My world turned to shades of grey as I squared my shoulders and turned around. The woman with the short, dark hair and the blue scarf was the only source of color in the coffee shop. I seemed to glide across the floor until I found myself standing by her table. She had been stunning from across the room; up close she dazzled. Suddenly, there was Sophie..... On the surface, Jensy Willett appears to have it all: good friends, a storied basketball career, a great job, and most important, the love of her life, Sophie Barnes. But there is a secret in Jensy Willett's past that she will not share. Not even with her beloved Sophie. That vow of silence will have far-reaching ramifications when a chance encounter results in a disastrous decision. A decision that will tear at the fabric of Jensy and Sophie's relationship and send them spiraling out of control. Can their relationship be saved?
I am a midwesterner transplanted to the southwest about eleven years ago.
During my working career I was an English teacher, Special Education teacher, school administrator and coach (basketball, softball, volleyball, track and field).
Retirement has allowed me to the more artistic side of myself. I enjoy photography (and reworking my photos in abstract works of art), drawing (geometric drawings designed with ultra-fine makers), and writing.
In 2019 I took an idea and several separate chapters I had written and decided to write my first novel. The result was "The Touch of Her Voice." It is a lesbian romance/relationship novel that follows the characters of Jensy Willett and Sophie Barnes.
It is to be the first novel in a trilogy. The second and third volumes ("The Sound of Her Smile" and "Taste of her Silence") are as yet to be published.

Exhilarating read! So awestruck that Ms. Scott have continued telling this very charming, captivating and well written story with this book #2 in the 'Jensy Willett' series. Can't wait for the conclusion and final book #3 A highly recommended book and series!!
Book 1 of this series highlighted how good people in a loving relationship can still hurt each other. It’s an emotional barn burner that has to be read prior to Book 2 or nothing will make sense. The new story continues the healing process of Sophie and Jensy’s relationship. They again face challenges that would knock a horse over but those conflicts kept me turning pages.
I admire when authors take time to build their bookworld regardless of genre. But I’m even more fascinated when a writer takes the time to carve out characters with so many life details that the people seem real. Jensy and Sophie are so fully drawn that it’s impossible to not feel their joy and sorrow with them. I appreciate my gr friends whose good reviews put this book on my shortlist to read because it was well worth my heart’s turmoil. I’ve heard that a Book 3 is in the works and I can’t even imagine the outcome because the author is awfully good at twists and turns. Also, there are plenty of great supporting characters waiting in the wings. I highly recommend this series.
Another exhilarating read and once again it was really tough trying to put the book down… I’m just missing Sophie’s POV on the whole ordeal…No, not just the ordeal but the overall story to be frank. Yes, there were some snippets of her perspective but truth be told, that was just not enough for me. I want to know Sophie’s thoughts, right from the beginning of Book 1 to the end of Book 2. Moving on to the last book of the series!
It had been a while since I had read book one and this one has been on my TBR forever. I kept reading other books… so when I started it the other day I could only remember bits and pieces from the first book.
I was liking book 2 and thinking what a wonderful relationship Jensy and Sophie had. How kind and thoughtful Sophie was. How smart and beautiful she was. And Jensy was a unique person who had lead a charmed life with her coaching and photography. Also I was wishing to have a perfect sole mate in my life just like these two were for each other.
And I was waiting for the angst to start or for the relationship to break…and wow I was surprised and never saw the story go in the direction it went.
I highly recommend this series and book one is a must read first. Sara Scott is a gifted storyteller and if there is a book three I’ll read it as soon as it comes out.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Sara Scott has done it again. This is the second book in the series and it is just as fabulous, angsty and beautiful as the first.
Jensy and Sophie’s story continues and just as in the first instalment their lives are far from perfect, but the love that they have for each other is still as strong and unshakable.
This author excels and creating compelling and real dialogue between the characters. Scott writes in first person and she has upped her game in this book! Seeing and feeling everything through Jensy’s eyes was both heartbreaking but believable. My chest hurt and my eyes stung with tears.
I don’t want to spoil the storyline but if you’ve read the first book then you will know that the start of this book is not all sunshine and roses, but Scott manages to resolve the issues that occur in The Touch of Her Voice in a relatable and steady pace. I loved being on that journey with Jens and Sophie and shared their triumphs and set backs.
