Shadowing Jane #1

My Neighbor, The Vampire

Rate this book
Samuel was never supposed to stay in New York City. Jane hadn't imagined leaving.

After Samuel is summoned to the city by his wicked 'uncle' and a cult of shadowy vampire overlords, he's forced to blend in, pretend to be human, and find an acceptable place to take up residence.

However, his new human neighbor's sensual moans each night are driving him crazy, and he wonders if he'll survive the experience intact.

Especially when an intruder breaks into her home and Samuel busts through the wall in order to protect her.

His scheme to break away from the Night Order's influence is now ruined, and since she's witnessed his true nature, the girl's life is unavoidably entwined with his. With limited options, he makes the only possible decision;

To disappear with her.

This is book one in the Shadowing Jane series, and involves broody vampires, blood lust, a mafia type vampiric organization, hot neighbor next door tropes, and a human heroine thrust into a dangerous supernatural world. Tighten those boot straps, ladies and gents, because this one will be quite the ride. For Adult audiences only.

Should I read in order?
The series should be read in order as this does end on a cliffhanger, but this is the first book in Harlow’s Shadowing Jane series.

Basic plot:
Samuel is back in the city and has the most tempting neighbor. She has no idea he’s a vampire, of course, and that’s how it needs to stay...until she needs help and his unnatural powers are seen.

Give this a try if you want:
- Paranormal romance in contemporary time period (vampires and humans)
- New York city setting until they are in hiding
- vampire hero/human heroine
- full figured heroine
- on the run
- protective, dirty talking hero
-
- higher steam – 5 full scenes with some good tension building in the beginning

Ages:
- Hero is 194 years, heroine 22

First lines:
”You’re obligated to be here, Samuel.”
Rune watches me from his seat across the room, a brandy in one hand a girl’s wrist in the other. He smiles, teeth gleaming red beneath the blue light.

My thoughts:
I haven’t read a vampire hero in forever and I found this one really fun!

This is on me because I don’t really look at a book synopsis before diving in but I didn’t realize this was going to be a multi-book story. So parts of the story did feel a bit slow to me and I wasn’t sure how things would be resolved in the amount of pages. But once I saw it was continuing (not sure how many books the series will be) then I was able to settle into it more.

I love protective heroes that are all in from pretty much the get-go and I found that here with Samuel. Being neighbors gave them lots of opportunities to be near each other, and once he decides to take her on the run to keep her save, there was tons of delicious forced proximity that I adored.

We don’t get a ton of background yet for Samuel (I’m sure more is coming in later books) but just enough to have you fall in love with him and be curious about more of his past. I loved how romantic he was, from requesting wine and two glasses before he even knew Jane to all the things he does throughout the story.

Jane works the overnight shift at a coffee place and is trying to recover from a stalker/harassing customer. I really loved Jane’s character, adored the plus sized rep! I do think she’s being a bit naive about some of the vampire related things going on, but I’m hopeful for more from her character in the next book.

The steam to me was great. I loved the build up of tension in the beginning of the book and some really sweet and steamy scenes happened. Samuel is a romantic at heart and he’s so in love with Jane I couldn’t help but swoon!

Brenna Harlow is officially on my watch list for PNR authors 😉

Thoughts
Samuel wasn't supposed to return to New York, but when his uncle summons him, he has no choice but to obey his order. However, he hadn't expected to be intrigued by his neighbor, Jane. And that isn't a good thing, why? Because Jane is human.

Everything takes an unexpected turn when Jane is attacked, and Samuel inadvertently exposes his true identity in his attempt to save her. Now, they are in a desperate situation and forced to flee together.

Samuel's character captivated me from the beginning with his undeniable presence and intriguing personality.
Jane left her hometown, moved to New York, and never imagined she would have to leave again. She is working night shifts and after banning a customer for assaulting her, she starts receiving threatening messages and soon realizes she's being stalked. It's around that time Samuel shows up in her life.

When Samuel and Jane cross paths, the spark of attraction is immediate. The book picks up quickly and is full of suspense that won't let you go. It's the perfect choice if you're looking for a quick and engaging read that will keep you hooked from the start. I found it to be an ideal book to sink into between other books.

However, it's important to note that the story ends on a cliffhanger, leaving you anxiously awaiting the next installment. So, be warned! All in all, this book is an exciting and engaging experience that will leave you wanting more.

I know I’m not the only one that got sucked into Twilight. Brenna Harlow was kind enough to write an adult spicy version, because let’s be honest if I was Bella I’d have probably bailed by part way through New Moon.. if you’re going to be that difficult about safety she should get more than kisses surely, but whateves. Right back to the actual book I read.

