Losing Sight of the Moon

Rate this book
A university dropout quits his job for a spontaneous five-week trip to the United States. Armed with a pass that allows travel on any Greyhound bus in the country, he witnesses the majesty of Niagara Falls, cheers on the Giants in San Francisco, and hikes the Grand Canyon at sunset.

But this is far from the trip of a lifetime.

After coming close to suicide, it’s a last-ditch attempt at giving life another chance. In a journey spanning the breadth of the country, he almost freezes to death camping in Yosemite, brushes with the law on the Mexican border, and eats a few handfuls of trail mix as daily sustenance. But through all this he receives kindness and generosity from myriad strangers who, without realising it, inspire him to keep going.

Losing Sight of the Moon is a painfully honest travel memoir that is as much a celebration of humanity as an account of battling depression.

Losing sight of the moon is a beautifully written travel memoir that explores one man's internal battle with depression as he travels across the US.

I'm not one for reading memoirs, but I must admit this very quickly drew me in with its engaging story and wild adventures, like exploring the wilds of North America, getting caught by the police on the borders of Mexico and camping out in wild moutains.

Not only does this explore the personal journey of the author, but it also highlights the incredible struggles with depression and the loneliness it brings.

But what surprised me most was the people that were met and the kindness they brought.

This isn't just about a journey to America, nor escapism, or the struggle for identity, but it's about humanity and how kind and generous people can be to those that need it.
