When 26-year-old governess Autumn Everleigh witnesses her sister’s engagement to infamous world traveller Mr. Williams, her world falls apart. An undoubtedly dynamic character with a charming personality and generous spirit, he is entirely unsuitable for Patience. Autumn, who has cared for her little sister since their wretched childhood, is fiercely protective of the only family she has left in the world.

Mr. Williams’ proposal wrenches open a lifelong fracture of disagreement between the sisters. Patience yearns to explore the world, be out in society, and escape the mundanity of her provincial life. Autumn, on the other hand, is all too aware of the dangers that could befall a young woman. Almost entirely self-sufficient, she craves safety and predictability.

Terrified of losing her sister after years of peaceful sanctuary together, Autumn decides there is only one way to protect Patience from her lover: separate the happy couple before it’s too late…

We knew the author of this book when he was in a homeschool co-op with our kids! Super proud of Justice - he did a really good job on his first published novel. Can't believe he isn't even 20 years old. Can't wait to see what he does next.

THE SPACE BETWEEN THE SEASONS is a sweet story that shows what it means to grow as a person and that letting go isn’t about what you’re losing, but rather what you’re gaining.

I really enjoyed this book! It held my interest until the very end.

As it should be in any story, the characters learn their respected lessons that help them grow from their flaws to become better people. You can’t help but root for them. Even when they do something wrong, you hope they turn things around before it’s too late.

I also really liked the lullaby the sisters sing in the story. It’s an adorable song. If you would actually like to hear what the song sounds like, head on over to Justice Tilsher’s website and give it a listen.

I highly recommend this book if you enjoy clean timepiece stories with a heartfelt message and a cast of enjoyable, as well as relatable, characters.

Truly enjoyable

This was an enjoyable clean book by the author. It was entertaining, historical, details that helped you to see the places you read about while not needing the gratuitous bodice ripping scenes. Great refresh for my day.

Autumn Everleigh has been responsible for her younger sister Patience since they were young. They are as close as two sisters could possibly be. When Patience expresses her wish to marry, Autumn panics as her plans to purchase a house with her sister fall apart. She has been saving and saving to buy the house of her dreams. Autumn decides she must rescue her sister from marrying a most unsuitable man. She is absolutely certain that Patience's new fiance is underhanded and will ruin her sister's life.

Unfortunately, this book was not for me, so writing this review has been a bit challenging, to say the least. I do want to say that it was a valiant attempt for a first novel, but the narrative between characters was too silly to be believable, even with a great attempt to suspend my disbelief.

When I read the description of this book, I thought that it would be right up my alley. I enjoy historical novels, especially when there is some humour and romance in the wordplay between the main characters as they try to navigate challenges or upsets in their lives. In this case, it was a bit too much for me, and I found it difficult to make it through this novel. The older sister, Autumn, comes off as super girlish and flighty, despite the fact that she is supposed to be twenty-six in the 1800s. This is odd when you think that life expectancy during that time period was early 40s. Patience, the younger sister, came off as a silly, spoiled toddler.

I recognize that the story is designed to be heartwarming, and I honestly tried to like it. I am sure this book will be enjoyable to some readers looking for a lighthearted romance; however, for me, it was sadly a struggle.

Thank you to Reedsy for the review copy.

This was such a fascinating and heartfelt debut novel—made even more compelling by the fact that it was written by a young adult male, which is not exactly who you’d expect to write a Victorian-era historical romance! And yet, The Space Between Seasons surprised me in the best of ways.

The story centers on Autumn and Patience Everleigh, two sisters who carry the scars of childhood trauma into their adult lives. At times, I was aggravated with their choices—and then, just a few pages later, deeply endeared to them. Their emotional growth, their interactions with others, and their evolving understanding of love and grace are the heart of this novel.

As someone who loves Jane Austen and The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion, I’ve read widely in this genre and time period. So I’ll be honest—there were a few moments where I could tell this was a young author’s first book. But there were far more moments where I forgot that completely, lost in the scene, surprised by the beauty or depth of a single line. That’s a rare and promising thing.

Justice Tilsher clearly writes with purpose. His desire to bring Christian values into fiction—not as a sermon, but as a sincere lens on life’s hardships—is something I really respect. This story offers truth, beauty, and goodness—all wrapped in a thoughtful narrative. I’d love to see more from him in the future.

Recommended for readers 16 and up. Content warning: this book contains themes of suicide.