Samuel and Jane find themselves as unlikely neighbors—since he’s undead and has zero desire to be in NYC. He has no idea why he’s drawn to her, but he absolutely can’t help himself from listening through her walls to hear her moans. She totally gets his appeal—I mean the dude is a bangin hot vampire right? She’s not dumb. But when he catches something that sounds a bit more like fear than pleasure our suddenly protective vampire busts through the wall to come to Jane’s rescue. The only catch? Now that she knows what he is they need to disappear and quickly before the shadowy vampire society extinguishes them both.

This is part one of a duet and ends on a cliffhanger—I nearly threw my phone Brenna!

HOWEVER, Jane and Samuel’s storyline is very compelling and definitely worth the near heart attack at book one’s end. So I’ll just be here (not so) patiently waiting for part two so I can find out what happens for these two characters—um hey Brenna can I beg/volunteer for an ARC for book two?

That cliffhanger go crazy

This was so good...what?! I actually download a free book on Kindle at 1am and it isn't complete trash?! Mark this moment in history because it probably will never happen again.

SAMUEL MF GRAVESTONE IS A CATCH!!! No one is doing it like this Vampire is. I love him with all my heart. I love Jane too, but she kinda stupid.

This is my official declaration that I will no longer buy the ‘spicy’ books recommended to me via my TikTok fyp. They only take the small good parts and promote the hell out of it.

This book is SO corny. It is SO trope-y. They’re all of a sudden obsessed with each other. They’re all of a sudden so in love, after what, days?!

I feel like this storyline had so much more opportunity and it was just Edward and Bella stuck in the woods with Jasper and Emmett.

The sex scenes are literally the same scene, just reworded.

This is really giving Wattpad.

Heads up on this one, friends - BIG OL’ CLIFFY at the end of this bad boy! I need the next book RIGHT NOW!!! This book gave me grown up Twilight vibes. I really really enjoyed it. Our heroine, Jane is a plus size barista who works nights in New York City (I think). She is sleep-walking her way through life when a new neighbor moves in next door to her in her apartment complex. He is mysterious and sexy and Jane can’t stop thinking about him. I was fascinated by Samuel’s past and the vampire culture in this world. He is immediately taken with Jane. There’s just something about her that draws him in. It has reawakened him in and makes him feel extremely possessive and protective.

I loved the chemistry between the hero and heroine and how quickly things really started moving in this story. I hope we get to learn more about both Samuel and Jane’s pasts in future books because they both have really interesting backstories from what this book revealed. I also adored Sam’s ‘brothers’ Francis and Matthew. These men were intriguing and I am holding out hope that we might get books for them as well! This story followed a pretty predictable formula, but it didn’t take away from the richness of the plot or the appeal of the characters. If you love paranormal vampire romance novels, this book will DEFINITELY tickle your fancy. Passion, mystery, intrigue, and a sprinkle of blood play? Sign me up!! Grab this one asap, ladies. It’s a story you won’t want to miss!!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was such an enjoyable read. I felt like I was just along for the ride of the story and where it was going, it wasn't predictable or boring.

Starts out as super cute with the crush on your neighbor feelings, but it has some real life scare to it, which propels Jane into Samuels world. She's perfectly happy letting him take her away and keep her safe. Then it's all exploration and getting to know one another, then everything goes wrong and cliffhanger! I didn't throw my kindle or scream, but man I was shocked at the ending because I didn't see it ending like that!

Slow burn, but when it burns it's hot!

Favorite scene is when Jane and Samuel are in the elevator and she asks how his night of money laundering and fine whiskey went and he's completely confused. She explains that he never answered her question of what he does, so she just guessed mob. His response was '"I'm... sophisticated. Classy," he winks at me, causing the ripple of butterflies to start all over again. "But not in the mob."

Warning, there is bl**d play, this is an 18+ book with adult themes and scenes.

This book had so much potential, but just ended up being terrible. The whole storyline is completely rushed. There are no substantial conversations. The main female character is boring and such a cliché. The love interest doesn’t even make sense. Everything was so rushed. They know each other for literally like five days. I found myself thankful to be getting closer to the end so that I could just finish the book and move on.

My Neighbor, The Vampire de Brenna Harlow Serie Shadowing Jane libro 1

Argumento:

Su plan para escapar de la influencia de Night Order ahora está arruinado, y dado que ella ha sido testigo de su verdadera naturaleza, la vida de la chica está inevitablemente entrelazada con la de él. Con opciones limitadas, toma la única decisión posible;

My Neighbor, The Vampire is the first book in the Shadowing Jane series, and be forewarned, it ends on a cliffhanger! It is a paranormal romance featuring Jane Johnson and Samuel Gravenson.

