Atlanta Lightning #2

The End Zone: Alternate Cover

Rate this book
Jeremy
Seeing my best friend, West, happy with his fiancé opened my eyes to things I’ve been missing in my own marriage. My divorce, which was amicable, followed. Strangely, at West’s wedding, I find myself confiding in Darren, the straight, confirmed bachelor and star quarterback of the Atlanta Lightning. Darren is a full-steam-ahead kind of guy, and one talk leads to hanging out, swapping phone numbers, and pranking West and Anson while they’re on their honeymoon. When I head back to California, I expect our chats to end, but I couldn’t be more wrong.

Darren
I still can’t say how it happened, how a random decision to strike up a conversation with Jeremy turned into…whatever this is. All I know is, months later, my days aren’t complete until we tell each other good night. Whether it’s on our calls or when he flies to Atlanta, we talk about everything, lying awake together half the night. Jeremy’s got me feeling… different . If it was just my newly discovered bisexuality, that’d be one thing. I’m not one to stress about being into a man for the first time. It’s the other stuff, the way he makes my pulse race and my heart swell, that’s throwing me for a loop.

I didn’t think I was made for relationships, but I want it all with him. Except, it feels like as soon as we make it past one obstacle, there’s an even bigger one waiting for us. We just have to keep our heads in the game and our eyes on the prize, to make it to the end zone, before one last tackle takes us down for good.

I quite enjoyed this overall.

I really liked both Jeremy and Darren, even though the way they acted was immature at times and their banter was a bit too sexual in the beginning, while their "friendlier" interactions mostly happened off page. But both are really great characters. They're sweet and caring and very open with each other. No miscommunication here. And I love how Darren deals with things.

The story is maybe a bit sappy at times and everything flows too easily, but it's fun and uplifting. Anston and West play a big part in this story, as well, and I loved that we got to see so much of them here.

It's me, not the book. Please don't unfriend me.

description

The first half was somehow enjoyable but the nicknames, ugh! cringey. The second half got boring, I don't think I can be able to make it to the end, I am not feeling the connection and this reads like NA.

I have noticed that in most Riley books we don't get the MCs detailed description, (Or maybe I am not keen enough.) I tried to picture them in my head but it was blank, so I just went with that cover model.

I liked Darren's personality and his attitude towards everything, other than that the rest was freaking boring.😣😤

Anson and West remain my favorite Atlanta Lighting couple, but Darren and Jeremy are a close second.

Darren is larger than life. When he walks into a room, people notice. Darren has always loved sex. He's just never wanted more. He has a close bond with his mom, stepdad, sister, and Anson, but he's not one for romantic entanglements.

Then he meets Jeremy, West's newly divorced, curly haired best friend who happens to love football. Jeremy is a lawyer but doesn't have much passion for his job. His crush on one very sexy, very straight football player is the greatest passion he's felt for a while.

The rest is all all about finding the End Zone.

Highlights:

friends to lovers;

bisexual/demiromantic awakening (Darren needs those labels, and Jeremy is the only person he's fallen for romantically);

jumping in with both feet (when Darren is in, he is IN; he doesn't do anything halfway);

some drama over the Lighting having two queer players, but nothing too crazy and almost no relationship angst (Darren's anger and frustration as to why the hell it matters whom he loves is very real though);

serious feels and plenty of steamy action (Darren is all about the ass play);

awesome secondary characters (I especially loved seeing West and Anson still living their HEA);

banter, teasing, even some hurt/comfort as Darren suffers a significant injury;

a relationship goals kind of HEA.

P.S. Make sure you read The End Game prior to reading The End Zone. This book is all the things, but it's not a standalone

Audio 5 +++ Stars

It's no secret that I'm an Iggy Toma fan. 😍 So, of course, 5 Stars! I'm also now fan of Benjamin Charles. Good audio gods....that man has got a voice on him! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 And his performance was all that! The voice definitely matched that sexy AF book cover! I appreciate very much that a voice actor of color was cast as the MC of color! It only makes sense, and it's what I hope becomes the norm!

Story - 5 Stars

Riley Hart's friends to lovers, slow burn romances are so winning me over. The romance was mostly low angst, and the MCs COMMUNICATED! No nonsense drama.

Please don't let this be the last book in the series! 🙏🏽

Erm. Can I just tell you that I don’t like this cover? Is it just me?

This book honestly annoyed me in the beginning. It was filled with both Darren and Jeremy having such typical guy conversations talking about nothing but sex and cars and football. I don’t know why it just irked me, and honestly Darren was so stereotypical It almost brought me to tears

⚫️“ The shitty sex you must be having. Nothing compares to sex with me, not even a car like this.”
“No, no, no, no. Nope. You are not claiming to have better sex than me. I have the best sex.”

