The Instructional Coaching Handbook: 200+ Troubleshooting Strategies for Success

Three instructional coaches share more than 200 of the most helpful problem-solving strategies they've used in their decades-long work with teachers, administrators, and coaches.

The Instructional Coaching Handbook is not a new model of coaching. It addresses common hiccups that prevent productive coaching conversations from happening in the first place. From their thousands of annual school visits, the authors recognize that coaches frequently confront similar challenges when helping educators address seven skills and dispositions—and they devote a chapter to each:

* Efficacy
* Equity
* Academic instruction
* Social-emotional instruction
* Openness to feedback
* Lesson planning
* Team membership

Each chapter features scores of practical, research-based strategies with a history of success. Mix and match them according to your leadership style, the needs of the student or teacher, and the demands of the curriculum.

In addition to implementation stories that show what the strategies look like in a range of classroom settings, this handbook includes effective tools and resources that help guide you through the thorniest of coaching conversations. All you have to do is dive into an appropriate chapter; scan for ideas that match your style, the educators you coach, and your unique context; and start making a difference!

After ordering a copy, I received an advance copy of this book from Keith Young so that I could provide a review.
The Instructional Coaching Handbook: 200+ Troubleshooting Strategies for Success (Young, A Keith, Julien, Angela Bell, Osborne, Tamarra) is a powerful resource which defines and provides excellent tools to support the instructional coaching process. The strategies are very accessible due to the authors’ clear and transparent descriptions. Pertinent research is provided by the authors throughout the book to support the rationale for the selected actions and strategies. The research also addresses the impact on student learning. The authors effectively address all aspects of the coaching process to include an insightful examination of the dynamics of interpersonal relationships within the coaching process. The authors provide astute guidelines for building appropriate relationships between the coach and the educator.
As a former administrator, instructional systems specialist, and teacher, I would have welcomed such a formidable and accessible resource to guide my interactions with my colleagues as we worked together to create effective learning environments for all students. I am planning to order several more copies of this effective handbook to share with my colleagues. I know that they will find it an invaluable handbook in their daily work positively impacting the lives of students and educators.

A welcome and timely resource for teacher coaches, The Instructional Coaching Handbook: 200+ Troubleshooting Strategies for Success (ASCD), comes in a highly useable format for either thorough self-study, or gathering quick tips on the run to manage coaching snafus. Reeling from recent educational shifts, coaches and teachers alike will find highly suitable matching change pathways from more than 200 strategies to improve instruction, facilitate adult learning and share collegial professional practice to create a growth identity mindset.
Having worked alongside Keith Young conducting school improvement in the Middle East, I’ve witnessed these practices successfully implemented one teacher at a time, while meeting targets for overall school improvement. This team of writers uniquely captures how changes look in practice, in real time, in day-to-day teaching. Multiple examples highlight the details of coaching scenarios in the “What it looks like in practice” section at the close of each of the eight chapters and show how effectively interventions can resolve student problems using teacher-friendly coaching practices.
Loads of research scaffolds practical strategies, each with achievable, specific and timely aims. The focus on using data to either inform practice, reveal outmoded habits of teaching, or find patterns of inequities pulls together the usually conflicting threads of affectively supporting teachers or making explicit what needs to change. The book masterfully weaves them together. A highly recommended addition for school or district PD, administrators, coaches and teachers.

I am a social worker (SW), who received a draft copy of this book and then I brought this book to share with other social workers. My work is the practice of social work that leads me into and towards community organizing, group development, early childhood social work, and training child welfare social workers. This book has been instrumental in helping me re-organize how I approach coaching social workers becoming social workers. The authors actually reference this on page 4 "with the coach becoming a teacher of the teacher," and moving coaching towards the ability to operationalize interventions. I am also dyslectic and struggle with linear organization. This text is so user friendly and simply organized around co-solving. I love this idea of co-solving challenges. I see my self as a described personality strategist (someone who leads with their personality, although I know the science). This text help me to understand in order to improve upon this coaching strategies, I need to add the following: "Offer Recognition to empower the social workers I work with. This means acknowledging precisely what the social worker did; the effect of the action; what the social work needs to do next; and why the practice is vital to continue" (p.20). Although is so much more to assist in coaching, this Offer Recognition has empower me as coach to continue with the work. Thank each of you (Young, Julien, and Osborne) for the research and offering of this book to those of us who needed these new ideas around coaching!

