A Song of Death

Rate this book
Purgatory is a haven or so Elaine Tormelin believed.

Aya Sinclair swore never to protect a witch, but fate demanded otherwise.

Forced into an uneasy alliance, Elaine is swept into a dangerous mission, a growing conspiracy and a fight to claim the home she hungers for. All the while, she finds herself unexpectedly drawn to her newfound ‘protector’ who may or may not want her dead.

Accompanied by a prickly demon and a protective werewolf, the fight has only begun…and it's about to get bloody.

4/5⭐️ 1.5/5🌶️
This story was such a joy to read.
The LGBTQ+ rep, the found family, the enemies to lovers. I literally had so much fun and absolutely flew through it, I could not put this book down.
The plot was gripping and action packed, but in the same breath it gave me cozy fantasy vibes. Aya, Elaine, Sabra and Tobias are all great in their own ways and I’m excited to learn more about their histories and watch them progress as the stories continue. The tension between Aya and Elaine was… really really good. I was rooting for them the whole time, and once things began to heat up… it was great. The couple of spicy scenes were great as well, they weren’t super graphic but they still brought a bit of heat and sizzle. The magic system was explained pretty well also, a little vague at times but still detailed and not overwhelming.
There were some moments that felt a little rushed for me, and it felt like maybe a few times things were resolved without much of an explanation, and I was left with some questions.
Overall, this book was such a fun time and I am really looking forward to picking up book 2 when it’s released. Remember to check TWs before you pick this up as well.
I am incredibly grateful received an ARC for this one.

Exactly what I have been wanting to read.

The only reason this isn't 5 stars is because it wasn't long enough and there was no sequel to be read straight away.
For me, this book had everything. A Witch, a demon, a werewolf and goddess'!
A magical system that was easy to get. It read easy enough for me to be able to picture what I'm reading(which can be sometimes hard for me) and the biggest reason as to why I chose to read this and read it in less than 24hours, it's sapphic!!! I have been looking for a good sapphic read and this was a great one for me. 🫠🥰 I fell in love with both Aya and Elaine and their little misfit family.
I loved the mystery, the non-stop action and the 'you hurt my family I'll hurt you worse' feels. Loved every chapter.

A bit of a slow start then turned until an emotional rollercoaster I’m obsessed with ?? Perfect balance of fantasy / wlw enemies to lovers / mystery, but to leave it on a cliffhanger like that!! I need a sequel and I need it now!!

I really enjoyed this book and this story. It was action packed! I really enjoyed the found family trope and i can’t wait to explore more of the relationships of Tobias and Alexios and aya and Elaine. The world building on every page through the story was amazing. I can’t wait to see what the author does with this series. I do hope we get more background of how everyone got to be in purgatory.

Thank you so much to C.M Quinn for allowing me the earc of this book!

Update:
As I am reflecting back on this book I do have to say while I loved the story the ending and not having much closure and it being really chaotic really helps me with saying this was actually like a 3.5 read.

First and foremost t This book was so amazing and gripping to read! I started and just kept reading.
I just loved the build throughout and the way the characters were written it was so detailed.
However some parts felt resolved too quickly or a little rushed however it didn’t take away from the read at all well at least from what I found.
I cannot wait for book two and I was so grateful for being given an arc read for this.
If I had to pick my favourite character I would have to choose aya Sinclair! I don’t wanna spoil it too much but ugh I loved her. I didn’t view her as a monster but hey that’s just me!

This is honestly my favourite sapphic fantasy romance so far!!

I loved being an arc reader for this and am so thankful I got to be! I will be 100% rereading when it’s released 🤩🥰

At first I really liked this book but near the end it just got more and more incoherent and so busy I almoat couldn't keep up with everything going on just to be disappointed that this story provides almost no closure. A sequel is being hinted but there is none?

Spoilers from here on

Ayas powers are a secret but also everyone secretly knows what she is? The szene in the prison to free Tobias' Lover is completely pointless. If Aya is just so powerful she can kill everyone, why didn't they free the one they came for?
Also I what have been helpful if it was told earlier that she isn't trained in her powers properly

I was torn between 3 and 4 stars but was so disappointed in the "epic boss fight" that I had to settle in 3

I got this book as an ARC and I have to say that I really loved it! It’s not typically something I’ve read before (sapphic romance) so it was a new experience for me but I loved the relationship between the main characters, definite enemies to lovers vibes and slow burn so I really enjoyed that. I really enjoyed all the characters and though they were very well written and interesting characters. No one came across as flat or unfinished.

I really enjoyed the lore and world building, felt that the magic system and the world itself was explained really well. Over all it was a really great book and I’d definitely recommend that others check it out.

This book was *everything*. For starters, I loved the world-building and the magical system that was placed into the book-it felt so much real and gave an amazing insight into the world from the very beginning. It didn't leave anything unexplained and as the reader read more and more, more and more details came out about the book. I loved the slow burn of enemies to lovers and I loved how we could see them becoming closer and end up falling in love. While some bits felt a little bit rushed and were resolved too quickly, I found that I hadn't hated it in this book and the book made up for it in the end.

It's definitely worth reading and I look forward to it when it comes out! :)

What an interesting book!! I received this as an ARC read and finally had a moment to focus on it. I must say I loved the world that was portrayed. Enjoyed the characters. Each one is awesome in their own way, and I loved the found family vibe. I can't wait to see if there is more to this story. I need to know how the story plays out! I think the only thing I didn't like was just the overuse of the word "pregnant silence." Other than that, I really enjoyed everything thay C.M. Quinn brought with this book!

My first sapphic fantasy and what a journey to go on!
Found family and a strong female lead is always a strong pull for me and this was written well. Enjoyed the storyline, as well as the character developments.

Update and full review:

All I can say, is that I loved this book and loved the author's way of writing those characters and brining them to life. This book has it all from action, to romance and adventure, it's got found family and LGBTQ rep. The character development throughout the book was so gripping that you just couldn't put it down, the world building was amazingly magical and full of those cozy vibes. This is great for fans of fantasy romance with magical beings and elemental magic, demons and vampires. Aya, Elaine, Sabra and Tobia were great characters, and seeing how their friendship grew throughout the book was so beautiful. The book ends on a major cliffhanger so I cannot wait for the second book, and I definitely want to read anything C.M writes.

I am extremely grateful to have received an ARC from the author to give my honest opinion. Everyone should be reading this book.

A Hard Read

I’ve searched for a prequel but there is none. This book is so rich with backstory it feels like reading two books in one. The characters all have a long history together.

I’ve read 4 books this week, and this one is not as eloquent as I was expecting from the amazing cover. It is a basic quest-style fantasy story with a very DnD feel. After 75%, I had to skim due due to all the grammatical errors, chunks of paragraphs with unclear pronouns for each character, and fruitless side quests.

The characters are great, but it could have been a more impactful story if the second half wasn’t so busy.

4⭐️ This was my intro to Sapphic fantasy and my god it did not disappoint, one of my only grievances was the fact there isn’t a sequel.

The characters felt well fleshed out, and the betrayals felt so real my heart broke.

I’m definitely going to have to read C.M’s other books because this was wonderful.
