Jay Leigh is an author (duh) as well as a voracious reader of primarily M/M romance novels filled with all sorts of goodies like action, suspense, emotions, and spice. Lots of spice.

Plot twist: It’s actually just three mischievous raccoons in a trench coat fueled by levels of caffeine known to cause cancer in the state of California. Good thing they live in New York!

JAY!!! You are such an incredibly talented author. I am so honored to know you and get to chat with you about your books. Thank you for always indulging me.

Call it fate or serendipity or sheer luck, but the real me hiding beneath the darkness saw the real him trapped under the weight of his.

Here, we have 23-year-old identical twins Mason and Shiloh. They haven't had much growing up and have not had an easy life up to this point in time. So, imagine their surprise when fancy attorneys from New York show up and tell them their long-lost father has died and left part of his hotel empire to them.

Trenton/Trey works for the hotel business that the twins inherited. He’s a sassy Frenchman. Unbeknownst to each other, Trey and Shiloh have a random anonymous encounter at the local gay club...

With another wink, he licked his lips as if I were some sort of dessert before pulling my jeans and boxers down just far enough to gain access.

...which proves awkward the following morning when they recognize each other on the way to the board meeting.

Shiloh is such a sweetheart! He's a virgin and shy. He’s extremely hard on himself and feels worthless. He has a hard time speaking up and has difficulty with some things because he's dyslexic, which he’s very embarrassed about. Due to this, Mason tends to take the lead and speak for them both.

It’d all disappear soon anyway, just like every other thing we’d managed to scrape together over the years. Nothing ever lasted. Especially not for me. All of this was too good to be true, and I was the last person on earth who deserved it in the first place.

Trey is not one for repeats with sexual partners, but something about Shiloh calls to him and Shiloh is equally enamored with Trey so they decide to give dating a shot.

We kissed until we couldn’t breathe and then kissed some more before he finally pulled away, wickedly grinning. Underneath the innocence, beneath all the complex layers of this man, hid a positively wild animal. I wanted to be all of his firsts. I wanted to be his one and only. But I had a feeling he would be the man who would ruin me for anyone else in the world.

When these two come together, they are HOT!

Every thrust of his cock into my body put another piece of my soul back together again, and I clung to him, swallowed up in the swirling chaos of our desperate need and aching desire. It was no longer fucking. Non. It was salvation and penance and promise wrapped up in the most transcendent act of lovemaking I’d ever experienced.

Shiloh, Mason and Trey are all dealing with A LOT. There is trauma galore and addiction issues. Lots of obstacles and therapy. Somehow though, through all of this, Trey and Shiloh come together and find love. I enjoyed all the side characters in this. Mags was particularly wonderful.

“Shiloh Corbel, are you secretly learning French?” “Oui. A little. You can’t laugh at my accent,” I warned, nudging his nose with mine. “I found this audio program. I want to say sweet, beautiful things to you.”

The ending was very therapeutic for a number of reasons. I thoroughly enjoyed this and look forward to reading more about Mason in the next book.

*** I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest review. ***

Oh, wow. This book.
I am a very emotional and empathetic person, I feel everything fiercely, so this book broke me into a million tiny pieces, and then put me back together.

Although there are a few funny moments and a couple spicy ones 🥵, this is not a rom-com. It is not a light read, but it is so worth it. Because after all the crying and suffering, the most beautiful HEA is delivered.

The writing is splendid, I knew Jay Leigh could write after reading her first book, but this is next level beautiful. I need to warn you though, the book deals with emotional trauma, addiction, mental health issues, neglect, anxiety and low self esteem, among other heavy topics. Yes, that's a lot, but the amount of healing happening in this book is spectacular. I've never read a book like this before, where all these problems the MCs are going through aren't miraculously resolved or pushed under the rug, but rather meticulously and carefully dealt with. I appreciate that so much.

This is the story of Shiloh and Trey, two broken men, battling their own type of demons, two flawed human beings that find each other at the perfect time and discover the power of healing. And love!! 😁

Shiloh and his twin brother, Mason, have been dealt a horrible hand. They are living day to day, not being able to afford their next meal, working tirelessly to survive in the aftermath of a broken family. These boys' past made my heart ache, there is a lot of emotional trauma happening that made me ugly cry. When they are told that they have inherited a hotel chain empire from their father (whom they've never met because they were told he left them), everything changes. They have to uproot their life and move to New York, and so they are thrust in a world they know nothing about. Their insecurities and feelings of inadequacy were gut wrenching, especially in Shiloh's case. He is dyslexic, but he's never been helped to understand his situation and deal with it properly.

