Rate this book
Author and Bible teacher Kelly Needham reveals how we've been fooled into chasing meaning in all the wrong places, identifies the source of our hunger for the extraordinary, and shows us the steps we can take today to build a purpose-filled reality without turning our lives upside-down.

Many of us are exhausted from dreaming big and chasing the extraordinary lives we long for, but when we try embracing the everyday and find meaning in the mundane, we fear we're settling for a boring life. Are we missing something?

Kelly Needham has been the keynote speaker, the person folding T-shirts backstage, and the mom dealing with the ups and downs of daily life. By sharing her experiences with both the extraordinary and the humdrum--and wrestling with feelings of disappointment along the way--Needham helps readers discover for themselves the truth that changes we weren't made to do something, but to know Someone. And it's that Someone who can infuse our lives with infinite purpose and meaning. In Purposefooled she explains

why we feel like we were made for more and shows us the freeing answer to our longings, the ways modern technology affects our desires and dreams--and how to live free from its pressures and pitfalls, how familiar Bible stories reveal that being a world-changer is more accessible and simpler than we think, why we need to reclaim our imaginations from culture and steward them with eternity in mind, andwhat it looks like to live a deeply meaningful life today instead of wearing ourselves out trying to reach the next big thing.

Dnf @ 90% - I loved the topics surrounding this book. I felt like I grabbed a lot from it but it was very long. I felt like some of the subjects were repetitive and I was just waiting until it was done. I wish it wasn’t so repetitive but overall a very applicable topic.

LOVED this book so much! It was full of such good wisdom and it challenged me to look at what my purpose is in life and what I really value. Living in a culture that highly values individualism and finds meaning in what you do (your verbs) this book turns those ideas upside down.

I also loved how she used so much Scripture throughout and it made me look at some of the Bible stories she shared in a whole new light. This is the second book by Kelly Needham that I’ve read and she’s becoming one of my favorite authors!

This book was very timely for me as I’ve been currently wrestling with how I identify my sense of “purpose.” Kelly is an excellent writer and clearly communicates solid theology in that “our purpose is a person” (meaning Christ) instead of the “verbs” (actions and accomplishments) in our life. I needed this good word about the theology of the ordinary. I have deeply felt the world’s call to be unique, special, and praised thinking this will give me satisfaction. I have felt burdened by the epidemic of options society offers me to seek after my own glory. But, praise God that my value comes from whom has created me. God has made me to be seen and perceived by him - not an audience of humankind. This is a great read for any believer that struggles to reconcile personal ambition with being a servant of heaven.

This is for every Believer, those who are living out their dream & those waiting and praying for their dream to come alive. In the kindest and humblest way, Kelly reminds us that our dreams are not meant to serve the Lord, but meant to just BE with the Lord.

Title: Purposefooled: Why Chasing Your Dreams, Finding Your Calling, and Reaching for Greatness Will Never Be Enough
Author: Kelly Needham
Rating: 5/5

Thank you @netgalley and Thomas Nelson for my #gifted eARC of Purposefooled: Why Chasing Your Dreams, Finding Your Calling, and Reaching for Greatness Will Never Be Enough.

This is easily one of my favorite books of 2023 so far. I wish college-age Emily could’ve read this one. 😅 Throughout the book, Kelly shares that our purpose is not found in verbs but in a single noun, a Person—God. Our purpose isn’t in what we are doing but in who we are with—God! If you’ve ever wondered what your purpose is or felt weary doing and chasing after achievement (even ministry!,) this is a book for you.

I really loved how Kelly shared about how she came to the truth about her purpose but initially struggled with seemingly losing more or gaining less (human) visibility in some ways. I feel like I’ve gone through similar things in the past years, and I just felt so encouraged and convicted by Kelly’s writing and sharing. God sees. Our purpose is His glory-this is great news!

This was a freeing, biblical, and wise book on such an important topic.

Highly recommend!

I’ll be honest. I started this book with A LOT of skepticism, I almost DNF at 30% because I wasn’t ready to let go of the idea that I was made for a specific, unique purpose. But the truth is, I was made for a person—Jesus. Kelly guided me through the possibility that my verbs don’t make me purposeful, and that my calling (is the same as all of us) to know Christ & make him known. I see now that each unique situation in my life, is there, as an opportunity to fulfill my ultimate purpose—bringing glory to God.

My fav quotes from the book:

“When we let Jesus take his rightful place as our purpose & significance, we are freed from the idea that we constantly need to build something for ourselves, and released towards the task of building his Kingdom!”

“My purpose is not my verbs, my purpose is a person!”

Purposefooled was a timely read as I have been struggling with fighting feelings with what is true. I greatly appreciated Kelly’s assessment that we have been too easily fooled into thinking that our activities give us meaning. Her chapters on Ecclesiastes were rather helpful to consider God’s character in comparison to the fleeting nature of this world. I do think that the last sections were a bit repetitive and could be condensed. Overall, it was a helpful read!

