Golden Years #1

The Wedding Bait

Rate this book
You are cordially invited to…a hot mess.

“Ice Queen” Tove Nilsen has it all: a successful career as a political consultant, beauty, a wonderful daughter who’s about to be married…and a gaslighting, selfish disaster of an ex-husband who’s just RSVP’d “yes” to the wedding. On top of that, he’s bringing wife number six with him—a woman who’s a mere five years older than their daughter.

Oh, and she’s a literal supermodel.

Tove’s always handled everything on her own, but now she’s out of her depth until she decides to hire a man to pose as her date for the weekend-long event.

Enter Patrick Mercer, retired escort. His easy confidence soothes Tove’s ragged nerves and enables her to face her ex with her head high. Even better, he infuriates the other man, who can’t make Tove the target for his usual taunts about her single status.

Everything’s going according to plan as the events surrounding the wedding unfold, but there’s a slight complication: for the first time in his career, Patrick is falling for a client. And Tove’s frozen heart is dangerously close to thawing for him.

I enjoyed several of Adele Buck’s Center Stage books and was excited she was writing a romance series focusing on main characters who are over 50.

This fun novella didn’t disappoint. It is insta-love as the book takes place over just a few days. Patrick and Tove have great chemistry, funny banter, and a shared goal of making the father of the bride know he’s not missed.

I like that the only drama comes from Tove’s ex – outside of that all characters involved are a fantastic mix of wonderful people. Fun, sweet, and a little sexy read.

I’m always excited when I find an author writing romances with older characters (and by older, I mean over forty) and Adele Buck’s The Wedding Bait hit the spot for me, garnering a place on my Best of 2022 list.

Tove Nilsen is getting ready to attend her daughter Emily’s wedding at a lakeside resort in Maryland. Emily, a cinematographer, is marrying her girlfriend Hayley, an up-and-coming musician whom she’d met on a video shoot. The problem is that Tove’s ex-husband Anthony has just told their daughter that he’ll be showing up with his latest young wife in tow (with a late acceptance, par for the course with him). The last thing Tove wants is to show up solo for the event and have Anthony sneering at her single-ness so she tells her daughter she’s bringing a date – and now she has to find one in a hurry. Upon explaining her dilemma to her best friend and business partner Parvati, her friend has a suggestion – look for a professional escort. And she even goes one better by finding just the man Tove needs, Patrick Mercer.

As a high-end male escort for twenty years, Patrick knows how to be discreet and cater to the person who has hired him. Retired at forty-five, for the last ten years he’s been enjoying the wealth from his career when he gets a call from his former agent about a weekend event escorting Tove. Though he’s not looking to re-enter the game, he’s intrigued. For one thing, Tove is the daughter of a famous supermodel whose poster used to grace his teenaged bedroom wall. But looking her up online, he also digs up the dirt on her husband and his multiple (and younger and younger wives). The idea of being there as a buffer for Tove against Anthony is very appealing, and he accepts the job.

Tove and Patrick only have a few hours to get to know each other during their car ride together to the wedding before appearing as a happy couple. But Patrick’s skill and genuine niceness make a stressful situation not only manageable, but enjoyable too. His services can include intimacy if that’s what Tove wants. But is she ready to leap into the unknown with a man who seems too good to be true?

This is a novella length contemporary romance and I’ll be honest, I could have read a lot more of Patrick and Tove! It was so nice to see Tove being treated properly by a partner (even if he was hired), a man who knows how to make women feel at ease, to be attentive to them, and to provide whatever support they need. He’s great at dealing with Anthony and his insults, and showing Anthony that he thinks he’s a fool for ditching Tove. Tove is a strong woman, a single parent (since Anthony could never be relied upon to be there for Emily as she was growing up) who is proud of who her daughter has become and excited to welcome her new daughter-in-law into the family. She’s used to sticking up for herself in front of Anthony, but what a nice stress release it is for her to realize she doesn’t have to go it alone with Patrick by her side.

Patrick makes no bones about being attracted to Tove and leaving the ball in her court as to whether she’s interested in making their weekend extra special. But with how Patrick is treating her and Emily, she’s willing to see if his skills at handling women so well extend to the bedroom. And they definitely do. When the weekend is over, Patrick extends an offer to Tove to pursue something more, leading to a happy for now ending.

The Wedding Bait is a sexy and enjoyable novella that has put this author on my radar and I’m hoping she’ll publish another Golden Years novella in the not too distant future.