Trey has been working for Shiloh's father for ten years. He is dealing with his boss's death, personally mourning his loss, but also taking care of his widow and running the business. Trey is another kind of broken, he's been neglected most of his life, sent away by his family, so he's very closed off, trying to keep everyone away. He's extremely insecure, with very low self esteem. He's dealing with addiction and depression, but not in a healthy way. He is also a French, tattooed, dark haired badass, so excuse me while I swoon. 🥰

This is a character driven story. The plot revolves around their lives and how they get to meet, get to know each other, explore their connection and finally how they deal with their problems. There are a a couple of things happening plot wise, but I think the star of the book is the character development. Both MCs transition from feeling inadequate and unworthy of love, to adults who understand their worth and purpose.

The side characters are amazing. Once again we get the found family trope, one of my favourite things in books. I particularly liked Owen and Jez, how quickly they adopt Shiloh into their little circle, making him feel appreciated and wanted. Maggs is another character that plays a huge role in both MCs' lives.

One of my favourite parts of the book was the twins' relationship. Shiloh and Mason are so in tune with each other, but the fierceness with which Mason protects Shiloh had my heart melting. These boys are so precious.

I think what I appreciated most was the tender way in which every sensitive subject was dealt with. It's a slippery slope where you can easily swerve into full out cliché mode, but Jay Leigh's approach to addiction and mental health problems is so raw and real, and unbelievably... healthy. So thank you for that.

That epilogue was adorable. We love a happy ending!! 🥰

This story is all around beautiful and heartwarming. Jay broke my heart multiple times throughout the book, but also filled it with so much joy and contentment. I won’t go into details, but just know that the ending was perfect 🥰.

At the beginning of the book, the Corbel twins meet with lawyers who inform them of their inheritance from their estranged father and the stipulations that come with it. They upend their lives and move to New York to live in the inherited hotel.

Shiloh, one of the twins, was an absolute sweet heart. From the very beginning I just wanted to hold and hug him. The twins did not have an easy childhood, and Shiloh struggles with anxiety and insecurities about his worth. I loved how he found comfort in the simple things and did not let his newly acquired fortune go to his head. He was down to heart, shy and a genuinely gentle soul. One word that comes to mind when I think about Shiloh is precious 🥰.

Everyone should be so lucky as to find themselves a man who looked at them like Shiloh looked at cheeseburgers.

Trey works at the hotel and has a close relationship with the widowed wife of the twin’s father, Mags. He met Shiloh in a club on his first night in New York, and their second meeting afterward was what I would call a disaster 😅. Trey deals with obstacles of his own, he is flawed like everyone else, has a sassy attitude, but loves so damn hard when given the chance. The connection and love he has with Mags was what endeared him to me in the beginning of the book.

I liked his rough edges and attitude more than I wanted to admit. He was made out of anomalies. He often spoke such tender words and yet routinely sniped little barbs. Tattoos covered his skin, yet it was still so soft and pale. His hands read ‘stay back,’ but they touched me in ways that screamed, ‘come closer.’ And I couldn’t keep mine off of him.

Shiloh and Trey’s relationship didn’t have an easy beginning. Shiloh had zero experience, and Trey had never been in a relationship, so I loved seeing them learn to be together, how shy and uncertain they were at first 🫠. The little touches and reassurances between them were adorable.

I loved the other characters as well, Mason (the other twin), Owen who became Shiloh’s fierce ally, Jez and Wick.

The book was very well written to broach some difficult subjects that happen in the life of the main and side characters. I appreciated the author’s care in writing about the MCs overcoming their obstacles.

Overall Opinion
Shiloh and Trey made my cry so much and I loved them to absolute bits! This was a raw and real book that showed that whilst love is so important, it doesn't solve all the problems and reading that felt so realistic and powerful. There was heavy topics in here and the author did a wonderful job handling them. Trey is our French broken boy, going through grief for his father figure and a boatload of other traumas and I loved him so much. Shiloh is our introverted boy who was raised in poverty with his twin Mason and comes into a surprise empire from their estranged father and have to up and move to NYC. There is so much healing and love that goes on and such amazing side characters, it was a world I wanted to transport to. It was angsty and real and it broke me and I would give the world to reread this again for the first time!

5 ⭐️ 3🌶

Jay Leigh came through and made a spot on my bookshelves with her sophomore book, Checking Out! It was heartfelt, realistic, steamy, and emotional. My heart was ripped out, put back in, and  beautifully stitched back up!

