“We never know the worth of water until the well is dry.” (Thomas Fuller) Ben and his crew have come a long way since they first began their dystopian road trip from hell. But hard learned lessons and discovering what it takes to survive in a world that doesn’t tolerate the weak or unprepared has molded them into a cohesive team. With the eastern slope of the Rockies almost on the horizon, Ben and the others must remain more vigilant than ever. If the highway has taught them anything, it’s to never let their guard down. Danger is never far away in a world where their only assurance is that the next day will be harder than the last. Ben must rally the troops and push on toward Colorado, while trying to navigate a gauntlet of murderous bandits, dwindling resources, and a doomsday cult leader who would like nothing more than to make sure they never see home again.
Like the other books in the series, this is extremely short and makes it harder to engage in the story. The plot elements are becoming more repetitive and even Ben is reminded of past encounters with the moonshiners. A pseudo-religious, conman has been done many times before and this works out about the same as most every other book that has done this. The saving grace is that the writing and editing are generally decent, but I'm starting to not care if these guys ever get home-or that I will simply be too old to care.
Honestly the unrealistic scenarios in these books are driving me nuts, from book 1 this author has just had Ben the dad become this Ultra Instinct driven super soldier that never makes a mistake and always comes out on top! No matter is he hasn’t slept, ate or drank he can kill people with near perfect accuracy 🤦♀️
Ben almost drowned in this book all 6 of them were going without water and he was showing signs of heat stroke yet they defended and got away from one group of bad guys by the winery… right into the hands of another kidnapping scene.
He had mentioned they skipped eating because he had a bad feeling by the winery, then they lost all their fresh water. This new place spiked their water with drugs from their poppy farm to keep people complacent. They would be too sick to fight especially since the children were just drugged yesterday by the older couple.
I’m pulling my hair out with these books! Now again best case scenario the sister of the man who runs this well run compound just happens to leave note letting Ben know about the drugs in the water, then give his family fresh water. Draws a map of the entire compound with key information on escape. Like come on within seconds of meeting Ben she decided to do all this they had just arrived and she wouldn’t know if she could trust him that fast!
Whatever even though the dad was still suffering from heat stroke, dehydration & exhaustion he was able to sneak about the compound alone and killed men without getting caught. (Yes the soldiers were at the gate trying to keep another group from getting in so most were occupied) but come on all the regular people there were made to be the eyes & ears someone would of reported something or tried to stop him.
Whatever yet again they had everything stolen but they got it all back, no one’s hurt & they got out of the compound safe and clear well it got taken over by the other group.

Another good addition to the series, although the premise was obvious, as was the outcome. This feels like the author envisions that the protagonists getting home would be the end of the series, and so is prolonging their journey home with a series of events which are now becoming repetitive, which is a shame because I feel that the story could really improve once they returned home and their experiences from there are told.
Another extension of the story would be to develop the female characters a little more, introducing some cunning and ingenuity to balance the combat survival skills of the main male lead.
Overview: The journey remains calm until a routine stop for water erupts into a gunfight, which Ben suspects is a preemptive strike from hostile winery owners. Barely escaping, the group presses on and discovers the Sanctuary—a seemingly safe haven for survivors. Their relief fades as they uncover the truth: the settlement is actually a poppy farm, its preacher-like leader controlling the community by poisoning the water supply. Ben forms an unlikely bond with the preacher’s sister, who, haunted by their shared past, turns against him. With her help, the group seizes the chaos of a looter attack to escape the Sanctuary’s grip.

I have read a lot of apocalyptic books and this series was in my top 5. I liked the special attention from the main character's thought process. Often not as detailed . I think that is what pulled me in to start with. I want to read of their final journey home. I do not know if that is in the works. I wish if something happened like this people would be there for each other but with no law, criminals would become the powerful. And the desperate would try to come up with any means possible b to survive. Very sad but true.
