About the author

Miki Yamamoto is a Japanese artist and graphic novelist. She has started her carrier with the wordless picturebook A ribbon around a bomb. She is the author of How Are You, which was selected for the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival Jury Selection, and Sunny Sunny Ann, which received the 17th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Creative Award.
She is also a researcher of picturebooks, especially wordless picturebooks. She has received Ph.D. from University of Tsukuba (Japan). She is an assistant professor of Art and Design at the University of Tsukuba, since 2016.

The art was super cute and so was the story (at times), but lowkey that mom be pissing me off..

It is odd the stories that truly cut you deep. I remember one night being morbidly curious of a tragic event (won't be discussed here). It was a only this specific story, one that had no relation to me, that somehow fundamentally changed how I looked at the world. I was simply reading a police report, but the detail, the image's that seep into your mind, they all stick with you. I thought about this the whole way through. I could see just how strong the grip of one's imagination tied her down to an anxious and violent person.

I would say I am generally an anxious person. It means a lot to me to see my obsesses are not entirely my own. Anxiety for me lays itself a certain way, and for some reason this manga in particular touches it all too well. I am not a parent (or soon to be) but I think on this level the book drew me in just for that depiction alone. I can't imagine having another whole being to worry over!

about the anxiety of parenthood. when a tragic event occurs (the assasination attempt against malala), a couple get anxious about raising a child in a world that is not kind. some parts of the book moved me, but perhaps this will speak more to parents and parents-to-be. some parts dragged but love how the idea of 'raising a child' always being in the mind of parents,

Really loved the colored pencil look of this book. The art is very charming.

I don’t know why but I was a bit uncomfortable with the story featuring a very real person, Malala, as such a large plot point. Like, why is her traumatic near death experience a major plot point in some fictional comic? Felt wrong somehow.

The messaging about the troubles of motherhood and expectations was nice but I could have gone without the rest.

È il 4 marzo 2012 quando Sara e Kōta ritirano insieme il libretto della gravidanza presso la clinica ostetrica Satō. A ottobre nascerà il loro primo figlio. Sguardi complici, innamorati, l’eccitazione incontenibile e la pelle d’oca. Arriva un ciclone a casa Takano, il tempo passa così in fretta e c’è tanto da fare. La lista delle cose da comprare fornita dall’ospedale è lunghissima: carrozzina, seggiolino per l’auto, vasca per il bagnetto, bavaglini, corredo per il futon... Anche documentarsi è importante, genitori non si nasce; così Sara inizia a scegliere manuali e riviste e diviene un’accanita lettrice. Può lavorare da casa, come traduttrice e rifiutare gli incarichi da interprete. Una delle tante letture fatte sul divano la catapulta in un mondo incredibile, fatto di bambini eccezionali, intelligenti, imprenditori precoci e socialmente impegnati. Anche la loro bambina merita il meglio, pensa Sara. Non dovranno mancargli stimoli e possibilità di sperimentare. Potrebbe suonare il piano, imparare delle lingue straniere come la mamma, iscriversi a danza e curare anche l’aspetto sportivo, diventando una nuotatrice o magari una tennista. Sarà sicuramente altruista e vicina al volontariato, ma anche amante delle tradizioni del proprio paese che coltiverà attraverso la cerimonia del tè e l’ikebana. Un figlio eccezionale, intelligente, coraggioso e brillante. Ma il 9 ottobre 2012, a pochi giorni dal parto, qualcosa si incrina in Sara. Alla TV parlano di una giovane ragazza gravemente ferita, Malala Yousafzai, vittima di un’aggressione rivendicata dal regime talebano.

An interesting story about the dreams and anxieties of parenthood. I don't know enough about Japan to say for certain, but I was also left with an impression that mental health support might be lacking (a lot of just saying "stop feeling bad! it's fine!"). I could be projecting.

Che bellezza, e che emozioni.
Non conoscevo minimamente Yamamoto e, grazie ai sconti sugli ebook Bao (che Dio li abbia in gloria), quindi ho recuperato questa prima graphic novel.

