She is capable of managing everything . . . except for her heart.

Tasked with making a brilliant match for her cousin, Lavinia Harcourt whisks her entire household, including their two exotic pets, off to London for the Season. With limited funds and few connections, however, the undertaking is not easy. But Lavinia is nothing if not resourceful, and she comes up with a brilliant solution—one that involves her late father’s reminiscences, a forged letter, and an earl.

After years in London Society, Henry Kingston, the Earl of Carlton, has become jaded to those who would use him for his title and wealth. But when Miss Lavinia Harcourt is ushered into his study, bearing a letter that calls in a favor from his late father’s past, he finds himself obligated to help.

Despite his reluctance and her best intentions, Lavinia inadvertently manages to slowly entangle Lord Carlton in her family affairs, charming him with her frank and open manner along the way. By the time she realizes her own feelings for Carlton, however, she fears that the forged letter that initially brought them together may be the very thing that keeps them apart.

I’m sure I would read anything Ms, Kimball wrote, even if it was about caterpillars. She has such an excellent writing style, even this, short story as it was, was perfectly paced, funny and entertaining.

I so loved both main characters and the family 😍

For those of you that find reading reviews too long, here is the TDLR (too long, didn't read) version: BUY THIS BOOK ASAP!!!

While you're at it, add everything this author has ever written to your cart too.

Her books never cease to amaze me! I found this author last year and have quickly gobbled up everything she has written!

Okay, onto the review:

If you're looking for a book that will entertain you in every aspect. Get this book.
If you're looking for a book that will have THE BEST side characters (and pets). Get this book.
If you're looking for one of the best historical romances to be written. Get this book.
If you like characters who are imperfect, but extremely loveable and good. Get this book.
If you like characters who make you feel all of the feels. Get this book.

I laughed out loud so many times in this book. The family members were entertaining and so fun to read about (I'm crossing my fingers each one of them get their own book because I need more of the Harcourts in my life).

Here is an inside peek:

"You must heartily regret the day I was ushered into your study."

Carlton turned and looked at her, silver gaze unreadable. "I cannot say that I do" he mused aloud, almost as if he were surprised to hear himself admit such a thing. "Since we crossed paths, my life has been a good deal more..." He paused.

"Chaotic? Unbalanced? Rowdy?" she offered helpfully.

"Entertaining," he corrected.

Carlton takes this family in stride and I am telling you, you are going to love him. Carlton and Lavinia are ranking high on my all-time favorite fictional romance list. They are SO GOOD TOGETHER! I don't know what it is about reading characters who aren't looking for love, but then are "inconvenienced" with it, but I'm here for it.

I can't recommend this one enough. If you like historical romance with fun and engaging main and side characters I promise you you're going to love this one!

The Managing Miss by Heidi Kimball will be available April 19!!

It was mostly a 3.25 but it’s hard to imagine not being utterly charmed with this by the end, so there we are.

I only saw that it was written by Ms. Kimball and that the heroine was a mama bear older sister/manager extraordinaire, and I knew I would be reading. If you love Heyer’s Frederica as I do, well, this very-readable morsel would be irresistible. Thing is, I wish I would’ve known it was so resoundingly referential, maybe it would’ve initially irked me less. So it took me a minute to not be just listing all the striking similarities. And, even considering the shorter format and though charmingly funny, I gladly would have traded some of those chaotic sibling antics scenes that did not further our couple together, for more characterization or background on our self-centered bachelor earl.

NeverTheLess, this was good fun, some epistolary is always a welcome treat, and I was so happy with Miss Harcourt herself. The self-sacrificing, practical older sister at her best, and it’s always a thrill seeing her unexpected champion go on the offensive and woo like never before. I do love some well-intentioned deception/reveal drama and, for me, this was how to resolve it. The gestures were great, and we all breathe a sigh of relief knowing she’ll both manage him and let him be there to lean on for all future domestic pandemoniums. And more kisses and declarations than with Heyer, so there’s that.

