1899 Johnstown, Pennsylvania
What a horrific event! On May 31, 1899, a dam broke and flooded Johnstown. More than 2,000 people lost their lives.
The novel is not so much about the event itself, but the aftermath. How does one pick up the pieces of wreckage: emotional and physical. With devastation everywhere, it's hard to know where to begin.
Lots of historical details included in the pages, such as the inclusion of Clara Barton and the Red Cross helping in Johnstown. Wrapped around all the historical detail is a message of hope and a budding romance.

What an excellent book! I am again impressed with Candice's writing to have such a gripping story that I felt the emotions of aw, injustice, sorrow during various times throughout the book. This series based upon historical disasters that occurred over time for various reasons is not only educational and enlightening but such an insight into life back over the years. As we know, human nature remains pretty constant in some ways; often during times of crisis there are ones who are filled with compassion who do their best to help one another, some selfish who loot, and for the man made ones....can be greedy and cruel then who because of their behaviour....cause deaths and destruction to innocent lives.
The situation behind the floods was due to neglect of the dam and structures despite repeated warnings of impending horrendous consequences; the wealthy owners of the club hid their membership, refused to take any blame as is typical with corruption as we have seen.
The spiritual aspects were beautifully woven through and evident throughout! I was so pleased with the excellent use of the gospel and themes of trusting God even when it's almost impossible to bear or understand, the forgiveness message that characters had to learn and accept. It was a satisfying and marvelous read! I will gladly keep read more this author :)

I love historical fiction as they are, but the fact that this was inspired by such true events made this an incredible read. What a brilliant way to fictionalize a true event of the Johnstown flood. I thought this story was so interesting, and I appreciated the way Candice Sue Patterson talks about all of the true occurrences and creates some of the characters to give the story depth and to make it her own.

4.5 ⭐️ I have been fascinated with the Johnstown flood ever since reading David McCullough’s book many years ago. This novel is a great account of the events and does well to wrestle through grief and forgiveness from a Biblical godly perspective. There were a few things I would have changed but overall it was a very good story.

I recently had the pleasure of discovering the writing talent of Candice Sue Patterson through her most recent novel, "When the Waters Came."
Patterson takes the reader on a journey leading up to the Johnstown Flood of 1889 and into the heart of the disaster, immersing them in the harrowing aftermath of a dam break.
The story unfolds through the perspectives of two compelling characters: Monty, the resilient town pastor who miraculously survives the flood, and Annamae, a dedicated nurse with the newly formed Red Cross. The intricate weaving of their experiences adds depth to the narrative and keeps readers engaged from start to finish.
Monty's struggle with wavering faith in the wake of the catastrophic event is both poignant and relatable. His efforts to conceal his connection to wealthy figures held responsible for the dam's neglect add a layer of suspense and intrigue.

This tragic story based on true historical events was delivered in a way which made me feel the loss and heartache and struggle of the survivors to start fresh.
The story was rich with historical facts between the fictional story developing between Monty and Annamae.
The lesson of forgiveness and how you can only truly moved on when you let go of anger and bitterness came across strong.

When a flood of horrific proportions devastates the town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Red Cross and other volunteers descend into the valley to tend to the survivors and clean up the debris.
Ms. Patterson recounts the true, harrowing experiences in a way that tugs at your heart. The first few chapters describe the onslaught of water and show the bravery of the few that made it out alive. In subsequent chapters, she chronicles the extensive job it was to clean up and start to repair the damage and to house the survivors. Based on a real event, the author used extensive research to make the story come alive, including quotes from contemporary sources. She interestingly includes notable dignitaries and Ckara Barton, the head of the newly formed Red Cross.
The fictional pastor, Monty and red Cross nurse, Annamae, were very realistic, as were their struggles. This book had many lessons to teach about perseverance, compassion and forgiveness, the formost beig forgiveness. How can we not forgive when Jesus has forgiven all sinners, even the ones who do not accept His great sacrifice. Forgiveness benefits the one who forgives even if the one who is forgiven doesn’t acknowledge it.
This is my first read of 2024 and it will be on my favorites list for the year.

