Regency Wallflowers #3

Dawn's Untrodden Green

Rate this book
Not much happens in Theodosia Stapleton's tiny Northumberland village. Certainly not to her. She has resigned herself to spinsterhood, caring for her ailing mother in the home of her grandfather, known to the locals as "General Contrary." When her dear friend dies and leaves behind a daughter, it's simple enough to take the child into her own quiet world. That is, until her ward's famous uncle unexpectedly arrives and throws Theo's tidy orbit completely off-kilter. Fame was the last thing Daniel Balfour sought when he fought in the Peninsular War. But his brave exploits caught the attention of the King, and now the honors he was given hound him everywhere . . . even on his rushed trip to rescue his orphaned niece. Theo's quick wit and warm smile reassure him that Rebecca is in good hands, and he finds himself free to swiftly return to London and his responsibilities. But those caring hands are beginning to look like they could also safely hold his heart, and he's tempted to linger. Unfortunately, marriage is simply not in the cards; the army is spouse enough for him. Then an accident and a scandal lead both Theo and Daniel to discover that their best-laid plans may not have been what God designed for them after all.

Dawn’s Untrodden Green, the third in the Regency Wallflower Series, is a heartwarming tale that’s sure to inspire and delight readers. Theodora’s determination to protect her friend’s daughter makes her an admirable heroine and a worthy intended for Captain Daniel Balfour. They share delightful banter, and Carolyn’s descriptions bring the era and Northumberland setting to life making this a memorable story to savor.

(Goodreads made my rating a one-star, which is crazy! *glares at Goodreads* Thank you, Madi, for giving me the heads-up about it.)

I have always wanted to read a book by Carolyn Miller, and this one definitely did not disappoint!

Not enough reviewers have mentioned it, but the writing style is SO beautiful. The author has a talent that is rarely seen these days, and in some moments, I felt like I was really reading one of the classics.

Theodosia and Daniel are also fantastic together, and I found the faith that the characters display to be both encouraging and inspiring. From the moment Theo was introduced, she has been a loving and compassionate role model, and I am so happy to see her get her happy ending with Captain Balfour. If you love character-driven stories, this is the one for you.

I would not only recommend Dawn’s Untrodden Green to adult readers who have an interest in romance, historical fiction, inspirational fiction, Christian fiction, and/or the Regency Era, but also to anyone who is simply an avid appreciator of good literature. 😉

Dawn’s Untrodden Green is delightful. It seems each book I read in this series is my favorite. The Regency period is so fascinating, and Ms. Miller’s characters are lively and believable.

I liked Theo from the get-go. Her wit and compassion shine brightly, I sympathized for her, and connected with her heart. Daniel is an interesting man, and I rooted for his relationship with Theo.

I love when a story surprises me as this one did. I enjoyed the lightheartedness as well as the deeper moments, and the themes of faith, love, and redemption are so inspiring and rewarding.

Stellar writing, wonderful characters, gorgeous cover, and perfect title. Another win by a gifted storyteller.

First Line: Stapleton Court of Wooler had, in its day, oft been described as a monument to quiet pretension.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It felt very authentic and had the pacing of a Jane Austen novel.

One of the things that I liked right away about this book was finding out that Captain Balfour was a rather plain and normal looking man. He was not particularly tall, did not have a overly handsome face, and even had a bit of receding hairline. His appearance was not what the town gossips expected a war hero to look like and that lead to all manner of subterfuge throughout the novel.

It also exposed the nature of many of the friends and acquaintances of the Stapleton family. I felt compassion for Theodosia in all of the ways that she had been treated as “less than” by many of those same people and by her horrible sister, as well, due to a birthmark on her face.

It was heartwarming to see the way Theo and Daniel viewed each other. Daniel hardly noticed the mark on Theo’s face and thought her beautiful both inside and out. Theo recognized that Daniel was not what one would call a handsome man, however, she was drawn to his wit, sense of humor, and honorable nature.

