Orphaned at an early age, Herman and Amanda Masterson spent most of their lives tossed around from one foster parent to the next, each one worse than the last. They eventually get a new lease on life when a distant uncle adopts them. However, this is no fairy tale, and it doesn’t end with " they lived happily ever after…"
Their first day at school turns to disaster when Amanda stands up to teen bullies The Eighties, led by the sadistic and over-sexed Debbie Dutra. Payback from the wicked gang turns into a hellish night of torture and humiliation for the two.
With his sister a shell of her former self, Herman turns to a lifelong obsession with werewolves and a hasty deal with the Devil’s right-hand woman to help him dole out some brutal, savage, and lycanthropic vengeance on The Eighties.
Devil Won’t Let Me Be is a mix of brutal savagery, sexual depravity, dark comedy, and supernatural occurrences of the hairy kind. It’s a classic good versus evil versus Satan coming-of-age tale firmly rooted in extreme and splatterpunk horror.
If I’m not mistaken, this was Chad Farmer’s debut novel. And I’m not sure that I’ve ever given a first time author a perfect 5/5. But this deserved the honor. It is an absolutely insane, wild ride. Each character is more over the top than the next, and the author manages to involve vampires, werewolves, zombies, succubi, and even the biggest, baddest baddie on the block…Satan. There is a ton of sexual content, including rape, so reader beware, and violence galore. Herman was an unexpected lead character, and I was surprised by the direction Farmer took with his adoring, protective sister, but he turned out to be ideal nonetheless. The antagonists of the story are obsessed with the 80s and call themselves…you guessed it…The Eighties. Debbis Dutra is just a disgusting, deplorable person and you spend most of the book anticipating her eventual demise. The story is ridiculous, and starts out much more serious than it ends up evolving into, but is just a load of fun. The biggest star here was Chad Farmer’s hilarious writing, which kept me totally engaged, entertained, and glued to this story throughout. Some of the lines are very memorable, including ‘A janitor wizard, huh? Sounds gay to me.’ For fans of horror, comedy, and even the loveable subgenre of splatterpunk, read this book and keep an eye on this author.
What a wild extreme ride this book is! Absolutely brutal and full of basically every trigger warning known.
Its graphic and I have learnt so many new ways to describe sexual positions and body parts. We follow a brother and sister Herman and Amanda who grew up in foster care enduring the most brutal of upbringings wherever they went. They locate a long lost uncle who takes them in and they start at a new school hoping for a fresh start. This town and the school is run by the Dutra family and has for generations having members infiltrate ever position of power in the town.
Debbie the daughter of the town sheriff runs a gang who sexually assaults, murders and dishes out violence in horrific fashion within the school. On their first day of Herman and Amanda run into the gang and endure the most sadistic of sexual assaults and are left for dead.
What happens after this is a story of pacts with the devil, werewolfs, wizards, murders, insanity and the creation of a reanimated monster of various body parts. This novella has a strong theme of sexual violence described in vivid details with nothing left to the imagination. The characters are hate filled and deplorable sub humans. The scenes described are absolutely disgusting and putrid.
It's been described as a cross between the movies Class of 1984 and Teen Wolf. It Is but on a totally new level of depravity.
This is an extreme splatterpunk book. It's what the genre is all about and if a fan a must read. Dont read this if your a normal horror fan 🤣 its next level. Loved the depravity had me shocked and laughing the whole time.
This book started off really well for me and grabbed me pretty hard by the throat quite quickly...but towards the middle the grip loosened and by the end the grip had totally let go!! It went from good to bad...with some farfetched utter crap going on. There were some mind blowing annoying characters that had the charisma of an earthworm!!
"Debbie Dutra"...She just needed one fucking hell of a good slap right across her dumb face!
Don't misunderstand me or this book because there were some pretty brutal, gory and depraved supernatural things going on between the pages...but the storyline just didn't do it for me at all.
What can I say besides this book is vile, ridiculous, funny, disgusting and a lot of fun to read. I lost count of how many times I said wtf as I was reading. Books that can do that are awesome.
Splatterpunk fans will definitely enjoy this story.
