The Wallflower Scandal Series in order: #1 The Beastly Duke and his Wallflower #2 The Duke’s Virgin Spinster
This book has everything your heart desires on a romance, a little love, a little adventure, a little bit of the damsel in destress, and a little bit of the girl saving the guy, or at least saving his heart. Vanessa is kind and somewhat innocent, even though she has lustful desires for Wilson, and Wilson can’t get her out of his head. Enter a greedy Aunt and Uncle and a little unexpected plot-twist and now you have a setting for adventure. Of course when it comes to a romance you do need the happy ending, and this provides it nicely. This is a spicy romance, and has somewhat explicit scenes in it. I personally enjoy a little spice to my romance novel and this is both sweet and spicy. I received the book as a member of an ARC team, however, the review is my own personal and honest opinion.
What a journey! This story is packed with mistaken identities, scandal, nefarious plots, and of course, romance.
Vanessa is a kind-hearted, loyal woman who refuses to see the bad in people. Considered “on the shelf,” she embraces her independence, living quietly in the small house her parents left her. Yet she makes a bold decision: to experience the touch of a man, even without marriage. That choice sets her on a path that changes everything.
Enter Wilson, and the case of mistaken identity. Wilson is a good man, grieving deeply and blaming himself for the death of his first wife. His loyalty, kindness, and determination make him a compelling hero, even as he struggles with guilt and sorrow.
Together, Vanessa and Wilson navigate scandal and secrets, finding love in the most unexpected of circumstances. Claire Devon delivers a tale that blends passion, resilience, and redemption, proving that even in the midst of plots and heartbreak, true love can flourish.
A great book! I couldn’t put it down! I really enjoyed Vanessa and Wilson’s story. The story had a couple of twists to keep you on edge…this did NOT just plod along! I would love to see it continue 🥰
Wow, what a story! I couldn’t put it down. Wilson, Duke of Brockwood has lived alone with his grief and guilt since his wife died five years ago believing he was to blame. Now he is lonely, stern man afraid to let anyone in his life again. On a stormy night he picks a door to get directions to his business meeting and instead is pulled inside by a beautiful woman, sexily dressed who grabs him and kissed him. Shocked, he returns the kiss holding her till she pushes him away. She can’t go through with her plans. Now embarrassed she notices the man is also and leaves. Vanessa is a spinster who is turning thirty and wanted to know what having a man was like. She reads lots of romance stories and they have filled her with lustful desires to know. She took money she shouldn’t and hired a man for the night. But after the most handsome man showed up and she threw herself at him she couldn’t go thru with it. What a mess even more then she knows as the man is not who she thought but a Duke instead! Wow, intrigue, misunderstanding, greedy relatives, betrayal for both Wilson and her from people they trusted or at least thought they knew. We have scandal, kidnapping, guilt, passion, love and evil nasty villains too. Our couple will need to forgive, learn to trust and maybe get the best of mistake. There is so much going on in this story you will not be able to put it down. Others have said it was sexy, while there are lots of kissing and lustful thoughts and desire on both parts I found it was pretty tame till ending. I wish we would have been told what happen to the necklace?? I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.
What a wonderful story of betrayal, greed, spinsterhood , grief and love this is. The author does a beautiful job of weaving a very believable tale of intrigue. Vanessa believes herself to be poor, with only her guardians keeping her barely alive. Desperate to do something for herself, she delves into a situation that only gets her into trouble, but meets the man of her dreams. I was so enthralled with the story, I was getting frustrated with some of the descriptive text because I wanted to see what happened next! The story did seem to drag a tiny bit about a quarter of the way through, seeming to revisit the Earl’s guilt more than I thought necessary to get the point across, but the climax was wonderful and the villain revealed and handled! Loved this book, love this series!
I received this ARC copy for free and these are my own opinions
I really enjoyed this story. Lady Vanessa was a spinster and wanted to know what it was like to be loved by a man just once in her life. She paid for a night with a male excort. However, due to a storm, Duke Justin got lost and ended up at the house. Vanessa mistook him for the male escort. She was keen to learn about being with a man. At first, Justin, responded to her then realised that he was betraying his late wife. They tried to forget their evening together. The story follows the ups and downs of their relationship. There are family problems, social disgrace, friendship issues, mental health and drug issues, violence, fraud and deceit before their relationship can finally be settled. A good story. I liked the unexpected ending in the extended epilogue.
What a charming story. I received an email this morning from the author with the first three chapters of this story and once I started reading I was hooked, downloading the book straightaway to keep reading. I loved the characters. Vanessa had a harsh and sad upbringing but was still gracious, kind and at times spirited. Never being touched by a man and fearing she was going to be a spinster for the rest of her life she takes matters into her own hands to disastrous results. Wilson, Duke of Brockwood, a broken sad man enters Vanessa’s life quite by accident altering both of their lives forever. Along the way they faced and overcame blackmail, humiliation, treachery and deception. This story kept me engaged all the way through. I really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this historical romance. Vanessa is a spinster, who at twenty-nine, is considered well & truly ‘on the shelf’! I really liked that she is a woman ahead of her time, in that she wants to experience physical love with a man before she turns thirty and resigns herself to enduring spinsterhood. I loved the way her plans go awry when WIlson, a Duke, knocks on her door on the night of her planned ‘experience’ to ask for directions and the story develops from there. Throw in the fact that the Duke still blames himself for his wife’s death and is not ready to give his heart again; as well as Vanessa’s scheming relatives and you have an engaging historical romance which has several unexpected plot twists and turns before inevitable HEA. Recommended read if this is your genre.
