The Vampire in the Bookstore

Rate this book
There is nothing more interesting to a book-loving vampire than an old bookstore...
and a human with the rich aroma of ink and parchment embedded in her skin...

For more centuries than he cared to count, Declan had found more comfort among his books and his personal library than he ever did around others, whether they be human or supernatural. With eternity before him, he treasures knowledge, the pursuit of it, and the preservation. Nothing, and no one, could ever part him from such endeavors.

Until, among the stacks of a familiar bookstore, he encounters a human with a love of books that rivals his own, and an interest in perusing his personal collection...

But for Rosamund, meeting Declan is so much more than exploring his home library, as she knows his secret. His deepest one. The one she knows he treasures above all others. She knows that he... is her favorite author.

And in just one very loosely planned encounter... she needs him to reveal everything... For the pursuit of knowledge, of course. And perhaps something else.

This monster romance features a plus-size heroine who knows what she wants and how to get it and her vampire love interest, who shares her love of old books and extensive libraries. This novella encompasses a long evening shared, ending with a HEA.

the fact that the top reviews for this book are all people who DNFed it just shows me how much of a clown i was for pushing through, because this was BAD.

the entire premise of this book is that two bibliophiles meet and are instantly enamored with each other, but neither of them are interesting characters at ALL and they have zero chemistry other than they both are weirdly obsessed with books. and not even what's in them, just book binding and collecting.

after a whirlwind (instalove) introduction that was FULL of nonsensical, overwritten jargon intended to make the reader realize these are book lovin' folks and nothing else, the vampire brings this character back to his mansion to attempt to fuck her to death?? calling this a blood/pain/choking kink is really underselling that the entire time the vampire is fucking this main character, all he's thinking about is killing her. it was truly disgusting, and the only reason i held out the garbage first half of this book was to see if the smut redeemed it, but it only sealed the coffin.

ultimately i read this for the plus size readathon, but the main character's weight is never even mentioned and not part of the plot at all, so all in all i feel really misled by this cover. overall one of the worst books i've read and thank god it was just a novella because this made zero sense and i hope the male main character rots in hell

Unfortunately, the writing style for THE VAMPIRE IN THE BOOKSTORE is not working for me. It feels overly formal, which I think the author is doing because Declan is an ancient vampire, so there's a reason for it, but it's not enjoyable for me to read. Also, the author is way overusing the ellipsis and it's downright distracting; I'm talking 1-3 times on EVERY page. The story and characters aren't grabbing my attention so I don't feel the need to push through the writing style. Might work for others, but not for me.

A steamy novella with a sexy ancient vampire who is obsessed with books and offers you his devotion and his full library sounds like a dream. However, this book was not dreamy to me, the writing was not my style, and even felt pretentious at times. I think that might have been intentional because of the age of said vampire but I did not click with the writing and frankly, because of that I did not love the characters.

Oh man, this book was so close to being a full on 5 stars but there were a couple issues that pushed it down to 3. The author has great ideas and the book doesn't have any major spelling/grammar errors but she struggles with tone and characterization.

One really strange issue was the way Rosemond spoke. She was a modern, 30 year old woman so why did she speak in the same formal, stilted way that the 300 year old vampire did? "I regret to inform you that my love for the preservation of books has a rather simple origin", or "the pleasure of your company will make up for the lack of conversation, and besides, we cannot talk while we eat" My girl has never met a contraction in her life. The weirder thing is that her thinking is often modern and normal so her speech comes off as a weird affectation. Like she's purposely modeling the way she talks after a Jane Austen character.

Declan started great (it's so unusual to find a vampire who is actually vicious in this type of sweet-ish, small town monster book) but the writing kept doing small things to undercut this and it kind of took the teeth out of it (pun). For one thing, every time he thought about wanting to have sex with her, he had this weird habit of tacking on a "but only if she's willing, of course". Yes, we get it. That's the assumption unless otherwise specified, dude. I respect the author wanting to emphasize consent but it works better as a "show, don't say" thing. Throw in a playful "are you sure this what you want?" during a sex scene instead of derailing all his fantasies with an asterisk.