There are too many triggers to list for this book!!! It was an interesting concept and quite different. If you don't trigger easy, and you enjoy splatterpunk horror, then I would recommend that you read this book, if nothing else for the shock factor. The only reason why I didn't give this the full five stars was because even though the main characters Herman and his sister Amanda were horribly brutalized, at the end of the story I just couldn't connect with Herman's character enough to be invested in him. There was something about the story that left me not really caring about him. It could be simply a matter of me and my mindset today! So, this gets a solid 4 stars for being one of the most original stories that I have read this year, it was gory and brutal, but not really scary.
A wonderfully vile and depraved splatter punk tale of high school trauma and revenge
Chad Farmer has knocked it out of the park with this. Werewolves, demonic pacts, a wizard and a psychotic prom queen collide in an explosion of filth, violence and gore. Pretty much every trigger warning you can think of will be found in this book, alongside some of the most entertaining euphemisms for genitalia I've ever encountered.
Absolutely not for the faint hearted, but if you're someone that enjoys splatterpunk and extreme horror then this will be one for you
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book is absolutely bonkers in every single way. It’s sleazy, it’s in your face, it’s laugh out loud funny, and it has some of the best one liners and zingers I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. You could turn to just about any page in the book at random and find something that will either leave you speechless from laughter, or from the level of depravity happening. Chad Farmer created something special. This is what I’d call affectionately, a trashsterpiece.
Herman and Amanda Masterson are siblings who have gone through all the horrible things life can throw at two orphans. Just as their pitiful existence seemed not worth continuing, a along lost uncle makes contact and adopts the duo. Almost immediately after on their first day of school, the two are attacked by the town’s notorious bullies, named The Eighties, after Amanda stands up for herself and her younger brother. Amanda is left a shell of a human after the vicious sexual attack, leaving Herman to conquer his fears and find a way to exact revenge for the both of them.
Devil Won’t Let Me Be took all of the best parts of trash cinema and SOV classics and found a way to turn it into a werewolf revenge story that had me interested from the very first page. Immediately after finishing this, I went looking for more of Farmer’s titles and I’m happy to report, we will all have the pleasure of more new releases this year.
I can’t get enough of this man’s work, it’s brilliant. It’s fun. It’s gross. It’s one of my favorite books I’ve read in the past year and I’m counting the days until Farmer’s next release.
These were the notes I made on my Kindle while reading. A sentence or a phrase would get to me and I wrote down my thoughts
•Crude and unapologetic •Just nasty! •How many awful nicknames does he have for vagina? •This is just over-the-top vile •This is a good book if you are looking for horrendous names for sexual discharge.
Some of you will look at this list and quickly run out to buy it. Just don’t expect me to rub your back or hold back your hair when you hurl.
The publisher offered an ARC of Chad Farmer’s ‘Devil Won’t Let Me Be,’ I eagerly asked for one – and got it! This is a novella, but it reads like a novel. It’s action-packed, but also heavy on emotion and dark (very dark) humor. I enjoyed every second of it. I read it in one sitting, the flowing prose and the clear imagery kept my interest the whole time, and sometimes even made me feel genuine hatred for the villains of the piece. 100% recommend going into this blind; there’s some character development, but the real hero of the book is the story itself: Chad Farmer knows how to spin a tale, especially one that’ll make you retch! There’s abuse, of all kinds, incest, lots of rage, revenge, killings, bullying, corruption, an angry werewolf, a tired wizard, a nasty (soooo nasty!) prom queen and her followers – plus a superhot minion of Hell. Oh, and the Devil makes an appearance, too. Come to think of it, this might be the extreme horror book Terry Pratchett never wrote!
Devil Won’t Let Me Be is the debut novella by Chad Farmer. It is funny, gross, gory and offensively descriptive, as any great splatterpunk read should be. If I had to describe this book, I would say it is equivalent to an 80’s revenge movie.
This book gets 5 stars for storyline. I loved reading this book. It took me right back to my 80’s teenage years. I could be laughing on moment and grossed out the next.
There are 2 reasons that this book receives 4 stars rather than 5. First, there are quite a few missed edits. Second, as I mentioned above, the book is offensively descriptive which is a good quality in a book. I loved it except for the fact that it was overdone. By the time the reader gets toward the end of the book, it is too much.