The way the author writes each character with such realism, you are invested from the start. Each character was realistic with many layers with human emotions & experiences. They are relatable characters in many ways. It deeply affected me but not in a bad way at all.

Shiloh and Mason are twins that come from poverty & abuse. When lawyers come knocking, their whole world turns upside down. The father that they thought was a deadbeat left them a substantial inheritance & stakes in his business. They have to pack up and leave a small town in Ohio for New York City. I fell in love with each character, but Shiloh? The child-like innocence & his naked vulnerability have my heart. The shame, fear, and guilt Shiloh carries broke my heart. His twin, Mason, has always been the loving twin brother. He's Shiloh's voice, protector, and advocate.

In a world where they have no clue how to navigate, they each have doubts and insecurities that they may never overcome. Everything is new, big, scary, and overwhelming.

Trey has been a part of this business & family for years. He's the snotty,  frenchman, and assistant that's jealous of these twins. How dare they swoop in and steal the attention of Mags; his late boss' wife and mother figure to him. To make matters worse, what was supposed to be an anonymous hook-up turns real, really fast when Trey realizes he had this sexual encounter with his new boss, Shiloh! Trey, the one that doesn't do relationships, isn't sentimental starts falling for Shi. He has demons of his own, many insecurities, and an active addiction. Trey didn't want complications; feelings, emotions, attachments, or family, but Shiloh may change all that.

"𝑨𝒍𝒍 𝑰 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒉𝒊𝒎, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒑𝒆𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒇𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝒚𝒆𝒕 𝒔𝒊𝒎𝒍𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒍𝒚 𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒇𝒚𝒊𝒏𝒈."

When these two mc's come together, it's so beautiful. The patience, understanding, and love that they have for each other is so moving. The understanding & support that Shiloh has for Trey makes me emotional. The chemistry between them is on fire & so hot! They each have their own battles to fight in order to come together and become a family.

"𝑯𝒊𝒔 𝒖𝒏𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒅 𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒖𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒍𝒚 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒅 𝒉𝒂𝒊𝒓, 𝒇𝒍𝒖𝒔𝒉𝒆𝒅 𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒆𝒌𝒔, 𝒑𝒖𝒑𝒊𝒍𝒔 𝒃𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒏 𝒘𝒊𝒅𝒆, 𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒌𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝒈𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒏 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒓𝒆𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒅, 𝒑𝒍𝒖𝒎𝒑 𝒍𝒊𝒑𝒔. 𝑯𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒔𝒕 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑰’𝒅 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒆𝒆𝒏. “𝑭𝒖𝒄𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒍, 𝑻𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒐𝒏. 𝒀𝒐𝒖’𝒓𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒐𝒖𝒔.”

Mags; their late fathers wife, and now head of the business is embracing this new life. Showing the boys what motherly love is. I fell in love with her and the other side characters, especially Jez, Owen, and Rico.

The pace of this book was perfect. There was nothing rushed, nothing drawn out. The plot was perfectly laid out for the reader to enjoy this beautiful story of heartbreak, love, hope, & healing.

I can't properly convey the beauty of this story, but if you love hurt/comfort and hurt boys that fall in love with hurt boys, then look no further. I promise you won't be disappointed!

Happiest happy publication day 💛💛💛🎊

Checking out is probably one of the only romance novel that made me cry this much.
Anyway let’s try to review. First of all thank you so much Jay for the arc. I’m so grateful I had the privilege to cry about them before anyone else 😭. I will 100% send you my therapy bills.
The book is a dual povs, between our sweet shy boy Shiloh and our ruthless but sweet sometimes, Trey. The premise is easy : Shiloh and his twin Mason are suddenly asked to deal with their estranged dad’s empire after his passing.
They’re both not sure about this situation but decide to give it a try nonetheless. Starting their new life they meet their father’s wife, Maggie, who will help them with their new jobs. We love Maggie. And we’re finally meeting Trey. He was the right man of Marcus( the twins dad). He’s trying to deal with the grief of loosing his mentor and father figure. Also trying to deal with a whole bunch of other traumas. He’s literally a wreckage waiting to happen. That man is a mess. And I can’t explain how much I love him.
Shiloh and Trey first meeting is, heated. I won’t say more. 🥰
After their first encounter they try to navigate this new life, where they see each other almost everyday… and stuff happens
I won’t say more because it’s better to be hit with all the punches the author has in stock for us 😂 (I spent entire chapters reading through my tears, that was super fun, I highly recommend it).
I just really loved how good they were for each other but ultimately this book show that love can not solve everything and it enlightened that getting professional help is the best way to deal with a lot of issues. I liked that their problem didn’t vanish magically!
Friendship is an important part of this story, and I must say that I almost cried when Shiloh realised that he had a friend. Like. He’s the sweetest bean to ever exist and I adore him.
Owen is the mvp of the book. If you dont like him, I don’t like you 🥰.
DID I MENTION THAT TREY SPOKE FRENCH. He’s so French that even *I* your local French, doubted my french. He has an attitude and he will make it everyone else’s problem. Gosh I love him.
He ans Shiloh works so so so well together. They deserves eternal happiness and warm blanket at any moment of the day.
Anyway, as you can see I LOVED this book. I can’t wait to own my copy, I literally will shove down everyone throats. Because y’all deserves to read their story. ( also I want people to cry with me)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Jay Leigh’s sophomore novel did not disappoint. She has yet again created characters that I truly cared about as I read. I found myself thinking about them after I read. This book has many serious themes that are each treated with respect and care. Instead of just leaving our characters in despair, Leigh takes the time to emphasis the road to recovery and that things to get better. Shiloh, Mason, and Trey are so lovable that as they go through their own struggles you just want to reach through the pages and give them a hug. It is a sign of good writing.