I love these authors and, though the series has been up and down for me, such a fun premise, I would definitely say give it a try especially if you have KU!

Content notes: Kissing Only, heroine and siblings are orphans, brief unwanted advances.

“Somewhere along the way he had fallen in love with her. Completely gone. Over a managing miss, no less.”

Swoony romance, witty banter, delightful characters, familial chaos, an exotic parrot and a jewel stealing monkey make The Managing Miss a must read! This charming, sweet novella by Heidi Kimball completely pulled me in and I devoured it in one sitting. I fell in love with Henry, Lavinia, and her entire family. It’s a fun Regency romance that I definitely wanted more of and didn’t want to end.

Lavinia has had to take control of her chaotic family since the death of her parents. She creatively manages the household with her delightful personality and intelligent means. Her older cousin Oscar has been put in charge of their estate until her brother is older, but his gambling threatens to bankrupt them. Oscar makes a bargain with Lavinia to give her more control of their finances if she finds a brilliant match for his sister. Determined to find a solution, she forges a letter from her late father to his friend, the Earl of Carlton and arrives at his home to seek his help.

Henry, the new Earl of Carlton is tired of relations suddenly wanting favors from him. But, when a charming young woman arrives bearing a letter to his late father and needing his help, he can’t resist. Her household is nothing like his quiet estate, yet, as he gets to know Lavinia and sees the burdens she carries, he wants nothing more than to help her. But, can he convince her of his love and what happens when he finds out the letter was a forgery?

If you’re a fan of Regency romance, you’ll definitely want to pick this up. The antics of Lavinia’s family including the monkey Louie had me grinning and the romance between Lavinia and Henry was absolutely swoony. Highly recommend this funny, sweet, romantic novella. Though it’s part of a series, each book is meant to be read as a standalone. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are completely my own and voluntarily given.

I was so excited to read the final book in the Promise of Forever After series and it did not disappoint! Five school friends have promised to marry for love and now it's Lavinia's turn. Following the death of her parents, Lavinia has had to take on the role of caretaker to her younger siblings and cousins. She is very capable and is determined to handle everything, no matter what it takes. When she realizes that she will need help to find her cousin Marion a suitable husband, she decides that she must prevail upon her father's old friend, the Earl of Carlton, for assistance. When she arrives in London, she discovers that her father's friend has died, and the new heir is young, handsome, and has never heard of her family. However, the new Lord Carlton is willing to help and Lavinia reluctantly continues with her ruse.

Lord Carlton is bored with society and as he is thrust into the mayhem of the Harcourt family he handles thieving monkeys, dramatic young ladies, and complaining grandmothers with aplomb. He is intrigued by Lavinia and soon determines that he must figure out how to woo her. And he does! I very much related to Lavinia and her role as the caretaker for her family, and I absolutely loved how Henry appreciated her efforts and took care of her. Their romance was swoony and heartfelt and I loved every minute of it.

The story was inspired by Georgette Heyer's Frederica, but I felt like the side characters were a little more developed and I would love to see more books following this family! (Pretty please!) All of the humor was perfection. Five glowing stars! Thank you to the author for the ARC; all opinions are my own.

What's a little subterfuge and forgery anyway? It's not like Lavinia is hurting anyone when she descends on Lord Carlton's residence with a letter demanding an introduction to society. But Lord Carlton is dead and the new Lord Carlton is young and handsome and single.
While this novella is the conclusion of a multi-author project, it can be read as a standalone. Heidi's falls right in line with the others in terms of charm and likeability. Lavinia isn't my favorite of the five friends initially but I did enjoy and relate to her desire to care for her family while standing on her own two feet. The need to ask for help can be agonizing! I loved the hook and the ending were completely delightful.
Thank you to the author for the advanced copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

This is absolutely what I expected from a delightful novella by one of my favorite authors. It's sweet, funny, lighthearted, and a quick read. Heidi has such a wonderful way with words that puts me in the setting immediately, rooting for her characters. As the oldest of 4, I really related to Lavinia and her need to manage everyone and everything. Lavinia and Carlton's story is the perfect pick-me-up when you need to whisk yourself away to Regency England for a bit!