Overall, I enjoyed this read and will be looking forward to Mr. Farmer’s future releases.
DEVIL WON’T LET ME BE by Chad Farmer This book… just…
Herman and Amanda Masterson have had the short end of the stick. Abandoned by their addict parents, they moved from foster home to foster home and the abuses followed them too. When their high school janitor uncle adopts them, life gets better, right? Right? Nooooope. So, so much worse. Just … gotdamn, so much worse. With bullying that forces one sibling into silence while the other makes a bargain they do not completely understand, the blood will flow as will hidden truths decades unknown.
Gotdamn. That was my thought and I said out loud at least fifteen times. DWLMB is brutal. And it’s relentless. I can handle a lot of sexual assault in my books, but I had to walk away from it a few times. But what Farmer does is write in such a way that you HAVE to know what happens next, even if it the most depraved, repulsive, uncomfortable scene yet. (And friends, there are plenty of them).
I don’t know what I expected with it. I didn’t expect such a well written story with characters that pull on every heart string you have. It’s an absolute must read if you can stomach it. I would rank this as one of the top three hardest novels for me to get through. I’m interested to see how he will top DWLMB and I’m a bit scared. A HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/5.
I was chosen to be an ARC reader for ‘Devil Won’t Let Me Be’ by Chad Farmer in return for an honest review.
This novella is extremely depraved (in the best way), has a lot of fucked up characters and a very interesting plot. No character is safe, nothing is off limits and anything can happen.
This is an extreme horror story, No Doubt. There are a lot of adult content, drug content, and gorey triggers! So, dont be surprised if you read this review, then read the book.
I really liked this story. I would have given it 5stars, but I couldn’t get a good feel for the characters. Not that they were written wrong, I just couldn’t connect any of them.
The story was a roller coaster. I thought it was well written. The bad in the story was fun to keep up with and kept me turning the pages to see what happened next.
Some of the nicknames used made me, LOL!!
I would recommend this to any extreme horror or splatter punk fans. If you are ok with reading stories that contains vile and degrading scenes, Welcome! This read is for you.
Chad Farmer outdoes his debut INTO THIS WORLD with this shocker of a follow-up. DEVIL WON'T LET ME BE tells a fantastic story of Herman and Amanda Masterson, two orphans that have been products of several broken foster homes with all the physical and mental abuse crashing upon their psyches. As they are rescued from these trials by their Uncle Will, they face yet another obstacle to their sanity at Dutra High School in the form of profligate Debbie Dutra and her gang coined "The Eighties". When a run-in with the gang leaves them broken and bloody, Herman thirsts for revenge and will do whatever it takes, even if it takes him down the road to Hell!
Mr. Farmer provides a fictitious but unblinking view of adolescent dystopia rife with explicit sex and extreme violence. His writing style is superb but gritty beyond all imagination. His prose comes at you like a Saturday night bare-knuckle bar brawl mixed with a steel cage death match that continues on until its finale. With all of this wonderful chaos, this story is extremely engaging as I struggled to put down my Kindle, wondering what was going to happen next. If you enjoy your novellas raw to the bone, I dare you to read this extreme but wonderful page-turner.
Devil Won't Let Me Be by Chad Farmer won me over in much a similar way to the title of this novel - it wouldn't leave my head until I finished the very last page. It sucked me and it didn't let go until I feverishly turned the last page. Albeit Farmer tries his very best to make sure I was so disgusted I couldn't finish it, but I head in there and kept going and I'm so glad I did. If only so I could truly enjoy some of the well deserved deaths in this book. It's truly not for the faint of heart but I genuinely think those who get into the splatterpunk genre will really enjoy this. It's gross, disturbing, unsettling, and gave me the ick over and over again.
Definitely check out the trigger warnings before diving into this one. It's very important that you read those because NOTHING is off limits in this story. Check it out!
