This picks up 7 years later from where book 1 ends. We see Nikolai in prison as he was convicted of killing Silvio and his reputation in prison is exactly as you would imagine. He has nothing to live for and is just abiding his time until he gets out to seek revenge on the ones responsible for killing his love.
We also see Sophia living in Maine as Sophie Rossi an art schoolteacher. We find out WHY she left and oh boy it's tough. She ends up pregnant by Nikolai and finds out just after he was arrested at the end of the first book and her father gives her an ultimatum: Abortion or never show up again or he will kill Nikolai and their child, so with the help of her older brother she leaves and seeks out a new life away from it all but is forced to be DEAD by her father’s request.
Nikolai is finally free from prison and as he seeks his revenge he finds out an interesting bit of info about Sophia and how she is not dead but no reason as to why she faked it is given to him or known.
You know how he was unhinged in the first book? Yeah well welcome to a whole new level in this one.
He finds her and wants to cause her (not actual physical harm) but emotional and mental as he has been dealing with for 7 years. He stalks her to the point of insanity, and she knows he is there but fears how he will feel once he finds out the real truth about her reason and their son Leo.
My one issue with this book was how long it took for him to find out about Leo and her reasons. We did not get enough time to settle him as his father and their relationship. Wished it had happened sooner!
There is a lot that happens in this book and honestly it's all so intense. He has no mercy for anyone, and he has possibly lost his mind but it's only at peace with her.
He spends a good portion of the book believing she does not love her or ever cared about him, and she used him as a way to be free. It's heartbreaking how much pain he is in for someone who WE KNOW is in love with him and protected him. She was celibate for the 7 years of their separation, and he also was (obviously he was in prison) but it also never crossed his mind to ever be with anyone once he got out and still thought she was dead. She is his life and honestly it was sweet how he thought of her and how broken he was.
I loved this duet, and it was such a rollercoaster ride to get to their HEA, but we finally did, and I am so happy for them.
Here are a few quotes I loved:
''Her death had ripped away what little sanity I'd had left''
''Was it a crime to not want you to die? Was it a betrayal to care that you lived, even without me?''
''It was heartbreaking. In his eyes, I was a real villain''
Wow. This was amazing. Truly one of my favorite mafia romances ever with the boy obsessed trope! So worth the read ajsjsksksksk🤗 My only complaint is that we didn't get enough father-son bonding moments between Leo and Niko...would have loved to see more of that🥹 But I digress.
safety squad: - no OW/OM drama (OW tries to flirt with the H but he shoots her down - very rudely - and threatens her lol I LOVED THAT THE STUPID BITCH HAD IT COMING) - no cheating/sharing - no condoms - celibate MCs (during seperation) - breeding kink, cockwarming, primal play - secret baby - mafia romance - second chance-ish vibes (H was in prison for 7 years) - boy obsessed (H has been obsessed with the h for 12 years and hasn't looked/been with another woman since) - OTT J/P H - HEA (book 2 in a duet)
2.5 stars, rounded up based on enjoyment rather than quality
***spoilers***
Seven years after the first book ended, we find Nikolai about to be released from the prison where he earned his nickname, The Executioner, by dispensing his own form of justice to fellow prisoners he finds irredeemable. With Sofia dead, he’s become a clinical, soulless monster whose only purpose is to seek vengeance and die.
His first stop: Sofia’s grave.
I backed onto a bench, positioned to look at the boring patch of ground that now held my little swallow’s cage. A prison she’d never escape. A bird flew from the underbrush right then, and I gazed upward, following its flight. Maybe I had it all wrong. Maybe in death, she’d escaped. Maybe she’d finally flown far, far away.
I appreciated the gentle, poetic moment. It contrasted sharply with his rage and sense of betrayal when he found out that Sofia had disappeared instead of died.
When Sofia discovered she was pregnant soon after Nikolai was incarcerated and refused to have an abortion at her father’s command, he had disowned her, banished her, and told her she would be dead to the world or she and her son and Nikolai would be dead, period. So she’d changed her name, moved to Maine, had her baby boy Leo, who had Nikolai’s eyes, and became an art teacher, living on her earned income and struggling to pay the medical bills because Leo was on dialysis, needing a kidney donor. I had to adjust my attitude about Sofia. She hadn’t gained any IQ points, but she was taking care of herself and her son on her own, no small accomplishment.
Needless to say, Nikolai finds her and his first form of punishment was, um, pretty fitting. Then he stalks her for awhile, tests her, and all she has to do to make it stop is be honest with him but, being the intellectual giant that Sofia is and the author needing to make her that stupid to drive the plot, this goes on for awhile until Nikolai discovers he has a son.