Y’all! You need to read this one. You will not be disappointed!

Special thanks to Jay Leigh for the ARC.

So, I may have cried a few times reading this one. Shiloh and Trey are so amazing together. Their story is heartbreaking, sweet, with moments of laughter, swoon worthy moments, and love. Sweet Shiloh comes into Trey's life when he and his twin brother Mason moves to the city after the death of his estranged father. When they meet for the first time in the club, well all I'll say about their meeting is just, wow. Their relationship is definitely a slow burn, but when these guys decide they are all in their chemistry, it is just amazing.

The way Jay Leigh navigates the emotions of the obstacles and trauma these two have endured is perfection. She is able to make you feel like you are in the story by their side during these events. I was able to relate to both Shiloh and Trey on different levels. Some of the things they both live through have touched my life in some ways. I feel they were handled with care but also gives you the ability to see what it is like for them both.

I could go on and on about their story. The things I loved and what made me cry, but you really need to read their story to get the full experience. So give them the chance to share their journey with you.

Thank you, Jay Leigh, for sharing Shiloh and Trey with me. I will be looking forward to the next book.

Wowowowow!! Loved every bit of Trey's and Shi-Shi's story!

I needed Trey to come, too. I couldn't let him go. He was my teddy bear. Even if he was a little broken and battered, he was mine.

I laughed, I cried, I hurt, and I found comfort in this book. It's always sold to me when I meet two damaged souls on page. These two, with the burden of their pasts, absolutely made me fall in love. Instantly.
Checking Out is not a rom-com. It's a beautiful story about healing and self acceptance. It's a story about learning to love and being loved. And don't get me started about found family and safe space which is so needed when you have to be vulnerable.

He was mine. But in the process of making him mine, I'd given myself to him entirely.

So if you are looking for your new read, just take this one. You know, what's even better? To add Jay to your auto-buy authors' list and getting lost in her captivating stories.

Jay Leigh’s back with her sophomore release, and it does not disappoint! This fish out of water story about twin brothers who suddenly find themselves on the right side of fortune is nothing less than a gritty, raw, emotional journey. It’s devastatingly captivating and compelling with it’s unvarnished cast of genuine and utterly flawed characters, endlessly complicated situations and equally complex dynamics. It grabs your attention from the first page and doesn’t let go.

Shiloh and Mason are on their own, doing the best they can, scraping by and taking care of one another. They’ve endured a lifetime of trauma, having been failed by the system or someone at just about every turn. When their presumed deadbeat dad passes away and leaves them partial stake in his hotel dynasty, it seems like maybe - finally - their prayers have been answered. Could this be the break they need? Unfortunately, it’s true there are many things money can’t buy, and Shiloh and Mason are about to learn that lesson firsthand.

This story has so many moving parts, all of which contribute to becoming completely engrossed in what’s happening. Through Shiloh, Leigh explores several relationship dynamics: sibling (Shiloh & Mason), parental (Shiloh & each of his biological parents and Mags), and romantic (Shiloh and Trey). His relationships are fraught with complex challenges, forcing him to confront his past and present in order to carve out the future he desires. The impact isn’t unilateral, however; everyone feels the pressure caused by years of lies, deceit and coping just to get by.

