This is a beautiful story about how we're all just people who have the same needs. And fantasy architecture.

This one was so good. It’s a cool fantasy world that focuses on different monsters in a more domesticated life. It was adorable and interesting and I would read more.

So, who doesn’t love a found family story?

More, who doesn’t love a story about a traumatized character learning to trust and appreciate love again through the support and kindness of new friends?

It’s an undefeated storyline.

In addition to the main narrative, this story also offers a wide array of social commentary on issues of class, race, ethnicity, and homelessness—to make a few of the main points. I found the commentary to be both thoughtful and thought-provoking without being too challenging for the main teenage audience. In fact, I believe this commentary would resonate with a wide audience, especially our young people who tend to be more conscious of and compassionate towards social, cultural, and economic issues.

It’s amazing how much dialogue can change when we start discussions with meeting peoples’ basic needs.

I’m pleasantly surprised by this first volume and I’m so fortunate I found it in my local library’s new recommendations section—it’s a great choice for any readers who enjoy manga but may also be looking for a more thoughtful storyline~

The art style and the concept were really good. However, the execution was awful. The main character Soara was not consistent with her character development. Also, the writing fpr the other characters was subpar.

This is the manga equivalent of Violet Evergarden + Do It Yourself!!, where in child soldier finds purpose outside of war, but instead of being a beautiful and sad typist, she finds purpose in helping the targets she was raised and bred to kill. I love these manga that have detailed two-page spreads about a certain instance - for example, the details of the completed house's function. So much attention was given to the details that make this world feel so much more like a rich texture instead of "here's the fantasy world, welcome to it". I'll definitely be looking for volume 2!

What a fun read. The art, the characters (Kirik got me laugh a lot), the story, I really enjoy everything and really like it.
No big plot yet, but again it's fun. The architecture of each monster's house is awesome, each has their unique challenges and I love the before after picture.
Cute funny characters, great art, fun story, yup definitely recommended.

Clearly just an excuse to draw pictures of monster houses, with a paper-thin story and setting attached. This is pretty bad. The fact that is was nominated for awards is baffling

Really more lkle a 4.5 but goodreads is goodreads lol anyway this was a sweet, cozy fantasy! The art style is really cute but also lends itself well to detailed architecture and character designs. Some beginning elements of found family were also really nice and I look forward to seeing how they develop! I'll be looking forward to reading more volumes of this story!

Okay, so there are parts of it that are a little cheesy and trite, but it’s written for kids. It’s a cozy little fantasy about a kid who’s been thrust into a world not like anything she was intensely trained for. It’s got Dungeon Meshi vibes if you substitute cooking for home renovations. And I cannot wait to learn more about the world in following volumes.

This is a jaunty, light-hearted world that solves its problems with humor and whimsy.

The star of the show is the art! Yamaji clearly delights in drawing lots of different types of monsters, giving them some great facial expressions. I love the tiny details in the houses and the characters' outfits: tons of pockets and tools! There's on panel in particular with Kirik loaded up on a bird with tons of building supplies, and it's so charming.

Soara herself is a sticking point. This was only volume one, and she's clearly going to grow and change throughout the series, but in the meantime ... The dwarves call her a bigot, and it's true! She doesn't have any redeeming qualities for me yet and is tough to read about.

I felt like some of the lines from other characters were also harsh at times. I think it's meant to be part of the humor and fun--super blunt statements like "you're all dirty!" come off even harsher in a Japanese context--but for me it made the experience less cozy. In particular, there's a line about goblins having a tribal lifestyle because they're less smart, and that feels icky to me because it's too easy to apply to less developed parts of the world in a thoughtless way.

Final verdict: cute art, but I'm not in love with the characters. This is a series I might pick back up from time to time if I needed something low-effort to read, but I'm not going to make time for it anytime soon.

okay....I kind of loved this!! soara was taught from a young age to basically be a weapon, trained to fight and hate monsters. when she's finally old enough, the war ends, and she's left without a purpose or support system. she happens to run into a group of dwarves that are traveling architects, going around designing and building homes for monsters. as she journeys with them, she learns a lot more about many different kinds of monsters and how her old views may be quite prejudiced...and, we also get glimpses of how terrible her childhood was, making us question the monstrous actions of the humans who raised her.

I always love a good 'who's really the monster here' story, and there are a ton of varied monster species that keep this really interesting. I also really enjoy the before/after of the homes they build! the two-page spread with details on the architecture was very cool. so far, soara is an interesting character - definitely damaged, but she's got promise. the dwarves are my favorite so far though, especially kirik. also, the art here is really great, especially the action shots of soara...very clean and dynamic! and you can't deny the cover here is gorgeous, with the colors and composition.

next volume will hopefully solve the thunder wolf/mermaid romance hardships, and they'll meet the demon king it seems? can't wait!

Soara was an orphan put into training to become a warrior in the human/monster war. But the war ends before she can see battle. She starts wandering the land in search of a home and purpose. She stumbles across a group of dwarves that say they are helping others by remodeling homes. She sticks with them at first, to see if they are telling the truth. And later, well, only she can say why she keeps following and occasionally helping.

This is like a manga fantasy HGTV show. The dwarves either get a call or stumble upon some creatures who need help with their living situations. They remodel, and then present the grand new home that's just perfect. In this volume they remodel a goblin cave, some griffin nests, build a home for a slime, and then, though summoned to help a very powerful creature, take a detour to help a couple with serious problems: a thunderwolf and mermaid in a seemingly doomed marriage. I really like the combo of home remodel and fantasy quest. The artwork in this is quite impressive too. Definitely looking forward to reading more in this series!

