Since birth, 20-year-old Dessa has been trained by her mother to hunt creatures called Soulless, who sacrifice humans for other-worldly powers. Instead of having a normal life with friends and school and dates, she’s stuck killing creatures for money to support herself. But then Dessa wakes from the dead. Her mother killed her, and her deadbeat dad has appeared out of nowhere to resurrect Dessa. But he didn’t do it out of the kindness of his heart: he wants Dessa to kill her mom’s new arm candy, a Soulless more powerful than any creature Dessa has hunted before. She flees town in hopes of starting a normal life for herself, but her parents track her down. When her mom kills the one person she ever loved as family, Dessa realizes that there’s no escape without consequences.