I'm usually the sort of person who can et, or at minimum happily drink their coffe whilst reading splatterpunk. Congratulations to Chad for having descriptions so vile, I stopped even drinking while reading. At around 30% in, I took a break to play with my cats. You know, to remember there are happy and nice things in the world. And still I was fully invested in the plot and had to finish this book. Despite the chronic feeling that I needed a shower and to sanitize my kindle, the story itself was good, and not one that felt like I've read this before. I will say that this book is extremely graphic and if you have a trigger, it is probably in here. I look forward to seeing what else the author writes in the future.
Wow. I am obsessed, I loved every thing about this book! It’s extreme, xxx, but it all came together perfectly!!
Amanda and Herman have had an awful life in and out of foster care. Finally, they end up with their uncle. New school, new opportunities. Uncle warned them to stay away from Debbie Dutra from the get go. Unfortunately, that’s not how things worked out. Herman made a promise he’d get even. Johnny vowed to get revenge. A small town ran by a family of bullies was going to meet its match.
Deals were made, asses were kicked.

Amanda and Hermand come from a terrible past, and with this next chapter in their lives looking somewhat promising, it's anything but. Bullying taken to the extreme, with a satisfying revenge arc, this piece of literature delivers what it promises in force, like a mack truck from Hell going full-speed. Filled with over-the-top comments that ranged from the exaggerated/hyperbolic, with a dash of comedy sprinkled in throughout the madness.
To say I now need a Catholic Priest to bless the bleach I'm about to wash my eyes out with would be an understatement. This author delivers.
Thank You Chad Farmer, Harry Roger WilliamsIII, Nathan D Ludwig and BookSirens
Love Cheesy Horror like Sleepaway Camp series and Heathers type movies, then this Twisted Menacing Gruesome Debut Novella is assured to be up your alley. It's comical with a great deal of Gore, Violence, and Adult Content. It's a Coming of Age Story written for Adults.
I received the Audible Code for this Novella. The narrator reads with intonation for each character.
Splatterpunk Comedy Trigger Points

Unbelievably gross and disgusting, but also unexpectedly fun and, yes, kind-hearted!
This is absolutely the most unhinged and vile book I've ever read, but also extremely funny with likeable protagonists and super hateable villains. Some scenes will live in my head rent free forever.
Be warned - the sex and violence contained within this book is beyond XXX and screamingly offensive. But I think that's part of the fun. The journey is just as engrossing as the destination with this one!
Triggers Galore! But that didn’t stop me from reading this disturbingly graphic book! I will read it again. If you are easily triggered, then move along. Otherwise, this splatterpunk horror is probably right up your alley.
I received a copy, and I am leaving my honest review.
This book was absolutely DISGUSTING ... I LOVED every second of it! The amount of hilarious moments, stomach twisting gore, jaw-dropping moments, and supernatural elements made this novella such a wild book to read!
It seems like anything is possible in Dutra County as long as the devil has its hold on the place. The Dutras get away with a lot in this gory and explicit book, but eventually everyone gets what's coming to them when the devil's creations take the upperhand.
I voluntarily read a free ARC of this book and personally chose to leave a review.
I've read my fair share of extreme and explicit gory horrorbooks and I won't get tired of it any time soon. This was so easy to read (probably less so for people who have a weak stomach) and I had a blast throughout the whole book. Although some of it was pretty gnarly.
I received this as an ARC from the publisher and am providing my honest feedback.
Devil Won't Let Me Be caught my eye from the start. I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but damn this cover drew me in. Unfortunately, the hype I felt over the cover couldn't withstand the actual content of the book overall.
I love a good horror book, give me all the extreme, horrifying, awful things that you can, and this book definitely delivered on the gore factor. Any sort of sexual and physical depravity you can imagine was present in this book, so I'll definitely give it props for that; however, I felt zero connection with any of these characters.
I need to feel connected to the characters if I'm going to be horrified about what happens to them. Sure, you can put a bunch of gore and nasty descriptions in a story, but until you connect me to the characters, the horror is just an abstract. I'll read it and think, 'yep....that's horrible.....how disgusting', but it won't ever hit me with the emotions of it because I just don't care about the characters. This book could have been an absolute knockout if more time was taken to develop the characters and give me as a reader a cause to fight for and believe in; give me a reason to want to see the good guy win and the villain(s) fail. Without that, the story is just a bunch of gross descriptions strung together across 172 pages, give or take.