Curiosity (almost) killed the cat? Approaching her thirty years old, Vanessa does not want to remain a virgin. She mistakes Wilson, the Duke of Brockwood, for the hired male courtesan. Their chemistry is immediately off the charts and they meet again at a ball. Neither can forget the other. When her aunt and uncle try to force her into an arranged marriage to get their hands on her trust, they soon discover that she is not as biddable as they thought despite the lies and the opiates they ply her with. An intriguing and fascination story, which will keep you riveted from the first page to the last.
Interesting story line with related characters (except for Elliot who felt 2-dimensional). Story seemed a little disjointed at times with a thought/line picked up and dropped before fully completed/developed (ex - the week at the Duke's house - we get details of 1st 24 hours and then h is leaving; H thinks that he needs to convince h he is truly offering for her but we get no information about what he does to convince her). Some inconsistencies also - aunt and uncle move north where it is cheaper to live but a little later are incarcerated. Unanswered questions - why did brother never try to reach sister after leaving sanitarium?
Well paced story with intrigue, misadventures, romance, manslaughter, devil's in disguise, and a happy ending. Wilson is a nice guy/duke mourning the death of his wife five years ago. He can't get over the loss of the love of his life. Vanessa is a thirty year old orphan/spinster living frugally, alone in London. She is dependent on a small allowance from her aunt and uncle.
Mistaken identity leads to a scandal that Wilson and Vanessa navigate. There's sweet kisses, warm hugs, petting for pleasure, and intercourse after marriage. 2.5 🌶️
What a great romance. This book is more than just a romance with an intriguing storyline that leads us on a steamy and sensual road to the Duke and the spinsters happily ever after. There are a couple of really good story lines tied in to the plot. I really loved this book. I read it in one sitting. Claire Devon can really write a story that draws you in from beginning to end. I recommend this book to everyone!
Vanessa is approaching 30 and arranges to find out what a physical relationship is like. The Duke mistakes her door for another and chaos ensues. A really lovely romp with a missing inheritance, a false would be suitor, a missing heir, and relatives of questionable ethics. Devon has written a sprightly and delicious tale filled with twists and turns and outside of the traditional London season milieu. Well worth reading!
I loved Vanessa and Wilson’s story! She’s a thirty year old spinster, living in poverty, being scammed of her inheritance. He is a widowed Duke, pining for his dead wife. He arrives at Vanessa’s home in the middle of a storm, and once their paths crossed, they would never be the same. Their’s is a sweet and patient love story, along with suspense and evil doers, but I love a dynamic, take charge Duke, who’s not afraid to go after what he wants and set things to right! A most enjoyable read!
It's a clumsy title for a story full of intrigue. Vanessa is approaching thirty, and despite a title, she has no money and has never been courted. She takes steps to remedy this, and so meets Wilson, a man still grieving his late wife after four years. This book is filled with villains, greed being the primary motivation. I found it slumped a bit in the middle, but regained my interest to merit the fifth star.
Well written, full of love, romance, steam, suspense, deceptions. Both of the Hero and Heroine have past issues of their own to deal with so that they may get to their happily ever after. This is a book that you start to read and do not put down till the end. Great storyline, plot and characters. Would recommend to all.
I am an ARC and leave this unbiased, honest review.
It doesn’t seem to matter what way she turns Vanessa is beset with scandal! Wanting to feel love, but wrong man comes to her door,Wilson is looking for directions! Leads to more scandal, but still grieving for lost wife, he feels guilty but desire for Vanessa! Many twists and turns and betrayal!
This book has a little bit of everything from a dysfunctional family, heart ache, love, guilt, deception and some very "steamy" scenes. The charaters are well developed and I think you will enjoy the interaction between them where it is a family issue or a romantic one.
Fun plot ideas. Note that the steam in the beginning is to catch a reader, but is not carried through. Lusty not love for a good portion of the book where the characters didn't get to know each other. Open door scenes
I honestly had no expectations when I started reading this but I was completely surprised how amazing this book is. It is fun, funny, exciting, and very romantic. 5/5 🩷⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I think everyone needs a Wilson and Vanessa in their life :))
Yeah... so... the concept was interesting, but it wasn't well written (IMO). I found myself skim-reading. I got it as a freebie on Amazon, so I can't complain. It might make a good movie with some tweaks.
Her aunt and uncle robbed her of her inheritance and tried to take her freedom. He felt responsible for his wife’s death but in the end they found happiness together.