The Managing Miss is a wonderfully plotted and lovely novella from Heidi Kimball. It is part of the Promise of Forever After series of five friends who make a pack to marry for love. But Lavinia finds this hard years later as her responsibilities are many.

Lavinia is exceptional. Managing her abode (even the ill mannered parrot and monkey) in such a caring and concerning way is heartfelt. Then enters Henry. I don’t want to give too many details but what conspires was truly fun to read.

The scene when Henry stayed for tea and in enters Josephine, then everyone else had me laughing out loud. I read it a few times. The whole time Henry was at the house for tea that day was a riot and utterly hilarious.
I loved how the story moves along quickly and ending is perfect.

I absolutely adored this charming story!! I had a smile on my face pretty much the whole time I read it, and giggled too many times to count!! Lavinia was such a sweetie! She loved her little family and all their silliness and wanted so much to make sure they were happy!! She put her happiness aside for them!

And Henry was just a dream!! He was smitten with Lavinia from the first time he met her!! I loved their witty banter and teasing! (Swoon!) I just loved the scene where he first met her siblings! Tea time was always interesting with the Harcourt clan!! Henry’s interactions with her family were some of my favorite scenes!!

This was one book where I adored the side characters just as much as the two MC’s! Anytime Lavinia’s three siblings or grandmother were in a scene I was glued! Heidi wrote them so well that they felt like family to me! And it wouldn’t be complete without the parrot and monkey!!! They were both a hoot!

If you love a story filled with witty dialogue, swoony romance (that first kiss!!), mischievous animals, and family closeness then you don’t want to miss this little gem!! Read it as soon as you can!!

This is book 5 in The Promise of Forever After series, but can be read as a standalone!

I received an ARC copy from the author in exchange for my honest review! All thoughts are my own

If you’re looking for a short and sweet Regency romance to add to your TBR, The Managing Miss definitely fits the bill. This wasn’t my favorite story, but I did enjoy parts of it. I won’t go into detail here, but my thoughts can be summed up with this book wasn’t my cup of tea, but it’s still enjoyable overall and I’m sure others will like it more than I did. 3/5 stars

Great novella! My only complaint is that it wasn’t a full-length novel. Would have loved to spend more time with the Harcourt clan and Lord Carlton!

While this is the last in a multi-author series, it works well as a standalone.

What a fantastic quick read! To some extent regency romance novels are predictable (which is why we read them!) but this story was so well told and never left me with an urge to roll my eyes or skip through fluff filled chapters. It is full of amazing lovable characters and such a delightful storyline. I will definitely reread this from time to time!

This was such a sweet story! Exactly what I needed! Lavinia is the last of her group of friends to have the bracelet they have passed around that symbolizes their promise to marry only for love. Lavinia has too much to worry about with her parents gone and her siblings in her care. She forged a letter from her father asking for help from the Earl Carlton. Little does she know that the older Earl has passed away and his son is now the Earl. Anyway, this is very cute and light and just charming!

This charming novella is about Miss Lavinia Harcourt who's trying to make a match for her cousin while caring for her three younger siblings, who can be quite the handful, her grandmother and a couple of exotic pets. Using a little deception she manages to get Lord Carlton to help her and moves her entire family to London.

This was a delightful read with several hilarious scenes due to Lavinia's chaotic family. I don't know how she managed everything by herself after the death of her parents. I think I would've gone crazy. I liked how Lord Carlton (aka Henry) was taken in with Lavinia and her somewhat crazy family. I loved when the times that Henry helps Lavinia see she doesn't have to take care of everything herself and she deserves to have someone take care of her. So swoony!! This is a funny, sweet, romantic novella and although it’s part of a series, each book can be read as a standalone.

