of the torvar species. When Maxwell’s toxic, abusive ex reappears, he afraid of being manipulated once again and that the ex will leverage his secret against him.
It took a while for this book to pick up momentum, probably about halfway through? It’s understandable: the previous book with Sebastian, the “out” torvar in the Resistance and the Resistance leader Leon was the epic resolution to the ongoing war between humans and the klah’eel alien species that had been building from the previous installments. This book begins in the denouement of that book, pretty much. The war is over, they are reaching a new normal, resolving lingering issues from the end of the war, etc. That sort of thing is tedious, which is why books and movies rarely spend much time on them.
It was a lot of Maxwell and Garrett spending time in the clinic together and talking (while also doing a lot of “we can’t be together” type of thinking). Even when Maxwell’s ex Kurt shows up, it takes a bit for that to truly heat up because Maxwell keeps on cutting off active measures to combat him at the knees. So there wasn’t a lot of action, which was a big change from the previous book which was like, non-stop action.
I found myself really looking forward to the reveal of Maxwell’s torvar secret, as it obviously wasn’t going to happen through a calm, mature discussion. I made a guess, and it was the right guess. Even so, it was great and it really ratcheted up the tension that had been steadily ramping up. This part of the book also introduced a new alien species, new conflict and more political intrigue that expanded the universe even further.
The sex was also really satisfying. Because Maxwell has trust issues and trauma from his relationship with Kurt, him being vulnerable in bed was another layer to his overall relationship with Garrett. It was all very satisfying and handled really well while being pretty hot.
There is intimate partner violence discussed in both past and present, as Maxwell’s abuser reappears and continues his abusive tactics. So if that’s something you are sensitive to, be aware some of it happens on page and Maxwell is very much still dealing with the aftermath of his experiences.
Overall, this was a good read that turned much better once the action started and the plot got going. Happy to read whatever comes next; the possibilities seem wide open.
| I received an ARC, and this is my honest, freely given review. |
Independent reviewer for GRR. I was gifted my copy of this book.
This is book 4 in the Interspecies Alliances series, and you really SHOULD read the other books first. You need to know how these people got to this point, because not all is recapped.
We met Maxwell (again, loved that Maxwell was not shortened, not once!) and Garrett in previous books, and I will admit, Maxwell especially, had piqued my interest and I'm so glad he gets a book!
While in-keeping with this series, I found this book to be a whole lot more emotional than the others. Maxwell's emotions in particular.
he has a secret he is keeping from Garrett and it's why he keeps Garrett at arms length, but he really wants to be wrapped up in the gentle giant's arms, just once. Once, however, turns out not to be enough, and Maxwell knows, he KNOWS he needs to tell Garrett, but look what happened last time he told someone? And then, said someone turns up and you can feel Maxwell's terror off the page. I must have made a noise at this point, cos my partner asked if I was ok, and I rarely, RARELY react verbally when reading. And I'm like "NO. I'm not OK, poor Maxwell is not ok either" and my partner looked at me like I'd grown two heads! But I digress.
I understand why Maxwell keeps this from Garrett, I really do, and I understand why Garrett acts as he does, when he founds out, because both men have been hurt, badly. But Garrett does pull his head out his a$$ quickly. Not quite quick enough, but still.
I loved that Garrett makes it obvious he wants Maxwell, and he will wait. he waited long enough already. I loved Garrett reaction to the new Maxwell. But again like Leon and Sebastian, I think it's a trait of this particular species, Garrett KNEW it was Maxwell in the qesh skin, and Garrett loved experimenting with this new improved Maxwell.
There is a new threat to life on Tava, along with the pirates, and this series is by no means finished. I hope Patrick gets a story, being as he gets a bum deal here!
A much more emotional, but no less steamy/smexy book, a very welcome addition to the series.
Maxwell and Garrett were so sweet together. Both insecure in their feelings for one another and rightly so. They both have pasts riddled with doubts, self recriminations, betrayal and worst of all, not being able to trust yourself. Maxwell is hiding a huge secret that one past partner knew of and used it to manipulate, gaslight him and keep him confused and controlled with. Garrett has wanted more from Maxwell since day one but he's just the sweetest, kindest man who would never pressure him and has tried to keep his distance at the expense of his own heart. I loved that he was exactly who Maxwell needed him to be, secure enough in himself and never trying to control him, knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that Maxwell is completely capable on his. All he ever wanted was for Maxwell to know that he could rely on him and trust him to support him through anything. When Maxwell's past comes barreling back full force he's instantly on the defensive and trying to figure out how to best protect himself but he doesn't want to lose Garrett. Kurt was a despicably vile character and I'm immensely happy with his very fitting ending. The attraction between them was always simmering below the surface and it finally ignites when Maxwell let's down his defenses. I also enjoyed the humor sprinkled throughout the story. There was plenty of fast paced action, danger, drama, and political intrigue that kept me thoroughly engaged but it was the beautiful connection between Maxwell and Garrett that had me racing towards the end. I'm definitely looking forward to Patrick's story but also dreading it at the same time because I've absolutely fallen in love with these characters and this amazing world.
