"Come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs."
That line, from one of many quotable moments from Die Hard, was an on the spot insertion during filming by actor Bruce Willis and director John McTiernan. That's just one of numerous ad lib or almost accidental elements added to the film which make it such a memorable modern classic.
When Die Hard premiered in July 1988 John McClane didn't just become a fly in Hans Gruber's ointment, he heralded in a new era of action movies, inspired countless knock-off action movies best described as "Die Hard in a" or "Die Hard on a" copycats, and created a franchise that spanned five decades (if you include the 2020 DieHard battery commercial). Even thirty-five years later it continues to inspire heated annual debates regarding the film's status as a Christmas movie.
This guide, lovingly researched by a die-hard (pun completely intended) fan of the 1988 action-adventure blockbuster collects trivia, behind-the-scenes stories of the movie, the script, the actors, and the books and other written material that Die Hard and several of the follow-on films in the franchise were based on or inspired by. The foreword was written by "Sweary Historian" James Fell, author of On This Day in History, Sh*t Went Down.
If you're a fan of Die Hard, then you're going to love Yippee Ki-Yay, Motherf*cker! Welcome to the party, pal!

When he's not enjoying craft beer or playing around with his three given names, he can usually be found wandering, awestruck through bookstores or libraries.
Yippee Ki-Yay Motherf*cker: A Trivial Guide to Die-Hard by Mark Leslie is a delightful tribute to the action-packed Die-Hard franchise. As a die-hard (pun intended) fan of the series, I thoroughly enjoyed diving into the trivia, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and analysis Leslie provides in this captivating book. The author's writing style is engaging and easy to follow. He showcases his passion for the Die-Hard movies through his humorous narration. He possesses a deep understanding and appreciation for the franchise, making this book a perfect companion for any Die-Hard enthusiast.
One of the book's positive aspects is its comprehensive exploration of each Die-Hard film. Leslie takes readers on a journey through the movies, providing accounts of the plot, character development, and memorable scenes. I particularly enjoyed his analysis of the iconic character John McClane, played by the legendary Bruce Willis. He delves into McClane's evolution, depicting the character's journey from an everyday cop to an exceptional action hero.
Apart from an insightful exploration of the main films, the book also includes informative trivia sections that are sure to intrigue even the most avid Die-Hard fans. Leslie delves into lesser-known facts, discussing casting choices, production stories, and interesting tidbits about the making of the films. These trivia sections add an additional layer to the reading experience, making it entertaining and educational. There were also some reviews about the works, which showcased what readers thought about them. Furthermore, the book is filled with vivid descriptions and colorful imagery that transport readers to the intense and exhilarating world of Die Hard. Leslie's ability to convey the heart-pounding action sequences and the high stakes of each film is commendable.
If I have one minor criticism, it would be that the book occasionally dwells too much on the first film, "Die Hard," potentially leaving fans wanting more in-depth discussions about the later installments. However, this is a minor issue compared to the book's overall content and quality.
I'll rate Yippee Ki-Yay Motherf*cker: A Trivial Guide to Die-Hard 5 out of 5 stars because it is the ultimate companion for any Die-Hard fan. Leslie's passion and knowledge shine through in this meticulously researched and highly readable book. Whether you're a casual viewer or an aficionado, this guide will undoubtedly enhance your appreciation and understanding of the Die-Hard franchise. So grab a copy, sit back, and prepare to relive the thrills of McClane's adventures!
This was a fun and engaging trivia guide to one of the most iconic action films (and let’s face it, Christmas films) of all time. The author does a great job of presenting the history of this film and the events that occurred before, during, and after the film’s release to help inspire a cultural phenomenon. From the historical background of the terrorist groups who helped inspire Hans Gruber’s own criminal organization, to the creation of some of cinema’s most beloved quotable moments in the film, this book had a bit of everything.
The thing that stood out the most was the overwhelming sense of nostalgia this guide had as it dived deeper and deeper into the film. The way the author was able to analyze and detail the ways in which both hero John McClane and antagonist Hans Gruber made themselves into such iconic characters in the genre, from the actor’s performances to who they represented in the culture at the time, made this book feel so alive and vibrant on the page, and invigorating to get lost in this film’s complete history.
The Verdict
Thrilling, engaging, and mesmerizing, author Mark Leslie’s “Yippee Ki-Yay, Motherf*cker!: A Trivia Guide to Die Hard” is a must-read guide and trivia book that you won’t want to miss. The heartfelt love for this film and the nostalgia that the author infuses into each chapter will bring readers back time and time again to get lost in this iconic action film's history.