I have yet to read a book by Candice Sue Patterson that deserved anything less than 5 stars, and When the Waters Came is no exception! It was riveting from the very first chapter with historically haunting imagery of a town being wiped away by a devastating flood. I couldn't help but compare it to our present reality in 2024 when Hurricane Helene hit a large portion of the Southeast which caused immense damage.
While the storyline itself was no mystery, decisions made by influential people directly involved with the Johnstown community had sinister connections. I appreciated that Candice did not shy away from mentioning those directly responsible for the dam breaking and what the consequences were for their actions. She also included a very helpful author's note at the end describing which people were real vs. fictitious, how Clara Barton and the Red Cross were directly involved with medical assistance, and how politics and standing influenced the flooding.
This author does a masterful job with historical fiction, and if you enjoy authors like Elizabeth Camden, Allison Pittman, or Tara Johnson, Candice Sue Patterson is definitely an author you should have on your radar!

Gut-wrenching and soul-searching! It's only mid-January but I've just found my first favorite book of 2024! I started reading "When the Waters Came" during a rainstorm, so I was immediately caught up in the vivid descriptions of torrential rain, rushing flood waters, and human suffering beyond imagination. Author Candice Sue Patterson blends fictional characters and real people to share her story of the devastating Johnstown Flood of 1889, and the results are mesmerizing!

This story takes place in Johnstown Philadelphia in 1889, it made me think of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated three states in 2005. The levees surrounding the city of New Orleans had engineering defects that exacerbated the issue. Likewise his tale based on true events, revealed that the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club was aware of the dam's cracks but took no action to stop and /or prevent this tragedy.
Not only was this community trying to pick up the pieces of their lives after a devastating loss of life, loved ones, and mass destruction, but they were also battling typhoid fever.
I enjoyed how the author used the perspectives of Pastor Monty and volunteer nurse Annamae Worthington to tell this story. Annamae is a nurse who is working under Miss Clara Barton, (who founded the American Red Cross.) It was fun to learn that not only was Clara a hospital nurse in the Civil War, but she was a teacher, a patent clerk and mentor to Annamae.
The investigation into why the dam broke, which Monty and Annamae collaborated on, unfortunately points to Monty's uncle, whom Annamae believes is to blame for her father's passing. It's possible that this will be the last straw for their newly discovered love.
Even though the subject matter in this book was difficult to read at times, I couldn't put it down. As the main characters start a new chapter in their lives, the author provides them with hope. Each learns how to let go and deal with life's challenges, allowing God to heal their bodies and wounded hearts.

When the Waters Came kicks off a new historical fiction series from Christian publishing house, Barbour. If the rest of the series is anything like this first installment, readers are in for a treat!
This book recounts the tragedy of the Johnstown flood in the 1800s. While I had heard of this event, I didn’t know much about it, so I was immediately engaged in the historical facts of the book. I also greatly enjoyed the character development of Annamae and Monty. Each had his/her own well-developed storyline and their interactions with each other felt natural, not forced. The faith element in this book was just right--naturally occurring and realistic, not forced or preachy.

What a book! So heart-wrenching, I never knew this event in history took place! The author does a wonderful job weaving history and fiction together, using real accounts as a basis for this story. I love historical fiction, but most focus on very well known events like WWII. This was unique, well-written, and a great look at God’s love through the lens of disaster.

The well-written account immediately drew me in as we witness the impending Johnstown flood from a young pastor’s eyewitness experience. It feels like you are present with those suffering during this horrific devastation. Then the ongoing aftermath unfolds, with its troubles, trials, and trauma, and even a love relationship blossoming amid the devastating tragedy. The compelling plot with its twists and surprises and the authentic characters portrayed bring this fictional retelling of a terrible disaster from US history to life and grab the emotions in the process. The author did a great job presenting a believable and gripping piece that remains in your mind long after reading the story. Could such widespread destruction have been avoided? Actual people are named in the tale, like Nurse Clara Barton of the Red Cross, along with the rich men who refused to consider trying to prevent the impending danger. I loved this book. It is a sad part of history. And my heart ached while reading it. The author did a great job without being too graphic with the details. It is a great romance novel as well.
My favorite quote from the book “ Everyone sins nailed Jesus to the cross. He wrote each of our names in his wounds. Even the ones of those he knew would never ask for forgiveness. That way, everyone would have a fair chance of Heaven. If they chose to accept him, Heforgave out of love.” His words pricked her heart. “ I’m not Jesus, she whispered, more tears spilling down her cheeks. “ I don’t love those men like he does. “ Monty reached for her hand, holding it tenderly bewteen his. “ None of us love like Jesus. But it’s something we should constantly strive for.”
If you like history and romance in a fictional novel then you need to pick up a copy of this book and read it for yourself.