⚫️“Troublemaker: It was aight. What are you doing tonight?
Me: Thinking about going out to get laid. You?
Troublemaker: I’m planning to do the same.”

But he really won me over throughout the book. Both Jeremy and Darren were beautiful characters. They were well written and honestly just fun. They had good banter and their journey regarding Darren’s sexuality was nicely incorporated into the story. It did feel like a “gay for you” type book. Darren identified himself as gay and Demi and it was nice to read about how he figured it out and how his family and friends were so supportive.

“Will I have bad days? Yes. But so will you. We’ll get on each other’s nerves, and we’ll argue, and sometimes we’ll take shit out on each other. That’s life. It’s like that with any relationship. But when I’m in, I’m in. I don’t run from shit. I don’t back down. I’m not going to let other people’s bigotry ruin my happiness and what I’ve fought for. So…I’m gonna go take care of this shit, and then I’m gonna come home to you. And maybe I’ll get a BJ as a reward for my hard day.”.

The story wasn’t too extraordinary. Nothing different from all other MM sport romances but it was still enjoyable to read. It was very light, without going too much into heavier topics that might’ve spoilt the overall mood of the book which I appreciated.

Sometimes I feel like the author adds in a heavier sub-plot line to give the story more depth? Or meaning. I’m not sure. But it always felt unnecessary because the entire context and how the book is read just changes.

But this one stuck to being an easier read. Darren and Jeremy has a sweet and we’ll developed relationship based on trust and friendship and I loved their journey.

Historically, I have very mixed opinions about Riley Hart's books, but I adored The Endgame so much that I couldn't wait to start The End Zone.

If I'm being completely honest, I enjoyed The End Zone, but not as much as I had expected.

The good is that this book is very sweet and pretty drama-free. It's a nice romance that builds over time, and has a lot of earnest moments. Darren wasn't afraid to face his feelings, and I loved how supportive his whole family was with him. In fact, I really enjoyed the whole reading experience, and I read the book in only two days. However, there were a number of things that irked me about the story.

The nicknames, like from book 1, felt overdone at this point in book 2. It felt like the author was trying to repeat some of the sweetness and magic from book 1, but it didn't have the same effect on me here. If book 3 has nicknames as well... I'm not going to be a happy camper.

Also, I found it *very* hard to believe that a guy who thought himself to be totally straight would be so sexual off the bat with Jeremy. I didn't buy how the relationship started between them, and I thought the sexual realization aspects felt forced.

The story edged to sappy, and the ending was so draggy that I rounded down instead of up, even though I liked the beginning of the story.

Overall, I think this book didn't have the magic of the first book in the series, but it was still a nice read from Riley Hart.

two words: DARREN👏🏼EDWARDS👏🏼

why, you ask? let me show you instead. 🤪
"No. Will I have bad days? Yes. But so will you. We'll get on each other's nerves, and we'll argue, and sometimes we'll take shit out on each other. That's life. It's like that with any relationship. i love characters who, even if they're feeling confused with their sexuality or simply just who they are, they don't run from it. if they know they want something, they go for it. they don't let their fears stop them from chasing after who/what they want and it's perfectly okay to feel afraid or hide—there's no wrong or right answer—but characters like Darren who are straightforward and don't beat around the bush, despite the confusion, is someone i tend to have a very spot for. 🥺💘

i loved his natural chemistry/connection with Jeremy and how they immediately hit it off, leading to them becoming friends, then something more. i think the way Darren was confused at first after realizing he may not be straight was completely understandable, but i liked how it didn't drag out once it came to saying how he felt towards Jeremy. the way they spoke what was on their mind and were honest with each other was refreshing bc there was no unnecessary misunderstanding or miscommunication whatsoever. 😌

Darren's family was honestly everything. i loved them so much, and how supportive they were of Darren and Jeremy. i especially loved his mom and sister. 🥺

overall, i'm so glad i finally got around to this and Darren and Jeremy have my heart. <3

Re-Read January 2022 - still enjoyed this one but maybe more like straight up 4 stars vs. 4.5! Hoping for more books in this series though!

4.5 Stars!

Book 2 did not disappoint! Hallelujah!

Really loved both Darren and Jeremy. Loved the development of their relationship from friends to lovers.

Loved that their was no unnecessary drama. They acted like adults. They had conversations with each other like adults. It was refreshing for sure.

I of course loved getting to hear from Anson and West.

Solid addition to the series, sure hope we get more. Kordell?! Yes, please!

