Cas Strickland. Arrogant billionaire. Walking PR nightmare. And my new fake boyfriend.
When the opportunity to fix Cas’ image lands on my desk, I can't say no. Literally. It's that, or lose my business.
Cas isn't just my new, sharp-tongued boss. We have history. One that includes the hottest hookup of my life, and ends with me completely humiliated.
Working side-by-side with the jerk who's been my nightmare and my fantasy for the past ten years? I can handle that. At least until he maneuvers me into being his fake girlfriend.
Passion has always burned between us, but now it threatens to consume me. The longer the ruse goes on, the more the real Cas — and the real me — come to the surface. And the real versions of us fit together in ways I’ve never fit with anyone else.
Love isn’t part of my plans, and falling for Cas might derail the fresh start I desperately need. But every day with Cas makes him harder and harder to give up.
A fun read that gets your pulse racing. Not the most original plot but it doesn't really matter as it's easy to connect with the characters who make you want to keep reading.
This book is my first experience with author, Vivian August, and A Billionaire to Hate was an excellent place to start. Ms. August utilized several familiar tropes in crafting her narrative but brings an appealing freshness to this angsty romance story. Cas and Gia were briefly acquainted in college and even worked together on an important class project; the final grade for their joint project was less than stellar and Cas blamed Gia. Needless to say, they departed ways with extreme acrimony. Fast forward a decade and Cas has found great success in the field of investments. Unfortunately, his brusque manner and poor social interactions find him in need of help from the last public relations expert he would want to work with: GIA! I loved this story and found both main characters to be authentic and relatable. They made an awesome couple…somewhat flawed but complete together. In addition, Ms. August created stellar secondary characters that I hope we get to read about again. https://theretiredreader.com/f/a-bill...
In the delightful pages of "A Billionaire to Hate" by Vivian August, published by the author herself on August 5th, 2023, readers are invited to step into a world of PR ploys, unresolved history, and sizzling chemistry. This romantic tale, discovered through BookSirens, explores the realms of business, attraction, and personal growth, presenting a narrative that keeps the heart engaged and emotions on edge.
First and foremost, a gracious nod to both BookSirens and Vivian August for granting readers the privilege to be part of the ARC reader team for "A Billionaire to Hate." This delightful opportunity allowed for a glimpse into the world of Cas Strickland and his intricately woven relationship with a protagonist who is more than meets the eye.
Vivian August weaves a story that navigates seamlessly between the lines of hate and attraction, providing the perfect playground for the sparks to fly. The push and pull between Cas and the protagonist set the stage for a tale full of delightful tension and simmering temptations. The transformation from foes to fake partners gives the narrative an engaging edge, keeping readers guessing about the outcome of their rollercoaster journey.
While "A Billionaire to Hate" masterfully stokes the fires of passion and attraction, it also delves into the characters' growth and transformation. The narrative artfully navigates the balance between love's unexpected arrival and the characters' personal aspirations, creating a backdrop of internal conflict that enhances the stakes.
However, while the story adeptly captures the push and pull of emotions, there were moments where pacing felt a tad uneven, and some character motivations might benefit from further exploration.
In conclusion, "A Billionaire to Hate" stands as a testament to Vivian August's ability to craft an engaging, emotionally charged romance. It is a story that thrives on its characters' complexity, their sizzling chemistry, and the journeys they undertake, both together and individually. This book captures the essence of love's unpredictability and the choices we make when confronted with its tantalizing allure. If you're seeking a story that blends tension, attraction, and personal growth, "A Billionaire to Hate" offers an enticing ride worth embarking upon.
This review is for "A Billionaire to Hate" and may contain minor spoilers in terms of underlying tropes/themes. If you’ve already read the blurb, there shouldn’t be any spoilers. This story is told in first person present tense with dual points of view. It is novel-length. I didn't find many spelling/grammatical errors to pull me out of the story. This is a modern romance with good character development and relationship growth. This story had a few of my favorite tropes: enemies to lovers, forced proximity, and fake relationship. It managed to be both quite spicy and also a slow burn; I really enjoyed the dichotomy and the reality of conflicting feelings, desires, and actions. The pace of the romance, both physical and emotional, is lovely. The characters grow pragmatically from enemies to respectful and friendly to lovers. I found the main characters to be very likable. The characters are well-rounded, flawed, interesting, and honest. The self-introspection for each main character gives good insight to the audience, so that we can understand the fears and motivations of each. The side characters add value and depth, and are themselves flawed, realistic, and fun. The billionaire aspect was a lesser plot point, never gratuitous or silly. Both main characters have resources, which may have toned down the shock value of being fabulously wealthy. I’m not a big fan of implausible and unrelatable plot devices, so the subtle use of wealth to improve lives was much appreciated. The use of pets was also a refreshing plot point, and maybe didn’t add a lot to the plot, but definitely added to the richness of multiple characterizations. Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and I give it a solid 4-4.5 stars. The characters and relationship-building are nicely nuanced and not static, the plot feels plausible and reasonably paced, and the writing style is very pleasant and easy to read. I devoured it in a day, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who likes modern romance with some steamy scenes.

