A young man from Compton rises to the highest levels of baseball greatness.Roy White played on the New York Yankees from 1965 through the 1979 season. Roy grew up on the tough streets of Compton and created a successful all-star baseball career playing alongside such greats as Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford, Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, and many others. Today Roy White sits among the greatest all-time Yankees in most offensive categories. After his career with the Yankees, Roy White became a star in Japan playing for the Tokyo Giants and playing alongside the greatest Japanese player of all time Sadaharu Oh.Considered one of the classiest baseball players ever, this is Roy White's story, but it's also the story of a unique period in baseball history when the Yankees fell from grace and regained glory and the country dealt with societal changes in many ways.
This was like a walk down memory lane, guided by a Yankee icon of my youth. Illuminating and entertaining, especially on the integrity and character that brought Roy White from the inner city to the top of the baseball world.
You would be hard-pressed to find someone who does not like Roy White, and this inspiring book chronicles his amazing career and amazing life. It was a joy to read stories about storied Yankees from Horace Clarke to Mickey Mantle and Reggie Jackson. Who would think that a boy raised on the streets of Compton would turn out to be a Yankee great? The stories in this book are not just revealing but Mr. White talks in depth about Yankee situations that all Yankee fans do remember, from the Billy Martin fight with Reggie Jackson in Boston (in which Mr. White shares my opinion) to whether you could truly believe what George Steinbrenner or Billy Martin ever told you.
This book is an entertaining page-turner that is a fast read to life not only as a Yankee but major league baseball as a whole. Mr. White is a regal man who was thrust into the Bronx Zoo and not only survived but excelled!
Roy White is truly how majestic Yankee who deserves a Monument at Yankee Stadium!
Kudos to Roy White & Paul Semendinger on a wonderful book about a Yankee legend and someone who was universally beloved and respected by all who knew and played alongside him. And I also came to admire the man more & more after reading his story. But more than just a nice guy, he was a great player - starred on the Yankees from the end of the Mantle years through 1970s and played on 2 championship teams as well as ended his career on top of his game in Japan. The book features fascinating stories and anecdotes of his journey and makes a strong case that Mr. White deserves more recognition from the Yankee franchise & I for one would buy a ticket to see Roy White enshrined in Monument park. More than a great book, "From Compton to the Bronx" its a fitting tribute to the legacy of a great man
Great baseball book - any serious fan needs to read this - maybe the most underrated yankee player ever and obvious nice guy who actually cares about people and has more than contributed by giving back with his foundation