***I received an eArc from the author in exchange for an honest review.***

Darren... what a wonderful surprise. I was not expecting his heart to be such a beautiful aspect of his character. This was a beautiful follow-up to The Endgame and in many ways, I think it was an even better story than its predecessor because of how much I love both Darren and Jeremy and their friendship/romance.

The End Zone is a great story featuring friends to lovers combined with a bisexual awakening that felt original and unique in its development with Darren and Jeremy's romance. I loved how their romance was so completely innocent and earnest because of their genuine connection from their strong and intimate friendship. Their romance was a natural progression that felt earned and expected.

Overall I loved this romance. It was much more emotional than I was expecting. I completely fell for this heartfelt romance between an Angel and a Troublemaker.

Is this Riley Hart’s best series yet? I think it might just be.

Diving back into the world of the Atlanta Lightning’s dynamic duo, Anson and Darren—besties and best players on the championship NFL team—this sequel (to The Endgame) follows Darren through his bi-awakening, when he connects on a crazy-deep level with Jeremy, West’s bestie from book one.

This story was a bit lighter on the angst-o-meter than its predecessor, with happy-go-lucky, zero-filter, straight-before-now Darren eagerly going from 0 to 60 when he begins to feel things for new-bestie Jeremy, that are wholly new to him both physically and romantically—but like that would stop him!

What I loved most was how ALL-IN Darren went, embracing his changing sexuality with thoughtfulness and passion, but in a genuine way that was completely believable. When all was said and done, Darren was a good man with an unfathomably large heart, who wanted what was best for his family, friends and team. He loved fiercely and loyally, opening his heart and mind to these new changes in his life, giving zero-fucks what others thought or said as long as he got to be with Jeremy and make him happy.

Jeremy was a real treat, too. He was calmer and more centred, with a bottomless-pit of patience where Darren and his larger-than-life personality was concerned. He gave as good as he got, which provided for a very fun dynamic between the two, bringing a true sense of camaraderie and joy into every interaction they shared, in and out of the bedroom.

The conflict, like in book one, mostly revolved around how to tackle being openly queer as a professional champion footballer, with little in the way of relationship angst, which I GREATLY appreciated. From the very beginning, even as friends, Darren and Jeremy just clicked, bantering and flirting up a storm, even before Darren realised the extent of their connection or the truth of his bisexuality and demiromantic nature. These two communicated like nobody’s business—which was refreshing to read—making their relationship progress fairly seamless from friends-of-friends, to new besties, to lovers and forever partners. Darren and Jeremy were special in that regard—they made true love look easy... and fun.

For me, this was about on par with book one, in terms of quality and enjoyment, but it was perhaps a little less angsty (because of Anson’s in-the-closet turmoil), and instead, was more fun and joyful in tone and telling because of the light that shined bright through Darren in everything he said and did.

This duology was an absolute pleasure to read, and as I said, perhaps some of Riley Hart’s best storytelling yet!!! As far as M/M sports romances go, these books and these characters are not to be missed.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! <3

Flirty. Sexy. Funny. Sweet. Raunchy.

“I’ve never felt this way before. I told you I didn’t think I could feel this way. I’m in, and when I’m in something, I don’t quit. I’m in love with you. I’m not going to let other people’s bigotry fuck that up.”

Darren Edwards, a star quarterback with the Atlanta Lightning, discovers his sexuality is more fluid than he had ever imagined. He also learns that he is capable of love. His struggle with his sexual identity plays out in real time as he falls in love with Jeremy. I love that he lets Jeremy know exactly how he feels at every step of the way—from his growing attraction, feelings of confusion, need to process things, readiness for a relationship and finally, his willingness to sacrifice everything for him.

Our Leading Men
Darren is larger than life—sexy, cocky, funny and a shameless flirt. As one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, he’s used to attention and thrives on it. He comes from a close-knit African American family with humble beginnings; his single mom raised him and his fiercely loyal sister, who’s also his agent. Jeremy Gaines is a recently divorced, successful LA-based lawyer. Jeremy feels lost after a marriage that broke down because of distance and finds himself wanting more out of a relationship moving forward.

Darren’s and Jeremy’s relationship development is delightful to witness. It’s a slow burn romance that begins with occasional texts, until it reaches a point where they can’t end the day without checking in with each other. Darren has always identified as an alpha straight guy and has slept with an endless string of women his entire life. His growing feelings for Jeremy upend his sense of identity. Seeking a sounding board for his inner turmoil, Darren talks to Anson (best friend) who introduces him to the notion of being demisexual and demiromantic.