Jane is a small town curvy girl who has fled to the city. She works the overnight shift as a barista for a neighborhood 24-hour coffee shop. The work isn't fantastic, but it is a job which allows her to pay for her apartment and remain in the city.

Samuel is a 194 year old vampire who has been summoned to the city by the Night Order. He doesn't want to be there, but one doesn't ignore an "invitation" from the Night Order. He finds temporary lodging in an apartment building... the same building as Jane.

Jane and Samuel meet in the elevator, and slowly become friendly. Jane finds him to be very attractive, and Samuel doesn't understand why he finds her, a human, to be so alluring. His interest isn't in a meal.

One night, Jane is attacked in her home, and Samuel comes barreling through the wall to her rescue. She discovers what he is, but for some reason isn't scared of him. Samuel feels the need to protect her at any cost, and rather than have her existence discovered by the Night Order, he whisks her away. The two aim to disappear together, with the assistance of his brothers, Matthew and Francis.

I enjoyed the dynamic between the main characters, and their chemistry. Samuel describes himself as a monster but is only ever gentle, loving and respectful towards her. He cherishes her as she is, drool and all. He wants to give her everything and ensure she has a full life. Jane is a demure woman who has mostly led a sheltered life, and suddenly has her life turned upside down. Over the book she seems to grow a little. She start to learn what she wants, and ask for it. As the story continues in the next book, I hope she continues to grow and become her own heroine.

This was a fun and easy read. It gave me Twilight vibes, with a lot of added spice. It will surely appeal to anyone who appreciates a praise kink.

I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I am eager to see what happens next with Jane and Samuel.

I hate the fact that every description about a lot of the entertainment for the past ten-plus years was "it's like Twilight." I liked Twilight but this saying was overused for things that are nowhere near similar. I kinda hate myself cause I gotta say it. My Neighbor the Vampire was the spicier adult version of Twilight minus the wolves (so far).

Jane was already living like a vampire as a barista on the night shift in NYC. Jane was pretty average a loner with a pension for cutesy stuff but a loner. She's also brave, after having decided she didn't like the life she was living before she decided to try something new on her. The one thing that did stand out about her was she was a lot less freaked out about the vampire thing than most mfc I've read about so go Jane.

It's when I get into mmc Samual "Sam" that the Twilight comparisons happen. The broody vampire who thinks himself a monster (his maker tried but didn't succeed), refuses to turn his girl, and there are ruling vampires who are harsh, to say the least. As for Sam, he is actually a pretty decent guy. He protected Jane when she needed it the most. Continuously takes care of Jane, considers her at every turn, and wants the world for her. There was instant attraction between them, a theory has been floated but not confirmed.

Brenna's vampire mythology is something along the lines of newer vampire lore, no burning in the sun but it does affect them, the bite is euphoric, and vampires are at times gorey. As for the story, there's a stalker, a close-knit group of brothers, and an ruling group of vampires who aren't to be trusted if you look to Lord Runes as an example. Plus there are rogue vampires, safe houses, evading techniques, and more.

So that ending... Brenna threw a shocking twist at the very end and I don't even know why I was surprised but I was. My Neighbor the Vampire was a great read. This is just the first book in the series, I'm looking forward to seeing where the story is gonna go next.

My Neighbor, the Vampire is the first book in Brenna Harlow’s all new The Shadowing Jane series. This book is told in dual POV and is Jane and Samuel’s story. Reader beware, this ends in a massive cliffhanger that will leave you wanting to throw your kindle! I absolutely love Brenna’s writing style. She writes vampire stories that don’t suck, and this book is no different. Think Twilight, but better.. and steamier. Plus, not only is this a fantastic vampire story, it’s a story about the vampire mafia! It’s like all my favorite dark and dirty tropes had lots of amazing babies! Samuel leads a lonely life after being turned. He’s broody and not one for vampire politics. Suddenly, he’s obsessed with this human neighbor, he doesn’t know why, and Jane’s appearance in his life makes him angry. It was so fun watching Samuel obsess over Jane, and obsess over WHY he’s obsessing over her. Jane is such a relatable and likable character, she still has this air of innocence, and she’s desperately trying to make a life for herself. When Samuel literally comes crashing into her life she doesn’t react how Samuel assumes she would. It was so much fun watching Jane continue to surprise him. Obviously, this is a paranormal romance, but the chemistry between these two is so realistic. I adore Samuel’s brothers and I hope we get their stories as well. I flew through this book. The plot is well developed, the storyline flows well, the characters are so easy to fall in love with, and the suspense is well done. If you are looking to sink your teeth into great PNR writing, Brenna is your girl! Definitely recommend this one!