Which prompts a few more genuinely touching moments. Predictably, Nikolai is a perfect donor match for his son. When his friend from prison tells him that sometimes a kidney transplant has to be repeated in future years, Nikolai says it’s not a problem, he’ll just give him his other one then. And he would too.
Sofia’s father had to interfere in the end, met his end, and then The End. While this book is never going to be a classic, at least it’s comprehensible, which the first book in the duet wasn’t.
unfortunately this duet isn't for me, it just didn't hold my interest.
this picked up 7 years later, and that's really a long time which i'm not a fan of. i get the options given to sofia and i don't blame her. she needs to protect her kid more than her own life.
but it didn't sit well with me that niko knew about his son at 60% of the book, had his first conversation with him at 79%. i mean he lost so much years already, why do they have to finally interact at the last 20% of the book? i would've wanted to see him as a father and his relationship to his son, it was a little too late for my own taste.
as for sofia, she took all the aggressions of niko at the beginning cuz she knew she hurt him. but i'm glad that she didn't let him walk all over her and never became a doormat heroine.
overall, this was still a good read, only didn't work for me.
Overall I loved this duet- even though I wish the second book was longer I ate them both up! Niko and Sofia went through so much and spent many years apart from each other but that never changed their feelings towards one another- especially Nikos obsession which if your into the boy obsessed trobe- THIS ONES FOR YOU
This book started out promisin but the MCs are back to “the cat and mouse game” nothing new.
I liked the hero in the previous book but in this book he was MEH. The heroine didn't change she's the same girl who has betraying body syndrome, and i didn’t understand why she didn’t tell him the truth and about their son!! It took her too long.
Safety:
Kinda spoiler!
— Separation for 7 years : This book picks up seven years after their separation and both were celibate (the hero was in prison during separation) — Secret baby (He didn’t know about his son until about 60%) — misunderstanding! — OM : Some guy tries to get into her pants but she rejects him every time. — Not really OW : Some girl wanted to hang out and he told her he was married but she didn't care because he wasn't wearing a ring!! She gave him her number but he rudely pushed her away. — No Cheating
Things i didn’t like:
— The H gave the h oral while she was drugged/asleep (in this book and the previous one). — He locked her in the coffin for revenge against her because he thought she was dead during separation!!!
Did I just find a 5 ⭐️ Mafia duet??? Yes, yes I did 🤩🖤
We pick up from that cliffhanger!!
We see that Nikolai has spent years in jail and is becoming no more unhinged every day as he still mourns the loss of Sophia….until he is told something that turns his world upside down. With the help of new character Bran, who is a jovial HOT AF Irishman he met in jail, they set off to unravel the secrets of where Sophia could be.
He finds Sophia and he has one thing on his mind, make her pay for leaving him and keeping so many secrets….until the love he feels for her is far greater than any revenge he could ever want… Not to mention when he finds out the whole truth….
This duet is mind blowing! The spice is amazing and in general a 5⭐️ read for me!
Okay so.. book 2.. well, I didn't hate it like I thought I was going to at the start.
Two things I really dislike: time jumps and secret babies. And I was slammed with both at the start.
Niko back in prison for a long stint AGAIN, Sophia in hiding with a sick son.. it was rough.
So.. I skimmed until they were back in each other's vascinity. 🤷♀️ With no shame, because otherwise I was gonna DNF. The story choices are just not my fave but I loved these characters so I wanted to keep going.
Niko kept me reading though and his reaction to what happened to Sophie and Leo was perfection.
So I still think this duet is worth it, but I was struggling.
I was hooked when the cliffhanger happened. I had to know what was going to happen next and yes I did get mad at the FMC for dragging it out and not using her voice to explain certain things. The twist and turns kept going and I WANTED that HEA. This book was is darker than the first but still enjoyable. I would recommend if you like mafia, forced proximity, second chance, possessiveness and a beauty and the beast vibe.
4.5 stars - overall I loved this duet. I feel like the first book was kind of slow overall because it was building for the second but a good balance. I HATED the seven year time jump that was crazy but I understood why. One thing I loved about Niko is he was down BAD like once he figured everything out and even before so it was just her like only going to be her forever and she was the same. 10/10 love a down bad man.
4.5 🌟 If you've read this, then you already know I'm crazy. Because... Nikolai Nikolai Nikolai 🖤 The crazier he was, the more I loved him. It's completely worth the ride. 🎢 would ride again for sure. 😝
Time jump ruined story. The kid is way too old for the book to be good if he was a toddler or a baby then book would have been enjoyable but instead the book was ruined because all I felt was sadness that he missed so much of his sons life. She is almost 30 and still not smart or good at taking care of herself or her son. Heroine 1 star hero 5 star but time jump made story 1 star so I found this to be a 1 star read.
i loved this one even more than the first one- i read it in one sitting🤭 especially the fact that i never got bored while reading is a huge plus point for me cause duets are either a hit or miss. either you can't put the book down or you get bored while reading the second one cause everything already happened in the first one🥲
It's the epic conclusion to a wonderful duet and I loved everyone second of it. The main leads were fabulous and the plot and pace of the book was wonderful. Such a great duet.