I loved the way Theo and Daniel grew to know and care about each other as they spent time together. The two of them were many times unsure of the other’s actual feelings, leading both of them to question if the feelings were one sided. But, never fear. All ended splendidly with a beautiful happily ever after for these two worthy characters.

(4.5 stars)

I LOVE this book. I am so happy that I was chosen to be on the launch team and get an ARC copy of this wonderfully delightful book.

I have the desire to read everything by Carolyn Miller now after reading this series.

First can we start with the main female character's name, Theodosia? I love that name. I just needed to point that out. 😅

Next, the romance is just beautiful. I love when authors write romance where the characters fall in love while being friends first. Daniel and Theo just work so well together. 😍

I liked the secret keeping aspect of this story a lot. It brought out Theodosia's sass to her neighbors (whew, I was cheering her on quite a few times). Also, an unwanted love interest who just can't get the point? Yes, please! An awful sister? Continue! A grump of a grandpa? Seriously, just sign me up right now.

Daniel has some seriously good and romantic lines but my favorite is "Would you really be willing to consider a man who might not have a grand house or income but would love you fiercely all his days?" My heart!

Definitely read this wonderful book!

Shenanigans, gossip, and emotional calamity ensues when a well-intentioned plan goes a tad awry. Will two hearts be broken in the process?

PLOT:
The plot was nicely-paced in a gentle, slow manner that allows the reader to soak in the characters' every day and really "meet" the characters where they're at.

SETTING:
I found the setting delightful, if not a bit waterlogged. The description of fog and mist and cool days almost made me want to travel there.

CHARACTERS:
Theodosia, or Theo, was the most relatable. She didn't fit society's standards for beauty, and she was practical and no-nonsense. In a way, she reminded me of myself. Daniel, too, was a great character. I liked his humility.

The slew of secondary characters were solid as well. The cantankerous, growly old goat known as Grandfather really grew on me, and I think he did admirably as the book progressed. The cast of pompous toads, bumptious cads, and prattling peahens, otherwise known as fellow villagers, were easy to dislike. Odious cretins.

FAITH:
The faith is the strongest part of this book. I thoroughly appreciated the constant reminder that man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his path. Characters pray, attend church and hear good sermons, and grow in their faith.

WHAT I WASN'T FOND OF:
The prose was too loquacious, overall, for my preference. While it certainly provided some utterly hilarious descriptions of certain biddies and trouble-causing folk, I had to reread many pages because there were just so many words often in use where only a handful would suffice. I don't know if that's typical to Regency books, though, so Regency lovers likely won't have any problem with it.

There is a hint about the marriage night that exceeded my comfort. While it likely won't bother others and may go over younger readers' heads, and I wouldn't say it's necessarily inappropriate, it did jolt me.

OTHER:
I want to sing this book praises for so clearly illustrating that appearance and looks do not increase our value. Alas, I sing as well as a strangled frog, so I will put my thoughts into writing instead. Neither Theo nor Daniel meet society's physical expectations. Theo is plain with a birthmark, and Daniel hasn't the tall, dark, and hunky appearance the village thinks all heroes possess. Instead, these two are unremarkable in society's opinion. But Miller deftly illustrates that our worth is in God, and not determined by some random selection of physical traits deemed more desirable than others. It is a reminder everyone needs at some point in their life.

CONCLUSION:
A novel filled with faith, humor, befuddling blockheaded buffoons, and romance, I believe every Regency reader will enjoy Dawn's Untrodden Green.

I fail to find words that adequately express how wonderful my reading experience was. Dawn's Untrodden Green is the perfect conclusion to the Regency Wallflowers series. Themes of contentment, family loyalty, charity, duty, and faith are presented with charm and wit against the often drizzly backdrop of this cozy rural community. The cast includes an impressive spectrum of colorful characters from grumpy to sunshine, rascal to timid, and much more. I highly recommend this series and eagerly anticipate future stories penned by Ms. Miller.

