The MC and Narrators killed this book for me.

Not going to waste time on an isekai book with a moron for a main character.
A good isekai relies on the main character. The setup is always the same, the world details hardly matter, but the main character sets the tone. This one has a ridiculously idiotic main character. It makes for a boring, predictable story.I got maybe ten percent through it and quit.

Great fun, and a lot of story
An oxymoron of a book. The story is full-on, nonstop and long and it held my interest for all of it because I hovered through all 1200+ pages in a week. It’s incongruous, paradoxical and inconsistent. Our protagonist, Damien, is aptly named (think back to that 70s film The Omen). I will explain all.
Damien is a librarian, handsome, carefree and avoids commitment and yes, a self-confessed womaniser, which is easy to see because the opening scene starts with him ‘pulling’ a gorgeous woman (I already didn’t like him). Alas for Damien the woman is more than she appears and before he knows it he is sinking through a portal in the floor. It seems his ‘date’ is a lesser goddess and Damien has been chosen as her champion.
Pretty predictable LitRPG stuff so far, the handsome knight on the front cover he is about to become….erm not exactly, which Damien soon discovers when he awakens in the body of an old dead man. So begins the story of our fledgling hero as the body of the man he has inherited is on a different world, Nordan, one full of Zorta (Z), magic that inherits every living thing. With the help of a bunny rabbit named Sprinkles, he gets some Z and finds it reduces his age and the dilapidated body he is in starts to change and reverse its ageing. Now starts his adventure.
I don’t like to give spoilers, but trust me I have barely scratched the surface. This is chapter 1. Now, it turns out Damien’s transition did not go smoothly on account he panicked and tried to escape his fate. Everyone on Nordan gets one school of magic and due to his panicking, he ended up in the old man who happened to be a healer. A healer is a bit rubbish he thinks for a swash-buckling hero. Only it turns out, Champions get a second school of magic and Damien’s turns out to be Necromancy. Yep, he has the power over life and death. Suffice it to say, it takes a bit of adjustment for our hero. It is not an easy start and it turns out you can’t trust anyone.
The story is gloriously long (a bit like this review). I mean it is great value for money (the book not this review) and I raced through it which says a lot for the story. The characters, especially the undead ones, are a load of fun. The world of Nordan feels suitably large and epic and is filled with every fantasy race imagined, from Minotaurs to Naga. There are some gripes, grammatical errors and a pet peeve of mine, the excessive use of the word ‘snicker’. It is used so much that after a while I just snickered when I came across it (see what I did there?) which made my wife think I was a bit touched since sometimes it occurred two or three times on a page.
Also, when I think about it, Damien is pretty evil. I mean he jumps in with both feet. Wipes out whole villages of people whether they be Brownies (not the girl guide variety that would be a wrong too far!), Naga, Centaurs. You name it, Damien will kill it. Think about that. Whole families, male, female, their young all to fuel his growing needs. It is pretty sick and yet spoken of with such flippancy. I guess Damien is an anti-hero, yet he wants to be good and retain his humanity but then does everything counter to that. He is loyal, but only to his minions it seems to me, the rest can go holler. This uncomfortable facet of the book is counter-set by the fact everyone else seems just as bloodthirsty as he is but he does take it to another level. Damien seems at times overpowered, yet other characters are vastly more powerful. He is a genius at tactics (who knew?). He can raise the dead and the living with his Necromancy and Healer abilities and indeed he does. It all created a lack of jeopardy with Damien which is not so good but then there was enough to go around for all those other great characters that this was offset to an extent.
So, I will wrap this up. Engaging read, long and not without its flaws but I have to give the author a tip of my hat because I enjoyed it on many levels. A cookie-cutter (anti)hero maybe but it was a fun ride and great value. The last third of the story had more to offer as well, elevating it which it needed. The Amazon ‘Look Inside’ will give you a feel for the story and writing style. If you like LitRPG then give it a try.

A fantasy-filled isekai novel starting off with an exciting... blind date? Then his date is a complete psycho and the info dump about the world we haven't even been to yet starts. The girl gives off a dozen major red flags and the MC just ignores every one of them, because boobs.
It's even explicitly stated in the book by the goddess that the MC was chosen for the isekai because he was the only one dumb enough to be tricked into it. That's one hell of a way to build up a lead character.
Then he enters Nordan and almost immediately ends up bashing in the skull of a little girl's pet rabbit as it just sat there watching him.
Nothing within the first part of the book has hooked me or given me any reason to continue reading. The MC is canonically a dumbass that falls for unbelievably stupid tricks and doesn't have a single redeeming feature or a reason to root for him. Did not finish.