Overall, it had all the pieces of a great book if the dialogue hadn't kept getting in it's own way.

With so many amazing books to read and so little time, what’s a girl to do? Become immortal, of course! Declan is a vampire who happens to be in love with books, any and all books, as many as he can get his hands on. So when he meets beautiful Rosamund in a bookstore and realizes that she loves them just as much as he does, he’s instantly enamored. He has to have her, but what will she do when she finds out his secret??

This was short, steamy (HOLY) and sweet, and I really liked it! I’m a sucker for vampires who share each other’s blood, but throw in a huge library, an insatiable sex machine, and eternity and I’m sold. As a fellow book coveter, I’m a little miffed that I don’t have my own vampire lover to give me everlasting life, buy me books, and call me a good girl. Le sigh.

⭐️ 1.5 stars ⭐️

"There is nothing more interesting to a book-loving vampire than an old bookstore... and a human with the rich aroma of ink and parchment embedded in her skin..."

Buckle in, folks, because I have a lot to say about this book. Most of it is negative. Not sure why I’ve dedicated myself to writing this long review for a novella only 150ish pages that isn’t meant to be taken as seriously as I did while reading it but oh well - what can I say, I am a hater at heart.

I don’t really have anything to say much about why I gave it 1.5 stars other than the fact it was readable and I finished it quick (thankfully); and that Elle M. Drew didn’t make Declan into some steretoypical “this-generation-is-ruining-everything-and-is-so-lazy” boomer-esque vampire as authors usually do by ridiculing anything modern, like the use of technology “destroying” physical literature. Declan comments on the accessibility of devices allowing him to read anything but merely prefers the feeling of physical books in his hands (as most people do!). So phew - we dodged a bullet there.

Below is also one of the more enjoyable excerpts I liked from the novella:

“You are giving me the gift of your time, which is a fleeting thing, I imagine, so I am grateful for it.”

Rosamund smiled up at him again, somehow brighter than before, and she took his arm, her small hand tucked against his forearm. He had not bothered to push down his sleeves, to cover up his bare skin, and he was glad of it, glad that he could feel the softness of her touch on his own skin. She was softer than silk, softer than lace, and he knew it was likely oil from working with leather covers. How... divine.

“Time is only fleeting if you feel as though you have been wasting it,” she answered softly. “And I highly doubt an evening with you could ever be considered such.”

Oh, such a sweet creature... if only she knew.

Now onto the bad.

Listen: I’m not one to hate on a female MC. Rosamund’s obsessed with Declan’s writing, so she found an opportunity to meet her favourite author and she took it. We love a character who knows what she wants and gets it. But her inability to inquire further into the man she JUST MET (only knows of him via his writing btw) and WILLINGLY goes into his house on their first day of meeting got me shaking my head. Like GIRL? Listen, she was willing to risk it all for the D. I get it. I been there too, girl. But for an educated archivist, she is really dumb. Also Rosamund asking Declan how old he is only after he fucked her to death like ma’am?? Where were these questions 18 hours ago? YOU DIDN’T EVEN KNOW HIS REAL NAME.

Both Declan’s and Rosamund’s “i-love-books-more-than-people” schtick got old really fast. For Declan, seeing Rosamund was love at first sight and unfortunately, I was not a fan of the insta-love. While I'm not totally against this trope, this novella just didn't do it justice. Rosamund’s attraction to Declan did not really make sense to me, either. Like I get it: he’s her favourite author, essentially a celebrity in her perspective, and she then basically stalked (her words, not mine!) him. Then the rest is history - happily ever after. There was no depth to their attraction or connection. Everything felt unbelievable - even their fucking had no substance.

An angel dies anytime a smut scene mentions that his dick was destined for her body because it fits so perfectly. Remember that, authors.

