“Have you ever stopped to consider which one of us is truly prey?” She still spoke in a soft purr, her tone somehow both menacing and sensual. “Maybe, human, we hunt you.”

Vampire Hunter László Fidatov finally snares his first kill, but his prize isn’t anything like he’s been taught to expect. With her dark, luxurious hair and red lips, she is every inch a woman. Drawn to the unexpected vulnerability in her eyes, he wrestles with an immediate, powerful attraction to his vampire enemy…never imagining the ugly consequences of his forbidden feelings.

Vika Năstase is desperate to escape her people, but she’s trapped in a miserable life by her blood-need. Unable to refuse a hopeless mission against a Hunter, she must do the impossible - seduce her darkly handsome adversary into accepting a truce.

But when tragedy strikes, László and Vika are once again thrust into opposite worlds. Embroiled in an age-old vendetta, both soon realize that their happiness can only be won by defying those who would keep them apart.

Interesting concept to this story and it has a lot of potential. The sex scenes seemed a little awkward but then I realized someone who knew nothing about sex would have a hard time describing the act. I am curious to follow up on the characters and see where their journeys lead them.

Different, darker take on vampires - they are dying. The human hunters are not the good guys, and the H leaves his 'family' after being tortured. He's fallen for the h, who was tortured by her 'family', so he saves her and they run away together. It was OK.

"Prey" by Tracy Tappan. Book 4.5 in the Community series.

This novella is NOT to be read as a stand alone. You have to read the first 4 books to really understand this novella.

The story is actually a prequel to the series according to the timeline of the story line but really must be read in order. The story focuses on two characters, Laszlo, a vampire hunter, and Vika, a vampire. There are hints that a romance could develop between them but it's something we haven't seen yet in the development of the series so far. The story is basically a history of how the Varcolac (vampire community) started finding Dragon woman.

The story is not too long but it is very informative to readers of the series. I really liked it.

Vita is a vampire. Once night, while stealing suplies and food, with two other, she is caught by Vampire Hunter László. But as he looks at her, he sees her sadness and submission to her impending death.
She's a woman.
One he cannot kill.
“Have you ever stopped to consider which one of us is truly prey?” She still spoke in a soft purr, her tone somehow both menacing and sensual. “Maybe, human, we hunt you.” Vita tells him.
And he lets her go.
For surving while the two other vampires were killed, Vita receives 5 lashes as punishment.
But she follows the Vampire Hunter László, as ordered, to seduce him. She believes she will be unable to complete this task, but László is already falling for her.
For allowing a vampire to live, László is beaten by the Vampire Hunters and indoctrinated in the belief that all vampires are undead, and that Vampire Hunters are saviors. But he knows better. And when the meeting between the Vampires and the Vampire Hunters occurs, and he sees Vita, he warns the vampires, that they are walking into a trap.
Following the botched meeting Vita and László run into a barn and decide to run away together:
"You're a good, noble man, and I don't want to be your enemy anymore"
László, Vita and his brother Anatol un away to America, where they begin life anew.

It was a memorable read in all the right ways. The characters are really interesting, so well developed you'll think they're based on living people. The story was not what I was expecting at all.
I wanted, and still do want to know more about the key characters because their story is going to be so very interesting--the challenges they have ahead of them. I know one of the characters appear in another of Tracy's books, but that's not nearly enough for me. Like Oliver, please may I have some more.
I love these books, though they inspire my imagination on so many levels. It’s a great book to curl up with and ignore the day to day reality.

Tracy Tappan is a new author for me, so I had no preconceived ideas of what to expect when it came to the story telling. And I'm pleased to announce I've found a new author to enjoy. I don't read about vampires often and when I do, it's sometimes hard for it to hold my attention for any length of time. But this one was different. Not only did it hold my attention but made me laugh at the humor that was sprinkled throughout the story. The characters have quirky personalities that make them relatable and the storyline itself will keep you entranced. This is a short prequel to The Community Series but it packs a punch never the less.

Excellent Intro Novella for the Series!

Prey, written by Tracy Tappan, is an intro novella to The Community Series. This is the first story I have read by the author, but it won't be the last. This story throws the reader right into the actions happening between humans and vampires. The story is fast paced, action packed, has danger, adventure, family and love. Additionally, the later part of the story sets the stage for the first full length book in the series. With the intriguing questions posed from this novella, I am looking forward to reading the first book in this series.

This is a short introduction to The Community series, and it’s an extremely good one! I will tell you vampires are not one of my favorite paranormal tropes, but after reading this prequel I am hooked on this series. It’s an intriguing and unique premise which grabs your attention from the beginning and holds you enthralled beyond the end. Fair warning, you will be left wanting more but in a very good way. Whether vampires are your thing or not, I highly recommend this very engaging and captivating tale!

I'd forgotten how deliciously clever you were at sucking us in....get it...ha ha ha. Seriously, you are great at wetting our appetite for the rest of the story. What happens to Anatol, will we see Laszlo again -and is he the "patient zero" cure for the barrenness curse on the vampires? I also love how we see the difference between the "old" vampires in the homeland and the hunky bad boys of San Diego. Yum. Just redownloaded book 1 of the Community series-"The Bloodline Wars" to refresh my memory.

Strange concept!

A Vampire Hunter has a heart that doesn’t want to stake a female vampire that he was chasing. Laszlo is the Hunter and Vijay is his prey. But they have to run to the US when Laszlo is labeled a traitor and his entire family is to be killed. Anatol, Laszlo’s younger brother, makes it to Sam Diego and finally finds a group of vampires to join with. But they are not impressed with him and take him hostage where he overhears some things he shouldn’t! Vampires can procreate??!!

Love this series! As a black dagger brotherhood fan, I often struggle with finding a book/ series that holds my attention and enthusiasm. This is it! This quick read is just a taste of the rest of the series, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you're looking for a action packed adventure, loaded with all the feels and swoon worthy men, you won't be disappointed.
I received an ARC for an honest review.

This is a short introduction to The Community Series and i enjoyed reading it.

This is a well written, light, easy read. The characters are great to read and the story being a prequel gave some extra insight into the series.

Having read the other books in the series and thoroughly enjoyed them, i was very happy with this......and it was free! The only problem now is i really fancy re-reading the others :)

Read them all if you are a fan of vampire fantasy books, this is an excellent series.

Honestly, I am not quite sure how I feel about “Prey.” Although this is a novella it was two stories in one. The first was of the brother Laslo and second was of Anatol, both of whom are vampire hunters.

The book started out with a rather unique story concept but was lacking in depth and complexity. Yes, this is a novella but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t have a level of sophistication. At this point I’m not sure if I will be going on with the series. I need to think on it some more.

This story took a bit for me to get into it. I was lost amid the story. Another reviewer mentioned that reading the first 4 books would help and I think she is right. Once I did get into it, I started to like it. The characters are so different from the other stories I read but they work their into your head anyways.

A unique spin on hunters and vampires. Well-written and solid characters.
Liszlo, a hunter, has heard stories of the demon vampires all his life. His first encounter with one proves everything he's been told is a lie..Vika will change his views and prove with love, a man will move heaven and hell to be with his true love. A captivating story.

Great prequel to the series. Unfortunately I read the series before I got this book. But that being said I totally enjoyed it. Now I have to go back and re-read the series because for some reason I don't remember Anatoli and his brother and his brother running off with a Vampire. UGH

This short story has an interesting concept and strong world building, but everything else fell flat with some of the dialogue/ thoughts sounding awkward. It just didn't work for me.