It took 14 books but the main character finally got dumb. He says all along that a particular building is took tidy to be empty, and yet he doesn’t move on. I’ll give him one pass, as he played things intelligently once they got to sanctuary, where a lot happened. Sanctuary is similar to many post apocalyptic novels as one power-hungry man tries to set himself up as a despot. There’s no real surprises here, but it was a good installment with a lot of plot advancement with a lot happening.
I enjoyed this book and have enjoyed the entire series. I will continue to read each new book. I am about ready for them to get home and see what they have to deal with there. I'm sure there will be plenty of problems to write about then. This book was very similar to an earlier one and only so much can happen on a trip, so please move the story along.
As always too short, the story is so good I want to read page after page. It’s been a long journey, but we’re not home yet. I never want this series to end. The characters are so likable that you fall in love with each one. 2 adults, 2 teens, 2 kids and how many dogs 🐕 🐩 🐶. Some laughs, some tears, some frightful, scary moments.
I really enjoy reading these books I can’t stand to wait for the next book to come out. I just have to know………what is going to happen next. Bruno you write an outstanding story ….I so hope that I will have passed before this all comes to pass for I know I am so weak compared to your whole group
I absolutely love the Dark Road series by Bruno Miller! With most series by the 6th book you are ready for the series to be over. Yes the books are on the shorter side but in my opinion, keeps the “story” limited to a couple incidents versus long winded boring storylines. Only challenge is waiting for the next release, it takes a minute to remember the characters. Can’t wait for #15
Such an exciting series. I hate not having another book to download. Ben and his family are survivors. They faced off gangs, drought conditions and mechanical breakdowns. Ben crosses the country to find his two younger children while rescuing others along the way. Spent many a night up too late to see what happens next. They are not home yet....
I gave this book one star not because it wasn’t good but because it did not finish. Did the author get bored writing after 14 books? I put in a lot of hours reading this series to find out what happens when they get home but they never did. I would have never started if I knew it would not be completed.
When the series first started the characters were interesting and the story pulled you in, as the series progresses its the same situation over and over. Meet bad guy, beat bad guy and keep on moving. I don't think I'm going to continue the series.
This series is one of my favorites! It has continuous action and just keeps you guessing. Ben's main goal is to get his family back home to Colorado at all costs. His inner turmoil on the violence and the effect it is having on everyone is palpable but he will do what it takes to get them all back home. He's not there yet and really not sure what he will find when they get there, but there is really no where else to go.. Impatiently waiting for the next one.
I so appreciate Miller story telling appreciate the fact that he can admit that the people in his story are not super heroes but they hurt and get tried and are never 100 percent even after they win the day very believable story
Tired of the series, the in/out of trouble roller coaster. Enjoyed the first books but then it became too repetitive. Should have got them home at least three books back. Sorry but I won’t be reading any more of this series.
This has been worthy of a 5+ rating right up to the last page when I realized the author just left it hanging. If this is truly last book, I am extraordinarily disappointed. If the author is simply finished then I strongly encourage him to write short series stories.
Really good series ,characters and story line are good ,but there is a lot of blurb that goes on a bit but still well worth the read ,got quite attached to the characters and works really well ,soo looking forward to reading more .
"Dark Road" is a great series!! This series draws you in and you don't want to leave all the characters you've grew to love reading about! There's no bad language or sex scenes and I like that! So pull you up a seat and dig in it's great!!!
Ben and the group get into another bad situation when they run into a cult. They are almost out of gas and water. Ben has to use his skills to get the group out. I’m ready for the next book please!
As with the other books in this series, the author spends way too much time with the thought processes of the main character, Ben. The adventures were very exciting and mostly unique, except for this last book, which seems to repeat a very similar challenge in an earlier book.
Wow! Just when you think things are going good, something happens. From the ambush while trying to get water to ending up in a cult/compound. I wonder what will happens next. Will they make it home without further incident?
I loved this book by Bruno Miller. I also loved these characters. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I would recommend this book and all of this Bruno’s books.
I have read the entire series. Sanctuary didn't let me down. Ben and his son remind me of Batman and Robin. I can't wait for the next book in the Dark Road series.