A wonderful story to end a fantastic series of related novellas. I loved this story! I’d give it an extra star if I could. For a novella length, this book really packed in the complete story with so much great detail and it summarized activity to move the story forward in just the right places. I like it when a novella can convey the activity and passage of time without making it feel rushed or like too much detail is missing. Georgette Heyer fans will recognize some definite Frederica vibes, and that book must have served as an inspiration, but the story also diverged significantly. To me, Henry was a more likeable, rounded, and less jaded male main character than Heyer’s Alverstoke. Lavinia was a young woman with a naturally managing disposition, accentuated by the responsibilities that had landed on her shoulders. Both Lavinia and Henry were engaging main characters. Lavinia’s family and Henry’s friends were entertaining side characters. Especially the children and pets. There were some great funny moments throughout. So many moments that brought a smile to my face. The development of the romance was lovely, watching Henry transition from a self absorbed man who was resentful of people saddling him with responsibilities to a man in love who wants to share in Lavinia’s burdens. Lavinia also had her own obstacles to overcome on the path to love. The books in this series all have the tie-in thread of the bracelet and some brief appearances from other members of the friend group, but they read very well as standalones too. I recommend the whole series, but this is one of my favourites. Such a fabulous book! Definitely read it!

Lavinia is left as caretaker of her five siblings after her parents die. She’ll do anything to make sure they are cared for and happy. She wants nothing more than to get a season for her sister Marion and she goes to great lengths to ensure it’s successful. She’s done everything on her own.

Lord Ashford has no intention of getting involved with a woman, much less marrying. He is very wary of those who want something from him. What will he do when he’s asked to help introduce Lavinia and her sister to the ton?

This was a very fun story. I really enjoyed the younger siblings and their antics. Several times I caught myself laughing out loud.

This is a fun romance with lots of humor. If you like historical romance and romcoms I’m sure you will love this story!

I loved:
Isabella’s dramatic antics
Louie’s pilfering ways
Henry’s rescue of the children
Lord Ramsbury’s send off
The Parrot’s predictions
Grandma’s u predictability

Clean romance with kissing only.

I really liked this one! This was a great ending to a sweet series. I enjoyed meeting all of the five friends and getting to know each one better as they met their match. Lavinia is my favorite. I love her personality, she was just so well-written and relatable! I loved her family (though they made things so difficult for Lavinia sometimes) and I really liked Henry. They were a cute match. A fun book and series!

CONTENT: Clean romance, one innuendo from an unsavory character

Well, The Managing Miss is very similar to Georgette Heyer’s Frederica. Not only the story, even the characteristics of the MCs felt the same. Henry is exactly like Alverstoke and Lavinia is Frederica. Nonetheless, this is a delightful and charming read.

⭐️4/5⭐️
This was endearing to watch a man court an entire family to get the woman he loves. The romance was good but for my requirements, could have used some tweaks.

💕FOR THE REASONS I READ ROMANCE:
The Connection of the Couple: 4/5
Do I believe the couple will endure after the last chapter: 3.5/5
Couple spent enough time together: 3.5/5
Give and Take balance between the couple: 4/5
Couple was balanced and suited: 4/5
Banter and Fun Times: 5/5

🖋️THE WORDS
Show and not Tell: 4/5
Was I transported and enraptured: 4/5
Was the language sophisticated: 4/5

⛔️(SPOILERS BELOW)⛔️
My Personal Preference Lenses:
I just don’t like a love story where one in the couple is not 100% sure about his feelings and intentions from the beginning. Especially if that is the man. He got to know her briefly and figured out he was interested and drawn to her. Then at the first ball, he did his duty and introduced her to the right people and left her. He was uncomfortable with it, he wanted to see her again but he didn’t act on it. And he left her for like two weeks because his job was done. If I am to believe that the H truly loves her, I want him to have less control, I want him to steak his claim on her despite his better judgement, I want him to not be able to control himself and keep other men away. He might have been struggling to understand his feelings and that’s why he didn’t show it but I interpret that as he didn’t love her enough.