Great end to this duet. I was a little disappointed that everything didn't come together until halfway through so there was less sweetness in this to balance the violence. I can't wait to read Brand's book.
1.7/5- wanted to see if it got better and it really didn’t. happy that they got their happy ending but the smut was better. still really meh. im avoiding starting cc2 if people can’t tell.
No fue para mi. La idea de la historia, es buena, pero no me gustó el desarrollo. Demasiado extensa la situación alrededor del reencuentro que podría haberse resuelto con un simple diálogo.
Part of the Made of Mayhem Duet the saga continues with our two favorite people but with a little bit of everything thrown their way so once again, hang on and double check that you are buckled up, dangerous men, alpha’s personified, possessive, oh, gorgeous, brooding all the makings of a story consisting with three D’s (dark, delicious, and dirty) 😊. There will be suspense, betrayal, death, darkness, secrets reveled, violence, hope, forgiveness, and maybe even love (ALL THINGS TO EXPECT FROM THE MAFIA WORLD). By the time you’ve figured out who is who and what is what, you’re already hooked, and you may as well give up the fight and prepare yourself for an all-nighter! CAN’T SAY YOU WEREN’T WARNED!!!!! Picking up where we left off in book one with Niko going to prison thinking he was betrayed a hot mess while in prison unhinged to the point of nearly tripping over the crazy scale meeting a new friend who becomes his brother in a sense fast forward years and he is out with revenge at the top of the list. He and his friend Bran who is just as unhinged as him go on a killing spree taking out everyone who betrayed him starting with his girl’s family but mainly, he wants his girl. Sophia has since changed her name, working in a high school teaching, she has the freedom she wanted so badly thanks to him. But the moment he gets out finding her but the things he does to her are heartbreaking at times he knows in his hear it is wrong, but he can’t help himself after being locked up angry at everyone taking it out on her until she reveals the truth about why she did what she did he understand that she has an always will choose him but she needed to protect her boy…his boy, when he realized she was always in his corner but will she forgive him for what he did to her, will he feel wanted, will he understand that he is wanted, he is loved, and will they find the happiness they need so badly?.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Review - So, if you read book 1 of this duet Malevolent King you will know the major cliffhanger, we were all left on. I immediately jumped right into book 2 and literally didn't put it down until I got my HEA! After the ending of the last book, we see a 7-year time jump since Nikolai is sent to prison. Upon his release he is completely unhinged and set on burning the world to the ground until he finds out Sofia is still alive. He sees that what she has done as a betrayal and proceeds to hunt her down to make her pay for said betrayal until he finds out all the secrets she has been keeping from him.
The world building and character development for both of these characters was so beautiful to see as it all unfolded. I was always on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happened next. I enjoyed every second of this ride and was so sad it had to end. I am curious though as to if we will see any future books with other characters in them. I for one would love to see a story about Bran!
Thank you so much to Smuthood and Mila for allowing me to ARC for this duet. As a sucker for Mafia this hit all the right spots and was just fantastic!
Runaway Queen picks up several years after Malevolent King, with Nikolai more unhinged thanks to the devastating ending from book one, and now a free man who is out for blood.
Nikolai goes on a rampage looking for answers in an attempt to take out Sofia’s father, but things go sideways when he learns the truth and soon starts chasing after a ghost.
~*SpOiLeR aLeRt*~ Sofia is alive and now Sophie Rossi, an art teacher at the local high school, and hiding one hell of a secret. Little does she know that Nikolai is coming and when he does, he’s going to make her pay.
After tormenting her a good bit, Niko finally learns why Sofia lied to him, and his whole world gets flipped upside down. Everything changes and Niko goes above and beyond for his family.
Wowza, I seriously did not want to end. My heart felt so full while reading and now that it’s over I kinda feel empty haha make it make sense. Mila has a way with words where she makes dark things sound romantic and poetic and I’m totally here for it.
As always, I adored Nikolai and his weird ‘joker’/ dark humorous ways. It’s like twisted comedic relief. So much of what he says are obvious red flags in reality but in fiction, I accept it as romantic. Sofia seemed way more confident and strong here and I love to see it. Would’ve been cool to see more of Chiara, Angelo & Leo though. The plot felt like it lacked a lil as well compared to the first book in the duet. I still loved it regardless though, such a great ending to this story. Can’t wait to read more by Mila (especially about Bran, the guy really grew on me haha)