There’s a instant in this book that might trigger some readers involving a school and a gun so please keep that in mind.
This book kept me up late and had me itching to read it as soon as a awoke. I brilliant second novel for Sara Scott and I can’t wait for book three.
This continuation of the Jensy Willett story picks up as Jensy and her partner Sophie attempt to recover from something that threatens their once seemingly perfect relationship.
Without giving spoilers, Scott knows how to ramp up readers' emotions and I found myself holding my breath again throughout this book wanting so desperately for the perfect couple to overcome the events of book one and come out of it stronger on the other side. While they slowly work towards that goal, more significant challenges present themselves that will test them to their limits.
I love these books. They kill me, but in the best way. Sophie's character is about as ideal as they come. I'm completely in love with her. Jensy is a very layered character whose pride and determined self reliance sometimes works against her. But she's brave and strong and I felt myself rooting for her every step of the way. Both characters get under your skin and stay there.
If you haven't read these yet - do. I don't know where the final book will take us - God knows Scott has many twists up her sleeve - but I'm absolutely going along for the ride.
At the end of the first book in this trilogy, events had happened that threatened to end Jensy and Sophie's 13 year relationship. The first part of this book allows them to slowly rebuild their relationship and lives. So sailing along without too much really happening, a big event at around 2/3 completely changes the entire story and was truly one of the most engaging writing I have read in a long time. Having had a life changing event in my own life a few years ago, it really hit me hard, but was so well handled by Ms Scott. I'm giving this one another five stars as I did the first. A class writer and great love story. Recommended.
“Many events in life have a certain predictability based on past experience. But this was not one of those events.” She spoke slowly, leaning forward intently so that I would pay close attention to her words. “There was no way you could have known or guessed or anticipated that this would happen.”
The Touch of Her Voice, first of the Jensy Willet and Sophie Barnes series, is still one of my favorite books of 2022.
That’s why, when I heard that The Sound of Her Smile had just been released, I rushed to buy it and read it.
This means that if you want to read this book, you first need to make your acquaintance with Jensy and Sophie through The Touch of Her Voice. I promise, you will love all the Jensyventures it contains.
The Sound of Her Smile is divided into two parts, the first starts where The Touch of Her Voice ended, with us cheering for Jensy and Sophie, to them once again together. The first part also serves to give some closure to all that happened to Jensy and Sophie's lives in book one. So you'll see again some of the characters appearing in The Touch of Her Voice, even those I'm sure you hated the most. Some great adventures are ahead of them...
This series is different from the usual ones I’m accustomed to, as the main characters are still the main characters in the second and third installments. I thought that at some point I would lose interest, and that once the climax had been reached, there wouldn’t be anything else to capture my willingness to go further with the reading. I was so wrong! Oh, was I wrong!
This book has a plot twist that will awake all your senses and spike your angst once more till the very end. I don’t want to say more not to spoil it for anyone. It touched me personally, for many reasons.
Life is never that simple, is it? Sometimes you have to hit the bottom to get back. Sometimes life will change you, and it's up to you to keep on moving.
My heart goes to Jensy and Sophie, and I can’t wait to read the third and last novel of the series!
I recommend this to all who have loved The Touch of Her Voice and the beautiful writing of Sara Scott. Can’t wait for my friends to read it, so we can go over the plot twist!
Reading that book without reading the first one doesn’t make any sense. I strongly advise reading the books in order. After the first book, Scott left a fragile couple behind who accepted they don't want to live without each other. They work slowly to find their way back to each other. But again, it's made with sensitivity, time, and incredible realism. Like in the first book, the reader feels privileged to share Jensy and Sophie's intimacy. There were some lengths, but then, the big, shocking twist comes. The writing in the first person really exacerbated the pain and trauma. It can be hard to read. The writing is incredibly immersive yet delicate. Sara Scott is an excellent storyteller, making it impossible for me not to wait to dive into book 3 right away.
A lot like the first book Jensy and Sophie are put to the test with so much angst and life to work through. Picking up where the first book left off they had to work through the affair that each one had. Working things through like adults that had many conversations and worked through things.
