The story plot, suspense, and serial killer didn’t quite captivate my interest as those that did in books #1 and 2, but nonetheless I still enjoyed the mystery and the company of FBI Special Agents Faith Bold, Michael Prince, and the K-9 Turk.
This time they are looking for a serial killer who kills and takes wedding rings as trophies. Victims could be male or female. Faith is struggling with her PSTD and keeps thinking about the copy cat Donkey Killer; she wants to catch him so bad, but she is forbidden to touch the case.
This wedding ring serial killer mystery is finally solved after many mistakes being made, but she can’t forget about the copycat Donkey Killer being out there! Onto to book #4!
Faith is struggling to get her own life on track, she wants to be hunting for the copy cat killer of the Donkey Killer but she was not allowed to be on that team. She's struggling with that, and also with her relationship with a new boyfriend. Her personal life in on hold and she needs to go to therapy (as her boss wants). She and Michael are searching for a killer who takes his victims' wedding rings as mementos. The ase has a lot of twists and turns before the duo is finally able to get the culprit. Good plot, well-written, and entertaining!
This was my car and out shopping book for the week and it also was a make or break book for me in regards if I keep reading the series. Sadly this will be the last one for me. I was bored while reading, the only truly interesting character for me is Turk, sort of wished we would get part of the story from his point of view. Faith and Michael have so many issues, of their own, some of them as a team. It seems like they go down one path to find the killer, commit 100%, then find out they are wrong and it's all...oh well...we'll get him, then do it at least 1 or 2 more times before landing on the right killer. This series just isn't for me, not enough to keep me reading.
So Scared is book three in the Faith Bold series by Blake Pierce. FBI Special Agent Faith Bold caught another case in Tucson, Arizona, of a killer who kept wedding rings from their victims. At first, FBI Special Agent Faith Bold and her partner, FBI Special Agent Michael Prince, could not work out how the killer decided on their victim because they were all different. Will Faith and Michael find the killer before they strikes again? Readers of So Scared will continue to follow the investigation of FBI Special Agent Faith Bold and her partner, FBI Special Agent Michael Prince, as they work to uncover the truth.
So Scared is another fantastic addition to this excellent series by Blake Pierce. I discovered this series by accident and am delighted that I did. I enjoy Blake Pierce's writing style, particularly how he portrays his characters and their interactions with each other throughout this book. I also like the way Blake Pierce highlights the use of dogs for law enforcement officers who are suffering from PTSD. Reading this book, I learned the difference between serial and spree killers. So Scared is well-written and researched by Blake Pierce. I like Blake Pierce's description of So Scared's settings, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
I sort of rely on listening to non-taxing audio books as a relaxation from the stress of my work days. This series is interesting and really non-taxing. The challenge with the audio books is that there is a British reader. I don't mind, in fact, I love the accent. But especially with things like mispronouncing Tucson, or other cities and other U.S. specific words, people offering tea to officers instead of coffee, I get distracted from the story on occasion. Not enough to stop reading the books, but it is a distraction. It makes me wonder how much research the writer has done on things like certain legal aspects of the stories that seem a little off, counting Missouri (in book 2) as part of the Bible belt. I suppose that is technically true, but I've never encountered someone in the states that looks at it that way. I think the author has talent, but I wonder if he was writing for a British-specific audience - which is valid.
The story is a solid 3.5-4.5 star book. This is true for the entire series.
But it gets an automatic one start for using an AI audio narrator instead of getting an actual narrator to save money or whatever. There are tons and tons of narrators out there who are just starting, good and don’t need a paycheck for their work. Many work off audiobook sales or even credits (I know from experience with said narrators.)
AI “art” is lazy and a theft of real people creating art.
OK, I can ignore the fact that the narrator uses a British accent for no reason. But I cannot ignore the fact that the narrator mispronounces Tucson the ENTIRE book. C’mon. There’s no excuse for that. It’s “TOO-sawn” not “TUCK-sun.” Why, why, why didn’t anyone catch that??? Perhaps, having grown up in Tucson, it bugs me more than the average person. 🤷♀️
I've read over 25 of Blake Pierce's books. Although I loved the actual hunt for the serial killer in this book, I found Faith's angst to be far too tedious. I don't know why author's create these types of "superwomen" who lament every perceived flaw as a deficit. For example, Faith was kidnapped by a serial killer in an earlier book and she continues to lament the fact that her partner, Michael, saved her from captivity ... she thought she should've been able to escape herself (even though the tendons in her legs were slashed by her captor)! Get some therapy (which she has delayed getting - for what reason, I have no idea) and move on!
Getting hooked on this series, each book seems better than the previous book. The main characters very competent FBI agents but very flawed, even Turk the dog seems to be broken. The plot is well executed and the pages just fly by.
Always here for the pup. Enjoyed the psychological process of denial, acceptance that she needed help, and the realization that it was affecting her job.

This series is awesome. It has everything a reader expects, suspense, adventure and even some humour. Blake does an a great job keeping his readers interested.