What I found remarkable is the manner in which Darren handles his identity confusion, adjusting to the changes and embracing them wholeheartedly. In fact, Darren comes across as an incredibly flexible guy for someone who identified as straight his entire life. But along with grappling with labels—he eventually settles on bisexual and demiromantic—being with Jeremy shows him that he is capable of connecting emotionally with someone.

What I Liked
• Darren’s OTT flirtatious, but still dorky nature. He’s cocky yet lovable. He doesn’t filter his comments so one always knows where one stands with him.

• Jeremy is the mature, sexy guy who has his shit together. Caring and protective, he’s incredibly supportive of Darren.

• A beautiful interracial relationship. It’s rare to see black MCs in MM romance and Darren is such a treat. He’s not one dimensional, but a fully realized character. Darren is a smoking hot alpha who is open with his emotions, warm and generous with his time.

• Great emotional development and connection before the guys get down and dirty.

• The smut is hot, but also funny.
“Oh God, it might kill me. Jesus, we’ll really make headlines if you have to call 911 because I died while fucking you.” I laughed. “Shit. Fuck. Don’t do that. Your ass convulses around me when you do.”

Quibbles
• This is just my own preference, but I appreciate a bit more conflict or angst. Darren and Jeremy just clicked seamlessly from the very beginning. And although they had a few bumps along the road, there never seemed to be a major threat to their relationship.

• In a few instances, the OTT flirtatious manner between the couple didn’t quite hit the mark at the very beginning.

• One can’t help but compare this book with the first in the series, and Anson’s and West’s story just seems to have a little edge over this one.

2 God Damnit Riley 🌟

You know, for what it was worth, I had EXTREMELY Low expectations going into this. I was sure I was probably not going to like it and might borderline hating it.

Damnit, this is the one time I hate being right.

Mainly because; This book started off SO WELL. I was like:

The connection 💯
The humor 🤧
The banter 😍
The friendship 💥💥💥
The TENSION ✨✨✨✨

Me: Sure. I can go there. You want me to just bring something for you and Anson?
Troublemaker: Nah, I was thinking I’d come to you. We can get room service and chill for a while. You did come all the way out here to see me.
Me: To watch a football game.
Troublemaker: To see me play a football game.
Me: Tomato/tomahto.

And thennnn it sort of just went downhill from there.

I feel a part of the reason why during the last of his book just made me want to dnf it was the fact that it felt rushed.

Not like pacing wise... But just like, the writing felt really rushed.

It felt like Riley was rushing on a deadline and she was Frankensteining their entire baseline of a relationship in a smoothie that just didn't taste good.

And also, damnit Riley. You did me dirty right there. How dare you exclude the DETAILS.

A couple of days later, I was feeling restless, so I texted Darren to see what he was doing. For all I knew, Anson had put him up to checking on me at the center and he hadn’t really come by just to see how things were going. If I were honest, I’d admit I didn’t believe that.
A quick text exchange followed, and when Darren said he wasn’t up to much, we decided to go to lunch together. We then spent nearly four hours sitting at a patio table at one of Darren’s favorite restaurants in Atlanta.

Honestly, the best part of this boon was Darren (un)filtered and the SWOONIEST Anson and West snippets we saw! I died and fucking swooned more for them than our main couple.

“I don’t think he would have trusted anyone else, so I owe you a thanks too. My honeymoon depended on your answer,” Anson teased, making everyone laugh.
“Are you kidding me? I can’t wait to get you out of the country. I’m hoping we stay naked the whole time,” West answered. “There’s my favorite blush, Bashful.” He cupped Anson’s cheek and kissed him.

“Jesus Christ, West,” Anson said just as I added, “Well played, Weston Calloway.”
“It’s Weston Calloway-Hawkins to you.” He grinned at Anson, and I was pretty sure my best friend went soft inside. Heart eyes shot out of his head, like in a cartoon,

They are more Endgame than Endzone baby.

Also, I just wanna praise Darren. What an incredible character and man he has become since from the start of the Endgame. He truly... left me in awe and just starstruck at the audacity he had to be this powerful as a king.

I figured I could see how things were going or if Jeremy needed my help with anything, not that there was much I could do. I donated money, stopped by and talked about being a football player and stuff like that sometimes, but it was important to me to try. I hadn’t always been the best ally, something I didn’t realize until Anson came out. I hated to think of some of the things I said in the past, including carelessly throwing around the F-word. I was determined to do better.

My gaze went to the nametag—Mikey, He/They/Them. That was new for me, checking someone’s pronouns. It didn’t take a lot of work, and I didn’t know why some people freaked out about it

“I heard you come by sometimes. I mean, we see Anson all the time and that’s crazy, but now you too. I know I don’t look like a football fan, but…”
He was small-boned and had nail polish on. “You look like one to me.” I shrugged. “Anyone can be a football fan.”