Also something hilarious I’ve noticed is that being a vampire in this world makes you ugly as hell. The author really said ‘if you’re ugly as a human, not even vampirism can fix that sorry not sorry!’ I know Elle M. Drew probably wanted to establish this to show that Declan loved Rosamund no matter what and that he loved her in human form prior to turning BUT ?? Declan is over TWO THOUSAND YEARS OLD. If Rosamund (a former 30-something-year-old woman) as a vampire still has her coffee-stained teeth, dandruff-ridden greasy hair and sun-damaged skin spots, I refuse to believe Declan looks anything as enamouringly beautiful we, as readers, must assume him to be. THEY DID NOT HAVE SHOWERS TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO. NOR ANYTHING REMOTELY HYGIENIC. Could you imagine how rotting his teeth must be. Aside from his major library, a significant portion of his two thousand years' worth of income must have gone into dentures.

Also for a book where the female-MC is a plus-sized character, the only evidence we have of that is the illustration of her from the cover and the author's dedication (“You saw the cover featuring a plus size girl..."). The novella really lacked any description describing her as plus-sized. I'm not sure what the reason behind this was, or maybe I've accidentally missed something?

Anyway, TLDR: it was meh. Characters and their relationship were extremely one-dimensional.

This is so freaking cute, fluffy, steamy, and funny!! I was smiling like an idiot the entire time I read it.

The MMC is an ancient vampire who is completely obsessed with books!

He meets our human FMC at a used bookstore and immediately feels drawn to her. She’s enchanting to him for several reasons, but mostly because of how passionate she is about books.

He decides that he wants to make her his companion and spoil her with his wealth, pleasure, and books forever 😭😭

And, naturally, he has a giant manor with a Beauty and the Beast style library that he shows her to sweep her off her feet.

If you’re a bookish girly and you love vampires as much as I do, you’re going to love it and get such a kick out of it!

My favorite parts of this story was the giant library, the funny quotes about their love of books, the nod to Twilight at the end, and the way the MMC spoke like he had been alive for hundreds of years.

I was also so impressed by the writing. It was very well written and the tone of the story felt sensual even before you got to the spicy scenes.

This is one of my favorite vampire books now 😍

3.5⭐️ for this quirky novella, written with bibliophiles in mind. Rose & Declans' story was just the light-hearted read I needed, but their characters didn't really draw me in 100%? At times, the characters' language confused me, and what's with all the ellipsis? I did love the setting, though. Declans library? Yes, please! Overall, it is an enjoyable, short, and atmospheric read.

Puntuacion: 2.5/5

I liked the style, it was fun and spicy.
However it was too insta for my taste, especially because the author had the opportunity to install a working relationship (he could have offered her to catalog his library). It would have given them time to spend more time together while bonding over their passion.

Nerdy, quirky and cute. Suoer quick read too, and I think it's only fair that we get the adventures of Rose and Declan as they explore a whole new world.

The characters and dialogue feel a little stiff? It was really hard to feel anything other than uncomfortable during their first encounter which kind of killed it for me.

There just isn't really any sort of spark between the two main characters nor is there anything really all that interesting around us to distract us from that lack of connection until they can build something more solid.

Ngl, this book dragged for me. A lot of the dialogue was stilted and repetitive. I appreciated the love of archiving, book collecting, and reading tho. Rosamund was confident and utterly devoted to her craft, and to finding her fave author. Declan was just as devoted and lonely. They fit together well. I wanted more background on Rosamund — like who are the important people in her life? It had some potential but it fell short.

Spice: 3/5

More of a 2.5⭐️ to be fair. Because while I still hate the « insta-love » trope and while I’m not a huge fan of vampires, it was short and entertaining. He gave me vampire!Joe Goldberg vibes at the beginning in that library, but then you find out she’s not so innocent in this either. I know they joke about it in the novella, but his library WAS my favorite thing about him which say a lot in my humble opinion - and she wasn’t exactly the best character either, but oh well. Kept my attention for a solid 40minutes at least, although I’ve already forgotten a few details like their names.

Someone please revoke this author's access to the ellipsis. What an odd novella. It's a fun erotica, but some things made it less enjoyable:

Weird juxtaposition between MMC's overly formal diction and FMC's stream of consciousness.

At points the descriptions just never stopped. It felt like things were described in three different (redundant) ways.

But truly...I hope you like ellipses...because they're...absolutely everywhere.