Then come the trials from Sophie’s family, and the craziness at Jensy’s school. You go through all the emotions on their journey and wonder how one couple could go through so much. Even with all the struggles/challenges the love that they have with each other is something we should all strive for. So good!
Jensy and Sophie are working through the difficulties in their relationship to try and find a way to make it work. With everything they have been through and new challenges, the path isn’t without drama and disruption as they explored their feelings and boundaries for the future of their relationship.
It was great to be back with Jensy and Sophie after reading the first book in the series, The Touch Of Her Voice. They’d already been through so much, so if you haven’t read the first book you should before starting with this second story as it provides the context to understand why Jensy and Sophie are in their current situation and it helps to explain the emotions fuelling their actions and decisions. Jensy has made mistakes and what I love about her is her honesty with herself about them, and the way she accepts responsibility.
My heart always ends up breaking for Sophie. She loves Jensy but even in this part of their story she was struggling with their past. However she really did try harder this time to understand and work with Jensy to make their relationship something more because she knew they had a special connection. Once they’d worked through a few, the story had more happy and cute scenes as they worked on strengthening their relationship and really embracing all the happiness surrounding them, but it wasn’t without further drama and complications that twisted the story in a most unexpected way. It never seems to be plain sailing for these two, but what greater test for such a love!
A really heartfelt and emotional romance with characters who have a truly unique relationship
A delightful tingle of anticipation; that's what I felt when reading the first few lines of The Sound of Her Smile - that welcoming feeling of picking up where you left off.
And in a nutshell that's exactly what this book does, it's a continuation of Sophie Barnes and Jensy Willett's story (it having begun in The Touch of Her Voice), a couple who despite everything in their pasts and irrespective of their present day troubles know that they are meant for one another.
As per the title - The Sound of Her Smile - is very much about Jensy finding her way back to and re- gaining the privilege of being privy to the sound of Sophie's smile; in all of its guises.
With their relationship in shreds and Jensy having started something which she never dreamed Sophie would play a part in ending, neither are sure how to repair their once solid relationship, when so much has been lost to the turbulent waters of infidelity. And just when there looks to be light at the end of the tunnel, a harrowing tragedy threatens to not only permanently tear Sophie and Jensy apart but also wreck their newly built foundations.
Is Jensy strong enough to find her way back to her everything, her Sophie, no matter the terror she now fears lies around every corner? Can Sophie hold onto hope for the both of them, even when Jensy places her at arms length?
As with the first book, The Sound of Her Smile is beautifully written and an absolute joy to read. I adore the way Sara Scott has chosen to tell Jensy and Sophie's story. It is a patchwork of moments and candid snapshots told in the first person, which when taken as a whole chronicles the entirety of the couples lives - from their accomplishments to their struggles; apart and together.
If you look closely, you might perceive Sophie and Jensy's story for what (I believe) it truly is - a brutally honest and emotionally raw, yet equally elegant telling of the most imperfectly perfect love, relationship and life. A story befitting the reality of the flawed nature of romantic love. And whilst a less than perfect love story may not be every readers cup of tea, I continue to find Jensy and Sophie's story, touchingly, achingly real. Steeped in trials and tribulations their love which was once fresh and glorious, and seemingly flawless, is now marred by life's trajectory. Nevertheless that doesn't mean their love for one another is inferior to what it once was. Rather, it is that realness of what love once was, now is, and can be which I feel Scott seeks to tell (so very, very well might i add) in The Sound of Her Smile. Scott has an exceptional talent for emotive storytelling, throughout every heart wrenching or heartwarming moment, her writing never fails to ensure you feel every ounce of what you are reading.
I distinctly remember upon reaching the end of The Touch of Her Voice being desperate for the release of the next book in the series, and now, at the end of The Sound of Her Smile, I'm already (not so) patiently waiting for the next part of this couple's journey. Over the course of two books I've grown to truly cherish Jensy and Sophie's story and I genuinely look forward to where ever Sara Scott takes them next.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
A realistic love story with great characters and depth of emotions (did someone say angst?) but not a lot of a story beyond the everyday life of a couple (plot twists and peak events do not count, I want a story in between). Some aspects of this book are so good that they almost make up for the flaws in the storytelling.