- “Every time we secure our life’s meaning to something we do, we become enslaved…The tasks that hold our purpose become irreplaceable. They become our master. “

- “Do we relish the story God is writing in human history, or do we ask Him to be a supporting character while we write our own narrative? Do we marvel at His creative work all around us or do we ask Him to assist us while we show off in our own studios? Are we eager students of the wise ways of God, or do we use His textbook piecemeal to manufacture our own wisdom?”

- In your presence is fullness of joy Psalm 16:11

- “The work we do, though beneficial and good, can never purchase us the significance we long for.”

- “But Jesus pulled the curtain back and told us it’s not so with his kingdom. In His ecosystem, it matters little what you contribute. It matters little how high you climb in self-sufficiency. What impresses Him far more is what you are able to receive. What awakens His interest is how often you choose neediness over strength.”

- “We live in the wasteland between our magnificent origin and our glorious destination.”

- “If following Him doesn’t feel a little bit like dying, then we should ask, is it Him we’re following?”

- “I am free to delight in the life and work I’ve been given, knowing it matters because the One I was made for gave it to me today…I am not asked to curate my preferred list of good works to do. I’ve been created in Christ for the good works that God has prepared beforehand for me.”

In both the Christian and secular world, we’re bombarded by messaging around “discovering God’s unique calling for our life” or “finding our purpose through self-discovery.” This book excellently uproots these lies and more. It takes the heavy pressure off, the pressure that makes every decision from choosing a college major to deciding where to live and what job to do an infinitely weighty and painful decision. It also takes off the pressure of productivity and hustle and achievement culture. It takes off the pressure to be extraordinary. This book can at times be repetitive but the truths within it are golden. It is a must read for followers of Christ in every season.

Debatably my best read of 2024 so far. The subtitle is a bit evasive from the book's premise: we are created not for verbs but for a noun, Jesus Christ. While I'm not sure if the book dragged on a bit because of the author or because I stopped reading as I moved and started other books, the heart and message of the book is convicting, practical, encouraging, and an all-around breath of fresh peace and worship for our amazing Savior. I think every Christ-follower would benefit from reading at least part of it.

This book was a great reminder that my purpose is a noun (Jesus) not a verb. It is a very counter-cultural perspective and honestly simplifies the “why’s” of my daily tasks. I listened to this book on Libby but I’m definitely going to be purchasing the hard copy of it for my own personal bookshelf🙂

"Purposefooled: Why Chasing Your Dreams, Finding Your Calling, and Reaching for Greatness Will Never Be Enough" by Kelly Needham seems to be a thought-provoking book that challenges the common notion of finding purpose and meaning in life through extraordinary achievements. The author, a Bible teacher, appears to explore the idea that the pursuit of success and chasing after one's dreams might not ultimately fulfill the deep longings of the human heart.

The book appears to address the modern phenomenon of feeling unfulfilled despite chasing after big dreams and external accomplishments. Kelly Needham seems to suggest that our hunger for the extraordinary often leaves us unsatisfied and searching for something deeper. Through her personal experiences and reflections, she seems to guide readers toward a different perspective on purpose—one that focuses on knowing Someone (presumably God) rather than just doing something extraordinary.

"Purposefooled" appears to delve into various aspects of this concept, including the impact of technology on our desires, the biblical foundation for finding meaning in the ordinary, and the idea of living with eternity in mind. The book seems to encourage readers to shift their focus from constantly pursuing the next big thing to finding contentment and significance in the present moment.

If you're interested in exploring a counter-cultural approach to finding purpose and meaning in life—one that emphasizes relationships and a deeper connection with God over external achievements—"Purposefooled" might provide you with valuable insights and a fresh perspective on how to live a purpose-filled life in today's fast-paced world.

This book is full of truths that bring you back to what we are created for! I love that Kelly used scripture throughout the whole book to support what was being said. In the midst of a busy world grasping for meaning and purpose it is so good to be reminded we must hold tight to our real purpose of simply being with our creator. “Be still and know that I am God” Ps 46:10

I loved this book and will recommend to others. I did the audio version which it was perfect for. I do feel like it could have been about half as long as there was a lot of repetition but overall message was good and made me consider new things about "purpose". Key takeaways:

1. Purpose is a noun not a verb. We were made for God not to do things for God. With Mary and Martha, Mary chose what was better - just abiding in God. There is a season to abide and a season to do...but doing is never out ultimate goal.

2. While we were uniquely gifted with certain things...our talents and skills are just part of our story. I am the only person who can be a mother to my 4 children, a wife to my husband, a nieghbor to my neighbor, a friend to those in my community. Insrtead of looking inside to find our gifts, we need to look outside. We are uniquely gifted opportunities and circumstances to share God's love.

3. God is the hero, we are not. So often we do things to get recognition and admiration...but that takes the message away from God and puts the light on us. Every good and perfect gift is from above. When we stop trying to do things for God and allow God to do things through us, amazing things happen.

quote from the book: "As soon as the measurement of our activities is tied to our meaning, we are enslaved. It is 'not' the activities or the numbers associated with them that are problematic. It's our belief that these metrics can infuse us with meaning."

