Jakob Kestrel has a nightmare. And it's coming for him.

Jakob Kestrel escaped his homeland looking for a fresh start. He hoped to leave behind the blood-curdling memories that tortured him in the night.

But the murderous nightmare he escaped is now hunting him. Captured by slavers, his and his father’s chances of escape virtually disappear. Making use of his wits and what little training he has as a Magus, Jakob will have to find a way to save them both.

Meanwhile, across the Territories there are rumors of a dark mist creeping down from the north. With it comes a violent death. No one can see the monsters that hide within the fog. No one knows how to kill them.

With the Governors focused on building their own power in New Caledonia, the already forsaken villagers are forced into hiding to protect themselves.

Yet a group of strangers on separate paths refuse to flee. They want to fight, and Jakob may just have the answers they need ...

Growing up in New York when I was a kid, I used to haunt the science fiction and fantasy bookstore in Yonkers, searching for the epic fantasy stories that I loved to read. When I exhausted all my options, I started writing my own stories, never realizing that one day I would publish them.

As you read my stories, you’ll notice certain themes and I like to carry them over from one book to the next. I always include adventure, humor, a few twists, a bunch of fights (magic and steel), and a little romance, along with a few good monsters. But for me it always starts with engaging characters. Because without characters who grow and change as they seek to overcome the challenges placed before them, as they seek to move forward, the story can’t move forward.

In particular, I like to focus on the reluctant hero, a man or a woman not seeking glory, but rather seeking to help others and challenge the evil plaguing the world – a world that I’ve created, The Realms of the Talent and the Curse. They need to learn how to believe in themselves before they can do what’s demanded of them. A personal journey that all of us experience, often more than once in our lifetimes, from lack of belief to belief in the self.

To learn more, check out the Amazon series pages for my current epic fantasy series -- The Sylvan Chronicles, The Tales of Caledonia, and The Tales of the Territories -- and my first foray into urban fantasy, The Fallen Knight Series. (Many of the books in these series have been or are Amazon #1 Bestsellers in various categories as well as #1 New Releases.)

This latest release by Peter Wacht is quite a different style to his previous works. No longer fighting the Ghoules, new enemies have materialised, and we see the character expansion of some familiar names along with a whole host of new faces. The New Territories are awaiting colonisation, and this is the beginning of the story of how that happens. I’m sure that there will be many more books to come in this series and I look forward to reading them all. There is never a dull moment, and it takes a bit of concentration to keep up with the politics of the new world. One or two deliciously evil characters and a handful of heroes. It’s worth spending some time keeping tabs on who’s who.
Genuinely a great read and well written.

Ok I haven't finished this but thought that my "early" review might be helpful. I've decided to stop reading because although this is the start of a new series there are so many references,in the first few chapters alone, about what has gone before, I presume in a previous series, that I can't get in to it. If it's meant to stand alone (?) then that's what it should be, only 2 MCs met so far & nearly all of it is backstory so much so that I feel I can't continue forward as I'm missing half of the tale!

Slow going, but still fantastic

If you want a fast paced fantasy, this isn't for you.
If you enjoy slow, well written character arcs and world building, then you must read this! It has everything; creepy a$$ supernatural fog that hides creepy a$$ supernatural beings, pirates, bad a$$ woman, sea dragons, treachery and sooo much more that makes this an epic read, even if it does leave us on a cliffhanger and so many questions unanswered, has me scrambling to grab book 2!

The adventure expands as our heroes look for a new start in the Territories.

Not everything is as it appears and much is dragons even by evil. Multiple story lines are developing to define present conditions and plots for control - slavers, pirates, monsters, greed, and pride. Who will win?

The first book in a new series by Peter Wacht. This book was fast paced, action filled and filled with intrigue and suspense throughout the story. The characters were amazing and well thought out. The storyline was captivating. And the world building was excellent! I absolutely recommend reading this book! I am ready for the next book!

Missing pages

I have read all books in the series before this one, Death on the Burnt Ocean, and thoroughly enjoyed all of them. I enjoyed this story but was disappointed when I found that every forth or fifth page was blank.

very good

A great beginning to the saga, I really enjoyed the story of characters I have enjoyed learning about in the previous series, embarking on new adventures with new terrors, villains, and warriors

This book, despite a very interesting opening chapter and a few moments sprinkled through the book, did not work for me. I will not be continuing with the series.

Travel to the new Territories isn't all that it seems. Lots of Mysterious happenings Aislinn, Bryen and his companions have encountered a few unexplainable events and not knowing what to expected when they get across the Burnt Ocean. Talia and Isana company is growing but there are some not too happy about it. Dougal and his son Jakob's since they have arrived in the Territories isn't quite what they expected. Lots of new creatures and challenges. Looking forward to book 2 to see where it takes them all.

This is the first book from this author that I did not love. But I am hopeful for the next installment.