🌸OTHER NOTES
Characters Likability:
H: He was not as sure as I prefer. He felt attraction for the h but he did not act on it enough for my tastes. He was a protector, he accepted the h and all her siblings, I think his lonely life is lit up by them all, for that I liked him. However, after his first gestures, he pulled away for a long time then when he perceived she rejected him, he pulled away with the intension of trying again but this was all in his own musings and was not shown to the h. For me, his intentions towards her were not steady and consistent enough.
h: She was a mother to 5 kids who were her brothers and sisters and cousins. That’s a lot for anyone, least of all someone so young. She managed it well and did her best to make everyone happy and comfortable. I liked that the story was about the H lightening her burden, instead of the H seeing her as someone who can lighten his.

The Couple’s Connection:
Their relationship started and as it got going, the H pulled away. As he started coming to their house everyday, she rejected him so we were on hold again. The separations felt divisive and drama to just keep us wanting more. But what was sacrificed was my belief in the H’s ability to offer consistent love and support.

The Ending:
This ended with her needing rescuing and to finally come clean with a white lie she told the H. The H proves his love with a grand gesture. This was done well with no unnecessary drama and with the right amount of love expressed as well as humor. It was a satisfying ending.

SUMMARY
My favorite thing about this book:
The family scenes with the monkey and the kids were so well done. I found every one of them endearing and funny. I also loved how the H reacted to the children.
I liked the intentions of the H to lighten her load, I just needed him to be more consistent about it. But I liked their chemistry, communication and their friendship.

What I didn’t like:
The only thing I had a problem with was the H’s pulling away for not enough of a good reason.

Should you read this: Yes

Will this go on my favorites shelf to read again: No

This novella was all the stars. I seriously loved every second of it. I even loved the parts of the book when the two MC didn’t have page time together. The secondary characters were just THAT good. The siblings and grandma genuinely made me lol several times. I loved their positive family dynamic. I loved how the romance developed. I loved the dry humor, the jaded hero, the managing heroine, the exotic pets, and the hilarious siblings. This book has some great letter writing moments too. Read this booooook! It is short but perfect.

SPOILERS and book notes/quotes:
1808 surrey. A group of girls at school who meet up secretly at night to talk and read romance books and eat food. But now they are going their separate ways. So they got a coral bracelet of good luck to pass around to each other around England to whomever needs the luck most. It’s the regency version of sisterhood of the traveling pants!! They all made a pact to marry for love. Now it’s 6 years later!!! I seriously love Lavinias 3 younger siblings. 14yo hardworking responsible brother Eddie, then a poetic dramatic sister Josephine who gives their pet parrot dramatic lines to recite, and 8yo sister Bridget who has a pet monkey haha. Writing notes to single people of the opposite gender is scandalous in London so I thoroughly enjoyed their back and forth correspondence hehe. It was so flirty and witty. Aww his rescue of her and her siblings while they were being falsely accused! He was a hero in their eyes! I love the fight between Edie and Josephine. She wants to use his billiards stick as a wizards staff for one of her stories. Bahaha and we have a hilariously witty butler too: “ is there an appropriate term for a large group of admirers? A slew of gentlemen, perhaps?” These three children have the best personality!! I love them all so much. I love scenes with them in it. They are seriously laugh out loud hilarious. And I love how loud and long Lavinia laughed. It is rare in a regency novel. Find you a man that makes your heart melt more than a romance novel: “His hand cupped her cheek in the softest caress. “Lavinia,” he whispered, and hearing him say her name did more to her insides than The Love of Count Rudolph had ever done.” I love that what he did to woo her was to lighten her burden. They had to stop a duel and it was so epic. “My darling, darling girl,” he whispered, tucking a wayward curl behind her ear. Lavinia could hardly think straight. “Carlton, I deceived you. From the very beginning. Oscar wanted Marion married off and I was rather desperate. I forged the letter I brought you—” Carlton smiled. “You did, didn’t you? I should be furious.” He framed her face with his hands, his thumbs brushing over her cheeks. “But you’re—” “Going to kiss you.” Awww their letters they send to each other when they are engaged! And the wedding was perfect with all my favorite people there. Very satisfying ending!!!