Maxwell Terry is a doctor with a big secret. He knows that if it gets out that all he's worked so hard for will be lost. He tries his best to keep distance between himself and others; to remain professional but not too friendly. But there's someone who won't keep his distance. Someone that Maxwell can't seem to keep at arms length.
Garret Twal is a strong military type who has the heart of a marshmallow when it comes to Maxwell. He wants to keep Maxwell safe and when someone from Maxwell's past comes back he's doubly sure that Maxwell is in need of protection.
When Garret is charged with a mission to save some people off world and Maxwell is appointed his helper things happen and Maxwell's secret is exposed. Will Maxwell lose everything? Will Garret see past the lies and remember who Maxwell really is? Or will these two lose everything in the face of a dangerous enemy?
This is a well written story with science fiction and romance intertwined. Maxwell and Garret have great chemistry as friends that flows over to their romantic relationship too. The story is entertaining and kept me glued to the book from page one. The supporting characters are all well fleshed out and well used. The continuing story arc from the previous three books continues well. I would have liked a little more of the romance but the science fiction is really nice too.
Rescue missions, pirates and romance, what a great addition to the series! This is the fourth story in this series and it is just as amazing and at times unnerving as the previous ones. I voluntarily decided to write this review based on an ARC of this story. The war has just ended, Garrett is busy rescuing survivors while besieged by pirates and Maxwell is busy 24/7 helping his patients. In between, the attraction between Garrett and Maxwell builds. But then someone from Maxwell's past turns up, someone Maxwell never wants to go back to, but Maxwell has a secret, a secret that could change everything.... This story kept me on the edge of my seat. So much happens; the past catching up, secrets being revealed, pirates, Klah'Eel, unknown alien species, rescue missions, etc. The characters are very likable, the way relationships and romance developed felt natural to me. I also loved the world-building. All stories are set in the same world and deal with the aftermath of war. Each story has its own point of view and it is more of a story within an overarching story than a continuation of the previous one. However, the storyline clearly develops throughout the series, so I prefer to read the series in order. This story has quite a bit of emotional baggage and violence, but also has action, romance, snark and a HFN. I very much enjoyed reading it and can't wait for the next one, especially Patrick's story!
All the love in the world for Garrett and Maxwell, who work together beautifully. Maxwell has a secret and plenty of past trauma, which shapes how he moves through the world in ways both large and small. I love that Garrett, the kindly, protective, absolute sweetheart who cares for him, stays on the right side of protective, rather than smothering, and that he always seems to respect and value Maxwell for who he is: they each have baggage, they aren’t perfect, they make mistakes, but they fit together and, especially in the high stakes environment in which they exist, honestly manage to be ridiculously sweet as well as hot and likable together. Speaking of said high stakes environment, a word of praise for the setting as well as the characters here: as with the rest of the series, it’s easy to become immersed in, and deeply invested in, the universe these characters inhabit: it’s a vividly drawn landscape (space scape?) where the odds are often dire and yet not without hope for lots of people, including the ones readers have so many reasons to care about, and it’s hard to ask for more than that, really, to have a solid balance of drama and intrigue and romance.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This book is full of romance, emotions, and intrigue. It's sweet, yet steamy, but no insta-love, just gradual acceptance of mutual feelings. Garrett and Maxwell are so sweet together, but each has some emotional baggage so an easy does it is what they both do. Maxwell feels trapped in his life, a life he's kept secret because of his existing second nature. Garrett helps Maxwell recognize that being your true self helps you to find that inner peace in your life. This is full of humor, is engaging, and full of heat. A story not to be missed! It will warm your heart and leave you smiling. I loved the back and forth and the tit for tat between Garrett and Maxwell. Being the true friend that he is Garrett shows his sweetheart side in that he cares for Maxwell's emotions. Here is a story full of humor, is engaging, and full of heat. This is the fourth and final story in this series and is one not to be missed as it will warm a reader's heart and leave smiles. Characters from the previous books make appearances so now I have to find and read their stories. This is my voluntary and willing review for the ARC provided by GRR.