4 stars. I really enjoyed this lighthearted novella about a later in life couple (in their 50s), although honestly they didn’t feel too different from a couple in their 30s. The whole hire a (retired) escort to be your date to a wedding works at all ages, I guess! Short and sweet, fun with a bit of spice.

4.5 stars rounded down.

My only complaint here is that it isn’t longer!! I was hoping for another 50 or 100 pages when I glanced down and realized I only had 2 or 3 left

The heroine’s ex reminded me so much of Rebecca’s ex in Ted Lasso, I couldn’t help but picture Anthony Head and his British accent

Contains: older MCs (both 50+), divorced single mom heroine, escort hero, hire escort to piss off ex, daughter’s wedding, lesbian daughter, asshole ex, kayaking, declaration of intentions but not of love

2/5🔥 (1 scene, pre-declaration of feelings)

You know how sometimes you pick up a story and it's simply so good you keep sneaking reads whenever you can? Over lunch, tucked in your drawer at work, as soon as you get home...

I was so invested in Tove and Patrick's story that I did just that--even as I didn't want it to be over so soon.

As an older reader, I can definitely relate to Tove's dilemma: when her horrible, dismissive ex announces he is coming to their daughter's wedding after being an absentee father for most of her life, Tove gives in to the desire to show him up with the ultimate of fake dates: Patrick, who is a retired date-for-hire but comes out of retirement to serve as Tove's escort for the weekend.

There were two moments that stood out for me in this story (and I don't want to give any spoilers). The first is when Patrick offers Tove the gift of touch--not in a sexual fashion--and support-starved Tove laps it up like she was offered water in a desert. That moment really hit home for me. The second was when Tove stands up to her ex--a stand-up-and-cheer moment for the reader as well!

Do yourself a favor and grab this delightful story!

Three very solid stars. This is a pleasant, easy read with older protagonists who don't have to get sucked into emotional drama, and an ex who makes a good foil for growing interest, and utterly charming brides. And it's short for a novel, so nothing drags on. I appreciated the adults so much, I'd like to give it more stars, but ultimately it was sweet and good and satisfying without the energy I expected. If you're in the mood for something like that, try this.

4.3⭐️ I loved the progression of this story that started out as a transactional arrangement so that Tove can have a date for her daughter’s wedding knowing that her obnoxious ex-husband would be there with wife number six, a mere 5 years younger than his daughter. Patrick agreed to accompany Tove to the wedding and, their relationship developed into a friendship and a subsequent romance. This is a wonderfully refreshing and satisfying love story between a mature couple. I just wish it could have been just a bit longer.

I couldn’t ask for a better story to start off my 2022 reading. Great, sharp leads, emotional nuance, thoughtfulness about sexuality, and a slimy dude who gets a great comeuppance (but doesn’t take up too much space.)

Some publisher ought to snap this up for a full novel treatment; I would read the heck out of it.

Lesbian Wedding - A Lake Resort Weekend
Emily (25) - Cinematographer - Long Blonde Hair
Hayley - Professional Flautist - Dark Dreadlocks

Anthony (62) and Sophia (30)
Emily’s absentee father and his new wife (#6) of six months, an Italian Supermodel.

Derrick and Andrea - Hayley’s parents. He is a former pro football player with a Super Bowl ring. Nice couple love both girls getting married.

The short story format didn’t allow much depth of the characters. I keep coming back to the word shallow. Pretty much instant love for Tove and Patrick. She is insecure and inexperienced when it comes to having a man in her life. Struggled with the buying Patrick’s time and attention. Patrick was intuitive and caring, a really nice guy. He refunded his fee at the end of the weekend because he wanted to court her and see where a relationship might lead. Don’t recall anyone saying I Love You in the Epilogue.

I do not like the name Tove and I thought the F-words could have been left out and not hurt the story at all. Just before the wedding started, Anthony showed his homophobia and Tove demanded he leave. He resisted, she was firm. Patrick and Hayley’s parents supported her.

No idea if this review will post, this is the third time I’ve tried. Crossing fingers that it won’t show an error message.

Really enjoyed this, and it was a great way to start the new year. I loved the path of the couple, the straightforward and positive handling of a high-end sex-worker (and Tova's occasional 'wait, what are the dynamics here?' pauses). I really liked the wedding as a framing device, the ex was written to be hated in a way that sure didn't feel too far from plausible to a queer reader, and all in all this was a super low-angst, gentle little ride between two fifty-somethings finding each other in a rather unorthodox way. Cheers all around.

I listened to it as an audiobook, and while the author did a solid job of performing the work, the audio quality was a bit off—echoey, distant—in places, and there were a couple of error moments (nothing so wild as to knock me out of the experience or anything like that, just a chuckle over a "ping of e-mail arriving" in the background, and a repeated phrase). If you need your audiobooks to be flawless, I'd maybe suggest grabbing the ebook instead.