Notes on content: No language issues that I remember (maybe 1-2 at most). No sexual content. There are some battles but they are mostly misunderstandings and things get worked out peacefully.

Soara and the House of Monsters is a differend kind of adventure, since it's about architects! I loved this approach and how the war with monsters is no over, finally peace. Soara then is baffled, since she was taught to fight monsters and now there's no need. She has no home and no future until she meets these weird dwarfs. The group builds houses for monsters and Soara is soon with them doing the same. Such a different kind of approach for fantasy and we get to understand the structures and techniques. I don't know how long the series can go with this idea though, since there needs to be a basic plot or it's just repetition after repetition. Can't say I know how this will evolve, but at least the setting is wonderful.

The art is nice and altogether the series looks great. I wish Yamaji had used more time to introduce the characters though, since we don't get to know them enough before we are plunged into the world of architecture for monsters. It's interesting to see where this is going though and I hope the series will stay different till the end.

This is so cute oh my god, it’s about dwarves building monsters nice cozy homes! It’s so cute and makes me laugh. The main character is a human trained to kill monsters, but then she grows up and the war is called off and she doesn’t know what to do now. She stumbles across these dwarves building a home for these goblins and she’s like what are they doing? She starts following them and ends up tagging along with them. The way each home is built is catered to each specific monster’s wants/needs and is so thought out. I loved seeing all the different homes and their unique and specific parts. I also loved that the first few pages were in color and wish the whole thing could be in color. I can’t wait to read the next one! I’ve been wanting to read more cozy fantasy and this is definitely feeling like cozy fantasy. I was squealing because the story is just so cute. “That fateful meeting between the young girl and the dwarves set them traveling across the monster world. And a journey of renovation… began.” I can see a glimmer of found family possibly forming between them as well!

A street-orphan spent basically her whole life training to be the best monster-slayer ever, but when she's finally ready to start...the war ends, and she's told to go enjoy life with her friends & family. But she has none. (I felt that part) Lost and uprooted, she wanders until she stumbles across a group of dwarves who are going around building houses for monsters, specialized to each of their unique needs, and starts first following them around and then lending a hand. Could this be her new purpose?
The tone could have been serious, but is more almost silly, just exploring the fantasy monsters' world and basically being a mind-experiment on how you would make the perfect home for a group of goblins, or a griffin, or a slime.
Recommended for fans of Delicious in Dungeon or for readers interested in a low-stakes, exploration-based fantasy adventure.

Content concerns: no swearing, no nudity, no drugs or alcohol; some fantasy violence but no gore; glimpses of Soara's harsh childhood training may upset readers triggered by child abuse (physical and mental/emotional, but not sexual)

I love these craft based fantasy adventure series (like Dungeon Meshi ) and Soara and the House of Monsters is no exception! In this opening volume we meet Soara and get a bit of her sad backstory (orphan, never known kindness, raised by knights with the sole purpose of slaying monsters) but the story tips on it's head when suddenly the monster war is over! Untrusting & lost Soara wanders into a new adventure, 'befriend?' some dwarves, & gets pulled into the construction business! We're still getting out footing here but the format is solid & I'm enjoying the slow building of trust between our main characters. Can't wait for book 2!

4.5! I remember reading the scanlations and really enjoying it and to be able to read this officially is only making this more enjoyable! Yamaji writes a great first volume. The main characters are fairly unexplored aside from the MC but the real draw for me writing-wise is the creativity in the architecture and scenarios. The conflicts have fun set-ups and enjoyable payoffs. Yamaji's art is also spectacular here with a lively almost story-book or Dragon Quest campiness quality to it at times that is gorgeous and brimming with energy and life.

This is a really fun, humorous manga involving a young woman who has been raised to fight monsters, only to find that the war with monsters has ended just as she completed her training. She soon falls in with a group of monsters dedicated to building homes for their brethren. The story has both humor and heart, as Soara learns to abandon her prejudices as she works with the monsters, while the monster homes are not only beautifully rendered, but also well thought out to address the needs of the monsters living in them.

I found this manga both original and heartwarming. Soara, trained to become the kingdom’s greatest monster hunter, suddenly loses her purpose when the war ends overnight. As she wanders aimlessly, she encounters a group of dwarf architects who design custom homes for monsters—creatures now more interested in cozy houses than in fighting humans.
The artwork is gorgeous, the characters are simple yet nuanced, and the setting feels fresh and almost fairy-tale–like. A series I’ll definitely keep reading—such a wonderful discovery.

Cute and Cozy

Fantasy settings but dealing with every day things seems to be my niche and this is hitting the right spots. I particularly like the monster designs as many a reminiscent of children’s books which works well with the kind of story we’re dealing with.

Only slight issue is that Soara herself is a bit flat with a stock backstory but I’m interested to see where this journey goes!

Soara and the House of Monsters was such an enjoyable read! I didn't expect to like it this much and it's definitely a series I would purchase!

The concept is really interesting : Dwarves travelling in the monster world to build/renovate houses for other monsters, after seeing human homes and wanting some for themselves.

It's funny, an easy read, the illustrations are well made and the fantasy world was a fun one to immerse myself in.

I recommend this series!