Shiloh is the absolute star of this one for me. From those opening scenes, he’s so shy and vulnerable, and I wanted to wrap him up and keep him safe. He’s just so honest and good, caring and compassionate. The purest soul. If ever there’s been a character in need of a break, it’s him, and his entire character evolution is absolute genius. Trey’s also a great guy and a good match for Shi, but it took a bit longer to warm up to him. He’s clearly dealing with his own demons, and although I could understand his actions and motives, they definitely impacted my ability to trust him.

The author has provided several trigger and content warnings; the major topics are child abuse - childhood trauma & abandonment; mental health - anxiety, depression, substance abuse, addiction; grief - loss of a spouse and parent; and disability - dyslexia. Please see the book for a complete list and proceed with caution if any of these is difficult for you.

Shiloh and Mason are 23 year old identical twins, doing their best but surviving far short of even a paycheck to paycheck life. All that changes when a couple of lawyers meet with them over breakfast at Denny’s.
Their deadbeat dad has passed away, leaving an inheritance and shares in his thriving businesses providing they move to NYC and take their place on the board. Not a hardship considering how they’ve been living (even if it’s sounds to good to be true)

Trey, French but a NYer for a decade, was treated more like a son than the dead man’s actual sons. He’s taking the loss hard - Drowning sadness and keeping himself going with booze, pills, and quick hookups. Trying to give support for the widow, while barely caring for himself.

A chance nightclub meeting and miscommunication between Shiloh and Trey, has things escalating quickly to a brief anonymous encounter in the men’s room.
The next morning - before the first board meeting - there’s some identity confusion before they realize who the other is. Awkward isn’t even the word, and it gets messier before it gets better.

I live for a good dual POV, and this delivered.
Shiloh and Trey both learn how to stop checking out, and help heal their broken parts. Mason also goes through a lot, rebuilding himself. This story is full of character growth. Not always easy, but so worth the struggle. The resolution about their dad was satisfying too.
Seeing how the side characters gathered around them to build a massive caring support system was amazing, and I loved how much depth they all had. I would happily read so much more about any of them.

This is more rom-dram than my usual rom-com reads, but don’t worry there is humor in there to balancing out the heavy. And love, so much of it - familial, platonic and romantic. Serious issues the characters are dealing with include OCD, depression, alcoholism and addiction, the lasting effects of childhood trauma, abuse, and food insecurity, dyslexia without support growing up and all the frustrations that led to. I know that’s quite a list, but I feel they are handled with care and there’s excellent mental health rep - 3 cheers for therapy and another for rehab.

Shiloh and Trey’s journey is one that will break your heart and then put it back together again. There were tears, both sad and happy.
And the heat? Spicy 🔥❤️‍🔥🔥

Many thanks to the author for the ARC!

First I want to say, it’s been a long while since a found a book that has given me so much, I can’t really explain it, but when I first started the book I wasn’t sure what direction it was going to go, but once I read about Shiloh and his inner dialogue of not being worth anything, I was hooked. The words and depth of this story was so much of everything, the language used and the French was superb, the emotions of all 3 men felt like I was there with them. This wasn’t a MMM book Incase I give that impression, but the brothers were twins and very close so we get to see the bond between them and it’s very much part of this book.

When you read the trope “broken MC’s” that’s exactly what I want, not some poor version of it, and I tell you, Jay delivered in bucket loads, these men all broken, all suffering, all needing love.
I wanna mention the side characters too, they were amazing, all of them played a big part in the story and I’m looking forward to seeing some more of them!!

Shiloh was the quieter twin, the one suffering the most, he needed his brothers love and reassurance, his support when he has no words. He needed to be nurtured and cared for but also given space to learn and grow. He didn’t realise he would also find them things in Trey.

Trey was a sassy French man who was in a lot of pain, but over the years he found ways to hide it, but when the shy, blushing brother who wanted more from him, made him want to be better, he realised he needed to give up his old life so he could have a better new one with Shiloh, but things are always easier said than done.

This book is going to the top of my list for best read this year. Thank you Jay for showing us so many mental health and addictions that lots of us go through too, and also how you can heal from them with proper care and treatment.

Trigger warning of addiction and mental health

Checking out is the first book in the City Boys Never Sleep Series by Jay Leigh.

They say that the sophomore novel is the hardest. That not only do readers have expectations but it will continue to give them an idea of what to expect moving forward.

If Jay Leigh’s sophomore novel is any indication of what’s to come, then count me in 💙💙 I’m convinced of the talent of this diverse author who is slowly but surely making a Well-deserved name for herself.

