The mice aren't innocent bystanders either. They got those grains. They adapted, and they are still adapting, to live among us better than ever before. We engineered a niche, and they evolved to fill it.
Mice as a pest have succeeded wildly. Now as a laboratory model, in a way, they are still winning. After all, if the goal of an organism is to pass on its genes, millions of mice do it in labs around the world every day.
