Becoming Bionic

Rate this book
Elara has been stuck in a wheelchair most of her life thanks to a degenerative disease. When her parents—both experts in their fields—offer to replace her legs with robotic ones, she agrees despite misgivings.

Upon waking from the procedure, she finds out she's been unconscious for six months. Her parents are missing, the bunker she's been living in has been destroyed, and the world is losing an epic battle against Fade, a rogue AI. It seems unlikely she'll get a chance to catch up on The Bachelor now.

Her newfound ability to walk is an accomplishment that pales in comparison to all that's gone wrong. Her father seems to be the key to either defeating Fade or making the AI unstoppable. As she unravels the mystery of Fade's intent, she makes a few alarming discoveries about herself. Like maybe she's had more than just her legs replaced.

Fans of Cinder might enjoy this light, character-driven sci-fi.

Suspenseful and Well-Written . . .

Elara Clay has not had a simple life. She has a degenerative disease that has kept her in a wheelchair the majority of her life. She is given the opportunity of replacing her legs to give her the ability to walk on her own. She ultimately decides to go with that choice. A drop of water drips on her face and she hears water dripping around her. She seems to be alone, however. She calls to her dad and mom, but no one answers. She pushes herself off the bed and stands on her new legs. Looking around the strange room she is in, she sees a soggy note on the counter, but it makes no sense. She finds a walkie-talkie and tries to reach someone. At last her Uncle Robbie answers and tells her he will get her out of that safe room that has no doors or windows. But he will first have to clear away the rubble. And when he gets inside, he has many things to tell her.

She learns that her surgery was 6 months ago, and this is the beginning of a major adjustment to her life. They are currently at war. Her parents have been abducted by automatons under the control of a destructive AI named Fade. Her last memory of Fade was that it was the AI built to run the defense network. But something went wrong. Her parents hid her in this safe room which saved her life. Are her parents still alive? If there is any hope of defeating the rogue AI, Elara must enter into the battle. But she is only one person… and then she discovers there is more to what was done to her than just her new legs! Will it be enough to give her a chance to fight back against Fade and save the world? Was this what her father had wanted?

The story line is well-written and the tension the author creates feels real as the military and Elara try to avoid discovery by whatever is after them in the tunnels. Elara did get on my nerves quite frequently, but then I remember this is all new to her and she lets her mind get easily distracted. Grab your copy and enjoy this suspenseful story to see how it all resolves.

Gah! I absolutely adore this story! From the first moments showing a young girl (Elara) struggling with the limits of her disability and all throughout her enlightening and fascinatingly adventurous journey to coming to terms with her identity, I was enthralled. The story is sweet and the romance slow without being boring. This book is more about Ellie herself than it is about her relationship/s and I like that. Because life IS about how we perceive ourselves before it is about how we interact with others. The scifi/engineering perspective is extremely well written and does not come across as too “over your head” spouting of science jargon. I could not find a single thing that I disliked about this story. Other books are going to have a tough time kicking it out of my top spot for 2023.

Zoe Blessing does a great job in creating a great scifi young adult novel. It was exactly what I was looking for from the description. I enjoyed the way the characters were written and glad it worked well overall. I loved the scifi elements going on and it did everything that I was looking for. Can't wait to read more from Zoe Blessing.

This is a really interesting book, well written and full of thought provoking ideas and situations. The main female character has a lot to deal with from the first page and works her way through it whilst living in a dystopian world full of danger. There's a tense, action filled finale which was really satisfying and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole book.

I was immediately drawn into the storyline and loved every moment of it! Honestly, I would of loved more background knowledge about FADE, but still found this to be a good read. Hope there will be a book 2!!

I was hooked by the second page. This isn’t my typical genre, but this book has encouraged me to try new reads. I would definitely read anything this author publishes.
