I went into this thinking it was yuri because two girls were holding hands on the cover and boy was I wrong. I didn’t realize until about a chapter into the book how much of the “Higurashi when they cry” lore is required to understand what the hell is going on. Several research articles later, I learned that the actual story is way less interesting than the transmedial history of the franchise.

Rika and Satoko finally, finally have the chance to grow up together after all their terrible trials, and have a nice high school life.

. . . or maybe not. This is Higurashi, after all, and Higurashi's all about trauma.

I genuinely enjoyed the new elements that the first chapter or two of this first volume of MEGURI brought to the story. Seeing older versions of all the characters--including Shion--was great. Satoko looks nice with longer hair.

Once the two girls get to high school, the storytelling feels more generic. Maybe it's because both Rika and Satoko have molded themselves to fit into St. Lucia (one more successfully than the other) that they don't feel entirely like themselves.

More intensity from Rika's "three character designs" St. Lucia friends would have added flavor to an otherwise bland and predictable plot. Even when they're plotting against Satoko, they don't have a single personality trait between them, much less anything deeper like a reason to befriend or hate the new girl/s.

Satoko's one attempt to make Rika recall their common past while they're at St. Lucia backfires horribly. St. Lucia enforces a very specific type of conformity, and if you don't measure up, it's into solitary for you. There are plenty of opportunities to lose your grasp on sanity, even without a handy injection of Oyashiro-sama's curse.

The latter chapter or two of this volume shows Satoko's plight nicely. Though so far, even ignoring the predictability of the boarding school elements, I'm not seeing what new MEGURI is bringing to the table beyond what we've already seen in the first set of Higurashi arcs. Its take on trauma is near-identical, which is disappointing. There's also an older-looking version of Hanyu, who never grew on me the first time around. Both she and Satoko are treating this as a game, though it's evident that

I'm keeping an open mind on this one. I don't feel like Ryukishi's plotting and take on theme has improved all that much in 20 years, to be honest. I do like Tomato Akase's storytelling, and the scenes they added beyond the anime* fit well and added depth to the characters' interactions. This franchise has developed a hydra-like shape over the last 20 years (!), and there's only so many sidetracks and re-imaginings I'll see fit to care about, but I'll continue to follow this one.

* which I haven't watched. I learned about the additional scenes through their afterword. Maybe I'll try watching this part of it. The GOU part of it didn't impress me much, and I've liked the manga better.

i want to start off by saying i am a massive fan of the higurashi vn, ive read every single one and even some of the bonus chapters , i bought this because i didnt want to watch the anime because of how much it changed and cut out of the vn, so i thought ‘oh the manga must be better then the anime…!’ i was wrong…😞 some of these things just wouldnt happen?? rika cares so much about satoko as seen in chapter 7 and 8 when we are in rika’s perspective so she definitely wouldnt just leave satoko out like that?? i mean its a good book ( kinda ) just like half of these things just wouldnt happen especially how much rika cared for satoko in the vn, its hard to believe she’d just basicallt abandon her like that?? im saying all this bad stuff but i will definitly buy the next volume😞

Don't get me wrong, Gou-Soutsu is still shit, but Meguri is talking some sense, given its shit premise?

I mean we have:
1. motive; Rika was always capable of surviving by leaving Hinamizawa, but her friends were her motivation to stay; now Hanyuu being the one to push her to leave actually makes more sense than Rika randomly deciding this for herself;
2. inclusion of everyone, instead of making it a half baked yuri;
3. Shion mentioned! Shion is acknowledged both as a part of their group, as a person with a righteous sense of justice and as an actual student at the Santa Lucia Academy.
4. no more bashing on Irie pls, he's putting not one, but two girls through a super expensive private high school. 2 girls he owes nothing!

La primera versión de Higurashi para la que no hace falta media literacy (porque la parte gay deja de estar en el subtexto)