If it were 600 pages instead of >1000 it'd likely be a 5 from me, as I liked the story and the characters. The writing is good, it just dragged on a bit too much. I know it's a "progression" story, but a whole lot of that should have been compressed, or elided as "the past few months saw..." in order to tighten it up. Overall I enjoyed it and have already downloaded the next book to see where it goes.

MC was dumb as a rock. So many stupid choices. Without plot armor he would have been dead on day 1.
Was also bugged on the complete lack of character progression and development for the MC. Author had a cool idea for magic set up for him where he could integrate 2 magics in a fun original way and then proceeded to drop it and focus on 1 boring spell. What a waste.

This is one of the worst books I’ve listened to (in Audible) in a long time. The story itself was sub-par, but the narrators (particularly for the female characters) were very grating. I couldn’t deal with the narration anymore and had to give up listening to the book.

I liked it more than I thought I would
When I was looking for a good isekai (portal/reincarnation/transported to another universe) story I stumbled upon this likely for the same reason you might have, because Isekai is in the title! While I will say that it grew a bit long and tiresome at times, it was overall a good story and one way or another most of the things that caused such a long winding trip to the end either ended up adding a bit of flavor to the world of became more relevant later on. My recommendation is to give it a chance and then decide for yourself if you're going to continue onwards into the sequels. As for me I'm off to continue the story and indulge the passion my mother and LeVar Burton helped instill in me after waiting for Sesame Street to end, off down that rainbow 🌈 I go!

Long in a good way, meandering adventures, unpredictable a bit.
I absolutely love when a LitRPG/GameLit series is obscenely long. I feel like I actually got to immerse myself and enjoy reading. I love how Damien views fighting and winning. It's hilarious how his actions boggle his opponents. The story is well written, and I didn't notice typos or errors, which is impressive in my opinion. I enjoy the large family he's creating, and I can only imagine how he could grow in his own power and those of his friends and minions.

Mistakes: I found a lot scattered throughout this book. It's a long book, with lots of little mistakes.
Plot: The story even with mistakes was good enough I pre-ordered book two. Book one has a lot going on.
Characters: Interesting characters with no haram. While there is flirting and sex it's all fade to black thankfully.

Fantastic
I really enjoyed this book. It took a bit to me to get into it but once I did it became a fantastic tale and a rollicking adventure. I love that it's a long book. The character development is good. The highs and lows are great. Overall this book delivered some much needed entertainment. 5 stars all the way. Great job Han Yang!

That’s what A book should be like
This was a fantastic and long book that hit all the fantasy fans want list. I truly liked this book. The MC is strong but not op. Some small typos but otherwise awesome!

I've just finished Isekai Magus by Han Yang, and holy cow, what an epic adventure, and the next BIG thing in Litrpg and progression fantasy. I was absolutely blown away by this book. It started off a touch slow, but now that it's over, and I'm looking back at it, I'm just, blown away. At over 1100 pages, buckle yourselves in for an adventure that never seems to end. I spent over a week unable to put the book down. Everytime I thought it was time for a break, a chapters cliff hanger kept forcing me to read just one more. I think my marriage might have suffered haha!
The MC is a healer/necromancer, which is a really fun combo that the author really takes advantage of in all the best ways. As a necromancer, he faces all the challenges a necromancer would face, as well as all the sweet sweet boons. It has a fantastic and really deep magic system, with an extremely basic stat system, which makes for a really fun combination. Leveling in this book is incredibly difficult and results in some really fun outcomes and consequences. The MC and his party are often rewarded for their creativity and willingness to try out new ideas. There is no sexual content in this book, besides the fact that it mentions that it happens and it's not forced and feels very natural, which for me, is perfect, because that's not why I read these books.
And the battle scenes, oh my, the battles scenes become so epic, by the end of one, I literally shout 'YES' at the end of one. This is a very fun, easy read, that you will absolutely become invested in. I felt personally betrayed by the betrayals, fell in love with his friends, and agreed with his friends when the MC does something stupid and is told so by his friends.
I don't want to give too much away, because it really is a treat to encounter the twists, turns and everything in between naturally. The pacing is actually amazing, which can often be a struggle for books of this size and scope. The plot, main, overarching, and sub, are all extremely well thought out and captivating. As a person who loved(s) He Who Fights With Monsters, The Completionist Chronicles, and Divine Dungeon, I would say that if you liked those, you will love this. Definitely, without a doubt, my favorite book to date.
For those wondering, there isn't an 'Audiobook' out yet, but up to chapter 31 is free on youtube. It is also available on KU, and the author has said there is a second book coming out next month, and oh man, I have to clear my schedule for that one.