This was such a beautiful story of a chance meeting that turns into healing and love. I’m not gonna spoil anything but I was more than once moved to tears 🥹🥹

I absolutely loved the dynamic between Trey and Shiloh. The hurt/comfort trope was beautifully depicted in scenes that just pulled at my heart strings. With that being said, it was still a very romantic book which will satisfy those readers who love a great HEA 💙💙

My only problem now will be to wait for the next book in the Series 🥺🥺

So, here we go:
Plot: 💙💙💙💙💙
Steam: 🔥🔥
Angst: 😰😰
Swoon: 🫠🫠🫠🫠

Bonus points: the FRENCH! It Never gets old 💋💋

Please read the author’s TWs and be mindful of possible triggers

This was a double hurt/comfort story that hurt sooo good! These poor broken boys deserved the comfort they got from each other! Shiloh and Trey worked so well together and their feelings and inner thoughts felt so real and resonated with me, I loved and cared about them both 🥹 There’s sort of a 3rd act event but even that was only so they could get back to one another and be better for each other. This story is also very much about Shiloh and his twin Mason and them figuring out how to lean on each other in a healthy way, not out of necessity because they only have one another. I loved that aspect of the story just as much as the love story. Even almost 2 months after reading this book I still felt the need to review because that’s how much the story stuck with me. This book should be wayyy more popular.

Amazing & Emotional

I was warned that I may cry while reading this and I definitely did cry a few times. It was all worth it though to this amazing story. I'm looking forward to book two.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

This book... What can I say. I am obsessed with Shiloh. I will do whatever I can do to protect that boy. The connection he and Mason had as brothers/twins was so beautiful to read. Each brother felt like they needed the other in some way... Shiloh to hide behind for various, all worthy reasons and Mason became dependent on always being the leader for Shiloh so he could never really relax... But their past is why they did it and that nearly broke me.

Trey, my Frenchman with an attitude problem. Who knew he could be so sweet and protective to our very own shy Shiloh. His own self-recovery of addiction and his future diagnosis fit him and how he was neglected in a different way from the twins, but it didn't hurt any less. I love that he wanted to change for Shiloh, even if he knew he might not ever get to be with him. Shiloh came in and turned his world off its axis and although it scared Trey, it was the best thing to ever happen to him and he knew it.

This book was beautiful and breathtakingly sad in the most cathartic of ways. Shiloh might not play for my team, but Trey and I might have to have a friendly chat, because that shy country boy is someone I want to protect at all costs. He is MINE.

This book put me through all the emotions.

This follows Shiloh and Trenton as they go from having a steamy meet cute at a bar to becoming co workers in a million dollar company.

Shiloh and his twin brother haven’t had the best life growing up but things change for them in the matter of one meeting at a diner.

This leads to them having their world flipped upside down and seeing both of them take it in their own way was so interesting with them being twins.

Shiloh and Trenton felt so real to me. They had real personal struggles and ways they coped with things and I even though they found their person in each other, that wasn’t enough to fix them. I loved how therapy was handled and I loved how motivating they were with each other.

Trenton was such a vibe with his style and sexy French accent and Shiloh was just so sweet but troubled.

Their chemistry was off the charts from page one and didn’t let up and I was LIVING FOR IT!! 🥵

Overall this book was a great read and I highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars 🌟

All vibes, no brains, folks. Flailview incoming...

Hurt boys falling in love with hurt boys. Hurt boys finding home, family, and love. Hurt boys doing the work to heal. Hurt boys supporting each other's growth. Hurt boys still hurt but able to move on together and learn from the hurt. (Just so we're clear, these are actually whole-a$s men, but "boys" sounded better. Don't @ me.)

Look. This book made me sob. Hard. Alone at night. 🤣 I regret nothing but my lack of tissues for my eyes and for... other clean-up. 👀 (This book is hot. 🥵)

Shiloh is a precious little love, and all I want to do is hug him forever, buy him fancy peas, and let him decorate my apartment.

Trey is a sarcastic Frenchman, and I would like him to be my best friend and talk down to me a bit and put me in my place. Also, I love an emo boy. Please and thank you.

On another note, if Owen doesn't get a happy ending (book or handy, tbh) I'll be v upset. 🤣 Someone love that boy. He is wonderful and a JOY.

Mason...? What's his deal? Do I get to know? HALP!

OH. And Mags. A f*cking beautiful character. So very loving and full of wisdom.

The journey in this book is painful but so friggin worth it.

PLEASE pre-order this book. It comes out 6/29 and if you don't read it, you're friggin missing out.