Sweet regency romance, about two characters who have ruled love out for their lives, but also trust Gods direction in their lives. When their predictable lives merge, both try to suppress their feelings, being convinced love is not in Gods plan for them. Will they be able to follow God more than their own expectations?

While I did enjoy the characters and the story, it did seem to drag out a bit. I felt this could have been told in a novella. Out of all the books in this series, this one was my least favorite. The other two were eerie and haunting and dark and heavy. This was was very light without much heavy emotion. I did read the authors note, that because the first two books were heavier, she wanted to make this one lighter, but as I reader I think I come to expect a certain feeling from series and to have two books follow one pattern and the third be different, is just not my preference.

I absolutely loved this book! Regency romance is becoming my new favorite genre! The imagery brought Wooler, Northumberland, to life!

Theodosia is one of my favorite characters that I've read about this year! She's caring, compassionate, loving, forgiving, and giving! Her loyalty to her family is admirable.
Daniel is complex. He's a hero, a soldier who is thrust into a circumstance that he's not prepared for. He figures out that he longs for love. The crusty old General was endearing to me because he reminded me of my grandfather!

The story is unique and full of surprises! It's also full of faith in God! The love story is sweet and had me celebrating!

All in all, this is a must read! I look forward to reading more books by Carolyn Miller!

Spinster, Orphan, Caregiver, Friends to Lovers, I could continue to list all the tropes that make this book worthy of everyone buying it and reading it. However I will just tell you why Dawn's Untrodden Green is needed on your bookshelf. Dawn's Untrodden Green is the third book in the Regency Wallflower series, written by Carolyn Miller. Each book can be read as a stand alone book but reading the whole series would be better because each book just keeps getting more stupendous then the next. The plot was captivating which showed how things do not always turn out according to how we plan life out for ourselves. The cast of characters made the story fascinating, I enjoyed Theo and Daniel and was rooting for them the whole time. Theo was kind hearted, selfless and had a quick wit while Daniel was charitable, gracious and served others.

The author Carolyn Miller did a magnificent job writing this book. I am excited for what she is going to write next and I encourage every reader to buy her books, especially those who love clean, historical and regency romance books

I am so happy that I was chosen to be on the launch team and get an E- ARC copy of this book.

I have enjoyed this series. I will admit this book did not grab me at first and I was unsure if I would enjoy it, but that shifted about 1/3 of the way in. I grew to love Theo and Daniel.. and other characters. Felt compassion as they struggled with their own demons and fought to keep their feelings at bay. I confess the end result was a bit predictable, though the means was unique and unexpected. Even so, I believe I would have been very disappointed and given this book a very low rating if it had ended with a different result!

I love Ms Miller’s stories set in Regency England. This time Wallflower, Theodosia, has a blemish that has set her firmly upon the shelf in a very small community. This does not diminish her servant heart. When her neighbor, best friend Clara dies, she takes on the care of 16 year old Rebecca until her uncle Daniel can fetch her. Daniel Balfour is a war hero and upon arrival wants nothing more than to stay out of the limelight.
The characters are delightful as is the banter between Theo and Daniel. They are both seeking the will of God and think they have their lives planned out, but that remains to be seen. Ms. Miller captures the flavor of the times in the customs and language and the rich details of the setting, transporting you back in time.
A fitting end to a delightful series, with an uplifting and joyful message of hope.

Carolyn Miller's "Dawn's Untrodden Green" is a heartwarming and tender tale of unexpected love set in a tranquil Northumberland village. With endearing characters, delightful wit, and a touch of scandal, this novel explores the twists and turns that challenge even the best-laid plans, revealing the hand of destiny in matters of the heart.

Theodosia Stapleton, known as Theo, leads a quiet life caring for her ailing mother in the home of her eccentric grandfather, General Contrary. When a dear friend passes away, leaving behind an orphaned daughter, Theo readily welcomes the child into her world. However, everything changes when the girl's famous uncle, Daniel Balfour, unexpectedly arrives, disrupting Theo's peaceful existence.