This book is a gem. When I received the review copy from Dr. Young, I was thinking since I don’t teach in K-12 anymore, why I should read this. However, once I started reading it, I see that there are concepts and practical technics of coaching that can easily be applied to higher education too. Part of dissertation mentoring is also coaching; coaching efficacy and equity caught my eye first. Then I see that openness for feedback chapter, which I believe is very helpful for anyone who mentors students or faculty.

After working with Keith in the past, I have full confidence in his abilities to coach teachers, coaches, and administrators. He has a straightforward and kind way of working with people and he has had years of proven success. After 15 years of coaching, this book is what I have been searching for. Up until this point, I have read theory and content coaching books and appreciate what those two areas have brought to my practice. However, this is THE BOOK that I have needed to tackle the day to day work of coaching. It is based on research and years of hands-on hard work and combines all of that into one concise resource. The ideas can be implemented immediately- I have already incorporated many in just a short time from reading this handbook. I don't often have time to sit for long reads, which makes this book so practical. The Instructional Coaching Handbook is organized by category so you can go directly to what you need and pull from many strategies in that area and utilize them immediately. I have coached, mentored, and encouraged others throughout my career to launch into their own coaching career. It can be very difficult to know where to start and what to do. With this book in hand, that is no longer an issue. Buy a copy of this book for every coach and aspiring coach you know. They will love you for it. I have already recommended it to my district office. Wow, hats off to Keith and his team!

As an instructional coach, professional development books have always been an integral part of the work I do in learning the latest in best practices for the classroom as well as guides to help develop the art of coaching. The Instructional Coaching Handbook is one of the most practical, user-friendly professional development books I have read in my career. The book is well organized by topics that you might find yourself in while coaching. Each strategy is written in a way that is detailed, yet concise and provides steps for immediate implementation. Having worked with Keith Young, I have seen many of these strategies in person and know their effectiveness in helping build lasting relationships between coaches and teachers. Many other coaching-related books discuss practice through chapters and chapters long of narration. While there are explicit examples of these how these strategies have been used, the quickness you are able to pick up The Instructional Coaching Handbook, locate a strategy, and put it to use is unlike any other book I have used. I consult this book before many of my coaching conversations. This is a must-have for teacher leaders, instructional coaches, and administrators looking to improve and add to their feedback and coaching tools. I did receive this book as a free gift.

As an instructional coach, this book is one of the most helpful all-in-one books I've read. There are real stories to go along with each strategy and strategies are cited. There are 10+ pages of references for all these strategies-- I know when I use a strategy, it is not only backed by the real application story, but by actual research. After reading it, I've already gone back to the index several times before meeting with a teacher to review a skill. This morning I went back to 5.25 Building Trust and Chapter 8's Listening Tips. "A primary characteristic of adult learners is that they want recognition of their unique experiences. One of the best ways to do this is to acknowledge" (p. 235). Making this my goal this week coaching! This definitely will remain right next to my computer on my desk!

I received an advanced review copy of this book.
Writing not directly for teachers but for the coaches of teachers, authors and educators Keith Young, Tamara Osbourne, and Angela Bell Julien outline numerous strategies for leading K-12 educators to increase learning outcomes, maintain positivity, and find pedagogically sound ways to solve problems in the classroom. The authors guide professionals in how to be the outside eyes in an educational setting to recognize problems and help teachers find solutions.
This book is far more than a list of “things you can do better in the classroom,” although there are a ton of those. It outlines ways to lead teachers to their best teaching through self-reflection and examination of their teaching. Topics are arranged in easy to find, numbered sections for easy reference. The index is clear and extensive with every header and term quickly accessible.
The book’s authors respect the expertise of the teachers, and their coaching techniques ultimately benefit the students on the receiving end as much or more than the teachers. Education coaches’ strategies are often directed at helping teachers discover from their own strongpoints how to help students. Much of the coaching seems to originate in a Socratic form of discovery for educators. Multiple lists of appropriate questions for a variety of situations provide templates for coaches to guide educators through analyses of problems and paths to improvement.
For example, a chapter is devoted to coaching equity in the classroom with strategies for reaching traditionally low-performing students. This chapter briefly addresses the prickly issue of identifying racist attitudes through a discussion of Attribution Theory, among other suggestions. The book never engages in finger pointing but teaches coaches how to lead teachers to recognize how their own attitudes might contribute to diminished expectations of students traditionally identified as “problems.” Ideas are regularly linked back to what the teacher can control and what students can achieve, two spectrums of action that may be harder to recognize than one might think.
A theme that runs throughout is raising teacher expectations of students. Real life examples from the authors’ experiences coaching in the classroom are offered with a list of focus strategies. One of the categories that I identified with as an educator was the Warm Demander, a teaching approach that integrates firm expectations with a friendly demeanor.
Suggested improvements for coaches to point out to teachers are followed up with alternative strategies. For example, in section 3.17, the authors discuss the importance of modeling academic language in place of engaging in student slang. There are better ways to connect with students. Modeling academic language is a way of ushering students through a new door of communication that allows them to feel part of an additional group. Using slang and not trusting that students can understand academic language limits them. Respect that they are capable of being part of the larger conversation and know that their future success will be enhanced by showing they can use the language of the business and academic world.
Other areas of instruction include helping teachers find occasions to laugh with students; how to point out sarcasm without being accusative; why mindfulness is more effective than venting; and how to help teachers develop good relationships with students who are difficult to like because it’s been proven that positive relationships promote increased student learning. Each section not only engages coaches to convey what teachers should do, it outlines how teachers can achieve it. Sections at the end of chapters, What it Looks Like in Practice, give real-life scenarios in compelling narrative form implementing the coaching techniques. Stories show what went wrong, steps to correct, and final outcomes.
Though this book is aimed at coaches of K-12 educators, educators themselves could benefit directly because it provides so many strategies for recognizing obstacles to student learning and practical steps to effectively achieving learning outcomes.

