"Bleak, poignant, and powerful. A dark imagining of an all-too-possible future. Elle Ann Brown's storytelling is phenomenal!" -Danielle Harrington, bestselling author of The Hollis Timewire Series
"If you liked the Divergent Series or Hunger Games, pick this book up. You won't be disappointed." -ARC reader review
Turning sixteen isn't always fun, not when it means you are now a slave to a corrupt and broken society. The only thing Misty has to look forward to is earning her own wages so she can move out of her abusive father's home, but what will happen when she doesn't have enough to survive? Will young love help Misty get through tough times? Will having a best friend for a doctor, a higher-up in their society, give her better odds than the others? Or will Misty find herself left with only Bread & Bones?
Elle (Leslie) Ann Brown is an Inspirational Romance writer residing in the great state of Texas--though she doesn't own a horse, cowboy gear, or listen to country music--who loves to love. She deeply loves her husband of twenty years, her four children, and her friends. She also loves to sing, play bass guitar & piano, lattes any time of the day, sweets and more sweets, summer nights, laughing until she cries, and food with more calories than the daily suggested limit.
Though she enjoyed writing through school and online blogs in short form, Elle didn't discover her love of reading until her early thirties. Since 2018, she has released six full-length novels, a novella, and two short stories. Though the exact genres may vary, the overall arc of her writing is sweet love stories wrapped in inspirational fiction.
**A note about my reviews. Once a cheerleader, always a cheerleader. I post reviews primarily to celebrate other authors and their accomplishments. As an author, I know how much work it takes to write a book and then do even more work to get it into readers’ hands. Because of this, I will rarely rate anything less than a 4-star. If you are looking for detailed reviews, you won’t find them from me, but don’t worry: they are all over the place from others. On behalf of authors everywhere, thank you for taking the time to review. It helps us more than you know!
Ok, this short story was intense. A sweet love story always pulls me in, but I was completely taken aback by the ending, in the best way. It made me want to read The Stacks again, and now I must! Both are so well written. Bread and Bones is equally intriguing and heartbreaking. 5 stars for Elle Ann!
An awesome quick read to fill in the gaps/storylines mentioned in the Stacks. It’s packed full of suspense, a couple of unexpected surprises. Although you know what the ending it, it’s written in a way that allows you to hold on to the possibility of another outcome.