Il manga parla di un momento famigliare poco trattato nel mondo dell'arte, escludendo il cristianesimo, ovvero quello della gravidanza, dell'attesa dell'arrivo di una nuova vita e dell'ampliamento di un nucleo familiare.
I protagonisti sono una coppia come tutte, che hanno programmato l'arrivo del primo figlio e non vedono l'ora di intraprendere questo grande cambiamento, con tutte le gioie, paure e ansie.

Data l'origine culturale dell'autrice, mi aspettavo una visione della futura genitorialità diversa da quella che solitamente abbiamo noi occidentali, e anche lo stile grafico mi ha piacevolmente stupito, con una maestria del media come poche.
Sicuramente recupererò l'altro graphic novel pubblicato in Italia.

Manga is one of my big weak spots in comics, because aesthetically I can find it quite alienating at times. But this, fittingly considering the subject, exists as almost a perfect hybrid of manga and western comic styles. In fact it’s most interesting when it actively marries the two, and the soft pencil lines of the art suddenly have the thicker manga art over them - it somehow articulates the slightly unstuck nature of Sara to have the two formats merge so brilliantly. The plot is a little didactic, but I’m presuming is meant for a younger audience anyway, but it’s still an absolutely fascinating example of how to marry genres and shows an artist happy to try and break conventions as and when she can. Plus the ending is absolutely beautiful

It's hard to verbalize my thoughts and feelings about this book. (And I actively dread my professional review being published, because it feels like an inadequate attempt.) I don't have kids and have never been pregnant, but this story still touches on something very real about the fear of bringing a child into the world and the feeling of having your bodily functions rob you of your ability to think about, or be seen as, anything else. It's excellent and I highly recommend it, even if my words about why feel woefully deficient.

This is a thoughtful graphic novel that explores the anxieties and hopes of expectant parents in an uncertain and violent world, as news of Malala Yousafzai's attempted assassination leads pregnant mom Sara to question the wisdom of bringing children into a world of such cruelty, along with her binge read of sad non-fiction involving childhood horrors. The art is amateurish but beautiful, obviously heartfelt. The couple’s anxiety is realistically captured, creating a tense and emotional read. Well done.

Appreciated this very real depiction of the worries potential parents can carry in having a child when terrible events are constantly happening. The overall resolution was sweet but dang did Kouta ever make me mad nearly the whole way through with how he was acting like Sara was so selfish. That part of it didn't resolve well enough for me. But I suppose that's a part of the messiness of people.

Love the style and artwork and overall message, but the impact of the messaging at a critical point is overshadowed by a partner that is unable to be empathetic to his pregnant wife in an emotional crisis, calling her selfish and trying to block her physically.

An odd, unusual, emotional, relatable, out there story. Everyone gets out of it what they put in, where they are in life, their likes and dislikes and hates and loves. It is an experience read.

Com'è possibile che un manga di poche parole riesca ad emozionare così tanto? Eppure personalmente Miki Yamamoto ci è riuscita pienamente con questa opera edita dalla Bao.

Una coppia scopre con grande gioia di aspettare un figlio. La notizia è accolta talmente bene che i due iniziano a pianificare e progettare fin da subito ogni cosa del futuro nascituro: dalle cose di prima necessità ai corsi, fino ad arrivare a delineare il carattere e la vita professionale del bambino.

Insieme alla felicità inizia a fare capolino l'ansia, la paura, il panico, l'incertezza. Non solo legate alla sensazione di inadeguatezza nel diventare genitori, ma soprattutto per il mondo in cui nascerà, delle pressioni nel farlo diventare "qualcuno" di eccezionale. O forse sarebbe meglio semplicemente lasciarlo essere sè stesso e farsi strada da solo?

In pochissime pagine e con pochissime parole la Yamamoto è riuscita a condensare i pensieri negativi e invasivi di molti futuri genitori o neo genitori. Ma come in ogni coppia la comunicazione è importantissima, e capirsi soprattutto in certi eventi della vita è fondamentale.

Miki Yamamoto ha uno stile molto semplice ed essenziale, molto lontano dal disegno che piace a me, ma è sicuramente molto immediato, è infatti grazie al disegno che si percepiscono le gioie e le paure dei personaggi.

