The Final Lap: Navigating the transitions of later life

Rate this book
Life’s a marathon with many highs and lows along the way. As we approach retirement we transition into a new stage of our race, presenting us with a range of possibilities and pitfalls to navigate.

With experience and warmth, John Wyatt invites Christians to think through how we can approach the next stages of life well. He considers the move firstly from work to retirement, then independency to dependency, and finally from life to death as we approach the finishing line.

Whilst being honest about the struggles of each transition, The Final Lap lays out the wonderful opportunities God gives in every stage. And the more prepared we are to face each transition as it comes, the better we can face the challenges and the more fully we can embrace the future with hope and joy.

This is the first paper book I’ve read in years which explains why I took so long to read it. I’m simply out of the habit of reading.

Nevertheless, I’m glad I have read it. It’s a great little book and, despite the length of time it took *me* to read it, it’s a short one and it deserves to be read by everyone who is approaching, or might already be in, retirement. The three stages of life that John Wyatt covers in this book are Moving from work to retirement (which is given the chapter title, Hitting the Wall); Moving from independence to dependence (chapter title, The Home Straight); and Moving from life to death (chapter title, The Finish Line).

Each chapter is written with warmth and sensitivity. I can well imagine John being a very caring senior doctor, now Emeritus Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics in London. The chapters are littered with anecdotes which I found are always helpful. The Scripture references just cemented the ideas that had already been presented.

A friend saw me reading the book and asked if he could borrow it. He is to give a brief talk to the Grandparents group and he thinks that this book will help him with his preparation. I couldn’t agree more!

I loved this book! It came as a recommendation on the radio by Jonathan Griffiths, who said it was "just gold". John Wyatt is a retired medical professional and he writes very concisely and brings across truths and recommendations that are "just gold" for those of us who are entering the final stages of life. There are three topics: 1. Moving from work to retirement; 2. Moving from independence to dependence; and, 3. Moving from life to death.
Recently, some close family members and friends have entered retirement and some have passed away. I noticed that these things can be done well, or they can not be done well. This book gives encouragement and challenges you to do the final stages of life in a Biblical manner and with enthusiasm. Really good!

This book is indeed written with 'experience and warmth'. John Wyatt drawing on parallels within marathon running and within scripture gently encourages preparation for three later stages of life - the transition into retirement, transition into dependence and 'falling asleep in Christ'.
The style is gentle and his honesty and vulnerability disarming. It makes for an easy yet rewarding read. That is a very good combination!
Highly recommended.

This is a really helpful short book looking at the three major transitions of later life: from work to retirement, from independence to dependence, and from life to death. John Wyatt has a lot of wisdom and encouragement to share, and this is definitely a book that's worth reading slowly. It's helped me as a pastor, as a friend to older people, and as someone who may get old at some point.