Impressions: I loved this book. On a personal note, I was born in Conemaugh Hospital and have family that have lived in Johnstown since the flood, making this story special to me. I think the history of the flood is so interesting. The author incorporated so many details, bringing this story to life. It was without question an emotionally sobering time for the people of Johnstown and the surrounding area, and I feel like the author did a wonderful job exploring the response of all involved. The main characters were perfectly suited to the fictional aspects of this story. I appreciated the different perspectives of people who were part of Johnstown during this time of history. A little history and a little love made this engaging story a must-read.

When the Waters Came is from (new to me) author Candice sue Patterson. it is the first book in a series focused on great natural disaster events in american history. This book focuses on the Johnstown Flood of 1889.
Unlike many other books, this book begins moments before the dam breaks and focuses on what happens during the flood and in the days and weeks after the flood. This is a different take from most books I've read.
the reader experiences the flood from two perspectives:
Monty--the town pastor who survives the flood only because his house got stuck next to the church and he was able to climb to the roof and then into the church attic.
Annamae--a nurse with the newly formed Red Cross who arrives with Clara Barton 5 days after the flood to take care of the people
Annamae finds Monty wandering and brings him to get help at the tent and thus begins their friendship.
Thru the book, Monty deals with wavering faith in God after such a horrific disaster as well as trying to hide his connection to the wealthy men the towns holds at fault for not taking care of the dam. What would they do to learn he was one of the men's nephews and grew up in wealth? But he's also determined to follow the investigation. His past life is revealed just in moments he shares with Annamae or inward reflection.
Annamae's journey through teh book is one of learning to forgive in order to release her bitterness. She lost her father due to the greed of a wealthy businessman and she wants them to pay. And this disaster just fuels her hatred and bitterness--they just CAN'T get off scott free again from taking responsibility. She will do whatever it takes to get them to pay...even if it means telling Monty's secret to the press.
MOnty has to learn how to put aside his love for Annamae in order to help her spiritual journey--and at the same time he has to learn to find strength in his own faith to be able to help others again. How can He share that God is still good after a disaster of godly proportion?
If you have never read anything about the Johnstown flood, I think this book will whet your whistle for more. I have read a lot about it after I first encountered it in the book by Catherine Marshall "Julie". And I love learning more and more about it. Even though it makes you get angry at the Robber Barons of the age.
I will be following this series because it's the type that I enjoy reading.

Pastor Monty Childs and Red Cross nurse Annamae Worthington meet as they work together after the Johnstown flooding that obliterated the city. As Monty ministers to the survivors that have lost family members and their homes, Annamae cares for their physical wounds and needs. There is a spark between the two that neither have experienced before but between the floods devastation and an outbreak of typhoid fever, both are extremely busy caring for others. As Annamae cares for the wounded, she discovers the flood may not be “an act of God” after all, but the result of negligence from the Hunting & Fishing Club’s wealthy and powerful men that owned the dam. This sparks her desire to see these men held responsible and justice served. Surely Pastor Monty can help her but he’s holding something back- what and why?
Wow, Candice Sue Patterson has done it again. What’s amazing about this story is that so much of it is true. The author weaves real people such as Clara Barton from the Red Cross and real quotes, events and real survivors stories into the mix which make for an emotionally charged, faith filled story. The devastation these innocent people faced was unimaginable and their stories live on throughout these pages. We see so many relatable scenarios presented such as the strong, faith-filled pastor struggling with why has God allowed this tragedy to happen? Or Annamae struggling with anger and forgiveness. These struggles were genuine and it was delicately written and presented in a way that gave God the glory, beauty from the ashes, light from darkness!
The authors note must not be missed at the end of the book. There you will read how much time and effort was put into the study for this book which as you read from start to finish is very evident. I really commend the author for doing an amazing job with the research.