A must-have for coaches, teachers, administrators, and teacher educators!

If you work in education, have a family member or friend who is an educator/administrator, or if you’re a parent of a school-age student, The Instructional Coaching Handbook is for you or would make a great gift. It contains many strategies, tools, ideas, and suggestions that can be implemented with teachers and in classrooms today. Having read an advanced copy of the book, I’m already planning how to incorporate it into my undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral-level classes in teacher education.

In the Introduction, Young, Julien, and Osborne have a section called, Coaching is a Conversation, and that’s just what you have in this book. You might have a preservice teacher or teacher having difficulty planning lessons. Chapter 6: Lesson Planning helps you identify what the specific issue is, then provides strategies to use; every chapter is like talking to the coaching gurus.

My favorite features of each chapter are:
• The authors provide a table with supporting research at the beginning of each chapter. As a faculty member in a Research I Institution, having these citations not only provides credibility to the information, but they provide a starting place when working with graduate students interested in further research on these topic areas.
• The list of reflective questions tailored to the chapter topic.
• The section called, “What it Looks Like in Practice,” shares vignettes from the author’s experiences of working with teachers and coaches. Reviewing them allows me to recall my own experiences that I can share with my students.
• The section, “Coaches, Consider This” asks the reader to be reflective about their own practice. If we’re asking students and teachers to be reflective, we need to be able to walk the talk in our own practice.
• The clear examples, visuals, and tables allow the reader to see the information in a different way and can be used when teaching the strategy.
• The author’s appropriate use of humor. Working with students and teachers, interesting and funny – sometimes painfully funny – things happen all the time and they aren’t shy about sharing how a strategy worked or how and why it didn’t work.

Young, Julien, and Osborne also understand that coaches are working with teachers who have graduated from comprehensive teacher education programs, have alternative teaching certificates, or started teaching through emergency certification and have no knowledge of teaching content or pedagogy. Chapter 8: Tools That Will Help provides guidance on how to differentiate working with teachers when there is such a disparate experience base.

You will not regret purchasing this book for yourself or anyone you know. It’s a treasure trove of ideas and strategies just waiting to help teachers become more knowledgeable about their students and content.

In the “Instructional Coaching Handbook”, Young, Bell and Osborne have compiled years of learning from their combined professional experiences, evidence-based research and anecdotal lessons to produce a concise resource for not only teacher coaches, but for any educator at all levels of education. The book contains a variety of long-term tools and strategies in each chapter, in addition to a multitude of specific strategies that any coach or teacher can pick up and implement in the classroom immediately. As a speech-language pathologist who mentors and evaluates new SLPs during their initial certification process, I find this book reaches an audience beyond classroom teachers and coaches. Some of my favorite aspects of the book include:

-The positive mindset of the authors’ approach to coaching. They even provide specific language scripts to use when approaching various difficult topics and conversations as a coach.

-The examples of self-reflective questions provided to promote introspection in order to facilitate instructional improvement. Each chapter contains a detailed list of questions for a coach to use to prompt reflection on instruction with a teacher, in addition to questions for the coach to consider about the information presented in the chapter.