First of all, this book starts with a well-established couple so we don't need a meet-cute and falling-in-love process. They are already in love and the majority of the book is dedicated to their life together, how they struggle through the mundane and the routine and get to the promised land of romantic moments in life. Which brings me to my second point - the MCs are very well crafted. They are beautiful characters, flawed but honest, true to themselves, and willing to work for their relationship, but they make mistakes. In short, they are realistic. This was the best part of the book! Another part of the book that was good was the idea behind the storytelling style. When you lay out the everyday life of a couple in detail, taking the time to build up the scene and the world around it, getting the sense of the time and place right is almost easy. However, this idea works well only if you add a fleshed-out story to keep the reader interested. I found that part of the storytelling was extremely realistic and gave much substance to the world-building, but it wasn't very interesting. It didn't hold me at the edge of my chair, eager to know what was next. I feel I was being "told" a lot but not "shown" enough...
Yes, there was a plot twist here and a complication there, and the story did move along. But the pacing was just not doing it for me :(
I have recovered enough from book 1 now to be able to read book 2. Well at least the 1st book has stopped haunting my dreams. Was I foolish to potentially reignite it with book 2? The inability to think of anything else other than a blank, dark space that seemed to inhabit my head for what felt like months? Only time will tell I guess. For reference I read the 1st book in January 2024! In order for it to make proper sense and understand the depth of emotion contained within the Jensy Willett books, you do have to have read book 1. I think without it book 2 would not have the same meaning or impact. You could read it as a standalone as it explains things as it goes. But why would you? You wouldn't experience the emotional upheaval, the heart felt sorrow, guilt and numbness with them or the elation when things go well. The ability to create these emotions make the story into so much more than words on a page. It is set soon after the 1st book ends. Jensy and Sophie are trying to figure out a way forward. I found I was reading it waiting for something terrible to happen. Each new character that was introduced made me consider was this person going to introduce chaos? Will they bring trauma? And then when the moment comes it isn't something Jensy has done - it's all perception. Although there is a lot of Jensy emotion in this book - there is also a lot of Sophie emotion too - in a way that is perhaps more relatable.
There's a lot of knowledge on the page as well. Or research. Photography, coaching, corporate life, etc.
There is also a lot of emotion in this book. It didn't hit me the same as the 1st though. Maybe this is because it involved a shooting and we don't have guns here in the same way as the USA? But it's still very good. I recommend it. And will read the 3rd one soon.
The Touch of Her Voice, first of the Jensy Willet and Sophie Barnes series, is still one of my favorite books of 2022.

My heart goes to Jensy and Sophie, and I can’t wait to read the third and last novel of the series!
I recommend this to all who have loved The Touch of Her Voice and the beautiful writing of Sara Scott. Can’t wait for my friends to read it, so we can go over the plot twist!
While this was well-written and emotional, I struggled with two things. First, the structure: much happiness and scenes from an ordinary life for a long time, and then late-breaking drama. As dumb as it sounds, I started getting tired of the happiness, because I knew something bad was coming. They had made it past the major issue from the last book, and not gotten to the major issue for this book, so it felt like just killing time waiting for the drama to roll around.
And second, due to the nature of the late drama, it felt to me like Jenny didn’t have enough agency in overcoming the issue. It was as much a matter of waiting for things to change as her actually changing things. Which, sure, may be realistic under the circumstances, but for me, isn’t as enjoyable to read about? It’s not like there was nothing she could do, and I applauded the steps she took, but ultimately it felt like a happy outcome wasn’t up to her (or Sophie), which was tough.
Bottom line, I ended up liking this less that the first and third books. That’s not to say it wasn’t well done, just, I think, not the greatest fit for me.
This is the second in the Jensy/Sophie series and while I was excited to see that there was a sequel to one of the better books I read in 2022, I also don't really see the purpose. This series I can't really say have much in the way of character development or a story plot, but it was interesting to read about how a "perfect" relationship can withstand an incident of cheating. The "perfect" relationship got on my nerves in both of these books; with the exceptions of the cheating in the first book towards the end and the second book's own "big event" (ALSO towards the end), it's page in and page out about how much Jensy and Sophie love each other. That's all well and good, but it's also not terribly interesting after awhile. I liked the note of hope book 1 left off on; while it wasn't a "happily ever after", there was a sense that there would be a reconciliation. Frankly, I would have rather left them fully at that point, book 2 is a series of meandering vignettes in the course of their relationship but it just doesn't feel necessary to tell us more.