I enjoyed this angsty, sweet, steamy love story between Dr. Maxwell Terry and Garrett Twal. These men have a lot going against them: Maxwell's deep, dark secret that has the potential to not only destroy their friendship but also to derail their budding relationship and the return of Maxwell's ex with his obsessive tendencies, and his threats to Maxwell's newfound peace and freedom. Garrett is ever hopeful that Maxwell will share the secret he's so afraid will mean the end of everything between them, especially the deep friendship they share. Maxwell needs Garrett's acceptance of who he really is, but based on current experience, he doesn't see that happening. And if his ex tells Garrett, all bets are off. Maxwell's crippling personal fear and insecurity are in sharp contrast to his large-and-in-charge calm, confident professional persona. Garrett's patient love and devotion and his ultimate trust are hard fought for and hard-won. I love their story and the suspenseful situations in which they find themselves. And I do love how Maxwell's ex gets his comeuppance! *exultant fist pump*
Maxwell Terry is a doctor with a secret that put him in a bad situation and left him damaged. It has made him doubt himself and hold back from a meaningful relationship. Garrett Twal is a big man who uses his size to protect and care for others. He is gentle, kind, and patient. He has been interested in Maxwell for quite some time but he knows Maxwell hides a secret and just wants to convince him that he can trust him. Garrett will patiently wait for him to come to him in his own time. As they both start to warm up to each other, someone from Maxwell’s past comes back and his secret is exposed. Will Garrett choose to believe and support Maxwell? Or will any chance they had to be together be torn apart?
The story line moves at a perfect pace and the action will keep the reader’s attention. There is enough detail that it is easy for the reader to visualize everything the author describes. And the characters are very likable (except for the bad guy and the pirates perhaps). Grab your copy and let the story pull you in.
There's love, heartbreak, and suspense galore in this story. There is no instant chemistry or love, simply a slow but steady acknowledgment of each other's sentiments. Even though Garrett and Maxwell have chemistry, they both have emotional baggage, so they take things slow. Maxwell is frustrated by the fact that he is unable to break free of his mundane, covert existence. Garrett shows Maxwell that being authentic is the key to achieving happiness on a deep, personal level. This is hilarious, interesting, and really passionate. A tale you won't want to miss! It'll make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The verbal sparring between Garrett and Maxwell was hilarious. Garrett reveals his amiable qualities by showing concern for Maxwell's feelings, as befits a true friend. This is a hilarious, exciting tale that will have you riveted till the very end. The conclusion to this trilogy is a heartwarming and humorous tale that readers should not miss.I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
Maxwell, like Sebastian, is hiding a big secret. Unlike Sebastian, it is a secret he holds very very close to the vest, not just because of the widespread prejudice against the torvar species, but because of the lasting emotional damage done to him by a previous partner. Garret has been harbouring feelings for Maxwell from the very beginning, but insecurities have led Maxwell to believe he isn’t worthy, making him intent on holding Garret at arms’ length (even though that resolve breaks down more with each interaction). Their story was beautifully written and I was so happy for them when they finally came together with all secrets out in the open.
This entire series is compelling and this book really pulled me in. Eryn Ivers has really created a fully developed world full of various species, languages, customs and more. I love that despite how high action and fast moving the stories have been in each book, the romance doesn’t suffer or feel rushed.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
As always in this series, the main characters in the romance, here Maxwell and Garrett are wonderful and you root for them to open up to each other and get closer but there is so much other good stuff going on here as well. There is the struggle to survive the harsh living conditions and all the exterior threats from pirates, the war and all the political scheming. The world building is detailed, the characters fit well within it, and the plot is clearly building toward some great conclusions and HEAs in the final book. Maxwell and Garrett here, have their own person demons to deal with and it's clear to the reader and Garrett that Maxwell is hiding things. One of those turns out to be an ex- who deserves everything that happens to him. I adore a good villainous ex-. Garrett is a born protector who is also gentle and empathetic enough to give a partner space while always having their back and that's just what Maxwell needs, though it takes him a while to realize that. I can't wait to see what the author has to show us in book five and I'll be sorry to see this series end.
This is the fourth in the Interspecies Alliances series and while you can read this book as a standalone, I highly recommend reading them in order, as there are some great past characters in this book, plus so much information about the war and the precarious peace following is woven throughout the other books. This book was well-written and kept my attention throughout. It was interesting to get to know another Torvar since their species was so rare, relatively speaking. I liked the interactions with the MC’s and the other characters. I enjoyed the dynamics between the MC’s and watching their romance blossom over time. Maxwell was so cautious because he needed to keep his core identity a secret and he had been burnt in the past when he did share. Garrett was such a lovable and easy-going guy that everyone loved to be around. They worked well together and the chemistry between them was really hot. I love this author’s writing style, and this was another book that was well worth the read, and I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series.