This is a novella about an older couple (50's) so kudos for the stretch. Tove is the mother of the bride and former wife of a tech billionaire who divorced her and is now on wife 4 or 5. Much like Leonardo DiCaprio he gets older but his wives are always in their 20's. Tove's daughter has invited dad to the wedding and he is actually going to come and bring the latest supermodel wife with him. Tove runs a successful PR business and hasn't had time to date but doesn't want to look lame at the wedding and a friend convinces her to hire a professional. Patrick is lured out of escort retirement by a mutual friend to be Tove's date. It goes exactly as you expect but that short page count doesn't do the predictable storyline any favors. I'd advise skipping and go for a longer story with the same trope.

This was a charming, fluffy, bucket of warmth. The author made excellent use of the maturity of the main characters: they know what they care about and don't so when love comes, they can recognize it; they are both already successful so they start on an even playing field and no character depends on the other; they think they can't be surprised anymore so when it happens it's a total delight to them. Kudos to the author also for treating sex work as a legitimate career choice involving skill and craft. This is a quick cuddle of a book.

This was fun, and I want to try more by this author. I was enjoying this story while I was reading it and then suddenly there was no more to read. The ending was very abrupt. The story was a bit too short and under-developed to buy that the MCs were ready to commit after 48 hours. I believed in Patrick's attraction to and admiration of Tove, but he wasn't hit over the head with insta-love. Tove had only taken a few baby steps toward being more confident in her desirability and I didn't feel like I got to see her complete journey. Still I was rooting for these MCs and if this short novella got expanded into a novel, I'd want to read it.

One more like and dislike:

This is based on one of my favourite romcoms of all time The Wedding Date (which is technically adapted from another book, but other than the central premise totally different). Anyway, this does a nice job of adapting without being a beat for beat retelling.
The characters are well drawn for such a short book. I love that the heroine is over fifty, though making her have to be a smoking hot daughter of a supermodel is a bit over the top. The relationship develops nicely, although a little quickly at the end to imply the HEA.
Anyway, a fun quick read.

A contemporary novella about Tove and Patrick who are both in their fifties. Tove's daughter is getting married and her obnoxious ex-husband is attending their daughter's wedding and Tove needs a plus one.
Tove hires an escort and is pleasantly surprised when she meets Patrick. He's exactly what she needs in a plus one and they hit it off well. Patrick is fiercely attracted to Tove and for the first time in his life, he thinks he has found love.
A charming story with some heat. It was nice to read about older characters.

Sometimes you’re just in the mood for a quick Romance with a little guaranteed insta-love and The Wedding Bait surely fits the bill. I loved seeing a sexy, successful 50-something heroine getting the HEA with a hot cinnamon roll hero guaranteed to make her toes curl. Add in a romantic wedding and a little well plotted revenge on a slimy ex and this novella was a fun escape.

tr: mcs in 50s, fake relationship, close proximity
tw: homophobia

This is a quick, very sweet read. I'm pretty much gone for Patrick within the first 5 minutes of meeting him. I'm that easy - an older gentleman who is respectful of women and reads romance books in bed? 11/10 WILL CLIMB HIM LIKE A TREE.

This was a lovely romance featuring older adults (we need more of these!) with a great setting and a smooth, well paced plot. It is a novella so there is a little bit of an insta-love feel because of the length. But I enjoyed the characters (even the side characters were well rounded) and thought it was sweet and sexy.

Nice Over-50 Romance

I very much enjoyed Tove and Patrick’s story. Reading an instalove between a 52 year old and a 55 year old was an appreciated change of pace. Sexy and smart and a good read.

Wonderful Romance

I loved this novella! Being a woman of a certain age, this was so much fun to read. Almost all novels have a heroine in her 20's or 30's so it was very refreshing to read a romance where the characters are my age. Please write more😍

What fun!
This is a wonderful story. I love the scenes with the ex- they are so well written. Classy, yet on target. Patrick and Tove fit so well together, and this was a nice change with the characters not being in their 20’s or 30’s. Here’s to mature folks getting good stories!

I'm getting old that I enjoy reading books with low to zero-conflict between the main characters. This was a quick read, quite light-hearted and enjoyable. Patrick is the ultimate book boyfriend, lucky Tove. Love the supporting characters.

Great short story for mature romance enthusiasts

I really enjoyed this story. It was realistic and I got drawn into their situation (which I think is hard to do in a short story).