on one hand, the contemporary enemies to lovers set up was great. contemporary romances will say they’re enemies to lovers, but really they just slightly dislike each other because they thought they were both entitled to the same seat in the conference room, or actually one of them has been in love with the other the entire time. this is not to say those set ups aren’t great bc i still fuck with them, but they’re not REALLY enemies, are they?? on the other hand, you can’t look too closely at the most underlying reasons for the continued hatred because it all starts to fall apart.
so gia and cas were class partners in college and they almost failed their class because of gia, who had family issues at the time, but didn’t convey them bc of ~reasons~ (actually fairly legitimate reasons). failing this class was the final nail in the coffin bc cas lost his scholarship and had to drop out. but don’t worry, ladies!! he’s a billionaire now!! but he still hates gia bc he’s holding onto that anger of having to drop out of school. spoiler alert: it’s bc of his dad (less legitimate reasons). it just seemed really far fetched because the dad was a one dimensional stereotype, where he had kicked his son out of the house and disowned him in high school and told him he would never amount to anything because he wouldn’t be able to graduate college. and they continue on with this narrative for the next 10 years. 10!!
the ‘enemies’ -> fake dating (to continue helping each other professionally, as you do) -> lovers was ... fun, but the speed in which they got back together after the 3rd act breakup was (and i did not think i would ever say this) too fast?? and i don’t mean just time wise. it was literally resolved in the span of a paragraph. i thought i missed a page. i’d just like to see a smidge more rumination!!

So, I really enjoyed this book! From the blurb, I'd expected that presentation; which were characters hating each other for past wrongs, then coming together and all was right with the world. Yes, there was that, but then so much more. With Cas and Gia unexpectedly back each other's lives for professional reasons, they really had a chance to work through some stuff. In the beginning, neither one willing to give the other a break until they absolutely had to, while fighting an attraction that wasn't appreciated on either side.
The genuine way both called the other out; while petty at first, offered true credibility to the deeper relationship and feelings that developed later on. Each made the other think about who they were as individuals, their motives concerning how they lived their lives, and who they allowed into their spaces; be it family, friend or business. It was a constant give and take between them in this manner. No shortcuts with them.
All the secondary characters were a bonus. An eclectic bunch that just added to the overall story. I will say that the relationship between Cas and his father needed a bit more fleshing out. I really wanted more time with that.
In the end, the reader gets the payoff, and it was just a really satisfying read.

This was my first opportunity to read something by this author and it won't be my last. The story is told in dual points of view. I always enjoy getting both characters' perspectives. The story has one of my favorite tropes, fake relationship, along with enemies to lovers and forced proximity. Gia and Cas have a history of an unforgettable hook-up, but it didn't end well for Gia. Now they are unexpectedly back in each others' lives and not only do they have to interact, but they have to pretend to be in a fake relationship. Cas has had some public relations issues, and Gia is the one who will be helping him to fix it, and that involves them pretending to be together. Gia was a great character. Despite the history between them, Gia was determined to be kind to Cas, who comes off as arrogant and full of himself. I like seeing the change and growth in Cas as they spent time together and also the way he helped Gia improve her self-esteem. The story was well-written and held my interest from start to finish. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. They had great chemistry and I enjoyed following their story. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.

Great enemies-to lovers story. I loved the fact that Gia & Cas’ enmity dates back ten years before the story starts, and that she is his only hope for repairing his and his company’s image after he is caught on camera praising a now disgraced business associate. Gia is a great character – determined to ‘kill’ her enemy with kindness and (figuratively) drag him kicking and screaming around to her point of view! Cas starts off the story as an arrogant, workaholic businessman, but I really liked the way he changes under Gia’s influence as the story develops. Gia has her own insecurities – which Cas takes the edges off and improves her self-esteem. I particularly the scene towards the end of the book where she encounters her ex & former best friend at an event and almost verbally ‘flips’ them off! A really good, steamy read.
A well written enemies to lover's romance told in dual point of view. Good storyline with easy flow. Loved these main characters - Cas and Gia. Cas starts off as an arrogant, workaholic who finds himself in a bind that only Gia can pull him and his company out of...Gia is determined to kill him with kindness - or just plain kill em - either will work, but she's struggling with her own issues. These two have a chemistry that is undeniable and as things heat up between them their hearts inevitably get involved...Great characters and I'm certainly looking forward to more from August!

This book has been such a wondrous staycation read. From start to finish, you are given a guided tour into the life and love of Gia and Cas.
The chemistry between Gia and Cas is a roller coaster ride, and it’s definitely a ride worthy of taking.