We went out, and I climbed into the driver’s seat. I had to adjust it because Darren was taller than me. I swore my body vibrated when the engine rumbled to life.
“Better than sex, right? And you haven’t even driven yet.”
“I’m so sorry,” I replied.
He frowned. “For what?”
“The shitty sex you must be having. Nothing compares to sex with me, not even a car like this.”
“No, no, no, no. Nope. You are not claiming to have better sex than me. I have the best sex.”
I laughed. Jesus, he was ridiculous. I guessed we both were. It was all in good fun, though

Like I said, this book was just POWERFUL at the beginning and j was feeling every flutter and awe giddiness for and at them.

But then as this book went on, it just simmered and gradually turned into... Indifference.

And also, not going to lie, I was getting pissed off HOW at every interaction we were having with literally every goddamn person turned into a sappy "Go You!" "YOU CAN DO THIS!" "I believe in you!" Bullshit. Like YES I know I'm too cynical for my own good but that was just too much. Too much even for my infinite sweet tooth.

Ugk, I sound mean writing that and I just, I get how empowering and supportive and encouraging that sounds. And that's all great BUT JESUS. EVERY DAMN CHAPTER with every damn family member turned into a sap session that was so chessy and mushy gushy I was like: fuck this shit + I need to throw up (and that side effect might have come from my sleep deprived and cramps induced state 😄)

But here's some wise words of they almighty.

“But what if you aren’t sure it can work out? What if there are reasons it’s…difficult? And you aren’t sure you can overcome them.” Maybe it was wrong of me to think of it this way but being with Jeremy would change who I always thought I was, and I didn’t know if I could do that.
“That sounds like an excuse to me.” Momma shrugged. “If someone is worth it, you find a way to make it work even if it’s hard. You’ve never given up a day in your life. You’re better than that, and you know it. If you want something, you gotta fight for it. That’ll make it all the sweeter when you win.”

Even better than book one

OMG I loved this book so much.

There's nothing I love more than a sexual awakening story where a character discovers more about their desires and emotional connection with others.

Darren and Jeremy had both fascinated me in the opening book but even then, I wasn't expecting such a beautiful romance like I got.

What I loved most about this was Darren's utter conviction and commitment to his feelings and to Jeremy.

Once he'd got his head round why he'd never felt that way before, he was utterly in and locked his man down.

There are so many swoony moments in this book it's stupidly hot too, as Darren discovers the many joys of sex with someone you love - and his prostate 😁

Jeremy was an amazingly supportive character too and I seriously appreciated the absolute lack of relationship drama.

Tension is caused by outside forces, understandable ones, realistic ones, and I think Riley handled that aspect of the nattative with skill.

All the rest of the gang is on hand to support our two guys on their road to happiness and I proper cheered at the Epilogue.

i highly enjoyed this book so much! nothing really new but hey if it works, it works. liked jeremy but i think darren fucking edwards carried this from start to finish. loved all the banter, the cheesiness and especially how these two mcs communicated their issues. also, the bi-awakening was done really well too. this is my 4th hart book and she just pushes the right buttons for me. it still got dragged but i didn't cared that much because i was having fun. lastly, i swoon everytime darren calls jeremy as his angel. a bit corny but forgiven! hot men in sports falling for their gay friend will always be top tier to me. like this is the shit for me lmao

I loved Darren and Jeremy as a couple. The first half of the book had me completely hooked. The banter, the phone calls (and phone sex 🔥🔥🔥), Darren discovering his sexuality. It was so much fun.

Then, the second half dragged and dragged. It just lacked something. Angst? Feelings? I don’t know. I was bored out of my mind the last 20%. I even skipped over the last sex scene. 🤷‍♀️

I received an ARC from GRR and this is my honest review.

Well... this book put a smile on my face from start to finish. It was fun, sweet and heartwarming.