Daniel, a war veteran seeking solace from his newfound fame, entrusts Theo with the care of his niece, Rebecca. Theo's warmth and quick wit immediately captivate Daniel, and he finds himself drawn to her. Despite their growing attraction, Daniel believes marriage is not in his future, given his dedication to the army. Meanwhile, Theo grapples with her own doubts and insecurities, uncertain if she can overcome her spinsterhood and embrace the possibility of love.

As Theo and Daniel navigate their conflicting emotions, an accident and a scandal disrupt their lives, forcing them to confront their true desires and carefully laid plans. Miller masterfully crafts a story filled with tender moments, heartfelt discoveries, and the undeniable intervention of fate. Through her engaging prose, readers are transported to 19th century Northumberland , feeling intimately connected to the characters and their emotional journey.

One of the novel's greatest strengths lies in its well-drawn characters. Theo is a relatable and sympathetic heroine, her resilience and selflessness shining through as she cares for her mother and the young Rebecca. Daniel, haunted by his past and grappling with conflicting obligations, is a compelling and complex hero. The chemistry between them is palpable, and their evolving relationship is beautifully portrayed, filled with both moments of tenderness and captivating banter.
I loved how they bonded over the plays in Shakespeare’s Henriad (Henry IV Part I & II and Henry V). These are some of my favourite plays: I could love a man who loved Henry V. Sighs.
The plot unfolds at a steady pace, occasionally it meanders, especially during the introduction of historical context and background information. I like this kind of slow-burn romance with a detailed plot and backdrop, although it might not be according to everyone’s taste.

Altogether, Carolyn Miller delivers a delightful and enchanting tale of love's unexpected arrival with echoes of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. With its engaging characters, heartfelt storytelling, and the realization that life's plans can often be reshaped by destiny and God, this novel will captivate fans of historical romance and leave them longing for more.

Thanks to Kregel for approving me for this title on Netgalley. This did not impact my opinions and I was not required to write a review.

Carolyn Miller has become a favorite author, especially her Regency era romance novels. Dawn’s Untrodden Green, whose title is based on a line from a poem, may just be at the top of the list. Neither the hero nor the heroine are what readers expect in a romance novel. Yes, Daniel is a military hero but he is not the tall, charming, and handsome man the townspeople are anticipating. And most cannot see past the birthmark that mars the beauty of Theodosia’s face and have relegated her to spinster status.

This book is delightful! I loved the wry humor of both Theodosia and Daniel and the almost instant connection and understanding between them. It was obvious that there would be a romance but I had no idea how much fun it would be to watch it develop.

There are more than one lesson to be learned from Dawn’s Untrodden Green. One is the obvious not to judge by outward appearance and the other is how difficult it can be to keep up with an untruth once it is told.

Do yourself a favor and grab a copy or even the entire series. I do not think you will be sorry.

I adored the first book in this series, and just realized I skipped the middle one 🤦‍♀️. But this book was a struggle. Certain phrases and aspects of the storyline were repeated to the point that I wanted to roll my eyes. The ending was somewhat satisfying, but still a bit muddled and sudden.

However, there were some very bright spots, with witty conversation and snappy comebacks. Faith played a large role in the story. Both characters were not physically beautiful, which is always refreshing to read. And some literary references were fun to see.

Dawn's Untrodden Green is a delightful addition to the Regency Wallflowers series. Each book can be read as a standalone. While some of the topics in the first two books were rather serious, this book took a light-hearted, heartwarming turn.

The story is not driven by plot, but rather is character-driven. The witty, lighthearted banter between the hero and heroine, reminiscent of Georgette Heyer, will keep readers entertained throughout the story. I found the heroine, Theo, utterly delightful with her feisty yet sweet spirit. Theo and Daniel are both content in the path their respective lives have taken, yet start to wonder if there might be a new 'untrodden' path ahead. Ms. Miller has penned another sweet faith-filled romance that will appeal to fans of Julie Klassen.