Mental health, dyslexia, substance abuse, and physical/psychological abuse. This book tackles some tough topics and does not shy away. Check the CW.

I enjoyed every page in this book. I find myself still thinking of this story, Leigh's characters felt like they'd become close friends as I read. Shiloh, Trey, Mason and Margot will always hold a special place in my heart. There are serious themes in this story: addiction, depression, and learning disabilities. Leigh gives us hope though by showing that with help things do get better. The characters are all so lovable, I'd love to give them a hug. This book is a perfect blend of cute and spicy romance, with portions that tug at your heart strings.

Special thanks to Jay Leigh for the ARC.

"His warmth, his soft breathing, and the solidity of him in my arms were more intoxicating than any combination of drugs and alcohol I’d ever consumed, and I wanted to ride this high for as long as possible.”
- Checking Out

Thank you, Jay Leigh, for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Tropes: Forced Proximity, Opposites Attract, Workplace
Representation: LGBTQ (Gay), Mental Health, Dyslexia
Spice Scale: 🌶🌶🌶🌶
CW: Childhood trauma, neglect, grief, addiction, death of a parent, homophobia, injury, depression, and anxiety

Although different in tone from her debut, Checking Out is just as captivating and takes you on a journey of loss, recovery, and hope despite difficult circumstances.
As a highly empathetic person, this story definitely put me through the emotional ringer. The characters have their demons, like childhood trauma and neglect, grief, addiction, and depression and anxiety. However, Leigh handles it beautifully in a refreshing and comforting way. Too often in romance, larger issues seem to be either magically fixed by a romantic relationship or ignored once the characters get their happily ever after. And though, yes, Shiloh and Trey get their HEA, it is not at the expense of their healing. It is because of it. It is because they take the time to confront their demons head-on and heal that they can move forward together in a healthy, loving, and truly inspiring.
Unsurprisingly, given how much I adored the entire Rainbow Brigade in Whisper into the Night, I fell in love with the entire cast of characters in Checking Out. Shiloh was an absolute sweetheart, and I loved his relationship with his fiercely protective twin, Mason. Trey was a perfect mix of compelling and swoony (I am such a sucker for a dark-haired, French-speaking hero).
Checking Out is a truly beautifully complex story that stuck with me for days after staying up way too late reading it. I can’t wait to see what comes next from this universe and from Jay’s writing.

What a gem of a book! Jay Leigh weaved a beautiful tale of all kinds of love giving you strength to face your demons. The author gives us complex, layered, defined MCs and fleshed out supporting characters in a lushly controlled pace to engross us fully in the world they created.

Expect:
- rags to riches done so very well
- Virgin MC
- Hurt comfort
- Opposites attract
- Found family
- Strong sibling bonds
- Cathartic closures

Shiloh is sweet, hurt, traumatised, cheeky, strong, shy, loyal, loving - he opens up your heart as you start his story. Trey is lost, raw, resilient, loyal, lonely, numbed, hurting. Their story starts with a high heat “one time only” encounter but there is no denying the fast developing attachment where they find places in each other to click and lock into.

I especially loved how the story unfolds in the most unpredictable yet believable way of reaching tense precipices of conflict and triggering change in self awareness or relational dynamics for the MCs. It’s my favourite way of reading angst! I also loved the gorgeously emotional therapeutic conversations of hope and self acceptance!

The supporting characters were some of the best I have read! I loved Jez, Owen, Wick, Guy, Margot. Mason and Shiloh’s beginnings and dynamic managed to make me cry so many times! I hope we see a story for each one of them

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Swoon: ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥.5
Angst: ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹
Humour: 🤣🤣🤣

CW: Childhood trauma, abandoment, neglect, substance abuse, cptsd, loss of a spouse, grief, references of physical and emotional abuse, homophobia, loss of a parent.

Shiloh and Mason are twins who have had it rough growing up. One morning over breakfast at Denny’s they find out they are heirs to a large hotel and entertainment company. Unsure if it’s a cruel joke or serious, they trek to New York to see what comes from it.

Agonisingly shy Shiloh struggles with their new life, made more difficult when he encounters Trey one night in a club. Trey is immediately enraptured by Shiloh, but this is complicated when he discovers the next day that Shiloh is his new boss.

This story takes you on a journey of self acceptance and recovery from trauma. While also exploring the developing relationship between Shiloh and Trey.

Throw in some family conflict with the well intentioned Mason, and the discovery of a new found family in Mags, Owen and Jez, and you have a well structured cast of supporting characters.

Of course there is a lot of spice thrown in, but it doesn’t take anything away from the story, if anything it helps to build it out, to show the growth between Shiloh and Trey.