What I loved:

1. The Characters:
- Jeremy: A 40-year old lawyer, West's best friend and newly divorced from his husband who he had an open relationship with. Jeremy wanted more, needed more and when he finds all that in Darren, the STRAIGHT quarterback, he can't believe his luck...He fell for the straight guy. #RookieMistake

- Darren: the ultimate bachelor, the ladies' man, the star quarterback... Darren was never attracted to men before... until Jeremy. he doesn't know what happens and how it happens, but an unlikely friendship becomes more. Jeremy is the one he opens up to, talk to, laughs with and he becomes so much more as time goes by. #MyPerson

2. The Plot:
We follow these men as they navigate new aspects of their lives. Jeremy is newly divorced and has to make his own way. Darren is all about his career but is also thinking about his future after that. I loved the communication in this book. These men talked a lot, they didn't ignore anything that happens between them, and resolved everything without drama or unnecessary miscommunication. #OnTheSpot

3. The Romance:
I enjoyed this part quite a but. from their friendship to their amazing banter to their slow-ish burn and then their romantic moments. It was in a word: Heartwarming. I had the biggest smile on my face whenever these guys interacted, through text or face to face. they didn't let anything stand in their way once they decided to be in a relationship. #AllIn

4. Steam-o-meter: STEAMY! So we know that Darren is a gay virgin and he gets all his firsts with Jeremy. Their intimate moments are sweet and swoony. Darren isn't afraid to try anything, and he enjoys EVERYTHING... immensely.

5. Angst-o-meter:
No angst between the MCs. #NoDrama
Low angst from external factors regarding Darren coming out, which don't affect our MCs. #NothingWillComeBetweenUs

6. The HEA:
These guys are happy and have a beautiful family, blood related and otherwise. They are in love and their lives have just begun. #TheRealDeal

3.5. rounded down. First let me say that I LOVE Riley Hart's books. This series is just not fully working for me. This book was not bad by any means but it is not a full win either. I really enjoyed it though. That being said, most reviews I've seen loved the beginning and were more 🤷‍♀️ about the second part. I'm the opposite. In the first part, too much relationship development was summarized for me, their banter was way too sexual and I found them childish. The second part worked better for me BUT Jeremy annoyed me because he was too passive. Darren was carrying all the emotional weigh of the relationship and Jeremy was constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop and not really doing anything about it. They needed to have 2 conversations: one never really happened which was a shame and the second one was initiated by Darren because he was doing the emotional work. I don't feel that I really got to know Jeremy. I really loved Darren and I found his journey really interesting even though the discussions on labels were a bit much for me. I really like this couple though and I was happy for them, I liked the low angst because we didn't get unnecessary drama, they communicated well (that's a staple of Hart's books and why I love their work).
Edit 2 days later : I forgot to mention that Darren is POC, I forgot to mention it because it barely has any impact on the story and that was a missed opportunity to me. I'm not a sports expert but the number of out queer POC is (I think) pretty low so I feel that that aspect should have had more weight in the later part of the story. Darren seems pretty removed from the African-American community which was strange to me and there is like one throwaway line about the discrimination he has been subjected to in his life. Again that seemed rather unrealistic and a miss to me.

Well, this certainly took me by surprise. After reading The End Game, I wasn’t sure how Jeremy and Daren would be as a couple, I shouldn’t have worried at all because I adored their relationship. They were very cute together with their funny games and banter, and of course, their pet names for each other.

Darren’s love for Jeremy was fierce. He didn’t let anything get in his way or try to change the way he felt about Jeremy. His family had his back not matter what. Jeremy was always a little nervous about their relationship and how it might affect his career.

The audiobook was definitely a 5 star. Benjamin Charles (Darren) was swoon worthy. As usual, Iggy Toma was fantastic. The only niggle I had was when Jeremy and West would talk, I had a hard time figuring out who was talking because they sounded very much alike.

Highly recommend!!

Not going to lie. I picked this up just to see what was going on with Anson and West (main characters from the first book in the series) and I'm happy to report they were here a lot (cca 2-3 years after the first book). Jeremy and Darren surprised me, what a funny guys they are, at least in the beginning, and I enjoyed their banter and open communication. The second half was a little bit dragging. Nevertheless, I found this book to be a carbon copy of the first book, so I don't advice to read them in a row.

Really beautiful friends to lovers and bi awakening sports romance.

I put this book off and even questioned reading it because I liked but didn’t love the first book. I’m so glad I chose to read this one and loved every minute. The characters felt very similar to first book, but all the things that bothered me about that book were fixed in this one.

The characters weren’t the same personalities exactly, but still felt similar in certain ways. The sense that they’re all just really good people, one MC has family and the other doesn’t, there’s a large emphasis on a sibling, and the game being so important until it isn’t. While it does have a sense of familiarity, things are different enough to keep it interesting and it’s quite comforting in a way. They’re both just too pure for this world though.

There’s no huge miscommunication or drama! These boys talk and they’re adults. It’s so wonderful to read. Anytime I thought something annoying would happen it didn’t and you were rewarded with pure love and affection. Seriously, some of my favorite moments are right after potential conflicts when the MCs break into sweet declarations of love and commitment.