I discovered Carolyn Miller on Instagram and was delighted to be a part of the launch team for her latest! This is the third book in the Regency Wallflowers series but it seems they all focus on different characters so I didn’t feel confused by having started with this one.

Theodosia Stapleton, or Theo as she prefers, lives with her mother and grandfather after he took them in when his son, her father, died. She’s content being a spinster and caring for her relatives, but does long for travel and adventure.

After Theo’s close friend and neighbor Clara passes away, the family home offers a place of comfort and security for her teenage daughter Rebecca. When the town learns Becky’s next of kin, her mother’s brother, is a celebrated war hero, they can’t wait for him to come to their humble town and take Becky under his wing.

Of course things don’t go as planned once the Captain arrives, Becky is so attached to Theo and doesn’t want to leave her friends and move away with an uncle she hardly knows. The uncle, Captain Daniel Balfour, proves surprising to Theo when he first arrives in town. It doesn’t take long for Theo’s wit and fiesty candor to win Daniel over, but both of them have their own struggles and it seems they will never just admit to the other how they feel. Themes of family, faith, love, and courage are all big parts of this heartwarming novel and I can’t wait to read more from this author. The Regency time period, the beautiful English country setting, and likeable characters made this a wonderful story.

Thank you to Carolyn Miller and Kregel Publications for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

A Regency-era romance filled with humor, compassion, and hope . . .

Set in 1812 in Northumberland, England, this story will bring fans of this genre a cadre of interesting characters to follow as they weave their way through grief and mishaps on the way to a satisfying conclusion. One of my favorite aspects of this story was that it is filled with subtle humor and quick wit. The main characters don't hesitate to poke fun at society's rigid standards and customs.

The author's 'Regency Wallflowers' series features strong women who have been overlooked by society because of their quirky personality or unusual appearance. In this installment, Theodosia Stapleton, is acting as the lady of Stapleton Court because her mother is infirmed. Her father is deceased, and they live with her dour and demanding grandfather who does not shy away from sharing his opinion about everything that happens in and around his home.

Never married, Theo has given up hope of finding a man who will love her for who she is. She is a compassionate, kind woman who gives of herself to aid others who are grieving their own losses.

This plot is filled with subterfuge, gossip, and interference from meddling members of the community. Several characters seem to siphon all of the oxygen out of the scenes in which they appear and add drama to the plot.

As a fan of historical fiction, I enjoy the author's ability to immerse readers into this time period and setting with her descriptions of fashion, society events, and daily routines around Stapleton Court and in the village.

This story is completely clean in language and content. A strong faith thread runs throughout the story.

I received a copy of the book from the publisher through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.

What a delight!

Carolyn Miller's latest Regency Wallflower book, Dawn's Untrodden Green, brings together spinster Theodosia Stapleton and Captain Daniel Balfour with an orphaned child. Both Theo and Daniel thought they knew what the future held for them, but as they come to realize, plans can change.

I enjoyed my time with Dawn's Untrodden Green and the characters within. Miller writes in a way that brings them and their circumstances to life with ease, and overall, their story is lighthearted and fun, while still offering challenging and heartfelt moments. For readers that enjoy regency romance, this Regency Wallflower book is definitely worth the read.

This story was what I love about regency romances; strong hero and heroine, witty banter, and sweet romance against the societal constraints. Right from the start I loved Theo and Daniel. They had a great strength of character, were kind and considerate, and had a deep faith. Both of them were considered plain by society’s standards but their true beauty was within and that shined throughout as they fell in love with each other.

Of course there had to be characters to dislike along the way and there were quite a few of them. I loved when these characters would get put in their place by the sharp wit of the main characters. This was my favorite book of the series.

This is the third book in this series that I have read. As a series, I have enjoyed each book, which stands alone as a story, but weaves in previous characters. Turning specifically to this book, it was probably my least favorite of the three, simply because it seemed to move at a slower pace and then speed to the conclusion. I would have preferred the author to expand on the ending more (and give more details on the future of the main characters). That being said, it was still an enjoyable read for those who love the Regency era.

