Mary King resides in a new, expanding Amish community in Vinton, Ohio, one which is flourishing and succeeding in its quest of setting down new roots. That is, until a deadly influenza outbreak sweeps through the neighborhood - like a whirlwind - causing illness and heartbreak in its wake.
The community is in crisis, what with the soaring medical bills, for which there are no funds, not to mention the townsfolk who have been stricken with the virus and are not able to maintain their farms and businesses. With no money in reserve, the disaster seems almost impossible to handle.
Mary’s brother-in-law, Ike Eicher, is now reduced to selling off his prized Jersey cattle, simply to make ends meet.
Mary desperately wants to help her friends and neighbors but is forbidden from doing so due to the risk to her own already poor health.
When wealthy Amish farmer Abram Lantz arrives to purchase Ike’s livestock, Mary can’t help but be drawn to him — especially when it becomes obvious that he is willing to do anything to help her and Ike in their time of need.
Can Mary and Abram find a way to be together, even though her own family have doubts about his true intentions?
Surely no one can tear apart their love for one another when it becomes clear this is all a part of Gott’s glorious plan?

A sweet story of family support through illness and a determined suitor to win against family disapproval without good reason. I felt like cheering aloud at the end to find Mary’s dad acting with civility toward Mary’s suitor Abram.