Un manga autoconclusivo, a colori, che straconsiglio a tutti, senza limiti. Una lettura emozionante, che fa molto riflettere.

❓Ma è così importante essere eccezionali?

🫂 Oggi iniziamo con una domanda che racchiude l’intera sfera genitoriale, andando oltre, verso quello che c’è dopo la gravidanza e la stessa nascita. In questo fumetto, la storia parte appunto con la lieta novella e da quel momento la vita per i due sposini inizia a gravitare tutta attorno alla futura nascitura.
I due coniugi Takano vogliono il meglio per loro figlia, fanno già un piano prestabilito: inglese, lezioni di musica, sport, iniziano a leggere libri su libri di bambini che a soli nove, dodici, quindici anni sono diventati famosi perché eccezionali, appunto, in diverse cose. Premi Nobel, premi per la pace, e così via. Come farà loro figlia a spiccare tra tutti questi altri ragazzini?

🌎 Tutte queste progettazioni vengono interrotte perché, ahimè, le notizie che si sentono al giorno d’oggi, nella società in cui viviamo, non sono sempre belle. Da quel momento alla sorpresa e alla gioia subentrano paura ed incertezza. E quindi, come si fa ad affrontare queste difficoltà e questa paura per il futuro?

💖 Piccoli consigli che ci teniamo a lasciarvi, prima di consigliarvi assolutamente questa lettura:

- Ogni bambino è diverso ed ognuno è speciale a modo suo;
- I paragoni non aiutano la crescita, anzi, possono far scaturire ansie e una competitività eccessiva;
- L’esperienza è la parte fondamentale per ogni piccolo, quella che sarà alla base della sua crescita personale e si porterà anche nella fase adulta;
- Abbiate fiducia, sempre, in quello che fanno e in quello che gli insegnate.

Young expecting parents Sara and Kouta Takano are trying to plan out everything perfectly for their first child. As we open up, Sara is eight weeks pregnant. They begin by reading as many parenting books as possible, which leads into Sara purchasing many books from parents who have raised remarkable children. The two even make a list of the type of lessons and extracurricular activities they want their child to pursue. Eventually, they find out they are having a girl. One day, Sara hears devastating news on her TV: Malala Yousafzai has been shot, and the world she's been building for her unborn daughter comes crumbling down. Her anxiety about bringing a girl up to become courageous is suddenly called into question.

This deceptively simple manga packs an emotional punch that is poignant and hits on a sensitive subject for many in our world. As global events are ever-present and violence is continuously part of our every-day life, many people have real fears of bringing another life into this world. This manga would also be an interesting tool to spark discussion about how historical moments impact and cascade outward and impact people across the globe; Sara didn't know and had no interaction with Malala, so why was she so deeply moved by what happened to her? Having students examine that level of empathy and impact would lead to some interesting discussions.

Uno dei miei manga preferiti dell'anno. Mi ha commossa tantissimo.
Al centro c'è una coppia in attesa del suo primo figlio; una coppia che si trova ad affrontare le paura, le aspettative e i dubbi legati all'arrivo di un bambino che dipenderà totalmente da loro, all'inizio. Sapranno valorizzare i suoi talenti? Sapranno proteggerlo dai pericoli del mondo che li circonda?
Lo ho adorato. E ho pianto un sacco.

Illustrazioni minimali ed efficienti.
La tematica dell’ansia e la paura legate ad una gravidanza sono ben descritte, forse troppo.
Avrei preferito vedere i due protagonisti “ in prova” con il nascituro, invece la storia tronca il suo corso ancor prima dell’evento di nascita.
Piacevole ma non troppo.

Un breve ma meraviglioso fumetto che incapsula bene le gioie e i dolori dell'attesa di un bambino, con tutte le aspettative che si tendono a creare. La gravidanza, nella sua natura temporanea, diventa un terreno fertile per un climax di sogni proiettati sul nascituro, sogni che però vengono corrotti dalla realizzazione della dura realtà nella quella il piccolo viene messo al mondo.