Whenever I pick up a book written by Carolyn Miller, I’m transported back to my love of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer. I enjoy Miller’s contemporary romances, but there is something special about her regency stories.

Dawn’s Untrodden Green has much to recommend it. A hero and heroine that aren’t society’s picture of beauty? Check. Witty banter? Check. Our couple kept together and a hint of scandal? Check and check. Faith front and center? Yep, that’s in there too.

I absolutely loved the connection that forms between Daniel and Theodosia. Both see underneath appearances to the other’s heart. And I was pleasantly surprised by Theo’s grandfather. This book is more light-hearted than the other two books in the series, but just as enjoyable.

What a delightful and touching Regency Romance! I loved it so much! I think it’s my favorite in the Regency Wallflowers Series! It’s more lighthearted than the previous two, which I also happened to love!
Theodosia Stapleton has resigned herself to be a spinster, caring for her ailing mother and grandfather, General Stapleton, also called by the villagers as General Contrary, because of his strong opinions and harsh manners. Nothing ever happens in Wooler, her tiny Northumberland town. Until her dear friend Clara Mannering, her neighbor, passes away, leaving her teenage daughter orphaned and alone in the Mannering Manor. Without hesitation, Theo takes Rebecca -Becky- under her wing and they become dear friends, while waiting for her only relative to make himself known: a famous uncle who fought in the Peninsular War and his exploits were even recognized by the King of England himself. When Becky’s uncle unexpectedly arrives, Theo’s ordinary life takes a turn for adventure.
Captain Daniel Balfour was never looking for fame when he served his country. His life has always been in the Army and his purpose is continuing to serve his country in the military. But the passing of his sister, and the fate of his only niece make it necessary to travel to Mannering to deal with the sad situation and make things right for his niece. But his fame has been spread and people in town expect his arrival as if he were the King himself. So, when he arrives to Wooler, he pretends to be a man sent by the famous Captain in his stead. When Theo meets Captain Balfour, she agrees with him to help him hide his true identity from the villagers. As Daniel gets to know his niece’s ward, he realizes Becky has been in the best of hands. Theo is kind and compassionate, and full of humorous wit. He had never enjoyed a woman’s company more. But times comes to return to London with his niece, and he finds he will miss this newfound friend. But an accident changes Daniel’s plans for a quick return to London and benefiting from Stapleton Court -and Theo’s- hospitality. Can this woman who is warming his heart change his mind about him being married to his military career? Can God have other plans, so different from what he had always thought to be his fate?
This was a wonderful story that I completely enjoyed! The plot is pretty good, and captivating, but it’s the cast of characters that made the story fascinating! I completely fell in love with Theo and Daniel. Theo was kind hearted, selfless and with a quick wit. Daniel was truly a hero, but I loved how he despised being praised and adored, and preferred to pass unnoticed and enjoy the company of true friends. I love how their relationship grows -and their mutual admiration and feelings- and how they enjoy each other’s company. Their witty banter made me smile and laugh out loud. My heart ached at how they felt the need to hide their feelings, due to propriety and society’s expectations. The romance is slow burning, but so sweet and endearing. I also liked the secondary characters: Becky, General Stapleton, Musgrave, etc. The depiction of the era in the Northumberland village is so realistic and accurate. I felt completely transported through time through the author’s writing style. It felt like the perfect “Regency” romance. Fans of Georgette Heyer, Julie Klassen, Michelle Griep, and many similar fantastic authors will love Carolyn Miller’s Regency Wallflowers Series!
There's also an inspiring message about trusting God with your life and to guide your path, even if it's different from what you ever imagined.
The ending was so heartwarming, I was sad for the book to end and to say goodbye to such endearing characters! All in all, a wonderful Regency Romance very worth reading! I highly recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the Publisher but wasn't required to post a positive review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

This is a review for Carolyn Miller's newest release called Dawn's Untrodden Green. This is a review for NetGalley. This book hooked me from the very beginning, and I loved the story all the way through! It has romance, but not too much, mystery, excitement, great characters, an interesting plot, and it is just a great story overall! I love Carolyn Miller's books, and this one became one of my favorites, and I don't say that often! I finished it quickly because it was a great story! So I give it 5 out of 5 stars, and highly recommend it! I also recommend her previous books as well in this series, but you do not need to read them to understand this story, but I recommend them as well!

