Piece O' Cake Designs fills your home with the Christmas spirit all year round! Half of these new designs give the holiday season a whimsical twist with unexpected fabrics and colors, and the other half are versatile and beautiful quilts that you can use even after the rest of your holiday decorations are packed away.
Most people know me as half of the Piece O' Cake Designs team. With my partner, Linda Jenkins, we have written many quilt books. I am also a wife, mother, grandmother, and daughter. I love my family and friends!
Travel is part of my life - for both work and pleasure. I travel and teach quilting nationally and internationally. It's great fun to meet new people and see new places! My husband, Steve, and I enjoy traveling together - hiking when we can.
With every day, I am more aware of the fact that each day is a gift to be embraced. I do my best to do that with a smile and open heart.
I normally enjoy Becky Goldsmith’s designs but this book was a dud. More pages were spent on basic quilt construction, color choice, etc. than on the designs, which were marginal at best. A disappointment.
I've seen Piece O'Cake Designs before, mostly in various magazines. They tend to use a lot of really bright colors, which I like. I really like that they take the "must be red & green" out of the Christmas projects in this book. I think the only pattern I would actually make is the Christmas Stocking on page 38--great ideas for personalization!!!! The real strength here, though, for me anyway, are the very easy to follow (I hope!) and broken down steps for traditional (needle turn) applique. I've been interested in applique almost since I started quilting but haven't done anything other than fusible web, which can be limiting. When I do set my sights on a traditional applique project, you can bet I will turn to the instructions in the back of the book and follow them step by step.
Although I don't yet do applique, I did pick up some cute ideas with techniques I do practice.
The idea of using rick rack to write Merry Christmas tickled me.
Using big stitch quilting to overlay a print with tree shapes added another layer of interest to a busy print.
There is a great summary of color, contrast and value, and designs on fabric. It doesn't hurt to revisit these concepts, or read them for the first time.
This book has some great directions for appliqué but I'm still not ready to hand appliqué. But when I'm ready to give it a try, I'll be sure to refer to the General Quiltmaking Instructions section.