Yippee Ki-yay: A Trivia Guide to Die Hard by Mark Leslie. This book, as indicated by its title, is a tribute to the Die Hard movie franchise, and I will advise readers to watch the movie to better appreciate this book. This book felt like I was listening to a commentary on this franchise, like what you will get on YouTube, but this is not a video but a book, and that makes it so awesome because the author was able to nail the flow and tone of any great movie commentary video. And that means you get to play out the scenes in the movie while reading here.
This book includes an explanation of the franchise, a novel adaptation of the book “Nothing Lasts Forever,” and a detailed review of the author of this book. It includes a top review of the franchise, a bibliography of the book, and the difference between the movie and its novel adaptation. It also talks about the influence of this franchise on history, culture, and the media. It also has a detailed description of each character’s role and personality, how the name Die Hard came about, and why it is a Christmas movie. Also, it includes catch phrases, one-liners, and quips, a detailed list of the soundtrack and length of each, and some mistakes and omissions that were noticed by fans. I love that the author includes links to articles and sources for his words. It shows the validity of all that is in this book. Die-hard fans will truly appreciate this book.
If your a huge fan of Die Hard like author Mark Leslie is then this is the trivia book for you. This book has it all - a definitive collection of quotes, behind the scenes anecdotes, an in-depth examination of the literary antecedents of the movie, and even soundtrack listings. In a day and age when virtually all of fandom and movie trivia exists on the internet its refreshing to be able to hold in your hands a well put together - dare I say old-fashioned - trivia guide. I was reserving my judgement on how thorough I thought Mark Leslie's guide was until I saw the one piece of trivia I was looking for - mention of stuntman Al Leong's scene where his character steals a candy bar while waiting for the action to begin. To have overlooked it would have been my own "Brown M&M" test of the book. Glad Mark and the book passed!
Mark's enthusiasm for Die Hard (and its sequels) shows in this book and probably not a spoiler alert but Mark is firmly on the side that Die Hard is indeed a Christmas Movie.
I found it a quick binge read and a book that I will probably revisit next time I need a good Die Hard nostalgia fix, but am too lazy to pull out my Die Hard collection on DVD.
Yippee Ki-Yay, MF is the book for Die Hard fans to grab. Packed with trivia anecdotes, and tons of information this book is a must read for those who enjoyed the cult classic from the '80s. John McClane immortalized many a line with the iconic movie Die Hard, as did villain Hans Gruber immortalize his character as one of the most recognizable villains. Readers who enjoyed the movie will not want to miss out on this book as the author goes into deep detail about the movie's origins from a book, how the screenplay almost wasn't, and how the soundtrack wasn't released until many a decade after the movie was originally released. Older fans will enjoy the nostalgia that this book brings while younger/newer fans of the movie will enjoy the depth of information and even the references to other books that help further cover and go into depth about one of Bruce Willis's most famous role as John McClane. This book is far from boring, even for readers who aren't fans of non-fiction novels. This book does repeat in some areas, but even rereading information you're already familiar with won't dim your enjoyment of this trivia guide.
Yippee Ki-Yay Motherf*ucker by Mark Leslie is the perfect read for fans of Die Hard! While I have never seen Die Hard films, I can testify that this book has what fans would like to feature about their favorite film. Humor, facts, and a deeper look into the topics are discussed like a pro. Mark Leslie is a talented writer. This book further proves his writing skills are exceptional. Test your knowledge of the films while diving far into the exploration of each of the films. This writer has done his research into the films and topics well. Every word adds to the wonderful experience for fans. Once you're done reading this book, it will make you want to re-view all the films and see them more thoroughly through the details listed in this book.
I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
If you are a fan of the Die Hard movies and I mean who isn't. Then this is the book for you. It is hard to believe that this movie is 35 plus years old, but when you read this book you know why it is a Christmas Classic just like "It's a Wonderful Life." This book will make you think about all the great moments of a great film. Now it isn't a highly technical book about how all the great scenes were staged, but more about how this movie has effected tons of viewers. Also why so many people watch it at Christmas as a tradition of the holiday.
This was a really fun read. I don't consider myself a huge Die Hard fan, but I have seen it several times and definitely enjoyed watching it with our children for the first time over the Christmas holidays, followed by the sequels. My favorite parts of this book were the trivia that didn't really fit into a chapter format, and the discussion of what the injuries would have meant in a real person. The author's love of the movie and franchise comes through and I'm looking forward to reading his Planes, Trains and Automobiles book.
