The British Raj refers to the time from 1858 to 1947 when the British Crown directly ruled the Indian subcontinent. During those 90 years, India saw enormous social, political, and cultural upheaval. New systems of education were introduced, and increasing industrialization brought societal change. The British administration also united large numbers of indigenous people, though they were often united mainly by their opposition to the British and their desire for independence.
The growing independence movement saw the emergence of one of the most influential and charismatic political leaders Mahatma Gandhi. His policy of non-violent opposition inspired people across the world and helped to guide India to independence. However, with independence came partition as the British divided the region according to religious and ethnic lines. Instead of a single independent nation, the Indian subcontinent became two and then three separate nation-states, something that led to violence and conflicts that persist today.
This is the story of how the British Raj inadvertently created the modern nations of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

It should not be forgotten that the principal mission of the Raj was to provide economic and trading benefits to the British Empire, not to improve the lot of the Indian people. This is most clearly illustrated by events such as the famines that afflicted this country during the Raj. Major famines in the second part of the nineteenth century killed up to 10 million people in India. In part, these deaths were caused by a refusal on the part of the British administration to provide relief for the victims or even to slow the export of food from India to Britain.
Since the title of this series of books is "Hourly History," it is evident that this is an overview of a tumultuous time in India. While reading this, I kept thinking back to the movie Gandhi. As a cinematic explanation of the era, the film and this book combine well.
For a quick explanation of a difficult era for India and the British, this was a great reading experience. It explains the division between India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh well.
I found the book very interesting and informative. The British Raj was a period of direct British rule from 1858 until the independence of India in 1947. Prior to this the British east India company, a trading company became so powerful that it was involved with the politics of India and even had its own army.
I enjoyed reading about Mahatma Gandhi and the events leading up to the independence of India.
A dearly good read 😃 I enjoyed this book a lot of hard work must have bee put in to this book I wonder what they would have done without the British not all bad I am sure
It is worth remembering that no such country as India existed before the East India Company cobbled it together out of independent often warring states. There is no excuse for colonialism, however that was the way it was then. The Indian Mutiny is largely recognised now as the sepoys seeking better employers than the EIC, nothing to do with independence.
