Phenomenun: A splatter-comedy musical

Rate this book
When a busload of nuns from the Happy Jesus Nunnery and Home for Lost Children crashes into a vat of experimental toxic sludge, things will get weird for Janitor Matthew Carter.
After being bitten by a semi-liquified nun who looks similar to that melted bloke from Robocop, Matt's DNA merges with that of the toxic-infused sister.
Something inside him begins to change.
Something that can react when sin occurs.
Something that is a Phenomenun.
Featuring: Nuns. A ukulele. A hungry dog. People who break into song for no apparent reason.
Phenomenun is a tale of friendship, revenge, and the consequences of blasphemy.
Phenomenun is from the mind of Mark MJ Green, author of Abortus and Birdsong. It is not recommended for the easily offended or those who take things too seriously.

In black and white
here she comes
She will judge you for what you’ve done
If you’re a sinner
you can’t outrun
Beware the judgement of Phenomenun

Bald, bearded and bumbling, Mark likes the spooky side of life and things that go bump in the night. Although that's usually him wandering into something, as he didn't bother to turn a light on.

Mark writes horror stories in a variety of styles within the genre and enjoys spending time with his family - including his dog, who may, or may not, be demonic.
He's also a bit of a nerd and when he hasn't got his face buried in a book can be found playing video games and board games.

Take one, Mr Potato Head. Attach his angry eyes - preferably placing one of them at a slightly different angle to the other. Affix a beard and leave the head barren of growth.
Congratulations. You now have your very own Mark M.J. Green.

I loved the enthusiasm that Mark Green brought to this project. As someone who took more than 20 years to develop my first book, I understand the creative process and appreciate his similar efforts here. So, as the title implied, this was just a bizarre and silly ride. Each page brought its own sort of insanity, whether an elderly nun diddling with her crusty minge, two radioactive creatures battling each other, gory bar fights, or any of the other insanity contained in these pages. And, yes, there was music. The author did combine genres here and it, mostly, worked. The playful banter between Matt and his friends was a highlight for me. The runtime of this could have been cut back a bit, streamlining the more entertaining plot points and bits. But, it was still very fun and further showcased Mark Green's creativity.

4.5 ⭐️ If Mark Green has wrote it then I want to read it . From abortus that left me wide eyed to Birdsong that left me hysterical. Phenomenun is just as it says a splatterpunk comedy with a musical aspect . Sister Agatha is trying to get poor Billy a heart transplant . Carter is mad he didn’t get the job he was aiming for and wants revenge . Matt is a janitor and got Carter’s job at the the toxclear facility . Until sister Agatha and her others sisters collide with Carter at the toxclear facility and Matt tries to assist in cleaning up . This was a short , funny and equally extreme read. I went in a bit skeptical but wound up loving the sisters , Matt and his bar friends . Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys extreme with some seriously funny moments.

Go read Phenomenun: A Splatter- Comedy Musical by Mark Green right now! I laughed more while reading this than I have reading anything else all year. It's so funny. Green's prose is comedy gold in this one. It's as ridiculous and awesome, as it is brutal and bloody!
I know we've all heard of a werewolf, but have you heard of a werenun? Me either, until now, and I'm so glad that I have!
Poor Matt is just trying to do his job as a janitor when he tries to help clean up a disaster involving a mysterious bright green toxic sludge when he accidentally gets bit by a nun who had already fallen in said sludge. What follows next is one weird event after another, combined with a tale of friendship, justice, and a lot of people who break into song for no apparent reason. It's fantastic fun!

Ok, so this had me howling with laughter right from the off….an absolutely hysterical and utterly gross read! Billed as a "splatter-comedy musical" I wasn't sure what to expect, but that's exactly what you get, splatter, comedy and music! This will have you laugh-vomiting the whole way through, and the songs are genius!😂🤢 I hope there will be an album release alongside this book! 🤘

Mother Superior Agatha! What can I say about Mother Superior Agatha? She is quite the character, let's put it that way! And like any woman, she has needs, though hers are quite specific….and hilarious….and gross!

Carter has received a very much unwanted letter, he's really not happy and he's determined to make someone pay!!

Matt is confused after starting a new job as a janitor, but things soon become clear, kinda….

And when all of their paths cross, utter chaos ensues and leaves Matt feeling somewhat different!

This was like a Carry On film or Blackadder, only more extreme! A mental musical in book form! There were some stomach churning and very vivid descriptions/imagery in this book, fuck me did I squirm in places, and I was on the verge of vomiting several times! With equal measures of hilarity and horror this was one of the most entertaining things I've read in a long time, if not EVER!! I went from crying with laughter one minute, to almost bringing up my lunch the next! There were so many laugh out loud moments and sooooooooo many bodily fluids!!