Lavinia Harcourt is our resident managing miss. After the loss of her parents and aunt and uncle, Lavinia becomes caregiver and manager of her grandmother, cousins and siblings and a couple of havoc wrecking pets. When she makes a deal to save her brother’s inheritance, she will do whatever it takes to get her cousin married. Taking her entire household to London for the season is just the beginning. Soon, she hand delivers a forged letter from her father’s friend, the Earl of Carlton.

Only it’s not her father’s friend but his son, the new Earl of Carlton, Henry Kingston. Not wanting his father’s debt to go unpaid, Henry agrees to help Lavinia and her cousin have success this season. Despite their best efforts, Lavinia and Henry soon find themselves falling for each other. Both must decide if they are willing to pursue this relationship and whether or not a forged letter will stand between them.

If I were to describe “The Managing Miss” in just a few words, I would use joy, chaos and so much fun! This novella is a light-hearted read with such a sweet love story. I loved Lavinia and Henry’s unexpected run-ins and how their story unfolded. There was never a dull moment and I loved how Henry became a part of the Harcourt family from the beginning. This family doesn’t do quiet and the London season just got more exciting.

Heidi Kimball is an amazing author! I jump to read whatever she writes and this recent release may be a novella but it packs a punch and is the perfect quick read. I loved that I didn’t feel the need for more of the story that can sometimes accompany a novella. Lavina and Henry’s story felt complete. The one thing I want more of is the Harcourt family! I love when a story can focus on the main couple but also have fun side characters who add but don’t take away from the main characters. Heidi does a great job at this.

“The Managing Miss” is part of the "Promise of Forever After" series. It can be read as a stand-alone. I haven’t read any of the other novellas in the series but I hope to do so soon after reading this one.

Lavinia Harcourt is everything that is capable in managing a household with two exotic pets, three younger siblings, a cantankerous grandmother, all while attempting to get her cousin wed. However, what she doesn't quite know yet is that love is not always easily managed.

Henry Kingston, Earl of Carlton, is to often relied upon for funds and means from his family due to wealth and title. He doesn't feel the need to marry for the woman would probably only wish to secure his status more than him, which would only be expected. What he doesn't expect, is an independent single young woman to call upon him with a letter of an unfulfilled obligation by his late father. And his desire to see it fulfilled.

What follows spirals into a series of entangling events that make his confirmed bachelor life seem boring. Yet, can love be born out of deceit? And can two independent hearts become one? Find out in this absolutely delightful novella!

This was such a fun read that kept me turning pages way past my bedtime. The antics of the Harcourt household made me smile. I loved Lavinia and Henry so much. How they came together and how their love blossomed from the soil of an unexpected friendship. I was really curious how things would be resolved in the end, but I personally like how everything came to a beautiful conclusion. I definitely wouldn't hesitate to recommend this one for anyone looking for a sweet historical romance with a side of laughter!

Oh my word, I absolutely loved this sweet novella! The story was witty and engaging and I loved the sweet and swoony romance!

Lavinia has to manage her three younger siblings, her two cousins, her grumpy grandmother, plus the family's pet monkey and parrot, all while trying to navigate London society for the first time as she tries to find a husband for her cousin Marion.

With a bit of subterfuge on her part, Lavinia secures a little help from Lord Carlton but even when he has fulfilled his promise, he cannot seem to stay away from the engaging Lavinia and the entire Harcourt clan.

Strong, capable herione
Tea with the Harcourts
Josephine's dramatics
White-knight hero that falls first
The jam-loving Grandma
Fabulous chemistry
The "slew of gentleman"
A thieving monkey
The duel scene

Seriously. I loved every single bit of it until I finished and realized that the Harcourts aren't real and I will never meet them. Their characters are SO memorable and SO fun and all the antics and fun lead to a most satisfying happily ever after.

This is the perfect read for a little regency pick me up. I will certainly be reading it again and again!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