One of the best isekai I’ve read. Most isekai type works are obviously Japanese and this western authored book manages to avoid pretty much all of the annoying nonsense which has taken over most isekai. The simple fact that we can read a high quality fantasy book and not spend 200 pages on the joys of Japanese cuisine is great. We get it, you like your food, but this is fantasy not a cook book. The tropes in isekai light novels are getting to the point of unreadability and this book actually has adult characters which is a huge plus vs the 9 to 15 year old combat genius characters who are overly young for no reason.
About this book in particular, it is more mature and does not twist itself into a pretzel to be scared of sex or romance. I think the negative reviews must be from people who fit into the demo of wanting to read about teenage boys who hate sex for no intelligible reason in any universe. Isekai Magus is just about everything I’d want in a story with leveling progression, fascinating world building, with great detail and creativity in the mechanics. It has a casual style where you just slot into the world and things happen without overt exposition, this is a show me don’t tell me type story where you come to understand things which happen.
Truly the world and motivations people have are well thought out. It is memorable and unique where I find myself thinking about it long afterwards. It feels fresh and while it is clearly in the genre, it does not feel formulaic, stale, or like it is repeating tropes. All aspects feel intentional and well out together. This is an instant top 5 book for me. It isn’t quite as epic as my favourite 12 kingdoms classic isekai, nor is it as in detail as ascendance of a bookworm, but as an action driven world it pays enough attention to detail (get more wagons!) to be satisfying.
I feel like the author took on board all the feedback from the maturing fanbase / community to do all the things that makes this genre great and removed all the baggage and nonsense ‘comedy’ elements of people arguing / bickering about bath time out…which has never once been funny. It is a genre that seems intent on getting us to hate it with the endless lolicon nonsense presented as normal. This book takes away almost all of the garbage and leaves us with the golden fantasy book we want from the genre.

Wow big
So just found the series. This was a big starting book. Really lots to unpack. Not so much in a review. The MC Is tricked, Hooked, Shanghaid.. Either way from earth to another world that he did not know was linked. His New patron god has need of him And if he wants to get home he has to comply. Of course this new world is nothing like earth. There is magic and lots of Other sentiment creatures out of fantasy. And the driving goal is to collect zorta. This is the magical substance that's used for currency and to reduce your life and increase your levels and practically everything. In consequently god's need it as well. As the book progresses And our MC goes from 0 to hero He has to learn about how the Zorta and the world Inter works. Of course I was usual there's a lot more going on but he's been told about. Of course there is a lot more going on than nobody's been told about. So quite the adventure. The MC is constantly underestimated which he prefers Basically has to scramble scavenge and grow. To add to his initial troubles the MC is a forbidden class where he lands. And he is hunted pretty much from the start. The class is rare Fairly powerful of course everybody is hunting him and he has to learn it on his own. This is a good start to a series Which is a lot of fun but again very long. Lots of details. Some romance nothing in depth And no Harem. I will be reading the second book..

To add to his initial troubles the MC is a forbidden class where he lands. And he is hunted pretty much from the start. The class is rare Fairly powerful of course everybody is hunting him and he has to learn it on his own. This is a good start to a series Which is a lot of fun but again very long. Lots of details. Some romance nothing in depth And no Harem. I will be reading the second book..