I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was another excellent installment in this series. Maxwell and Garrett make an excellent partnership - both have been through trauma unrelated to actual war, and they've both come out with trust issues. Garrett is a great combination of strong and sweet. He's helpful and caring and determined without being pushy, and protective without being patronizing. Maxwell has that sweet and competent energy combination that he's worked really hard for. I really hated Kurt. He was such an awful, awful person. Aside from the relationship stuff, it was cool to find out what was going on now the war was over - the Resistance has shifted into rescue mode and are working to get their people and their homeland safe from the ravages of the fear gas. I'm definitely looking forward to more books in this series.
Maxwell is a healer who takes care of lots of people in need of medical attention. He really sacrifices for those in need. But he, because of who he is, feels he has to keep himself from others, not letting anyone get close. He likes Garrett but he fears what will happen if Garrett knows who he really is, not just who he assumes he is. I really liked the way this story played out as it reminds us that the silliest things and the most erroneous impressions can keep us from embracing someone we like. It is sad that Maxwell has to hide and wonderful when they work their way through Garrett finding out and realizing that he needs to rethink and embrace Maxwell because he does know who he is and he loves who he knows. Great job! Good reminder about assumptions and impressions. I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Love is a superpower. Dr Maxwell, dedicated his life to helping and saving others. He kept his head down and followed his path. He has dangerous secrets and keeps his heart encased in cement for protection. Garret, is large of stature and has always used his size to care and protect. He wants to protect and care for Dr Maxwell, but he recognizes his self preservation and detachment. Too bad their world was in crisis and needed all hands on deck to protect and serve the planet. They are sent on a mission together, that forces proximity. The past dosn't stay buried or hidden and complicates everything. Can these two work together to save all? Can they find trust? Great story! Good intensity, mystery, excitement and decision making processes. Nicely done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I am not entirely sure of how to review this book. It had its ups and downs, but there was also a lot of dull, sleep-inducing moments as well, which is quite odd from Eryn. She has had me so engrossed with the series, each story outdoing the last, but then she fell a tad bit short with this one. Don’t get me wrong, the romance and excitement was still there, but it was a helluva slow journey.
Garrett and Maxwell’s characters were so much fun to read about. Garrett’s protectiveness was on target, even when Maxwell didn’t see it. But, Maxwell’s past, between his own family and his time with Kurt, were undoubtedly the biggest challenges for anyone. Not to discredit Garrett’s past, but Kurt was just ugh! I am glad these two were able to make it through the obstacles and overcome their insecurities for their HEA!!
I see people complaining about Garrett and how "easily" he got over his prejudice and like...did we read the same book??? Yeah it wasn't some long drawn out excruciating fight, but that's the point! We saw him start to accept Sebastian throughout the story, and I also see it as Maxwell's insecurities coming out a little and projecting onto Garrett things that weren't actually true. Buck was written superbly (in a gross way) and the author really got the signs and effects of abuse down well. The only thing that was lacking was outside conflict and world building. The previous books advanced the overarching plot and contributed to the series, but this one didn't. If you left it out, the universe this is set in would not be any different. We get a sneak peak at a new alien race, but it's so minor and brief it just doesn't matter.
I have enjoyed all the books in this series to date and the same can be said for this one.
I thought the change from the high action story in Sebastian and Leon’s book to a sweeter love story in this worked really well - that’s not to say there was no action I just think the love story was the overall event.
Loved both MCs and I have to say that Garret really grew on me as I hadn’t been too sure about him after The Alien Infiltrator. Maxwell is just the sweetest so was expecting to like him even more in his own book and I did!
Overall a great book and love story and fine addition to the series - can’t wait to see what’s next.
I received an advance reader copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed this story! It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention the entire time. We have gotten glimpses of these two men and some of their interactions but I was happy to finally get more of that and see what was going on with them, especially Maxwell. There were some twists in this one as well and I was also excited to see the next step of what is happening with their planet and trying to save it and their people. This story is the fourth book and series is best read in order. These men have been fighting for independence and now to save their planet. Each story does follow different main characters but the overall story arc builds from the last, some super close, and stories do end with a happy for now and get to see past characters in other books. There was plenty of action and intrigue in this story and some hot sexy times as well. I loved watching Garrett and Maxwell come together and how Garrett treated Maxwell, before and after learning about his past. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
