Five years ago, David Burroughs was a dedicated stay-at-home father to his three year old son, Matthew. Living in a nice suburban house on an idyllic cul de sac, it seemed that life was pretty good for both him and his surgeon wife, Cheryl. That is, until he woke up in the middle of the night to an ominous silence. Exploring the house, he found Matthew bludgeoned to death in his very own bed.
As the police started to investigate, all attention was focused on finding the monster who would harm a young child. Before he realized it, however, David found the police department’s sights set directly on him. Devastated by Matthew’s death, he couldn’t bother with protesting his innocence as he was first charged and then convicted with the very crime that had stolen his soul. After all, Matthew was dead.
Half a decade into his lifetime sentence, David has distanced himself from everyone in his life that once mattered to him. No longer getting any visitors, he’s surprised one day when his now ex-wife’s sister, Rachel demands to see him. In her possession is a photograph that, if true, could change everything. For on the edge of the frame is an eight year old boy that bears a startling resemblance to his supposedly dead son, Matthew.
Determined to get to the bottom of the truth now that David is certain that Matthew is actually alive, he attempts the impossible—a prison escape. Only one thing matters to him now—finding Matthew and discovering what really happened all those years ago. Hopefully, at the same time he’ll manage to clear his own name. But with an equally determined FBI agent on his tail, will David be able to piece it all together to learn the truth before he ends up back in prison—or dead?
Oh. My. God. After watching the Netflix series based on Fool Me Once, I knew that I just had to get my hands on one of Coben’s novels. Needless to say, I Will Find You was exactly what I hoped for when I first learned of the author’s startling genius. Filled to the brim with deep-seated lies, well-hidden secrets, and one altogether epic game of cat-and-mouse, I was won over completely by this dynamite hole in one.
Told via multiple POVs that read much like an omniscient perspective, the plot was simply sublime. An adrenaline-fueled drive from beginning to end that kept me on the edge of my seat, there wasn’t a moment where the action let up. So much so that it was difficult to gauge when the snowballing suspense ended and the climax began. Throw in the head-snapping twists and hairpin turns and my love for Coben was sudden and sure.
As for the characters, I was particularly fond of David and the FBI agent in charge. The former felt true-to-life with his undying love for his son while the the latter was a far cry from a bumbling investigator. Typically in books of this kind, the detective or FBI agent simply doesn’t have a clue. With this one, however, he and his perfectly matched partner seemed just a step behind their prey in this ultimate battle of wits.
All said and done, with palpable tension and acutely timed reveals, I Will Find You took me on the ride of my life. To be frank, between the snarky banter and intricate plot, there just wasn’t much not to love. An expertly engineered, well-written novel, this storyline was like watching a blockbuster film. Perfect for fans of Charlie Donlea, this book is not one to be missed. Now my only problem is deciding which Coben novel to grab next. Rating of 5 stars.