This was a one sitting read that was completely immersive and addictive and really well written! I've never read a musical before, but this worked and it was a hell of a lot of Nun fun! Revenge like Nun you've ever seen before!! (I'll stop with the Nun puns now.. 😂)

I loved all the familiar names and references too, although I dont think Ill ever be able to look Kelvin in the face again….😲

*BEWARE THE JUDGEMENT OF PHENOMENUN!!* 💜✝️💜

A great concept for a splatter book. If Mark ever decides to write musicals for the stage, he’ll go far. The lyrics are hilarious!

This book is for anyone who grew up (as I did) loving the schlockier side of the horror genre. Films like Street Trash, Re-animator and the Toxic Avenger series spring to mind when reading Phenomenun. Throw in a few witty musical numbers and you've got yourself a bona fide splatter musical.
I'm not easily freaked out, but there's a chapter that will have anyone in possession of male reproductive equipment curling up into a protective ball and desperately trying to will themself into their happy place.
Grab this book and, to quote the tagine from Wayne's World, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll hurl.

I almost find it hard to believe, that the author of this novel, is the same one who wrote The heart-wrenching "Birdsong". As beautiful and thought provoking as Birdsong was, Phenomenun is equally full of nonsense, hilarity, and gore! It's been a long time since I've literally laughed out loud while reading a book. But I definitely made it up for it with this one.

Can I just say what an epic read, disgusting as all hell. But bloody genius how Mark infused Splatter Horror with grotesque Comedy and Musical whimsy. Right from the off we meet a very sexually deprived Mother Superior Agatha. Entering into a truly uncomfortable scene with what can only be described as the equivalent of Only-Priests. To be interrupted by Sister Woolley, with some good news about a new heart for little Billy. Who is little Billy you ask? Well you will sure as hell find out. In the form of a song! Courtesy of Sister Danika of the Immaculate Womb (I shit you not, that's her title). Of course being around this sound of music style production has already taken its toll on little Timmy. As he sits and begs for death a dick in a jaguar plunges the bus into a death roll, right into a Toxic waste dump. That is when all the fun REALLY begins. With musical acts that marry aspects of the sound of music and the awesome vibes of Repo, the Genetic Rock Opera.
I mean not for Matt Carter the Janitor, newly appointed waste management supervisor. Ends up taking in his first horrifying accident on the job and is dragged into a whole big mess. He morphs into something very unusual, a sorta toxic Avenger super nun. Also, what's black, white, and red all over? Well, you're about to find out! This story mixes the art of musical comedy with aspects of horror. Which will make Troma fans happy and fans of musicals giddy with glee. This story takes all the twists, turns, and messed-up angles it can manage. The story itself is addictive and disgusting in parts, not to mention Mark's funny-as-hell moments. Especially as he adds his creative charm by speaking to the author throughout the story. We know you want this to be a full-on musical comedy for stage and I'm here to tell you. You have my vote.

Splitter Splatter Nunnery Gory Matter!!!

This story is about a guy called Matt who gets involved in an incident that involves toxic sludge. Imagine it getting into your system, with an extra ingredient of Nunnery delight, and your body starts to change. In between, you have the musical elements, which were fantastic and fun like a nun singing songs and characters too. Aside from this, Matt and his friends end up on one hell of an adventure.

Gargantuous gory scenes throughout, so much .... oh, so much even made me feel queasy, definitely not for the squeamish. As the book comes to a conclusion, the last few chapters were one hell of a mega gorefest of descriptive splitter, splattery, and delight.

I initially recommended this book to my sister-in-law, but she read it first and told me to bump it up my tbr pile. She actually warned me I might need a bucket and whatever you do, most definitely .... DO NOT EAT whilst reading the first chapter about Mother Superior Agatha "Finger Licking Good," so I should have listened to her lol 😆😆 OMG 😲 gagging I was, well she did warn me.

Fantastic, fun, gory, splattery read!! Will definitely be reading more by this author in the future. I loved it!!!!!

Think you have read everything the genre can throw at you? You ain’t seen nothing until you read Phenomenun: A Splatter-comedy musical by Mark M.J Green!

Sister Agatha (who will put you off eating fish for a long, long time), and the Sisters from her nunnery are excited to take their young charge for a life-saving operation, but a devastating car crash near a toxic chemical plant brings a ‘blend’ of characters that will have you howling with laughter while reaching for the sick bucket simultaneously. It is gross, hysterical and fabulous!

I loved the omniscient narrator, who has no problem in breaking the fourth wall - I haven’t seen this so well done since the Book in Hitchhiker’s Guide! The screenplay-like descriptions of the song and dance routines covering the most horrific action scenes are superb.