DNF at 44. % Not for me.
Young gullible man who has a preposterous name for his little johnson gets sex-trapped into a fantasy world.
The author seems to have quite a fascination regarding the main female sexual attributes. The fact that the women in these books are rather sexually aggressive and swoon all over the protagonist hints that the story is intended for young adult men.
Reading the story was quite a slog for me. The motivation of the protagonist is lacking. There is no big threat to the world and the "hero" is mostly acting out of self interest. There are no big secrets or mysteries (so far).
The concept that killing creatures or persons gives something that can be used as XP, to power spells, as money or to make yourself younger is fresh but seems ultimatively flawed.
I was no fan of the necromancer character who faints whenever one! of his minions dies and all the super specialized mages that only can do two spells in a fight. The protagonist has strange morals. On the one hand he goes on and on about a dead suicidal drug addicted mouse but has no problem about killing other sentinents later on to turn them into undead.
I found it irritating that one of the main male characters has a female sounding name which always left me confused until i remembered who he was again.

The story is ok. It uses several stereo types that drive a lot of readers to DNF's. Idiot main character that every female wants to bed and manages to kill everything he's faced with even though he has the lowest combat rating possible. Every race deems themselves better than any other and threatens death upon you when entering their city if you sneeze wrong but oh come back we love to trade. and so on. I've said this part before, please please please pick your narrator with care. The gentleman narrating this book sounds like he's reading to a 3rd grade class in a library. I mean really is he auditioning for a children's tv show. I would recommend reading a hard copy instead. If you do listen to the audiobook put it on 1-1/4 speed at minimum. There is just enough substance to the book that makes me want to see how it turns out so i'll give it a grudging 3 stars.

The story is boring to mildly interesting. The particular powers of the MC are inherently boring because he pulls in other characters to do most of the fighting, which makes for a lot of undeveloped characters that are fodder for his fights. Very hard to care about a story when so many of the characters are red shirts.
The interesting part of the story was the system of magic and Gods fighting for power.
Wouldn't recommend. The way the author writes about women was too off-putting. Definitely cringeworthy. Reads like it was written by a porn addict who's never had a real life interaction with a girl. The female characters are SO bad. Literally just there to for sex appeal. Not that hard to treat the female characters as if they are real people.

First experience with this author. Did this one audiobook.
Two readers for this one, one male and one female. They were pretty good. Did not find them annoying.
This is a long book. 36 hours of audio. Yikes.
Overall the story is good. The mains are quite enjoyable and the minors add the obligatory humour and helping hands. No lack of action and definitely some quality kills per minute. There are a few spots of slowness that left me a little numb but i guess you get that in all books.
Is it good enough to go looking for book 2. Maybe. I have a few more books on the pile to get through first.

The reviews I read are pretty divided on this book. Some are saying it's "the worst", while others are saying it's what other books should follow... I just hope it's good.
This was a journey of ups and downs, but I enjoyed it. So many things happened that I should have taken note of, but didn't. I will definitely be reading the sequel.
I wish more self published authors paid attention and made sure their books ran smoothly throughout. It seems so many forgo continuity checks and plot holes.

Enjoyable read
I started reading this when not feeling well which always makes it hard to get in to this kind of book for me. The author Han Yang builds likeable characters with an impossible mission for a god. Pay the currency to bring his parents back and live on a sandy beach. You got ta know that deals from the gods always have catches and the hero’s always has challenges. Shizzley deals and betrayals, someone who can laugh and keep the darkness away. Thanks for an enjoyable Read Han Yang.

If you like focus on plot over women, so the MC doesn't act like a idiot who focuses on women to make all mistakes and works for a Goddess he should be hating because..'reasons' aka so he can get it from her female followers. Then this is not for you.
The MC as everyone states, is a moron. Following whats in his pants to make horrible mistakes. The world, the mechanics all are interesting yet it's ruined by the main focus being erotica rather than plot.

Excellent Saga
I really enjoyed reading this story. It starts with a Mc I didn’t like. A stereotype California dude who was a player. The book description of a womanizer is false because he straight up didn’t lie about what he wanted. His non ambition would have women who only wanted one thing from him anyway. Once he gets to the new planet he grows up nicely and I want more story.

I loved that this book was not rushed in any way. We got to see a lot of the MC’s trials and what made him so competent in this world. The concept of a healer/necromancy was novel to me but created an interesting build for the MC. There was a little bit of everything: romance, crunch LitRPG mechanics, witty banter, betrayal and a lot of action. There is good world building and a unique experience mechanic for leveling.
