The Adventures of Space Duck

Rate this book
Space Duck and his associate Robot (a robot named Robot) stumble through a series of adventures in this collection of five short stories and novella. The year is 2615 and the solar system is packed with alien races, murderous AIs and a Martian Princess who needs to be rescued (too bad they sent Space Duck to perform the rescue).

Space Duck is a part time adventurer and full time pretty criminal who was created in a lab to survive in the airless conditions of outer space. Working with him is the free thinking robot, Robot, who craves adventure while acting as a voice of reason in Space Duck's throughly unreasonable existence.

Together they do their best to survive in a universe that is funny, heartfelt and occasionally just absurd.

About the author

Dan Goodsell

Dan grew up in Orange County, CA on a steady stream of comics and cartoons and Godzilla movies. He studied studio art at UCI.

In 2003, he started a Mr Toast webcomic which led to making real comics with Todd Webb, making toys and producing the Mr Toast Game with Hasbro.

For the last couple years, he has been writing a series of connected short stories about the unlikely character Space Duck. The stories are pulpy and funny and hopefully have a little heart in there too.

I won this book in a goodreads drawing.

Space duck is the result of a genetic experiment. Instead of some sort of super soldier, they got...Space Duck. Space Duck is a bottom dwelling adventurer, taking jobs nobody else will take, getting by on the skin of his teeth, and the help of his trusty robot.

Why do ducks make such great characters?

Space Duck and Robot - what a great set of short stories by Dan Goodsell. I will eagerly read more by the author, hopefully which contain Space Duck and Robot. The narrative style had me outright laughing many times. Joyful, irreverent, fun, very creative, with homages to past scifi pulp.

Each of the separate shorts can be read in any order, which each bring a unique spin on Space Duck, Robot, their adventures - the individuals met along the way. The worldbuilding nuggets are dropped in at the right times and spaces.

My ranking of the 5 stories (most to least but they are all gems)

3,2,4,1,5

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you to the author, publisher, and book sirens.

Who knew I’d ever feel like I had a couple of friends who could be described as a 6 foot tall green duck and an expressionless robot sidekick??

When I first began my descent into this little book— I really had no clue what to expect or what would come of it. I very surely did not expect to meet a new fave book.

But here we are.
That is just scraping the surface of the enlightenment this book has granted me. A peek into an alternate universe of sorts, one that makes you feel upside down, and right side up all at the same time. [[if you’ve explored even the first chapter of it, I think you’d get what I mean]]

But one of the most surreal realizations Space Duck and Robot have given to me is that….
wait for it….
there were once——

T A N m&m’s. 🤯

I know. Earth shattering. Amiright?
[[the superior m&m, tbh, you’ll believe so too if you get this book right now and go searching for the pot of gold at the end of this metaphorical rainbow universe]]

But here I am rambling again.

If you’ve gotten this far——you’re awesome and you need this awesome book in your tbr and then your read pile.
You deserve it.
Think of it as a little treat to yourself.

Because what isn’t positive about reading a book full of fun musings of a 6 foot tall genetically engineered green duck and a nerdy((but also sentimental)) robot??

The answer is nothing. I’ll save you the pondering, friend.

“Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me”

Thank you to BookSirens for this ARC. You’ve done it again with another stunner. ✨