So if you find yourself in a reading slump, and are scrolling to find something entirely unique. You’ve found it!

The cover of Phenomenun: A Splatter-Comedy Musical by Mark M.J. Green foregrounds a nun sinking into a puddle of a bright green substance spilled from the toxic material container that are scattered around her. A dog peeps out from behind one of the containers: he has a sausage shaped object in his mouth.

A Splattery Fun Time!

This needs to be a Troma movie immediately! Phenomenun is wacky and wild and unexpected and absolutely, without a doubt, one of the funniest books I've read this year. Toxic Avenger meets The Flying Nun with blood, guts, and splatter to spare! There was absolutely not a boring moment in this absolutely bonkers tale. It's a quick read that you should absolutely check out, like, yesterday

Had a lot of fun with this one. Read like a Kaufman / Corman Movie turned into a Splatter Comedy Musical book which I'm certain is exactly what Mark set out to do. Tons of pop-culture and silliness and just great fun.

Phenomenun: A Splatter-Comedy Musical is now my fourth Mark M.J. Green book, following Do You Hear What I Hear , Jacobian , and Abortus . Each book thus far has provided a very different experience, and unsurprisingly the splatter-comedy musical Phenomenun is unlike any of Green's other books that I've read so far. I thoroughly enjoyed myself with this.

Steeped in schlock, Phenomenun proudly draws inspiration from films such as Street Trash (1987), Re-Animator (1985), and perhaps most obviously (although I have yet to see it, which is something I really need to rectify) The Toxic Avenger (1984). There are also opportunities throughout the book where Green demonstrates his cineliteracy, which serves to help paint some vivid images.

Opening with a sequence of breathtaking audacity, Green establishes from the offset that Phenomenun is not a book for the faint of heart. He pulls no punches in the depiction of a Mother Superior enjoying some quiet downtime and effortlessly sets the tone for the rest of the book. This is a story about an administrative error leading to an unfortunate mishap that ultimately results in a battle between good and evil, and along the way we meet an assortment of characters - some really likeable, some truly detestable. And then there's the musical numbers, of course.

Throughout the book I could practically feel Green's fingers on my face as he manipulated my features from shocked and aghast to cringing to grinning to raucous laughter. The way Green swings between depravity and comedy is nothing short of impressive. I also appreciated the fourth wall breaks throughout, adding a little levity in places. Phenomenun is my favourite Green book I've read thus far - it's disgusting and funny and silly in all the right ways. I can't wait to experience what else Green has to offer.

Mother superior Agatha runs the Happy Jesus Nunnery & Home for Lost Children.

Agatha likes to get her rocks off just like most ordinary people. Sure she had her quirks. * Ah hem Priestlycumfessions Ah hem *

Little Billy needs a new heart. When the hospital calls the nunnery to alert them, the singing begins. Cue hilarity and ukuleles and an insane bus journey that ends in disaster. A toxic disaster. The survivors would never be the same again.

This book had me laughing and gagging from the outset. Think sister act meets the sound of music meets a comedy horror B movie and that’s what this read brings.

It was super fun and refreshing to have a read that tickled your funny bone!

Gruesome fun

I love a musical and I also love a bit of fun and gore, and this book didn't disappoint. It's testament to how much I love food that I was able to read this on my lunch breaks, although there were a few occasions where I paused eating to finish a particularly disgusting paragraph!

Well, that was disgusting! But I loved every page. I've never laughed so much while gagging in my life, but this awesome mix of horror and musicals is an absolute genius! Mark, you just keep continuing to surprise me with your writing. I've never known anyone who can write so well about different sub-genres of horror. You are a true master. I love Agatha, and I do wonder if there's a little bit of me in her with her love of biting- when I get excited or overwhelmed, I chow down on those who know me best and it made me chuckle so much! Agatha for the toxic win!

Phenomenun is phenomenal!

I’ve been cackling out loud throughout this amazing book, it’s every bit as humorous and fun as you would expect.

In between the humor, however, is some seriously sickening extreme scenes to satisfy the gore-hounds.

Troma films meet musicals which then meet extreme horror, they have a hot and heavy threesome and Mark Greens epic piece is born.

Full of nuns, toxic waste and people randomly breaking into song, this very unique and well written story will have you singing along.

Picture the most outlandish B horror schlock combined with a musical. Like the very best Troma movie there is gore galore, ridiculous dialogue, completely absurd situations, and hilarious locations (like an abandoned dildo factory). Add to all of those great selling points the fact that the story is very well written, and you have a masterpiece of hilarity reminiscent of The Toxic Avenger. This was one of the funniest and most enjoyable of reding experiences. I hope he writes more books like this in the future.