There was also some language that I really didn't care for in the dialogue that helped to kill my interest in the book. I'm not a fan at all of r***rd being used by actual people or in a book, so that put me off a lot, especially with the amount that it was used. Some of the terms used to describe certain body parts were extremely cringey for me as well.
It was a bit of a slog to get through this, surprisingly. I was so hopeful for a campy, revenge slasher, and while I definitely got the slashy gore, I didn't really get much else to round this out for me.
This book is the very definition of splatterpunk. The story starts out strong and ends with a bang. What would you trade the Devil for your soul? Revenge? Sex? Power? Control? This book contains all of these and more. This story starts out strong and ends with a bang. It flows seamlessly from the first page until the nail biting conclusion. I couldn't put it down! It's not for the faint of heart! I received this book as an Advance Readers Copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Splatterpunk readers will eat this one up! Wow! This story was so descriptive and completely unhinged! I found this to read with a hint of bizarro in there as well with all the nonsense thrown in there for shits and giggles. I loved all the 80’s references throughout making it feel like a true 80’s revenge story. The writing is super original and fun. The names given to some of these characters and the one liners and phrases had me cackling. The character building was great and I loved the headliners for the chapters, it made it fun and “spooky.” Also, “The Freaks Come Out At Night” part of the book I believe was an 80’s rap group, Whodini reference? I thought that was awesome!
Devil Won’t Let Me Be follows brother and sister, Herman and Amanda from their traumatic upbringing in and out of very abusive foster homes until they are rescued by their long lost Uncle. Herman is constantly bullied and picked on for his appearance and speech impediment and Amanda just carries these awful traumas she has faced with her every day. They totally altered her life. Herman is the weaker sibling and Amanda is the stronger sibling.
Herman and Amanda start high school in their new town where their uncle Will lives. They are immediately faced with the threesome clique known as “the eighties.” Debbie is the leader and she always gets what she wants. The eighties track down Herman and Amanda again but this time they beat Amanda so badly that they permanently cripple her. Herman takes a beating as well but he can still walk. Herman wants to get revenge on these bullies for his sister but doesn’t know how to pull this off.
Lo and behold, Ms. Sasha, a teacher at the high school turns out to be a succubus. She turns Herman into a werewolf so he can get his vengeance. This comes at a price though. Ms. Sasha also grants Debbie full control of men. Herman and Debbie have the ultimate battle now, who will win???
Thank you to Book Sirens and Chad Farmer for this ARC.
I want to preface this review by saying I am not usually into Werewolf/Wizard/etc. type characters. HOWEVER this book was GOOD! It sucks you in from the beginning. Amanda and Herman, our protagonist duo, have not had an easy life. When they move in with their uncle and start a new school, things are about to change from bad to worse. The Eighties gang are set to make their lives a living hell (no pun intended). But Debbie and her cronies don't know what's coming for them. All it takes is a small deal with the devil and his mistress Sasha, and all your dreams can come true…..or can they? This literary masterpiece is filled with blood, gore, eroticism, and pure evil. It is not usually my jam, but I am so glad I read it! Chad Farmer is going places….what kind of places, only time will tell. I recommend this book to anyone who thinks they can handle a grotesque, stomach churning adventure with a great story line! I read this book as an arc review, and would be honored to review more by this author!
Definitely check your trigger warnings. This book is a wild ride. Each character was weirder than the next, and the author even manage to put in werewolf, vampire, wizard, zombie, succubus, and even Satan himself. There is a lot of gore and sexual violence, as well as rape and a lot of bodily fluids and other stuff involved and definitely graphic. This book takes place at a high school where Herman and Amanda are starting their first day after being adopted by their Uncle Will. From day, one of the bullies start messing with them and after they’re running with the bullies, Herman decides to make a deal with the
I’m really into splatterpunk and read quite a lot of books in this genre. This one had perfect gore and creative unalivings. Absolutely shocking as gross at times which is exactly what the genre is about, I really enjoyed this book!
However I felt like there was a lot of unnecessary divulging wording /sentences especially in the prologue