“All I ask is that you keep being this tender with me, and I’ll be yours.” I close my eyes, breathing in his scent.
“Oh, my sweetness.” Sam presses his lips against mine, kissing me softly.
“You already are.”

For the fans of twilight, who didn't want to wait four books for some *~spice~*, Brenna's got you.

My Neighbor, The Vampire is about Jane & Samuel.

Samuel is a 194 year old vampire who just wants to live a different life than the one his former Lord, and his Lord's brother, have made him live.

Jane has wanted to live a different life than the one her parents wanted for her, free from the religious restrictions of her small hometown. However, it's left her alone and without much to her name.

Also, fine. I'll stop with the twilight gifs... for now...

This was a nice, relatively quick read, that gave me the things I wanted from the Twilight Saga but as an adult.

The only thing, as I always mention, that I didn't like? The friggin cliff hanger.

Samuel is summoned to New York by his Lord’s brother, Rune. Forced to stay a few nights in the city, he rents an apartment.
Jane, a waitress working the night shift in a café, lives in the apartment next to him. After meeting in an elevator, she fantasizes about her new neighbor, never suspecting him of being a vampire.
When a stalker from the café breaks into her apartment, Samuel saves her, revealing his true nature. Since he’s not willing to silence her for good, he takes her and flees the city, thus breaking all the rules.
Will they find happiness together? Or will his past catch up to them?

Brenna Harlow’s newest paranormal romance “My Neighbor, The Vampire” is one of my favorite books by this author. I enjoyed the premise of the story and the characters were interesting. Most of the tropes were exactly what I love in a good vampire romance, except for one: I don’t care for the supernatural pregnancy trope. (In my opinion, this trope has ruined many good PNR novels).
So, the ending of the book disappointed me, not just because of the cliffhanger.
Other than that, it was a well-written, enjoyable read with some spice.

I was so lucky to receive an ARC of this book from the author (thank you, Brenna!), I’ve wanted to read a good vampire book and this one definitely didn’t disappoint. I loved the world created by the author, it was really interesting and vampires were described in such a fascinating way. The plot was perfectly paced with a lot happening so I wasn’t bored for even a moment and slowing down in the right places so we could get to know the characters well. My favorite part was of course the romance. Samuel and Jane are perfect for each other, I could clearly see their attraction since their first meeting and I loved seeing their relationship progress, I would say it was a medium burn with some great spicy scenes and I can’t wait to see more of them in the next book. My Neighbor, The Vampire is a really fun and quick read with amazing romance, well-written characters and interesting plot that I really enjoyed and recommend to all paranormal romance readers.

This was a short, quick read that presents all the classic vampire romance tropes with some fun twists to keep things fresh. I really liked the heroine, Jane, and her bravery and practicality; the hero, Samuel, was more of a typical vampire assassin bad boy, so he wasn’t super interesting.

I wish the book had been a little longer: the beginning where the two main characters are just neighbors being a longer section I think would’ve have added some nice tension and made it more shocking to Jane when Samuel’s vampiric identity is revealed. As it is, that introduction seems too quick and Jane accepts news of vampires being real like it ain’t no thang. I think a little more buildup there could’ve served the story well.

Still, this is a fun supernatural romance read: it’s not breaking any molds but it’s enjoyable.

There is a giant cliffhanger tho, FYI.

Ah, dunno... I didn't really vibe with it. The dedication in the book had my hopes high ngl since I was a girlie that wished Twilight had a lil bit more smut, but dunno I guess I'm too old for this type of shallow characters Jane and Samuel are. I just couldn't connect with the lack of their intelligence and self-preservation.

I read lots of romance and by now I'm used to insta love but this one didn't do it for me. I just couldn't find it believable, I didn't feel the spark and connection between them. The smut was good, made me horny so it surved it's purpose.

I was interested in the story and how things will be playing out up until the unexpected pregnancy. Total mood killer. I saw it coming and wasn't surprised. However, I was still hoping the book won't go in that direction. Sadly, it did.

Saddened that I can't offer more hype for this book, but it simply wasn't my sort of a thing.