This also means that there is not a lot of tension of angst in this book. It still manages to be highly entertaining and there is a low thrumming of the sense that something could go wrong, but you just know it won’t. This is a love story that spans months of a relationship and is really only about the development of that relationship. I thought it was incredibly well done and was one of those stories that I’d read even if I knew there’d be no heat. Don’t worry, there’s definitely heat.

I do have to remark on two things that bothered me:

1. Nicknames: The overuse of “Angel” was so annoying. It really pulled me out of the moment at times. “Troublemaker” was no better, but at least it mostly stayed to the text messages and felt more acceptable that way. Still not as bad as the nickname from the first book.

2. This book felt a bit preachy at times, especially considering the audience. It happened enough that it started to bother me. I was okay with Darren feeling some past shame, but he repented! Leave him alone!

I stayed up ridiculously late reading this book, would recommend it to anyone in the mood for low angst, and will probably read it again someday so…full marks!

This was a sweet story, it was quality Riley Hart in the relationship development. I loved their friendship. I like how right from the start despite their differences, Darren and Jeremy click, they have similar humor and banter and it was fun to read.

I also liked that Darren's sexual awakening felt more realistic because it didn't happen overnight or go 0-100. I really like that they discussed the possibility that Darren could be bisexual, pansexual or demisexual ( GFY books always make me think that the 'straight' guy may be some form of demi sooo love that this is mentioned), and how Darren doesn't have a big freak out but accepts his feelings because having Jeremy is more important than labels.

I will say that it did feel like something was missing, the story dragged a bit at times. It's not my favourite Riley Hart book but overall a cute low angst story!

A part of me wishes for Kordell's story, not sure if that is in the works or he has a short story, but I think his book would be just as good as these two!

⭐︎3.5 "End Zone" Stars!⭐︎

Damn. This took me a week to finish. This was slow going for me. Especially the first half. I don't know what it was exactly, but something wasn't quite clicking perfectly for me.

It's like as I was reading, I had to take break after break after break, and would do something else instead a lot. That's the reason it took me so long to finish. Once I reached the halfway mark, things picked up more. It was still a little slow for me, but nothing compared to the first half.

For that alone, I had to give this 3.5 stars. It was just...so sloggish for me. I think it was because nothing was really happening. Even between our two MC's, for a long time it felt stagnant.

The thing is, I liked these two, and they had great chemistry. They are ultimately why I rounded up instead of down.

But as much as I liked and enjoyed them together, there was something....missing. I liked all their talks over the months they were communicating mainly through text, phone convos and FaceTime, I did...but I don't think it quite grabbed me the way I wish it had.

These two, while enjoyable, didn't keep my attention a lot of the time, didn't glue me to the page. And when you have almost half the book with them barely together in person and just a lot of talking...it just ended up feeling slow and like not a lot was happening.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love the getting to know you bits. I love the build up. But I just wish...more had happened, that it had been a little more exciting, that even when they were meeting up, that it felt more...passionate, maybe even a hint of "we have to hide this but we just can't stay away" element, something along those lines.

There was just that something about the first half that had be starting and stopping, starting and stopping, over and over again.

Once we got into the second half, though, things really picked up and that is what saved this book for me. I loved seeing these two more settled, and actual plot things happening. The sex was pretty 'meh' from the beginning - it just didn't feel very steamy at all to me - but it had it's moments.

So overall, this wasn't quite as much a win for me as it seemed for others, but it was still good and enjoyable, especially in the second half, which again, really saved this for me.

So I do recommend this, because hey, I've seen others absolutely adore this installment so I don't know if others will feel that same slowness while reading as I did, and it's definitely worth it for the second half, in my opinion. But still, wasn't my favorite from this author.

Quick witted and sexy banter between these characters was perfect. The friendship building that became more.

Coming off his divorce, Jeremy is a bit out of sorts. The friendship with Darren helps.
They spend more and more time together.

With most books I read, I tend to skim over the non-dialogue parts but not with this one. I read every word. I’m definitely getting this on audio when it comes out. It’s that good! It made me smile and laugh. Their relationship was just SO sweet and sexy. They TALKED and it was SO refreshing to have that, two mature people in a relationship. Communication is hot. Especially theirs. This book made my heart SO happy. I smiled so much.

I highly recommend this book and series!
SO amazing and definitely will go on my re-read list

3.00 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

An angst-free, mostly low-stakes read. I liked Jeremy and Darren, and the first half of the book was fun. The last half, primarily the last 25%, kind of dragged for me. While I enjoyed this more than The Endgame, this is my 3rd Hart book and I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t think this author is a match for me. I don’t want to drag them, or this book, since it’s really just personal preference so I’ll leave it at that. I think this will be a hit for a lot of my GR friends and fellow MM readers.