Our story begins in Northumberland, England, in 1812, with Theodosia Stapleton, who is 31, and who has reserved herself to what she thought was spinsterhood! She lives with her mother, and her eccentric and outspoken gentleman Grandfather, whose different moods keep them all hopping! Theo finds herself becoming a temporary ward to her best friend's teenage daughter, Rebecca, because her friend has passed away, and she must help her adjust to an uncle who is coming to take Rebecca to London. Theo has never met this uncle, who is rumored to be a military hero, but she is not sure if she can trust this man to care for Rebecca, so her quiet life seems to be slipping away, and Theo isn't sure this is going to be a good situation for any of them!

Captain Daniel Balfour, the famed war hero, finds himself needing to return home due to the death of his sister, and must assume responsibility for his teenage niece, Rebecca. Daniel has no idea how to raise a young lady, but plans to just come back home, sell the house he and his sister grew up in, bring Rebecca back to London and leave her to the care of an elderly aunt, and head back into the safety of the military. He is a man who wants to live life with little fuss, but life doesn't always work out as planned, but because of his bravery in serving his country, he has become famous, and in London, finds himself on everyone's guest list! So much for a quiet life!

Once Daniel gets back to where he grew up, he finds himself in need of going incognito, because right away word of his coming has reached the area, and the society ladies begin to plan invitations to show off the famed captain, but all Daniel wants to do is to get home, get the house ready to be sold, sell it, pick up Rebecca, and then get back to London as soon as possible. When goes to pick up Rebecca, he meets Theodosia, and she and her family agree to keep his identity quiet, and he assumes the roll of Captain Balfour's servant who has come to pick up Rebecca, and return her to London. But Daniel gets injured while preparing the house to be sold, and finds himself needing to convalesce at Theo's home, and trespasses into her quiet world, which he never planned, nor does he want, and which delays his return to London while he recovers from his injury. He must adjust to these new plans, trust that the Lord knows what He is doing, which leads him to get to know Rebecca, and also into a friendship with Theo, but maybe that isn't such a bad thing! Rebecca doesn't want to leave Theo or her family, so all this turmoil might just work in her favor! But you must read the rest of the story to find out what God has in store for all three of these characters, and I believe you will enjoy it as much as I did, for it really is good!

As I said, I loved this book, and Carolyn Miller remains one of my favorite authors! It is clear through her stories that she has a strong faith in the Lord, and always weaves Him wonderfully into her stories, and I really love that! So I highly recommend this book, and I look forward to her next one!

Dawn's Untrodden Green
by Carolyn Miller
Publisher: Kregel Publications
Series: Regency Wallflowers Book 3
Rated: 3
Obtain: Borrow
Back of the Book: “Not much happens in Theodosia Stapleton's tiny Northumberland town.
Then an accident and a scandal lead both Theo and Daniel to discover that their best-laid plans may not have been what God designed for them after all.”

Impressions: This was an enjoyable read because I felt my vocabulary grow with each page I read. There were many descriptions used that caused me to pull out my dictionary. The story explored how a seemingly small white lie can become a web of destruction. It also explored the drama of family dynamics. That being said the ending was a real miss for me. Reading the ending had me reflecting back on the rest of the story and concluding that this was a rushed and illogical choice for the characters. Logical Theo became illogical to agree to such a scheme, and the blame for what occurred was too heavy on Theo and not on the other adults who were privy to what was going on. The ending left an unsettled feeling for the book. Although this book is part of a series it was easily read as a stand-alone novel.