The author gives the clear, Biblical answer to what does give these activities meaning and does not enslave us. It is worth a read, for sure!!

Very important message! Kelly took a step out in faithfulness writing this book. Not a popular or mainstream way of viewing our purpose on this earth, but as Christians we believe our purpose is a Person. The only path to true Christian joy/fulfillment is resting in what God has already done for us, not what we can do for Him or ourselves.

We are made for a person. Easy to say, hard to live out. Appreciated Kelly’s honesty and transparency in sharing her own struggles. Also appreciated how scripture is woven throughout this book and while it helped remind my soul to breathe and rest in Christ’s sovereignty and my hidden identity in Him, it also gave practical advice and actions.

In "Purposefooled," author and Bible teacher Kelly Needham challenges the pursuit of extraordinary lives and redirects readers towards a purpose-filled reality. Her insights are refreshing and deeply rooted in biblical wisdom, particularly resonating in her revelation that our true audience is God Himself, revolutionizing how we approach acts of giving, praying, and fasting in secret.

Needham's exploration into our cultural obsession with significance uncovers a profound truth: true fulfillment lies not in grand achievements but in knowing and serving God faithfully in everyday life. Through personal anecdotes and biblical narratives, she dismantles the myth of "settling" for a mundane existence, showing instead that embracing daily responsibilities can lead to a life of profound purpose.

"Purposefooled" is a timely reminder to reevaluate our desires and ambitions, challenging us to reclaim our imaginations and live intentionally in the present. Needham's practical guidance equips readers to navigate the pressures of modern life with clarity and purpose, offering a roadmap to finding meaning that transcends fleeting worldly pursuits.

Most everyone is looking for some level of purpose in the work that they do, whether in employment or another form of daily work. The problem with this mindset, Needham argues, is that we are not looking far enough to find ultimate purpose. Our purpose must be found in Christ first, and He will inform our sense of purpose and responsibility in any work we do. We should not look for ways to be unique or prominent in our work; instead, we should strive for faithful obedience to the work God calls us to, working hard for His purpose, regardless of any worldly significance that could be attained. I thought the thesis of this book was strong, and it covers a very important topic. Some portions near the middle of the book seemed too ambiguous and could be taken to affirm more worldly understandings of aspiration, but she clarified what she actually meant soon after. I would definitely recommend this book.

This was an encouraging book! Kelly gives good reminders of how our purpose is not found in specific actions or “callings” but in God Himself! I personally appreciated how she addressed our way of thinking - that we have limitless options and can do anything we put our mind to; that we should pursue grand things that change the world. This mindset makes us feel like we’re worthless and our lives don’t matter if we’re not doing big things seen by many people! But a life doing regular things is good and purposeful if we remember that our purpose is in God and not things!
“A deeply purposeful life will not be found in the work we were made for but in the Person we were made for.”

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 simply because it felt a little repetitive in the closing chapters. But it is a good and encouraging book; very relevant to our modern times of social media and “influencers” and constant bombardment of celebrities and news.

This book was wonderful! Kelly provides a simple, Biblical reminder that our purpose is Christ, and that foundation should change the way we approach all of life.

Two favorite quotes: “You are not valuable because of what you can offer the world but simply because God created you in his image. God delights in you as much when you’re sleeping as when you’re working hard, because his affection for you is not based on your activity but on your presence.”

“When I know that life is more about knowing than doing, then I am free to give generous amounts of my time to sitting with Jesus. I am free to stop obsessing about what I accomplished in a given day. I am free to miss out on things and get behind. I am free to be still and know—at the expense of an unchecked to-do list—because the quality of my life is not found in what I’ve achieved but who I’ve enjoyed.”

This book. Is. So. Good. It’s super relatable and very practical. Full of scripture and personal story, the author does a good job of balancing truth with encouragement/grace. The message of the book is powerful. I love how she uses the word verbs: “A purposeful life is not found in your verbs. But in one noun. Jesus”

It’s such a great simple yet powerful way of looking at it. And the way she interweaves Biblical story (of Esther, Rahab, etc) in order to illustrate her points is great.

This book is for the striver, the doer, the perfectionist, the influencer, the behind the scenes person, for every single person. It’s so good and I highly recommend it.

I was given a digital copy in exchange for my review. All thoughts are my own.

Purposefooled: Why Chasing Your Dreams, Finding Your Calling, and Reaching for Greatness Will Never Be Enough by Kelly Needham is an important book for anyone to read. Written by the wife of a successful Christian musician, the author explores what it means to serve and the purpose of your life in big and small things. This book is a great reminder of the value of all we do as done to the Lord. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own. I listened to this book and loved it so much I bought the physical copy. I’ve wrestled with purpose for most of my life. The way it is described in this book helped answer so many of the questions and wrestlings I have with it. Usually books on purpose talk about your dreams, or doing big things, or toss it all about and be content doing hidden things. Not this one, this one gets to the heart of true purpose. Highly recommend if you struggle seem to continually search for meaning in what you do.