DNF at 83% - 😬 i can’t believe I’m doing this because I was really enjoying this one but the repetitive dialogue and repetitive internal thoughts I couldn’t do anymore. It was like the same paragraphs were copy and pasted randomly through out. This book could have been cut in half without it. I was starting to roll my eyes too much from reading the same thing over and over so it was time to cut out. Sorry, Darren and Jeremy. Still love you Darren!

“I think sometimes we limit ourselves or close ourselves off to ideas or possibilities, refusing to let ourselves see or feel things for, well, a shit ton of reasons—fear, society, how we’ve been raised, our own preconceived notions.”

**Synopsis:**
After seeing his best friend fall head over heels in love, Jeremy has realized his own open marriage just isn’t giving him what he needs. He ends up getting a divorce, but it’s left him lonely and rethinking some aspects of his career.

When he strikes up a conversation with Darren at a wedding, neither have any idea what it will ultimately lead to. But, their topic of conversation should have been a clue….😉🙂
~ “Don’t knock it till you try it. If the top knows what he’s doing, there’s nothing like a dick in your ass.”

Next thing you know Jeremy and Darren are texting each other and getting to know each other. Next thing you know they are hanging out together. Next thing you know they are joining forces to toilet paper the newlyweds house. Next thing you know they are talking on the phone each night before bed. Next thing you know they can’t fight the attraction. Next thing you know……well, you know. 😀

** The following are my thoughts about this book: **

* * I liked their “this or that” game. Great way to get to know each other without any pressure

* * I liked Darren’s attitude and his easy going ways. He had a great sense of humor and was very enjoyable. And Jeremy was just as great. After his realization of what he truly wanted in a partner, I was really rooting for him to have everything he wished for.

* * Anson and West (from book 1) have a presence in this book and I enjoyed the way they were part of this story.

* * I can’t put my finger on why, but I just wasn’t as invested in Jeremy and Darren as I was in West and Anson (book 1).
Jeremy and Darren definitely brought the steam, but I just felt like a little something was missing in their connection. Maybe it was the insecure feelings Jeremy had about them as a couple, which translated into less of a connection for me. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Even after they professed their love, Jeremy was wondering what would happen to them if Darren got traded. The fact that Jeremy didn’t know where Darren’s head was at just made me feel like something was missing in their relationship.

* * the major struggle in this book is Darren’s examination of why he’s attracted to Jeremy when he’s never been attracted to a man before. It was a good topic, but do we always have to attach a label to everything?

**Overview:**

Overall Opinion: Meh. I guess I was just underwhelmed. It’s no secret that I’m a sports romance junkie — so I had to give this a shot! It wasn’t bad or anything, it just fell flat for me. I like the romances that start out as texts and long distance and this fit that bill, but once they got together I felt a big “whomp, whomp” because it was just meh. Very low drama, characters were kind of surface level, and even the sex scenes felt lackluster to me. Overall, just an okay read for me.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Jeremy and Darren’s story. They meet because their best friends just got married and form up an instant friendship. The friendship turns into nightly texts and face calls and Darren starts to question his sexuality because for the first time he is attracted to a man. Jeremy isn’t all that eager to jump into a relationship with a questioning man but cannot deny the pull he feels towards Darren. There is some fun banter, some sexy times, and some mild drama…and they get a HEA ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Jeremy and Darren’s POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good for the most part. It did seem to slow down for me once they decide to be in a relationship. I never skimmed.

Instalove:No, but friends to more.

H1 (Hero #1) rating: 3 stars. Jeremy. He was alright. I liked how loyal he was.

H2 (Hero #2) rating: 3 stars. Darren. He was just alright too. I liked how he was accepting of his new relationship.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: No

Heat level: Alright. They have some tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: No

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: No

Possible Triggers: Not really

Closure: This ends with what I would call a HEA just because

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

I remember describing the Endgame as a long love letter. It was just so well written and sweet I was worried about that level being held up in The End Zone.

Well I didn’t need to worry. I anticipated this book as soon as Riley announced it, abandoned the middle of my current read to start this ARC.

Simply put, every word of this book was lovely. It was well written, and I was invested in the characters right off the bat. Jeremy and Darren’s playful connection just creates a warm theme that continues throughout the book. It was the perfect formula of an awakening love story. Acquaintances to friends to hesitant lovers to one of the sweetest relationships I’ve ever read. I think I may have loved this more than Endgame, and I LOVED Endgame. Riley has written A LOT of books, most of which I have read. But these two books are special and possibly some of her best work. I just want to curl up and read more about them.

If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. This is at the top of my best of 2021 now.