When the Waters Came, the first book in Barbour’s A Day to Remember series, is a powerful, compelling story. This skillfully woven, poignant tale based on a true historical event, the 1889 Johnstown Flood, drew me in immediately and kept me immersed for the entirety of the story. The fictional characters are well-crafted and memorable. In addition, many real-life historical figures are wonderfully and believably infused into the fictional story. Rich sensory imagery and vivid, detailed descriptions of the flood and its aftermath put you at the scene allowing you to experience the story as you read. The amazing historical detail in the story reflects extensive, meticulous research. Monty and Annamae’s love story is sweet and at times bittersweet. I appreciate the strong, inspiring faith element with themes of hope, forgiveness, and restoration. This is the kind of story that stays with you long after the last word is read. I love this book and have added it to my Best Books Ever list. I recommend it as a must read for historical romance fans.

Well written and the first 50% was very interesting as I'd never heard of this disaster, however when it was obvious that the story was headed towards being of the romance genre I lost a lot of interest✋️

I listened to the first part of McCullogh’s story of the Johnstown flood but never finished it. It was such a disastrous happening and possibly could have been prevented.
This story of the event made me feel like I was there, experiencing the horrors as the residents of Johnstown and nearby communities did. Told through the eyes of Monty, a local pastor who survives and Annamae, a Red Cross nurse who comes from Washington, D.C.to help. I felt I could see and hear the trauma of it all.
An interesting historical note is that Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, was present in the recovery effort.

I immensely enjoyed reading through this book based off of the historical flooding in Johnstown, PA in the late 1800s. This story has some interesting characters and has Christian views shared throughout the book. Don't let that scare you from finding out the true accounts of what happened when the South Fork Dam failed for it's residents that tragic day. Between the rich history of this story and the tragedies the people of this town went through has me wanting to learn more about that fateful day. I'm looking forward to reading some more books by this author!

When The Waters Came by Candice Sue Patterson is the first book I’ve read from her. This story, taken from true events of a catastrophic flood in 1889, was so moving, so heartbreaking, so inspiring. God came through momentously for the survivors of this horrifying ordeal and Candice captured that so beautifully. This is the first of six books based from true event tragedies coming from Barbour Fiction. I hope to read each one of them!!

When the Waters Came is the first in a series of six fictional accounts of American disasters - both natural and manmade that transformed the communities they impacted. My issue with the book is that the story becomes much more about the two main characters and romance than the flood and the town. As always, I am glad for the history this historical fiction taught me. I was just not the reader for the fictional part of the story.

The riveting storyline and well-developed characters captivated my mind and heart! The author opens each chapter with quotes from primary sources which help guides her readers into the ravaging waters that swallowed up Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1889.
As I read this story, the Texas Hillcountry is reeling from the tragedy of the flooding of the Guadalupe River. Reading of this horrific historical flood in Johnstown was especially poignant as we have lost many lives, many precious young children and families who were enjoying the Fourth of July holiday weekend along the banks of this beautiful Texas river. The timing of this read, for me, was hard but in a strange way, healing. When I realized this connection, I was hesitant to continue, but I am so glad I did! Candice Sue Patterson weaves into each of her accountings, the loving sovereignty of God and I was very encouraged.
The strength and integrity of her protagonists was astounding as evidenced in the following quotes:

This was a Book Club selection that I wasn’t excited about reading and almost convinced myself to not read, but then I remembered I joined the Book Club so that I could be introduced to books I wouldn’t normally select. So I started it 5 days ago and instantly became interested in the characters and the plot. I thought it was a good book overall, but this isn’t a top fave for me.

So I started it 5 days ago and instantly became interested in the characters and the plot. I thought it was a good book overall, but this isn’t a top fave for me.

This was such an enthralling story about the flooding of Johnstown. I had never heard of this tragedy and the awful circumstances behind it. I loved the way the author weaved in the story of Clara Barton and the Red Cross. Monty and Annamae were such fascinating characters and I enjoyed how they wrestled with their own past throughout the story.