Quotes: “‘Life always seems more challenging when we are not refreshed sufficiently.’” – I feel like this is something my parents would say to me when I’d come to them in a mess of emotions as a teenager.

I received an ARC of this book via the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review shared here. For more book reviews go to: https://thebluestockingbooknook.wordp...

This third book in the Regency Wallflowers series is best read after the first two but can also be read as a standalone.

Theodosia Stapleton takes care of her mother and grandfather at Stapleton Court and has never been anywhere but their small village. When her friend Clara dies, Theo and her family take in and watch over Clara's teenage daughter, Rebecca. They write to her uncle, the acclaimed war hero Captain Daniel Balfour, to arrange for Rebecca's future. When Daniel meets Theodosia, they decide to keep his identity a secret in order to avoid undue gossip and fuss over him while they are grieving. Theo does not expect that in the captain she will find a kind, thoughtful man who shares common faith and interests with her. As they spend more time together, Theo and Daniel begin to care for each other. Can they find a joyful future together in spite of unkind people and unforeseen circumstances?

Words cannot adequately express how much this book has touched and encouraged me. Every one of Carolyn Miller's books has affected me in some way, but this one really hit home. I related to Theo easily as she endured the judgments and criticisms of others while feeling lonely and discouraged. Her thoughts as she questioned whether a man would ever love her and her determination to trust God have echoed in my own heart, as well as in many other women's. I was so upset with Frederick, Mrs. Cleever, the other village gossips, and Seraphina, who made life unbearable for Theo. These characters seemed so real to me that I wanted to tell them off myself, in moments of commiseration. Theo and Daniel's relationship was sweet and full of slow-burning angst, but their lively banter was a fun contrast to the heavy moments. I believe this is one of the most humor-filled books the author has ever written, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The unapologetic biblical truths presented were convicting and an encouragement to me. God's truths were ever present while the characters battled their feelings and sought guidance for the future. I don't know how many tabs I used to mark memorable and important quotes throughout the book. If you are looking for a clean romance firmly planted on biblical principles, you have chosen the right author. I highly recommend this and Carolyn Miller's other books and am eagerly awaiting her next project!

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book for the author and publisher. A positive review was not required, and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.

I really enjoy Regency Era books and Carolyn Miller is one of my favorite Regency Authors. Her newest book, Dawn's Untrodden Green is Book 3 in the Regency Wallflower series. I had the honor of reading the first 2 books in this series and have been anxiously awaiting Book 3.

Theodosia Stapleton feels her life in her small town is boring. She figures she will be her mother's caregiver in her Grandfather's home. The locals know the home as the "General Contrary." Theodosia's friend dies leaving behind a daughter. Theodosia takes the girl under her care. The girl's Famous Uncle unexpectedly arrives to take his niece back to London with him. The arrival of the Uncle throws Theodosia off course with her plans. The Uncle, Daniel Balfour, has been fighting in the Penisula War and the King has noticed his bravery and acknowledged him. Theodosia tells Uncle Daniel that his niece, Rebecca, is safe and in good hands. Daniel is reassured that he can return to London on his own and Theodosia will take care of his niece. He is not sure how fast he wants to return to London as he is growing attracted to Theodosia. He tells himself that a relationship nor marriage is feasible as he continues to serve in the Army. Will Daniel listen to his heart and attraction to Theodosia and stay for a while? Will there be a romance between Theodosia and Daniel?

WOW, this book was hard to put down once I started. Ohhh, I didn't put it down until I was finished. Theodosia is a very caring person who puts others before herself. Daniel is a TRUE HERO and is humble about his serving in the Army. I LOVE that they both have the best interest of Rebecca as first and foremost. The Romance was slow going, but I think that was a great thing. I truly enjoyed this book! The book is about God's plans are always GREATER than our own plans for our lives. I also appreciate the Biblical truth within the book. Sweet Regency Romance book! I am very excited and looking forward to more books in this series! GREAT BOOK!
