Like all great building projects, the world runs on the wisdom of its Architect.
The Bible tells us that the universe—its foundation, inner workings, and relationships—is a carefully ordered place designed for humanity’s good and God’s glory. Too often, however, we attempt life based on our own understanding. This brings chaos, confusion, and consternation. Yet the Wisdom foundation that undergirds the world is so strong, not even the selfish folly of man could destroy our Creator’s peace-filled intentions.
To become wise, we must respond to Wisdom’s call—to dwell in Wisdom’s house. Proverbs is full of practical wisdom on everyday living. Scripture teaches that Christ Himself is our wisdom—our way back to understanding how to build and live as the Architect intended. Those who meditate on the wisdom of Christ will find themselves living in Wisdom’s house once again. You will be refreshed and able to bring life to those around you—just like Christ who breathed life from its start.
Scripture is full of one generous and welcoming invitation after another. In Wisdom’s Call, K. A. Ellis shows us how to claim the asset of wisdom and invites us to experience Jesus Christ—the Wisdom on which our world rests. Ellis calls us to live in God’s magnificent world as people who are wise.
Karen Ellis is the Director of the Center for the Study of the Bible & Ethnicity at Reformed Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia. She holds Master’s degrees from Yale University and Westminster Theological Seminary, and works as an advocate for the global persecuted church, raising awareness and promoting indigenous leadership in countries where Christianity is restricted or repressed. Karen is married to Dr. Carl F. Ellis, Jr.
K. A. Ellis emphasizes the world's foundation on divine wisdom. Drawing from Proverbs and other Scripture, Ellis highlights how embracing Christ's wisdom restores order amidst human chaos. By dwelling in Wisdom’s house, Ellis guides readers to rediscover divine wisdom, encouraging a transformative journey towards living wisely in God’s magnificent world.
I loved how vivid this devotional was. The author does a great job of bringing abstract concepts to life by depicting wisdom and folly as houses, neighbors, and people. It’s often hard to understand poetic Scripture because of intangible ideas, but here they are easy to understand while being presented through eloquent writing. I recommend reading the meditations in order because they flow well in an intentional order. Most days I read one in the morning and one at night, continuously feeling peace and clarity while reflecting. This is beneficial for both those who have never participated in devotional readings before and those who have been walking with Christ for years.
Thank you @moodypublishers for the free copy of this book 🥰 This was an incredibly inspiring and beautiful devotional.

We all need more wisdom in life, do we not? Daily we are faced with the choice to follow the path of folly or to walk the narrow road of Wisdom. As those who walk with Christ and live by the power of the Spirit, we have access to the life-defining Wisdom that only Christ can give. This devotional style book contains 100 meditations on what it looks like to choose wisdom and pursue a life based on Scripture.
With a devotional focused on Wisdom, it would be easy to primarily use verses from Proverbs. But I appreciated the varied portions of Scripture, highlighting the strength of the Wisdom theme throughout the whole Bible. For Christ is the embodiment of Wisdom and the whole Bible is the story of Christ.
I can see the value of this book as a compliment to daily Bible reading and study. Personally, I found the writing style to be wordy and clunky at times, with very heady concepts. The author also consistently employs metaphor and imagery that were hard to connect with. That being said, this devotional may be more widely appreciated by the academic crowd.
I received a complimentary book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Where can you hear wisdom? In Wisdom’s Call, K. A. Ellis writes 100 meditations for a life in Christ.
By dwelling on short passages of Scripture, Ellis helps her reader discover the rich wisdom that is truly found in Christ. Her words are warm, and she invites you to come closer to the God who gives wisdom.
The Wise Hear the Words of Christ
I was most interested to see that we either follow Wisdom or Folly. They are two houses, calling us to stay with them. The wise will flourish, while the foolish are headed for destruction. I was challenged to continually seek wisdom in Christ — the source of all knowledge and the wisdom by which the world turns.
Ellis shows that true wisdom impacts all aspects of life. You will come to see that celebrity is unnatural, and it is folly to elevate others our even ourselves as idols. The wise hear the words of Christ, and obey his commands to follow him and live.
I received a media copy of Wisdom’s Call and this is my honest review.
