(For transparency's sake, I was sent a copy of this book by the author, Lex Young, in exchange for my honest review-thank you!)
“You will live a long life that many seek, yet a long life many will have sympathy for.”
Valarie Garcia has no idea who said these words but they cling to the fading pieces of her subconscious like a ghost. Her double life is a chaotic mysterious one-by night, she works for a small Floridian police department, dealing with the racism that the color of her skin brings her and those around her. By day, she sleeps in her light-proofed house since she's a member of another ostracized community viewed as dangerous and unwanted.
But when she takes an assignment to "help" (read: deal with) a small group of vampires escape from their hideout near the town's edge, more of the hard-to-mentally-reach parts of her past start becoming more and more important-not just for the young families she trying to help, but for herself and her own hidden identity.
This was a very unique take on a very overdone horror subgenre-everywhere you turn, you're gonna find vampires, which isn't surprising since vampires are an OG monster of horror and legend. I was really surprised at the freshness of this take. The author is British, which can be felt a touch in some of the dialogue or feel but not enough to disrupt much from the story.
This is the first in a multi-part series that will, according to the author, touch on a new type of monster in a connected universe. I'm very excited to see the rest of the woven pieces of this story all come together into one big picture. This book is short but I read it very quickly because of how much I enjoyed the story that was being told.
If you're looking for a fresh take on the familiar and the start of a multipart connected story, I'd absolutely suggest picking this indie novella up.