This was a well written story and had great characters! The storyline was very well executed and entertaining! Cas and Gia are unexpectedly back in each other's lives for professional reasons and can’t stand each other! They have some serious issues to work through just to be able to coexist professionally! Add to the fact that they’re both fighting an attraction to each other but neither one appreciates those feelings!.

I love a good enemies to lovers romance and this is one in my opinion. Cas and Gia were briefly acquainted in college as they worked together on an important class project, but the final grade for the joint project wasn’t what they hoped for and he blamed her for it, so they depart ways with extreme acrimony. Fast forward a few years his poor social interactions find him in need of help from a public relations expert Gia. I loved this story.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. I love these story. I couldn't put the book down. Great characters that will pull you into their story. Cas and Gia have strong personalities, great chemistry but some emotional baggage too. This story has drama, heart, hope, love, and forgiveness. The story flowed effortlessly with a few twists and turns that will keep you glued from start to finish.
This is the first time I am reading this author, This was a good enemies to lovers story. Cas and Gia were briefly acquainted in college when they worked together on an important class project, but the final grade for the joint project wasn’t what they hoped for and he blamed her for it, and these two departed on a bad note. Fast forward a few years they two meet again and Cas needs Gia's help. Over all it was an entertaining read. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
This was a good read. The story was entertaining and kept my attention. I enjoyed getting to know Cas, Gia, and Ellie. The other characters were also interesting so I’m looking forward to seeing more of them.
Side note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review
Gia is trying to save her business on her own when opportunity knocks. Cas needs PR to mend his reputation before his company takes the hit. Will Cas let Gia do her thing and save them both or will he hold the grudge forever? A good read.
Prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of emotions as you dive into "A Billionaire to Hate" by Vivian August. With a first-person present tense narrative and a dual POV, this novel immediately grips you, immersing you in the characters' minds.
August's storytelling is not without its flaws, though. Inconsistencies in the timeline can sometimes distract from the overall flow. For instance, a slip where ages don't quite match up can temporarily yank you out of the story's magic. However, despite these occasional blips, the narrative structure contributes to the overall engagement, keeping you invested in the characters' journey.
While the book excels in depicting the chemistry between the protagonists, Gia and Cas, it falls short in delivering detailed descriptions of the setting. Rather than relying on ambient sounds, settings, etc., August could have more effectively painted the scenes with vibrant detail, allowing readers to better visualize the world the characters inhabit.
The character development and emotional depth occasionally take a backseat to physical interactions. The love scenes, while explicit, lack the emotional intensity that could make them truly electrifying. And though the male lead's appreciation for the female lead's beauty is commendable for breaking stereotypes, the connection between them often seems confined to the physical realm.
One of the highlights is the hilarious presence of Cas's dog Ellie, adding moments of levity to balance the narrative's intensity. Furthermore, August's portrayal of Gia as an intelligent, articulate, and stunning dark-skinned woman is a refreshing departure from clichéd stereotypes often seen in interracial romances.
The book's title sets up expectations for an enemies-to-lovers tale filled with fiery animosity, but the "hate" aspect is underplayed. The lack of a significant climax or turning point hampers the story's ability to fully captivate the reader. Despite the length, the narrative merely skims the surface of its promising themes and character dynamics.
August does succeed in offering both perspectives, allowing you to see the story from both Gia and Cas's viewpoints. However, the lack of a deep, emotional connection between them beyond their physical attraction makes their love story feel somewhat shallow and short-lived.
In conclusion, "A Billionaire to Hate" has its strengths and weaknesses. It captures your attention with engaging storytelling, vivid character portrayals, and humorous moments, but it leaves some of its potential unexplored. If you're seeking a love story that delves deeper into its themes and characters, you might find this one falling just short of the mark. Nevertheless, Vivian August deserves praise for her attempts to break stereotypes and for the glimpses of brilliance that shine through her narrative.

I love good enemies to lovers. And Cas and Gia were definitely enemies to start.
Cas misspoke about a situation after oversleeping and now his entire company is under pressure not to lose any clients due to this misstep. And one of his friends knows who to call to help fix the situation. Too bad Cas and Gia have a past. One they don't seem to have gotten past.
But Gia shows Cas that she really is looking out for him and his company and is not out for revenge. Which is great when Cas lets others assume they're in a relationship together. And all goes well and things heat up between these two. But when the big day comes and everything goes as planned, where does that leave Cas and Gia?
Gia and Cas get their happy ending in this standalone book.
I love that it was such a simple misunderstanding back in college that could have easily been fixed at the time. However, I loved that they wouldn't play the 'what if' game, and everyone pointed out that Cas may not be there today if it wasn't for that class. And that they were genuine with each other and not trying to be fake. I do wonder what Gia's parents thought of Cas and if he ever reconciled with his father, or just enjoyed proving him wrong about their relationship.