The Sound of Her Smile continues the first-person Jensy Willett introduction, The Touch of Her Voice.
Author Sara Scott features Jensy Willett, a former college basketball player and current high school counselor, basketball coach, and art photographer, and Sophie Barnes, a corporate attorney, who have been in a decade-plus relationship. Their life together has been upended due to Jensy’s predictable bad decision and Sophie’s equally damaging reaction to it.
What follows is Scott’s carefully plotted plan for their repairing their relationship and moving forward.
This is a slow-paced story with wonderful scenes of love and romance — as well as additional devastating events for Jensy and Sophie to work through.
The Sound of Her Smile isn’t a light, feel good romp, but it is very worthwhile reading. It’s an emotionally mature, satisfying book offering an engaging love story, lovable well crafted characters, and valuable ideas for navigating relationship upheavals.
Wow another emotional roller coaster in this second book in the series of Jensy & Sophie’s journey.
The rawness of true reality of everyday life was mentioned & I cried & felt the angst in it. There were certain parts in the book when my heart felt like it broke as as the turn of event happened. That feeling of connection when an event happens in a book is something that keeps me reading & I love how Sara Scott has made me get drawn into it all.
The struggles are real and events that take place in this part of journey I could relate to some of it, which was more heart felt & a lot at times I cried (a good cry) that was needed. I love being able to connect with the characters.
I can’t say this enough, but this is the type of book that I would re-read over and over again as it is so well written & for me the angst of emotions o go through makes me feel apart of their journey.
I can definitely recommend this book for those readers who need that connection with both characters and everyday real life events happening in the world.
Sara Scott has given us a gem of a tale, exquisitely plotted and written. The MCs, Jensy and Sophie are captivating in their love - it’s the kind of love I want. And when there’s pain for them, it’s visceral for me, so well-written is this book. I felt drawn in by the story of Sophie’s relationship with William, her father, who never showed her a drop of love, or caring; and then a shocking revelation by her mother. And for Jensy, the pure joy when the school basketball team she coaches achieves their penultimate goal; followed too closely for Jensy by pain, despair, torment, and hopelessness. It just has to work out for Jensy and Sophie … it just has to! A fantastic book!
I read this on KU. I loved it, but not as much as the first book.
About the first third of the book was about Jensy and Sophie trying to come to grips with what happened to their relationship, trying to find a way to heal the hurt. The writing was just so good. I felt the pain.
After the healing, the book seemed to turn into everyday life’s activities. I had to scratch my head, feeling that the story had become Jensy’s journal.
There was a major incident that rocked their world and they were, again, faced with rebuilding their lives.
I really loved and recommend this just because of how human it was and how beautiful the writing was. Sara Scott really knows how to communicate emotions and bring her characters to life.
Another Heartbreaker and Heartwarming Continuation!
I need to comment on this writer and her followup to what I considered an excellent debut. This continuation was just as heartbreaking and again just has the warmth and love that pulls the reader in until it’s conclusion. Jensy is still a much worthy lead and Sophie is a constant in her and their lives that just make you happy with what they had to overcome. Once again the supporting cast is needed again big time for them both. There is just something so simple as to have a love that goes so deep both ways. Sara Scott again has captured and pulled me in the Jensy Willett saga….
These two books are so lovely and involving the kind that you are reluctant to finish. So well written and that I feel I would love to be friends with Jensy and Sophie, although you would be always on the outside of such a loving relationship. I laughed and cried so much reading them that I need an emotional break. Descriptions of scenes are very realistic and you simply can't stop thinking about them and want more. I suspect there may be more which I will welcome. Thank you for two wonderful books.
Well. I cried throughout most of the book. Such an emotional journey. A beautiful love story. I made the mistake of reading the summary for the third book and I am not ready for it. I will push through because I want to know what happens but mentally I am not prepared. I warned my wife. I will be a mess.