This is ok. Jane is a barista at a 24/7 cafe and after getting followed home by a man who assaulted her, her neighbor Samuel breaks through her wall to kill him. Once she knows he's a vampire with superhuman strength she has to flee because his "boss" will be pissed. Jane spends most/all of this book being scared at normal stuff and then totally ok with anything fucked up. Which normally I would be ok with if she wasn't such a risk taker. She willingly leaves town with a stranger without telling anyone and assumes it will be ok even when he smashes her phone. Also Samuel is like super convinced she should be pulling out the pitchforks and actively attempts to convince her to flee. This book just did not interest me enough with the mediocre plot, smut, and development to read an entire second book.

3.5 rounded to 4

A lot of this gave me Twilight vibes. Was that just me? And I'm not saying that disparagingly! I'm a forever Twihard.

I was definitely intrigued by the story and loved their initial interactions. Particularly the things he may have heard through the walls. Although once they arrived at the cabin it was a smidge too instalust for me and they seemed to jump into the "I'm all in on you" in the blink of an eye. But I'm curious how it'll all play out. I'm hoping for more background on Samuel but I'm sure more will be revealed in the next book.

Who doesn’t want a mysterious, brooding vampire to move in to the apartment next door? It’s probably a little awkward when the new neighbor’s ultra-sensitive ears can hear you moaning his name on your self care days but it’s convenient when it saves your life from a creepy intruder.

Samuel is ordered to stay in the city and blend in with humans by the leader of the Night Order. It turns out to not be so bad after being drawn to his new human neighbor, Jane. After circumstances lead to him revealing himself to a human, Samuel is forced to make a choice which is to protect Jane from the Night Order and take her on the run.

I was pleasantly surprised with Brenna Harlow’s writing style in this one. The pacing and plot drew me in and I felt intrigued throughout the story.

There were a lot of great ideas with good tension but I felt like the characters and backstory needed to be a little bit fleshed out. I felt lost in the beginning and thought that maybe I was missing the previous book of the series but My Neighbor, The Vampire is book one. I think the Night Order and Samuel’s relationship with it needed more background, which would make the ending pack a bigger punch. This was also a little too insta-lovey for my personal taste.

I’m interested in trying something else from this author because the writing really worked for me and I felt like I was flying through the book.

I was sent this ARC for an honest review. My Neighbor, The Vampire is available now.

Jane’s life change when she meets her new neighbor Samuel. He is very old vampire who only in because his maker’s( who he killed) call him to work. But he feel possessive over her and when she gets attacked in her home, he save her and reveal himself in the process. Since human aren’t supposed to know about them, they both are in trouble and on the run. Join by his “brothers” they hide and give in to their feelings. Even though this is an amazing journey be prepared for a huge cliffhanger. I for one can’t wait for the next book.

Okay so this book has so many twists! I loved the chemistry between the two main characters, and the FMC internal monologue was hilarious I loved her. The ending had me on the edge of my seat sweating! Now gunna lie I almost threw my phone lol but it’s a great book I’m going to be counting down the days till book two comes out.
Spice I was would say 2.5 outa 5 still a great read though.

I need part 2 asap!!

First, let me say I was honestly a little confused when I started reading this but I didn't want to give up because I love a good vampire book. So, I started over from the beginning and it's good. That ending almost took me out. I need to know if Sam knew and that why he didn't want to ... hmmm... because Mr. Asshole knew after one bite. Patiently impatiently waiting for book two.

It’s such a good book!!! I’m here giggling, kicking my feet and blushing so much! Only thing that is making me almost not wanna get the second book is the fact she is pregnant, nothing more I hate than pregnancy shit in book! Hate hate hate, I’m scared she’s gonna give birth. Nothing sexy about pregnancy😩 so tempted to just leave it at book 1 and finish it with a happy ending in my head WITHOUT pregnancy and children👀

We get a whole mafia vampire story in this book with mich more to come. Samuel is a vampire that wants out and is playing human but Jane taunts him and we she has a break in and learns what he is he thinks its best to go on the run to protect her. This book gives a developing relationship and action throughout.

I loveeeed this book! It gives the Twilight movie vibes but in the adult more mature version, the storyline is super engaging, the characters are fantastic, specially the FMC who is adorable and sassy. Also the writing was absolutely flawless.

This is the beginning of a new series and the only thing I hated was that cliffhanger, because I wanted to keep reading, I mean, it wasn't enough to satiate my vampire books addiction.

I can't wait for the next book! and if you love vampire stories this series is for you!

This book was good, very fast paced and has lots of action. I enjoyed the characters and loved the story. The spice was good as well a 2🌶️ and sam is a very verbal dirty talker. Would recommend this book if you love vampires and spice. It ended on a cliffhanger so we will see what happens in the second book