-The authors illustrate the importance of continual self-evaluation to ensure that expectations and standards remain elevated for students. This is particularly relevant to special education teachers due to the ease with which expectations have a tendency to decline over several years of teaching.

-The impact of social-emotional wellness and connection to learning. The authors emphasize a two-fold aspect of relationship building not only in regard to the coach-teacher relationship but also the student-teacher relationships. Social-emotional well-being is discussed in detail as a fundamental prerequisite for connection and openness to risk taking for educators to make positive change and for students to become psychologically available for learning.

-The importance of elevating academic language over the use of slang in student output. This will facilitate their academic performance as they progress in learning as well as contribute to professional success. Raising the language expectation is grounding for social-emotional support as it assures students that teachers believe they are capable of the use of more formal language.

This is a practical guide recommended for use by any instructional coach or educator!

I had the honor of reading an ADVANCE COPY of "The Instructional Coaching Handbook;" so many useful and practical strategies to use while out on the field. With over 200 plus strategies, there is something for everyone, from
the most experienced to the novice coach. Coaching is about creating trusting relationships, and the authors have accomplished just that between the reader and their written work.

You are able to trust these strategies because it is for coaches by coaches sharing their gained wisdom from experiences they had along the way.

One of the most interesting things, that stood out to me is how versatile this book is, guiding us with practical everyday experiences from PreK and onwards and yet still relatable regardless of which group of educators you are supporting.

As an ECE coach with several sites spanning an area that is over 3,000 sqm. Coaching can often feel like a solitary experience, which often entails reflecting and decompressing in between each drive to the next site and trying to figure out if we used the right tools for the occasion
Now, I feel that I have a coaching team at all times to bounce off ideas on the spot.

Thank you to the amazing authors for this wonderful handbook. I can't stress enough value of this book.

I've had the pleasure of working with Keith Young for years and he has a wealth of knowledge and experience that is unmatched. His dedication to empower educators to maximize student learning and experiences is inspiring and all of that comes through on the pages of this book. This book is THE resource that does it all. Researched, proven effective strategies aligned to ALL areas of highly effective teaching and learning along with real life stories of applying a multitude of strategies provide transparent, approachable, meaningful ways to foster growth for educators and students. This book is for ANYONE guiding teachers throughout their career. I reference this regularly and know that I will continue to for the rest of my career. This book is truly transformational. It has the power to transform classrooms, schools, districts, and the culture of teaching and learning. I am grateful to have received this book in a workshop and give it my highest recommendation. In my 15 years of teaching, attending conferences, and time spent swimming through a mountain of texts, I have never come across such a resource that is as succinct, clear, engaging, and transformative.

The Instructional Coaching Handbook is unique among coaching books in that it is truly a synthesis of a wide ranging research base with highly empirical evidence in practice. The authors have learned and researched themselves for years what works well when coaching educators. The book takes these lessons and organizes them into easily digestible but also actionable pieces. Having tried these strategies with my own colleagues, I can definitively say that they work. I also like how the book goes deeper than other coaching texts in terms of how to be student focused and specially how to actually give feedback to educators. It's not just another book about a coaching system...it's based in theory but so practical in terms of how to implement in a real life context. The coaching "apps" are a game changer for anyone giving feedback to educators whether it is a coach, administrator, or teacher leader. I also think that the apps work very well for giving feedback to students in certain contexts. Anyone serious about helping to support and improve educators' skills needs to read this.

A Must-Have Tool for Coaches!

This book is so user-friendly! The chapters’ titles are self-explanatory and as I read through the table of contents, I could immediately picture which teachers or teams would benefit from coaching around the different chapters’ topics.

Each chapter includes numbered strategies with a brief synopsis of each and real-life stories of how to apply them. I also love how the research begins the strategies is included to deepen my own knowledge/research base as an instructional coach. I received this book during a workshop and can’t wait to dig into it even more! In a busy world, it’s so handy to have 200+ best practice coaching strategies consolidated into one resource.

I have been reading various chapters from it for a couple of months now as part of a community of practice group, it has been nice being able to discuss the different aspects of coaching with other coaches that are putting in the work.

I am now taking a workshop with 2 of the 3 authors and it has taken the book to a new level. We have been able to practice come of the strategies that are mentioned in the book such as the Coaching Apps, I highly recommend using them!

I look forward to implementing some of the strategies while I coach next year with my early childhood educators.

I received this copy from a workshop.