Then there’s the dynamic of Shiloh and Mason having to adjust from having nothing, to suddenly not having to worry about where their next meal will come from and the mental struggle that comes from this adjustment.

I really enjoyed reading this, and it definitely has a lot of emotional moments in it!

Jay really did me in with this one. If you know me, you know I thrive on a good enemies to friends to lovers trope. Throw in a set of twins who are fiercely protective of each other and an inheritance that includes millions in New York and I’m hooked.

Shiloh and Mason have spent their entire 23 years slumming it and struggling to get by. Growing up with a mother and stepfather who were both addicts and never knowing their father steeled them to world but also softened their hearts to each other. One day, two lawyers show up on their door step telling them they’ve inherited their fathers New York empire. So off they go chasing dreams they only ever thought to exist to other people. Board meetings, running a business, learning to let the world in, and opening your heart to people are lessons to be learned by the Corbel twins. Shiloh meets Trey in an unexpected, head spinning way. Mason gets to eat pizza every night. A mother they never had is found, friends they could only dream of, and a life fully of scary, new beginnings is what checking out is all about. This was one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. I love Shiloh with my whole heart y’all. This book releases 06/29/23 on Kindle and Kindle unlimited and you NEED it. Thank you Jay for letting me having early access to your work

wonderful

Such a wonderfully touching story. All children of broken homes would wish for this to happen, for someone to sweep in with an inheritance the same way this started. But the saying that not all the glitters is good is true. What an amazing journey these characters went through and what an beautiful and heartfelt adventure one the country mouse met the city mouse. Thank you for a beautifully told story and new characters to love

WOW.
Can we say over hyped?
This book was not great.
I liked the premise well enough, but it was truly done so poorly I couldn't get over it.
Just pick one thing.
Do you want a drug and alcohol addiction? A sex addiction? A controlling alpha-male type? Do you want your virgin to be blushing and shy or confident and experimental? Do you want him to be smart or dumb? Are the characters co workers or next door neighbors? Are you running the company in interim after the CEO's death or are you an over paid assistant who everyone pities and treats like a surrogate son?
JUST. PICK. SOMETHING.
All those things I listed.... those contradictions... you see them up there? RE READ THOSE.
Now. imagine this:
The above descriptions, describe the main characters.
The author threw too many things at me while I was reading and instead of making me care more, it made me frustrated. Frustrated with the characters, frustrated with the plot, frustrated with the entire book.
It was overly sexual, and not in a good way. The broken French grated on my effin nerves. Having to hear about how dumb Shiloh thought he was one more time only for everyone to basically confirm what he was thinking in the first place was really annoying.

just overall. not good.

At about the 25% mark of Checking Out I was in awe. I can’t believe this is only her second novel.
Twins Shiloh and Mason learn over Denny’s Grand Slams that the man they considered a deadbeat dad has left them a fortune. They just need to move to NYC as a condition of their inheritance. Although identical, Shiloh is quiet, insecure, while Mason is bold and confident enough for both of them.
Trenton (Trey) Guillebeaux was the right hand man of their father, and grieving the loss of a father figure.
He and Shiloh have an intense encounter before they know who the other is. Their journey to friends, then lovers, is tentative, tender, and shows a surprisingly sweet side of brusque Trey. Together they’re sizzling.
I love prickly men who can’t use their words when facing inconvenient feelings, but show they care in other ways. Who’d have though a trip to Whole Foods could be foreplay?
Trey - this beautiful, broken (and French, mon Dieu!) man wanted love as much as he feared it. Good lord, I loved him! Even as he encouraged Shiloh to have open communication, he was hiding secrets of his own.
And Shiloh - watching him come out of his shell was so satisfying. Having the courage to ask for what he wants, from not just Trey, is powerful.
At some point, all this loss and trauma has to get out. Used to it being he and Shiloh against the world, Mason resents Trey. After one terrible night when everything comes to a head, they all realize they need help. I like how damn hard they all work to get better. And that saying “I love you” isn’t a magic wand making childhood trauma and addiction instantly disappear.
The little moments as the twins adjust to their new life hint at how awful their childhood was. The secondary characters were amazing. Margot - the mom they all needed. Owen and Jez - when Shiloh realizes he finally has friends of his own, that almost broke me. And Wick - more of him please.
The epilogue, with a HEA that will have you smiling at how far Shiloh and Trey have come, was everything you’d hope for.
Thank you Jay for letting me read an ARC of this incredible novel. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
